Former Businessman Herman Shively Dies
FERRUM -- THe funeral for A. Herman Shively, 81, of Ferrum, who died Friday in Franklin Memorial Hospital, was conducted Sunday afternoon in St. James United Methodist Church at Vaughn Chapel Ferrum College by the Revs. Herbert G. Hobbs and Van T. Renick. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Park, with Masonic rites by Rocky Mount Lodge No. 201 AF&AM.
He was a retired GM dealer, banker and farmer, having been the Chevrolet dealer in Ferrum for 31 years and the Chevrolet and Oldsmobile dealer in Altavista for 12 years. He also was a former director, president and chairman of the board of First National Bank of Ferrum with 38 years of service.
Being active in community affairs, he was a charger member of the Ferrum Lions Club, co-organizer of the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department, member of the Board of Trustees of Franklin Memorial Hospital and Ferrum College, having served with the Franklin County Planning Commission. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, a Mason and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Easter Shively; two sons and daughters-in-law, James H. and Nancy Shively of Ferrum and John S. (Buddy) and Ann Shively of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Nancy Cabell Shively, Elliott Perdue Shively, Mindy Ruth Shively and John Shively, Jr.; one sister, Blanche S. Martin of Rocky Mount; and two brothers, J. O. Shively of Rocky Mount and T. Howard Shively of Altavista.

She was a retired teacher at National Business College and was a member and former secretary-treasurer of First Baptist Church.
She was active in mission work, serving as president of the Women's Missionary Union at First Baptist Church, superintendent of the Women's Missionary Union of the Ronanoke Valley Baptist Association, a member of the Executive Board of Directors for the Women's Missionary Union of Virginia and a member of the Board of Directors of the the Baptist Mission Centers.
She also served as president of the William Watts Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and South Roanoke Garden Club.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest J. Goggin; three brothers, J. O. Shively of Rocky Mount,, A. H. Shivelyof Ferrum and T. Howard Shively of Altavista; one sister, Mrs. M. C. (Blanche) Martin of Rocky Mount; nieces; and nephews.
