This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Jacob Wintrode Shively And Wife, Betsy Almira Barber, Who Lived In Tama County, Iowa

Jacob Wintrode Shively was born on 8-October-1855 in Huntington County, IN. He was the son of Owen Shively and Mary Wintrode McClure.  Jacob was married on 13-March-1877 in Tama County, IA to Betsy Almira Barber.

Shively Funeral Is Held At Tama
(Courier Special Service)  Tama, Ia.--The funeral of Mrs. Jacob W. Shively, 72, a resident of Tama for more than half a century, who died Friday night, was held Sunday afternoon at Harrison funeral home.  Rev. W. O. Eckler of the Methodist church officiated.  Members of the Rebekah lodge attended the services in a body.  Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
Surviving her are Mr. Shively, their six children, Mrs. J. R. Haynes, Ayr, N.D.; Mrs. Alice Steininger, Dayton, O; Mrs. Rilla Larson and Mrs. C. W. Schidt, Tama; J. W. Shively, Keokuk; and Delbert Shively, Toledo.  She also leaves a sister, Mrs. E. Gibbons, Monroe, Washington; and two brothers, Samuel Barber, Coon Rapids, and John Barber, Tama.

J. Shively, 87, Died Wednesday, Funeral Services To Be Held Friday
Jacob Shively, 87, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Rilla Larson, in Tama, with whom he had made his home for the past few years.  He was taken that day to the Marshalltown hospital.
Jacob Wintrode Shively was born in Huntingdon County, Ind., October 8th, 1855, the son of Owen and Mary Wintrode Shively.
At the age of six years he came with his parents to Tama, Iowa, where he had since made his home, with the exception of two years, when the family lived in Nebraska, and of a year or two when he had lived near Montour, Iowa.  He had lived continuously in Tama since 1879.
He was married to Betsy Almira Barber, March 13th, 1877.  To this union six children were born; they are Mrs. C. W. Schmidt of Tama, Mrs. Flora M. Haynes of Ayre, North Dakota, Mrs. W. S. Hattery of Dayton, Ohio, Jay W. Shively of Keokuk, Delbert M. Shively of Marshalltown, and Mrs. Rilla Larson of Tama.  He leaves ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
His wife preceded him in death June 16th, 1933.
For many years he was a member of the United Brethren church of Tama, but after that church disbanded he became a member of the Methodist church of Tama.  He was a member of Tama Lodge No. 152,  I.O.O.F. for over 50 years.
For 22 years he was a policeman in Tama, after which he had charge of the city Pumping Station, from which he retired about seven years ago.  Mr. Shively became ill May 31st, 1943, and that day was taken to St. Thomas Hospital at Marshalltown.  He passed away June 30th, 1943.
The funeral will be held from the Mason funeral home tomorrow (Friday), July 2, at 2 p.m.
The I.O.O.F. lodge will be in charge of the grave service.  Lodge members will be pall bearers.  Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

He and wife, Betsy, and daughter, Daisy age 2 are listed on the 1880 Tama County, IA census.  The family of Jacob W. Shively is listed on the 1900 Tama County, IA census as follows:  Jacob W  born Oct 1855, wife Betsy born Jan 1861, daughter Daisy born March 1878, daughter Flora born Nov 1880, daughter Alice born April 1883, son Jay born June 1888, son Delbert born December 1894 and daughter Rilla born April 1898.  Jacob can be found on the 1910 thru 1940 Tama County, IA census records.

Children Of Levi Shively and Rachel A. Sawmiller Who Lived In Auglaize County And Van Wert County, Ohio

Levi Shively was born 26-Nov-1859 in Auglaize Co., OH and died 23-Oct-1890 in Auglaize Co., OH.  He is buried in Kossuth Cemetery.  Levi married Rachel A. Sawmiller in Auglaize Co., on 18-Jul-1880. Rachel was born 3-Apr-1866 and died 14-Aug-1943 in Van Wert Co., OH.  She married 2nd to Jacob Adams in Auglaize Co on 30-Jan-1892.  Following is information on the children of Levi Shively and Rachel Sawmiller.

Stella Shively was born 19-May-1881 in Auglaize County, OH. (This date was recorded in the Auglaize Co. birth records and differs from the date listed in the newspaper obit).  The following newspaper obituary was extracted from the Van Wert Times Bulletin, Saturday, April 22, 1972, Page 2, Column 4:   Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Harter and Son Memorial Chapel, Delphos, for Mrs. Estella Morris, 90, who died Friday morning in Vancrest Nursing Home, Van Wert, following a lengthy illness.  Mrs. Morris was a former resident of Rt. 3, Delphos.  The Rev. Melvin H. Berkebile will officiate at the service.  Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. Morris was born May 30, 1881, in Auglaize County, a daughter of Lee and Rachel (Sawmiller) Shively. She was married Jan. 16, 1897, to Charles Al Morris, who died June 27, 1958.
Survivors include two sons, Harl of 562 S. Race St. and Earl of Rt. 1; a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Sealscott of Rt. 3; a brother, James Shively of Rt. 5; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Morris was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and its Ladies Aid Society.  Friends may call at the funeral home.

Fannie Shively was born on 10-Sep-1882 in Auglaize County, OH.

Bertha Shively was born 3-Jan-1884 in Auglaize County, OH. (This date was recorded in the Auglaize Co. birth records and differs from the date listed in the newspaper obit). From the Van Wert Times Bulletin, Saturday, January 2, 1971, Page 8, Column 3:  
DELPHOS--Mrs. Bertha Keirns, 87, of Rt. 3, Delphos, died at 3:45 a.m. today in Vancrest Nursing Home in Van Wert.
She was born Jan 3, 1883, in Kossuth, and was married July 31, 1899, to John Keirns.  He died May 24, 1970.
Survivors include two sons, Myrlen and Arlie, both of Palmer, Mich.; two brothers, James Shivley of rural Van Wert, and Cleve Adams of Newaygo, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Al (Stella) Morris of Vancrest Nursing Home; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.  Friends may call at the Harter and Son Funeral Home in Delphos after 5 p.m. Sunday.

James Shively was born 28-Dec-1886 in Auglaize County, OH. (This date was recorded in the Auglaize Co. birth records and differs from the date listed in the newspaper obit). Per the marriage records James was married on 23-March-1907 which differs from the newspaper obituary. Retired Man Dies After Ladder Fall
Daniel W. Shively, 81 of 126 Logan St., died at 12:10 a.m. today at the Van Wert County Hospital, of injuries sustained in a fall at his home.  Mr. Shively was picking apples at his residence when he fell and suffered a hip fracture.  He was taken to the hospital by the firemen's emergency unit.
Mr. Shively, a retired farmer, was a son of Levi and Rachel (Sawmiller) Shively, and he was born Dec. 29, 1886, in Van Wert County where he was a lifetime resident.  His wife, the former Rose Etta Drury, whom he married March 20, 1906, died Sept. 2, 1958.
Surviving are two sons, Edward of Rt. 7, Fort Wayne, and Emmett Shively of Lima; eight daughters, Zelma Priddy of Rt. 1, Spencerville, Mrs. Ernest (Ilo) Stemen of Rt. 4, Mrs. Gerald (Omah) Davis of Haley St., Mrs. Ethyl Johnson of Rt. 2, Mrs. Lawrence (Edith) Mosier of Bryan, Mrs. Luther (Lodora) Bollenbacher of Rockford, Mrs. Elnora Mosier of Rt. 1, and Mrs. Jerome (Helen) Gehm of Rt. 1, Rockford.
Two sisters, Mrs. Jake (Bertha) Keirns, or rural Delphos and Mrs. Stella Morris, of rural Delphos; a brother, J. L. Shively of Rt. 5; a half-brother, Cleve Adams of White Cloud, Mich. and a stepbrother, Stewart Adams of Fort Jennigs; 29 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.  Two children, Cleo and Ruby, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at  2 p.m. Monday, at the Brickner Funeral Home, the Rev. Carl Miller to officiate.  Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home after noon, Saturday.

James L. Shively was born 14-Oct-1885 in Auglaize County, OH.  From the Van Wert Times Bulletin, August 2, 1974, Page 2, Columns 2-3:   James L. Shively, 88, of Rt. 5 died at 10:30 a.m. today in Vancrest Nursing Home following an illness of seven weeks.
He was born Oct. 14, 1885, in Kossuth, a son of Levi and Rachael (Sawmiller) Shively.  On April 1, 1906 he married Osee P. Bucher, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Gaylord (Opal) Bell of Rt. 5, Mrs. Wilbert (Harriett) Bell of Rt. 4, Mrs. Doty (Mabel) Bell of 713 Elson Ave., and Mrs. Diamond (Margaret) DeCamp of Convoy; a half-brother, Cleve Adams of Newaygo, Mich.; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, there brothers, three sisters and a granddaughter.
Mr. Shively was engaged in farming and was a member of Antioch Friends Church.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Alspachs with the Rev. John Dursk officiating.  Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Ray Shively was born 12-June-1888 in Auglaize County, OH. and died 12-July-1888.  He is buried in Kossuth Cemetery.

Harvy Shively was born 3-July-1889 in Auglaize County, OH and died 29-March-1890.  He is buried in Kossuth Cemetery.

William Jackson Shively And Artessima Jane Simmons Who Lived In Richland County, Ohio

William Jackson Shively was born on 10-Jan-1842 and died on 25-Sep-1909 in Richland Co., OH.  He was the son of William Shively and Nancy Cunningham. Nancy Cunningham was the daughter of Capt. James Cunningham and wife, Margaret.  From the Richland Shield & Banner, 26-Jan-1895:  The funeral of Mrs. Nancy Shively took place at Butler today.  The deceased was a daughter of the late Capt. James Cunningham, as was born September 15, 1812, while the family was enroute from Richland To Licking County, to escape the depredations of the Indians.  Mrs. Shively was a solider's widow, and leaves two children, a son and a daughter, both married.  The deceased was a sister of the late Mrs. Baughman, of this city.

William Jackson Shively was married 1st on 20-Oct-1864 in Richland Co., OH to Artessima Jane Simmons.  From the Mansfield Weekly News, 4-Aug-1887:  Mrs. William Shively died very suddenly Wednesday morning and was interred in the Easterly Cemetery the same afternoon.  

William Jackson Shively was married 2nd on 16-Jul-1891 in Richland Co., OH to Martha Elizabeth Garber, daughter of David Garber and Susannah Leedy. Martha Elizabeth died 8-Sep-1927 in Richland County.  From The Mansfield News, Friday, September 9, 1927, Page 28 , Column 3:
County Native Dies After Long Illness
Mrs. Martha Shively, aged 69 years, widow of the late William Shively and a native of Jefferson township, died Thursday afternoon at her home five miles north of this city following a lingering illness.
She was born June 17, 1858, five miles south of Bellville in Jefferson township where she resided until her marriage to William Shively, when she took up her residence near Butler.  Twenty years ago she moved north of this city.
Her maiden name was Garber and she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gladys Whitney, of this city, a sister Mrs. Jennie Crane, of Bucyrus, three brothers, E. L. Garber of Bellville and     Aaron and Levi Garber of Ashland. The body was removed to the Wappner mortuary for burial preparations where it will remain pending funeral arrangements.

William Jackson Shively, aged 67 years, 8 months and 15 days, died Sunday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock at his home, 814 North Diamond street, of apoplexy, after having been in poor health for a number of months.  He was born in this county and was a member of the Methodist church in Butler.  Funeral Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at the home, conducted by the Rev. S. L. Stewart. Burial in Jefferson cemetery. Mr. Shively is survived by three sons, Hammond, Andrew, and Melvin, and two daughters, Miss Gladys Shively and Mrs. Margaret Wowold.

Gale Whitney; daughter Nancy Jane born 28-Aug-1877 in Worthington township, Richland Co., OH;  Mary Ellen Shively born 25-Dec-1879 in Worthington township;  daughter born 8-July-1885 in Worthington township; and son James Melvin born 30-Aug-1881 died 21-Jun-1926 married Anna C. Sells.

William Shively and 2nd wife, Martha Elizabeth Garber were the parents of: daughter Katie born ca 1892; daughter Gladys Merline born 10-Jul-1895 married 1st Ralph Gale Whitney, married second William Franklin Mace; twin sons Lloyd born 18-Nov-1899 and Floyd born 18-Nov-1899.
