Newport Girl Weds Man She Had Never Seen - Sequel To War Romance
Miss Helen Rose, 25, of 810 Saratoga St., Newport, was to say "I do" Saturday afternoon to a man she had never seen before.
And when she speaks the words another war romance will be culminated.
Five years ago John A. Shively, a marine, passed thru Newport on an L. & N. train for the western front. Miss Rose and her mother, Mrs. Ida Rose, a widow, cheered him and his pals on.
Shively grabbed a paper, wrote his name and address on it and threw it from the window of the moving train.
"Please write", he called to Miss Rose as she picked up the paper. She did. Then he answered. As letter passed between them the words of love were spoken.
"I believe he is a man", said Mrs. Rose as she awaited a telegram telling her of the marriage. Like her daughter, she has never seen Shively.
Shively expects to leave the marine service in June, after which he and Miss Rose will motor from Los Angeles, Cal., where the marriage will take place, to Newport. The bridegroom is now stationed at San Pedro, Cal.
"She is the best pal I've ever had", wrote Shively to Mrs. Rose in asking forgiveness for asking Miss Rose to come west to be married. "When I was in France I thought the entire world but her had gone back on me. Her letters are a part of my live. I know I love her".
