James Shively was the son of Peter Landon Shively (1856-1947) and Elizabeth Frances "Betty" Sigmon (1858-1935). James Robert was married on 17-Feb-1901 in Franklin County, VA to Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie Bet" Bowling. Sarah was born on 6-Aug-1881 in Franklin County, VA and died 13-Apr-1959 in Roanoke City, VA. She was the daughter of John Berl Bowling (1845-1933) and Martha Jane Thomas (1858-1932).

Henry County Man Slain By Cousin

Dode Shively Fires Fatal Shot Into J. R. Shively -- Quarrel Near Waidsboro Over A Saddle

Rocky Mount, Va. June 28.--Special.

Saturday evening at the farm of J. R. Shiveley, between Waidsboro and Ferrrum, Dode Shiveley shot and killed J. R. Shiveley. The shooting occurred in the dooryard about 8 p.m. The injured man lived until about 3 o'clock Sunday morning.

Dode Shiveley had been working for J. R. Shiveley, and lived in a house hear the farm residence. During the day he had been up in the mountains on business, using a saddle belonging to J. R. Shiveley, who upbraided Dode on his return for scarring and injuring the saddle. They became very and J. R. Shiveley picked up a rock and struck Dode, who then shot him in the lungs.

Dode had a raincoat over his left arm, pulled his pistol with his right, and shot through the coat. The injured man was taken to the house and surgical aid summoned.

The dead man, J. R. Shiveley, was a cousin of the man who shot him, and was a man of peaceable disposition.

Before his death, J. R. Shiveley made a statement completely exonerating Dode of all blame. He said he lost his temper and picked up a rock, and that Dode shot as he advanced.

No arrest has been made. It is expected that the case will be dismissed promptly by the authorities. The widow of J. R. Shiveley, it is said, corroboates her husband's ante-mortem statement.

Mrs. Sarah B. Shively

Mrs. Sarah Bowling Shively, 77, of 1847 Mt. Vernon Rd., SW, died in a local hospital today.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. M. C. Martin, Wirtz, and Mrs. Ernest J. Goggin, Roanoke; three sons, T. H. Shively, Roanoke; A. H. Shively, Ferrum, and J. O. Shively, Rocky Mount; a sister, Mrs. J. T. Thomas, Martinsville; a brother, H. H. Bowling, Hollins; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchlidren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's, conducted by Dr. Wade H. Bryant. Burial will be in Mountain View, Franklin County.

Rocky Dode Shively (Shiveley) was born ca. 1883.  He was the son of William and Mary Shively. Dode Shively married Malinda "Linnie" Etta Janney. She was born on 15-May-1888 in Ferrum, Franklin County, VA and died on 19-Jun-1947 in Henry County, VA.  Linnie was the daughter of James A. Janney (1854-1932) and Frances Hale (1855-1925).

Robert Conly Shively was born on 22-May-1909 and died on 4-Oct-1982.  Robert was the son of Henry Charles Shively and Fidella Wilerson. Henry Charles Shively was born in March 1864. He married Fidella Wilkerson ca. 1885. Fidella was born 23-May-1870 in Casey County, KY and died on 10-Apr-1945 in Big Creek, Hartwell, McDowell County, WV. She was the daughter of Edward Wilkerson and Mary Ellen Crawford. 

Henry Charles Shively was the son of Charles Shively (born Mar-1834 in Taylor County, KY and died on 22-Mar-1917 in Taylor County, KY) and Millie Wilson (born 1-Mar-1863 in Taylor County, KY and died on 3-Jan-1936 in Taylor County, KY. From the KY death certificate the father of Charles Shively was Harvey Nutan (possibly Newton). Robert Conly was married 1st to Juanita Simpson in 1939 from whom he was divorced in 1946.  He married 2nd to Joan Callie Choate on 12-Jun-1954 in Wayne County, IN from whom he was divorced in 1957. Robert Shively was married 3rd to Irene Bowler Rogers.  

Listed on the 1940 Cicinnati City, Hamilton County, OH census are Robert Shiveley age 30 and wife Juanita age 28. On the 1950 Hamilton County, OH census is Robert Shively age 39 divorced born in Kentucky.

Services for Robert Conly Shively will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Zion Baptist Church, 630 Glenwood Ave, Avondale.

Mr. Shively, 67, died Monday in Otto C. Epp Memorial Hospital.

He had worked for the Lincoln Heights and Cincinnati public schools and was a member of the Cincinnati Teachers Association, the Ohio and the National Educational Associations, the Bluefield State College Alumni Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Metallic Club of Kennedy Heights.

Mr. Shively also had worked for the Cincinnati Recreation Commission for 18 years, the Hamilton County Juvenile Court system for 17 years, and had been a teacher and administrator at the Princeton Public School District.

He leaves his wife, Irene Shively of Lincoln Heights; a daughter, Yvonne Rogers Lanier of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Eva Reed of Lexington, KY., and Viola McDaniels of Akron; three nieces and two nephews.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Zion Baptist Church. Arrangements are in care of Renfro Funeral Service Inc., 647 Forest Ave., Avondale.

Irene Bowler Rogers Shively

 Irene Bowler Rogers Shively was born September 25, 1910 in the Avondale Community of Cincinnati of Cincinnati, Ohio as an only child to the union of the late James and Ella Bowler.

 As a young girl, she accepted Christ at the First Baptist Church at Park and Lincoln Avenues and remained a member for many years until transferring to the Zion Baptist Church approximately forty years ago. At these churches she was a member of many clubs, Missionary circles, bible study groups and choirs. She was also a Sunday School Teacher.

She attended Douglas Elementary, Withrow High School and the University of Cincinnati and went on to become a long time educator in the Cincinnati Public School System. Irene was a member of many youth and education associations, flower, Bridge and travel clubs and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Irene was united in Holy Matrimony to William Harrison Rogers producing a daughter. Seven years after the death of Rogers, she married Robert Conley Shively, who passed on twelve years ago.

Irene departed this life on Monday, June 13, 1994 at the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit of the Jewish Hospital.

She leaves her daughter, Yvonne Rogers Lanier, Ph.D. and son-in-law, Professor William David Lanier, both of Washington, D.C. to love and cherish her memory.

Another Crank

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 -- Prof. J. W. Shively, who calls himself the "true Messiah", arrived in this city Thursday and took a room on Sixth street. He at once addressed a letter to Judge Cox, Judge Porter and others connected with the Guiteau trial, to convince them of the fallacy of Guiteau's alleged inspirations. In his letter to Judge Cox he demanded to be put upon the stand to confront Guiteau and tell the court where and how to find this awful deity of the Republican party. The police were notified and this morning arrested him. He will be sent to the insane asylum.

SARATOGA, N.Y., Dec. 5 --Prof. J. W. Shively, of Saratoga, the "great Messiah" crank, arrested at Washington, D.C., today, is believed to be Johnathan W. Shively, of 136 Beckman street, this place. He is down in the directory as a photographer, but his wife says he is an oil painter. While the family make a permanent residence, he travels from place to place in pursuit of his profession. Mrs. Shively says he left home in September, and the last she heard from him he was west, and she expected a letter from him from Chicago or Cincinnati. She adds that a number of years ago he suffered severely from neuralgia, and at times when excited would conduct himself in a peculiar manner. These periods would cover two or three days, after which he would become perfectly rational. About a month ago, in Cleveland, he met with an accident by which his head was injured, and she fears this may have caused temporary aberration of mind. Mrs. Shively did not know her husband intended visiting Washington. He is the son of a clergyman, and was born in Jackson county, Va. Mrs. Shively is a native of Alexandria in that state. She is considerably alarmed about him. The Shiveley family have resided here for upwards of ten years, but within a year or two passed the winters South.

A brother of Johnathan Wright Shively is mentioned in the following newspaper article found in The Fairbury Blade, Fairbury, Illinois, Saturday, December 17, 1881, Page 3, Column 4:

Last week an item appeared on the fourth page of our paper, to the effect that, "Another 'crank', named Shively, who called himself the 'True Messiah', was arrested in Washington on the 5th. He had addressed a letter to Judge Cox, demanding to be put on the witness stand to confront Guiteau, and to convince the Court and jury of the fallacy of Guiteau's theory of inspiration. He had been a traveling oil painter, and had lived at Saratoga, N.Y., for some years." The item also stated that he would probably be sent to the insane asylum.

This week, Mr. B. W. Shively, of this city, called at our office and stated that, from the description given, he had reason to believe that the man was his only brother. He received a letter from him, dated at Cincinnati, about four weeks ago, in which he said he had been waylaid in city of Cleveland, a short time previous, by highwaymen, who struck him a heavy blow on the head, knocking him senseless; but that he thought he had recovered from the effects of it. Mr. Shively is under the impression that his brother has become deranged from the result of his encounter in Cleveland, and has wandered down to Washington, as stated. He has not heard from him since receiving the letter mentioned above, and expressed his intention of writing to the authorities at the Capitol in regard to the matter. The unfortunate man has a family living at Saratoga, N.Y.

Johnathan W. Shively

SARATOGA, N.Y., June 14. -- [Special.] - Jonathan W. Shively, who died suddenly of heart disease at midnight, attracted no small police attention in Washington on the day Garfield was shot by Guiteau. He mounted a box in front of Willard's Hotel and proclaimed that he was the "true Messiah", and in an incoherent ramble sought to explain why the shooting had taken place. Shively was patriarchal in appearance; was born in West Virginia seventy-five years ago, and had lived here twenty-six years. He was a noted artist and portrait painter, was highly educated, and had traveled extensively. His widow survives him.

On Wednesday, June 13th, at his late residence, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Johnathan Wright Shiveley. Funeral services Saturday at 1:30 p.m., at the residence of S. F. Dyson, 1004 Prince street. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Interment private.

Death Of Mrs. Shiveley

Mrs. Ann D. Shiveley, widow of J. W. Shively, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., died yesterday morning at the home of her brother, Mr. J. Frank Dyson, 1004 Prince street. Mrs. Shiveley was born in Charles county nearly 73 years ago, but had lived in Alexandria since 1850.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Anna D. Shiveley took place this afternoon from the residence of her brother,, Mr. J. Frank Dyson, 1004 Prince street, the Rev. A. W. Rudisill, pastor of Trinity M. E. Church, conducted the services and the interment was in Ivy Hill cemetery. The pallbearers were Dr. W. B. Dent and Messrs. J. Frank Dent, Llewellyn F. Dyson, and C. Fletcher Dyson, four nephews of the deceased, and Messrs. J. Frank Dyson and Windosr Demaine.

A couple of notes regarding Charles J. Guiteau.  He was born 8-Sep-1841 in Freeport, IL and died 30-Jun-1882.  He shot President James A. Garfield in 1881 at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C.  Garfield died two months later from infections related to the wound. Guiteau falsely believed he had played a major role in Garfield's election victory, for which he should have been rewarded with a consulship.  He was frustrated and offended by the Garfield administration's rejections.

A search for the newspaper obituary for Benjamin Shively was done. Unfortunately The Fairbury Blade issue from 4-Apr-1891 and 11-Apr-1891 are missing.  Most likely one of these issues contained the full obituary.   The following was found in The Fairbury Blade, Fairbury, Illinois, Saturday, March 28, 1891, Page 1, Column 6:

Sudden Death

B. W. Shively, an aged and well known citizen of this community was found dead in his bed early yesterday, Friday, morning. He was almost eighty years of age and had been failing for several years.

The following was extracted from The Fairbury Blade, Fairbury, Illinois, Friday, September 29, 1899, Page 1, Column 2:

Obituary

Died, at her home in Fairbury, Ill., Thursday evening, September 21. Mrs. E. F. Shively, in her 77th year. The funeral service was held in the F. M. Church, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Rev. R. F. Brothers officiating assisted by Rev. Fehr. Mrs. E. F. Shively was born in Tyler Co., Virginia, January 19, 1823. She was first converted at an early age and united with the M. E. church. She was married to B. W. Shively in November 1845, and in the following year they came to Ill., where they lived until 1852. They then moved to Ohio, and three years later returned to Ill., locating in Woodford County.

During their residence there, Mr. and Mrs. Shively were baptized by Rev. C. D. Merit in the Minonk Baptist church. They moved to Fairbury in Nov. 1866, uniting with the Baptist church, of which she was a member 18 years. During the meeting of the F. M. church under the labors of B. P. Clark, having lost in her experience sought the Lord anew, and was blessedly saved, and joined the F. M. church June 15, 1884 and remained an acceptable member until her death. There remain to mourn her loss, three daughters, one brother, two sisters, and other relatives, her husband having passed to the better world some eight years before.

From the written records it is believed the history of Henry Charles Shively is found on the 1850 Division 1, Taylor County, KY Slave Schedule in the list for John B. Shively.  On the 1860 Division 1, Taylor County, KY Slave Schedule following the name of Jno. B. Shively are the following black males age 22, age 12, age 2 and age 4 months with the following black females age 18, age 17, age 15, age 10, age 5 and age 3 months. The following information was found in the settlement of the estate of John B. Shively in Taylor County, KY, Book 3, Pages 284-288 which gives names to some of those listed on the 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedules.  Note that Charles and Milly are two of the names listed.             On the 1870 Mansville District, Taylor County census is a family identified as being black: Charles H Shively age 35, wife Millie A age 31, daughter Sarah E. age 16, son William age 14, daughter Mary age 8, son Charles H age 7, daughter Amanda age 5, daughter Lucinda age 4, daughter Cresa E. age 2 and daughter Caroline age 2 months. Listed on the 1880 Mansville District, Taylor County, KY census is the family of Charlie Shively age 45, Millie age 40, Sahra age 24, John age 20, Manda age 18, Loucinda age 16, Tresy E age 14, Caroline age 12, Lisy Jane age 10, Charles H age 17, Samuell age 6 and Josiah age 4. Charles and Milly Shively remain in Taylor County, KY for future census records. By 1900 their son Charles Henry Shively (born 1864) has moved to Knox County, KY.

She was born in Knox Co., KY, daughter of Henry Shively and Fidela Shively. Survivors are a son, Albert (Elayne) Reed; a grandson, Don (Mel) Reed; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola McDaniel, Akron, OH; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Wallace. Services are 1:30 p.m. today at Cunningham Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas C. Wallace officiating. Burial is in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

She is survived by son, William J. (Yasuko) Wallace Jr. of Akron; daughter, Juanita (John) Jackson of Virginia; eight stepchildren; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Harrison Clay Shively And Gretchen H. Abts Who Lived In Franklin County, Nebraska

Harrison Clay Shively was born on 15-Jun-1854 in Darke County, OH and died 2-Sep-1931 in Franklin County, NE.  He was married to Gretchen H. Abts in Logan County, IL on 26-Oct-1879. Gretchen Abts was born on 11-Jan-1858 in Germany and died 18-Mar-1924 in Franklin County, NE.  Harrison Clay Shively was the son of John Shively and Nancy Barless (Harless). John   Nancy Barless (Harless) in Darke County, Ohio on 7-February-1844. John Shively was born 2-January-1814 and died 2-July-1885 at the age of 71 years and 6 months.  He is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa.  Nancy was born 10-September-1823 in Virginia and died 17-November-1899. Another Pioneer Gone

John Shively died July the 20th, 1885, at Marengo, Iowa, aged 71 years, 6 months and 4 days. He was the oldest son of Daniel and Christena Shively, and was born in Montgomery Co., O., Dec. 29th, 1813, near West Liberty. He came with his parents to Washington township, Darke Co., in June, 1817, being among the first settlers there. He remained with his parents until of age, when he learned the cooper trade which he followed for time. He married Miss Nancy Harless in 1843, but after marrying he again resumed farming. In 1856 he went to Logan Co., Ill, where he followed farming until 1867, when he went to Kansas, but returned to Lamarr, Barton Co., Mo., where engaged in butchering, but his son, Jacob W., getting drowned in Spring River and his daughter, Mary being thrown from a buggy by which she lost here life, he became discouraged and returned to Darke county where he remained until six years ago, when he went to Iowa. John was one of those steady, honest men who never wanted a dollar unless he thought he had honestly earned it.

Gretchen H. Abts was born in Germany, January 11, 1858; she died at her home in Franklin, Nebraska, March 18, 1924, at the age of 66 years, 2 months and 7 days.

Shortly after her birth she was brought to America with the other members of the family. The family resided for a short time at Peoria, Illinois, removing in 1861 to Fairbury, Illinois. Here the home remained for many years.

From the home at Fairbury she went out to be united in marriage to Harrison C. Shively, the marriage occurring in Logan county, Illinois, on October 26, 1879.

Mr. and Mrs. Shively lived in Logan county until 1882, in which year they move to Dewitt, Illinois, where they resided for about two years. In 1884 they moved west and located in the Macon, Nebraska, neighborhood, where they lived for twenty-one years. Then followed a residence of one year some miles west of Bloomington. At the end of the year they fixed their home on a farm at the edge of Bloomington, where they remained for about fourteen years. Leaving the farm in 1920, they lived for a few months in Bloomington, and then removed to Franklin, where the family home has since been located.

Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shively, nine of whom survive the mother; Mrs. Mary F. Williams, of eastern Wyoming, near the city of Edgemont, South Dakota; Minnie A. Shively, of Franklin; Mrs. June A. Owen, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Grace Tupper, of Edgemont, South Dakota, Mrs. Clara M. Kelley, of Bloomington, Nebr.; Harry W. Shively, of Edgemont, South Dakota; Harvey D. Shively and Albert W. Shively, of Franklin, Nebr.; and John H. Shively of Bloomington, Nebr.

Mrs. Shively is also survived by eleven grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

For a number of years Mrs. Shively has been the victim of a nervous disorder which made her later life a period of suffering an distress. Added to this in more recent years came a bodily ailment which gradually weakened her resistance until the frail tenement of life could bear no more, and she passed quietly away.

In early life Mrs. Shively became a Christian and united with the membership of the Methodist Episcopal church in Fairbury, Illinois. In 1892 her membership was transfered to the church at Macon, and in 1905 to the church at Bloomington, where she has ever since remained a member.

Until the recent years of her suffering came upon her, Mrs. Shively was an earnest worker in the church and in all the affairs of the Kingdom of God. She gave her service lovingly and unstintedly.

Her Christian character was lovely in every way. She was wonderful as a wife and mother, and the memory of her will linger like a benediction in the lives of her loved ones and all who knew her.

For the night is past and everlasting day has dawned. To her the gates swing wide; she leaves a world of transient things, with its sorrow and its heartbreak and enters with unspeakable delight a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God, where all sorrow is banished, and all tears are wiped away.

The funeral was held from the home Friday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. N. G. Palmer, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery.

Passed Away At Home In Franklin Wednesday Morning After Long Period Of Failing Health

The many friends will be pained to learn of the death of Harrison Shively, who passed away at the home in the northwest part of Franklin Wednesday morning at 8:30, following a period of poor health covering five or six years, the last six weeks having witnessed a more rapid failing, his death being caused by a series of heart attacks.

Harrison Clay Shively was born June 15, 1854 in Darke county, Ohio, and died in Franklin, Nebraska, September 2, 1931, aged 77 years, 2 months and 18 days. He was married to Miss Gretchen Abts in Logan county, Illinois, and to them twelve children were born, three passing away in infancy. Those left to mourn the death of their father are Mrs. Mary Florence Block, Edgemont, S. D.; Miss Minnie Shively, at home; Jack Shively, Bloomington; Mrs. June Owen, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Grace Tupper, Edgemont, S. D.; Mrs. Clara Kelley, Bloomington; Harry Shively, Riverton; Harvey Shively, Parks; Albert Shively, at home. He also leaves nineteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His wife died March 18,1924. He also is survived by one sister, ten years his senior, who lives at Marengto, Iowa.

Mr. Shively had long lived in Nebraska, coming to a farm northeast of Franklin in 1884. The family moved to Bloomington in the spring of 1905, and to Franklin in 1920.

The deceased was a loving father, a true friend and neighbor and a man who stood for the better things of life. He was a member of the Methodist church and his host of friends mourn his passing and extend every sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, in charge of Rev. E. H. Unvert and interment will be in Greenwood cemetery in the family lot. All of the children will be present with the exception of Mrs. Owen who could not come.

Charles Wesley Shively was born in Chester County, PA in 1864. His mother, Susannah Royer, passed away in 1864. Lucy was the daughter of Samuel Milton Hudspeth (1837-1921) and Susan Ann Gentry (1850-1930).

Charles W. Shively

Charles W. Shively, 1018 North Adams street, died at the Bethel hospital in Newton last night following an operation for internal injuries which he received in a fall about a week ago. He was 66 years old.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucy Shively; five daughters, Mrs. Anna Morse of Anthony, Mrs. Emma Brady of Salina, Mrs. Fred Bosserman, Mrs. May Smith, and Miss Thelma Shively, all of Hutchinson; and three sons, George Shively, Clarence Shively and Fred Shively of Hutchinson.

Mr. Shively had lived in Reno county about 25 years. Until about 13 years ago he was a farmer north of Hutchinson. He had been employed at the time of his death on the A. V. I. interurban road.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Mrs. Lucy M. Shively, 89, 419 1/2 North Main, died Saturday night at Broadacres after a month's illness.

She was born July 28, 1879 at Lichtfield, Ill., had lived here 55 years, was a member of First Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, George, Carnation, Wash.; C. S., 419 1/2 North Main; Fred, 1511 North Monroe; five daughters, Mrs. Anna Smith, Anthony; Mrs. Emma Brady, 419 1/2 North Main; Mrs. Mae Smith, RFD 4; Mrs. Harry Bosserman, 234 East 17th; Mrs. Thelma Suttle, Homewood; two brothers, Alpha Hudspeth, Burrton; Rene Hudspeth, Cheney; one sister, Mrs. Belle Lumbert, Redondo Beach, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The following newspaper article was found concerning the death of Ernest Shively in the Hutchinson News, Hutchinson, Kansas, Monday, March 3, 1902:

Died, little Ernest, the son of Charles Shively, on February 5, 1902, age 6 years. He was attacked with scarlet fever only the day before his death and lived only twenty seven hours, when his little soul took its flight, leaving his parents grief stricken. The rest of the children came through all right and are now able to go to school.

Her Death Was Sudden

Miss Shively, Operator at Bell Exchange, Died Yesterday

Miss Mable Shively, 18 years of age, died quite suddenly yesterday morning at her home, 111 Seventh east, of heart trouble. She had been employed as operator on the Southwestern Bell Telephone company's exchange fro the past five months. Recently she had been ill quite often but her death came very suddenly, as she was down town Friday.

The funeral services were held at 2:30 this afternoon at the Johnson funeral parlors with Rev. W. B. Stevens in charge. Interment was at the Eastside cemetery.
