Ashley Baker Shively was born on 23-Feb-1915 in Mercer County, OH and died on 22-Oct-1999 in Riverside County, CA.  He was married on 31-Jul-1935 in Miami County, OH to Helen May Mackellar who was born ca. 1916 in New York.

Ashley Shively was the son of Joseph Earl Shively (born on 13-Mar-1885 in Mercer County, OH and died on 10-Aug-1970 in Miami County, OH) and Maude Opal Baker (born 5-Aug-1888 in Mercer County, OH and died 19-Jan-1979 in Miami County, OH). Joseph Shively was the son of Isaac Shively (born 22-Aug-1847 in Darke County, OH died 12-May-1920 in Wexford County, MI) and Elmira A. Fitzwater (born 22-Mar-1874 died 3-Dec-1913 in Wexford County, MI). Isaac Shively was the son of David Miller Shively (1803-1883) and Esther Angle (1814-1888). Helen May MacKellar was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Willis MacKellar.

Of interest to Troy friends will be the announcement of the marriage of Miss Helen May MacKellar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Willis MacKellar, and Ashley Shively, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Joseph Shively, both of Piqua, at the St. James Episcopal church in Piqua.

Mr. Shively holds a position with the Hobart Brothers company. Both Mr. and Mrs. Shively were graduated from Piqua high school in 1934.

A quietly impressive service this morning at ten o’clock united in marriage, Miss Helen May MacKellar, pretty daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Willis MacKellar of 1615 Nicklin avenue, and Ashley Shively, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Joseph Shively of the Statler road, performed at St. James Episcopal church by the Reverend Maxfield Dowell. The couple was attended by Miss Betty Yearsley and Willis MacKellar, the bride’s brother.

The bride was lovely in her wedding gown of poudre blue crepe, trimmed with beige lace and matching accessories, while Miss Yearsley was smart in a frock of pastel green Both girls wore shoulder bouquets of roses and sweet peas.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Shively were graduated from Piqua high school in 1934 Mr. Shively now holding a position with the Hobart Brothers company in Troy. For the present they will be at home to their friends at 1615 Nicklin avenue.

Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Shively, (the former Helen MacKellar) formerly of Piqua and more recently of 15161 Kingsway Drive, Elsinore, Calif., celebrated their 50th anniversary July 26.

They were married July 31, 1935 and are parents of four children, Lyle Shively of Piqua, Larry Shively and Vonda Thomas, both of Elsinore, Calif and Ashley Joseph Shively of San Diego, Calif; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

They are members of the First Christian Church in Elsinore. Mr. Shively retired from Hobart Corp. after 42 years as a machinist and set-up man.

LAKE ELSINORE — Helen M. Shively, 85, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in San Diego of diabetes and heart failure.

Born May 4, 1916, in Michigan, she lived in Lake Elsinore for 15 years. She enjoyed playing cards, gambling and bingo.

Mrs. Shively was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ashley B. Shively, in October 1999. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kietha Shively of Lake Elsinore and Joseph and Debra Shively of El Cajon; daughter and son-in-law, Vonda and Gene Zell of Lake Elsinore; brother Roy MacKeller of San Diego; grandchildren Marie Williams, Lori, Scott, Stephanie and Rob, Denise and Danielle Shively, Shelly Phipps, and Melissa and Megan; and nine great-grand-children.

Private services are planned.

 

Edward Shively, Son Of Edward Denton Shively And Emma Bricker, Who Lived In Beaver County, Pennsylvania

Edward Shively, WW II

Edward Shively was born ca 1919 and died 27-Sep-1944 and is buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial Coton, South Cambridgeshire District, Cambridgeshire, England. He was on board B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft named "Heavenly Body" which crashed and all on board were killed. The "Heavenly Body" was on a cross-country exercise. While turning, just North of Nailston, near Ibstock the aircraft's nose dropped, and the port wing struck the ground. The machine was completely destroyed by fire and explosion.   

The "Heavenly Body" was a part of the 490th bomb group flight group. The 490th bomb group transitioned from flying B-24 Liberators to B-17 Flying Fortresses, which were used in combat missions from late August 1944. Based at Eye, Suffolk, the  group was focused in the early months in flying tactical missions in support of ground forces in northern France. After the group's conversion to B-17s, the crews switched focus and flew longer distance missions over Germany to bomb industrial sites.

Edward Shively was the son of Edward Denton Shively and Emma Bricker.  Edward Denton Shively was born 15-Jun-1877 in Butler Township, Mercer County, OH and died 18-Nov-1946 in South Heights, Beaver County, PA.  "E. D." Shively and Emma Bricker were married 15-Aug-1905 in Allegheny County, PA.  Edward Denton Shively was the son of Isaac Shively (born 22-Aug-1847 Darke County, OH died 12-May-1920 Wexford County, MI) and Elmira A. Kenneth R. Shively of Charleston, W.Va., is devoting part of the holiday season trying to locate seven uncles whom he has never seen. Helping him with his search is his father-in-law, K. R. Beckner, of 796 E. Mound St.

Shively moved to West Virginia from Oregon with scant information about his uncles, only that they are believed to be farmers in and around Pickaway County.  All, of course,  are named Shively but only two first names are known, Carl and Ray.

Story Turns Up Half-Brother

He was looking for seven uncles to celebrate the holiday season and found a half-brother! That's what happened when a Charleston W.Va. man asked his father-in-law, K. R. Beckner, of 796 E. Mound St. to help locate seven uncles whom he had never seen. 

Beckner told The Dispatch about it, and the story appeared Sunday, Dec. 23.

Beckner said Saturday that while the uncles were not found, the story led to the location of a half-brother in Worthington, who was thought to have died some years ago.

The newly found relative was identified as Donald B. Shively of 100 W. Riverglen Dr., Worthington, half brother of Kenneth R. Shively of Charleston, W. Va., Beckner's son-in-law. 

According to Beckner, a series of letters and phone calls got under way following the story in the Dispatch two weeks ago. The climax came Friday night when the West Virginian learned of his half-brother at Worthington.

Happy over finding a half-brother, the Charleston W. Va., man has redoubled his efforts to locate the seven uncles.

Shively moved to West Virginia from Oregon with scant information about his uncles, only that they are believed to be farmers in and around Pickaway County. All, of course, are named Shively but only two names are known, Carl and Ray.

Hamer Charles Shively (also seen in records as Homer C. and Charles Shively) was the son of Isaac Shively and Elmira Fitzwater.  Hamer C. was born 31-Aug-1883 and died 9-Jul-1973 in Coos County, Oregon. He is buried in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Coos Bay, Coos County, Oregon.  Hamer was married first to Estella Roberts on 27-Aug-1908. Estella (Stella) was born 25-Jun-1890 in Mercer County, Ohio and died 2-Aug-1910, the daughter of William Roberts and Louisa Smith.  To the union of Hamer Shively and Stella Roberts was born one son, Donald B. Shively.  The obituary of Stella mentions that Hamer Charles Shively was working and living in Idaho at the time of her death.  Charles Shively married second to Nellie Gertrude Garlick in 1919. Nellie was born 20-Jun-1893 in Quick Front, Nebraska and died 26-Sep-1967, the daughter of John F. Garlick and Sarah J. Garber. One of the sons of this union was Kenneth R. Shively.  Nellie married second to Chester Myers on 2-Jun-1954 in Linn County, Oregon.

Obituary

Mrs. Stella D. Shively, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William and Louise Roberts, was born June 25, 1890, in Mercer County, six miles west of Celina, and died near Coldwater, August 2, 1910, aged 20 years, 1 month and 7 days. After her death the remains were taken to the home of her parents in Celina.

She was converted at Mt. Carmel at the age of fourteen and joined the church at that place, since which time she has remained a faithful Christian.

August 27, 1908, she was married to Hamer C. Shively, to which union was born one child, Donald.

She was a good and faithful daughter and wife, and her influence was felt everywhere for good.

Two sisters and one brother have gone before, and four sisters, one brother, father, mother, husband and baby and a host of friends are left to mourn her death.

The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 7, at Swamp College church, being conducted by Rev. S. F. Bauders. Interment in the cemetery near by.

        A calm and undisturbed repose,

       Unbroken by the last of foes".

JEFFERSON -- Mrs. Nellie Gertrude Myers, 74, of Jefferson Rt 1, Box 177, died Tuesday afternoon at a Salem hospital.

She was born in Nebraska, came to Grants Pass in 1900 and lived in Whiteson, North Bend, then Albany from 1945 to 1954 when she moved to Jefferson.

Surviving are widower Chester, Jefferson; sons Kenneth Shively, Columbus, Ohio, and Burdett Shively, Eureka, Calif.; daughter Stella Smith, Coos Bay; brothers Ray Garlick, Jefferson, and James Garlick, Florence; sisters Mary Elson, Leaburg, and Pearl Smith, Vale; and several grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Jefferson Christian Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, McMinnville.  Arrangements are by Fisher Funeral Home, Albany.

Joseph E. Shively, Retired Hobart Mfg. Foreman, Dies

Joseph Earl Shively, 85, of 418 S. Wayne, died at 4:15 a.m. in Piqua Memorial Hospital where he had been patient two days after having been in failing health several years.

Born in Mercer County, March 13, 1885, he was a son of Isaac and Elmira Fitzwater Shively. He was married to the former Maude Baker on June 5, 1907 in Spencerville. They moved from Spencerville to Piqua in 1924.

Mr. Shively was a retired foreman at Hobart Manufacturing Co. and a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Maude, a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Grunert (Vonda) of Piqua; two sons, Ashley B. Shively and Paul L. both of Piqua; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and five brothers, Roy Shively of Manton, Mich., George of Fife Lake, Mich., Ray of Modesto, Calif., Carl of Bakersfield, Calif., and Hamer of Eugene, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Carl Hahn at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Cron Funeral Home with burial in Mimia Memorial Park.

Friends may call Tuesday at the funeral home between 3 and 5 p.m. and 7 and 9 pm.

George Angell Shively was born 10-Jan-1875 in Salina, Mercer County, Ohio and died 22-Jun-1971 in Kalkaska, Kalkaska County, Michigan.  He was married 18-Jan-1905 to Dana M. Hoel who was born 23-May-1883 and died 3-July-1972.  She was the daughter of John and Lydia Hoel.

Fife Lake Man Dies At 96

KALKASKA – George A. Shively, 96, of R. 1, Fife Lake, died Tuesday at a Kalkaska hospital. He had been a resident of the area since 1914, when he moved from Lansing. He was born January 10, 1885 at Salina, Ohio.

Mr. Shively is survived by his wife, Dana Hoel Shively, whom he married January 18, 1905, at Salina.  Other survivors include three sons, Carl of Fife Lake, Kenneth of Lincoln Park and Novel of Manton; four brothers, Hamer of Oregon, Ray and Carl, both of California, and Roy of Manton; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Garfield Free Methodist Church, where he had been a longtime member. Rev. J. C. Hecocks will officiate and burial will be in the Sheridan Cemetery at Sheridan, Michigan.

The body will be at the Schwartz-Wolfe funeral home in Kalkaska until Friday morning.

SHIVELY – Mrs. Dana M. Shively, 89, of Route 1, Fife Lake passed away Monday evening at the Salem Nursing Home after a long illness. Surviving are three sons, Carl of Fife Lake, Norval of Manton, and Kenneth of Lincoln Park, Mich.; six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Shively was born May 23, 1883 in Ohio, the daughter of John and Lydia Hoel, and was married Jan. 18, 1905 in Salina, Ohio to George Shively. He preceded her in death in 1971. She had been a Kalkaska County resident since 1914 and was a member of the Garfield Free Methodist Church where services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday with Rev. J. C. Hecocks officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 Friday at the Sheridan Cemetery in Sheridn, Mich. Friends may call at the Schwartz-Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska until Friday noon when Mrs. Shively will be removed to the church for services.

Mrs. Hawks, 84, Succumbs Today

Mrs. Virgie Shively Hawks, 84, died today at 4 a.m. at her home, 120 Gray St., after being in declining health for several years.  She was born in Franklin County, March 12, 1886, a daughter of the late Jacob and Merinda Scott Shively.  She had been living in Danville since 1919 and was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Albert J. Hawks of the home; three brothers, Jake Shively and Milton Shively, both of Danville, and Irving Shively of Ferrum; and three sisters, Mrs. Beulah S. Hancock of Danville, Mrs. Mary S. Hatcher of Ferrum and Mrs. Lula S. Ingram of Salem.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel.  Interment will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.  The body is at Townes Funeral Home and the family is at the residence, 120 Gray St.

George C. Shively, 53, Final Rites Thursday

BASSETT -- Final rites will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. for George C. Shively of Rt. 3 Bassett, who died early yesterday at his home after several years of illness.  The services will be held in the home with interment in Mountain View Cemetery north of Rocky Mount.

The body will be taken to the Collins funeral home today at 4:30 and will rest there until time for the rites.

Mr. Shiveley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Donnie Boling Shively; three sons, Donald Shively of the U.S. Air Force, Carlton Shively of the U.S. Air Navy, and Rodney Shively of the home; one daughter, Miss Gloria Shively also of the home; four brothers, Mark and Irvin Shively, both of Furrum, Jacob Shively of Danville, Milton Shively of Ringgold; four sisters, Mrs. Albert Hawks, Mrs. Beulah Hancock, both of Danville, Mrs. Tom Ingram of Roanoke and Mrs. Walter Hatcher of Ferrum.

Isaac Shively And Wife, Elmira A. Fitzwater, Who Lived In Mercer County, Ohio And Wexford County, Michigan

Isaac Shively was born on 22-August-1847  in Darke County, OH and died 12-May-1920 in Wexford County, MI.  He was the son of David Miller Shively (1803-1883) and Esther Angle (1814-1888).  Isaac was married in Mercer County, OH to Elmira A. Fitzwater on 22-March-1874. Elmira A. Fitzwater was born 20-November-1850 and died 3-December-1913 in Wexford County, MI.  She was the daughter of Phillip Fitzwater and Adeline Hanley.

The family of Isaac Shively and Elmira Fitzwater are found on the 1900 Butler Township, Mercer County, OH census.  Listed in the household are Isaac Shively age 52 born August 1847, wife Almira age 47 born November 1850, daughter Nellie age 20 born December 1879, son William age 18 born December 1881, son Amer age 16 born August 1883, son Joseph age 15 born March 1885, son Walter age 12 born July 1887, son Daniel age 8 born October 1891, and son Royl age 7 born April 1893.  The family is found on the 1910 Butler Township, Mercer County, OH census.  In the household are Isaac Shively age 63, wife Elmira A age 59, daughter Nellie age 30, son William H age 28, son David C age 18, son Royal C age 17, son Joseph E age 24, mother in law Adeline Fitzwater age 86.

Joseph E. Shively, Retired Hobart Mfg. Foreman, Dies

Joseph Earl Shively, 85, of 418 S. Wayne, died at 4:15 a.m. in Piqua Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient two days after having been in failing health several years.

Born in Mercer County, March 13, 1885, he was a son of Isaac and Elmira Fitzwater Shively.  He was married to the former Maude Baker on June 5, 1907 in Spencerville.  They moved from Spencerville to Piqua in 1924.

Mr. Shively was a retired foreman at Hobart Manufacturing Co. and a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Maude, a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Grunert (Vonda) of Piqua; two sons, Ashley B. Shively and Paul L. both of Piqua; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and five brothers, Roy Shively of Manton, Mich., George of Fife Lake, Mich., Ray of Modesto, Calif., Carl of Bakersfield, Calif., and Hamer of Eugene, Oregon.

He was preceeded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Carl Hahn at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Cron Funeral Home with burial in Miami Memorial Park.

Nelson J. Shively Who Lived In Allen County, Kansas

The following biographical information was taken from the History of Allen and Woodson Counties, Kansas, 1901, L. Wallace Duncan, Iola, Kansas, Page 189:

Nelson J. Shively, of Marmaton township, is one of Allen County’s progressive and prosperous farmers.  He settled here in 1882 and was an emigrant from Marshall County, Indiana.  He was born in Elkhart County, Indiana, January 16, 1853.  His father, Isaac Shively, of Osage township, Allen County, was born in Ohio in 1830 and went into Elkhart County, Indiana, in early life.  He married Catharine Leer, who died in Allen County, Kansas, in 1886 at the age of fifty-one years.   Their children (Isaac and Catharine Shively) are:  Nelson J.; Fernandes, deceased; Amos, of Osage township; Edward; Charles and Alice Shively of Elreno, Oklahoma.

Our subject began life at about eighteen years of age as a farmer and has continued it since with varying degrees of success.  He was induced to come west by the heralding cry of “cheap lands” and in 1882 he brought his small amount of resources into Allen County and made a payment on his first eighty acres of land, in Osage township.  He exchanged this for the southwest quarter of section 20, town 24, range 21 and took on a debt of sixteen hundred dollars.  This he has succeeded in liquidating and has purchased an additional eighty acres and has the whole clear of incumbrance.

Mr. Shively was married in Marshall County, Indiana, February 6, 1879, to Ella Caldwell, a daughter of Archibald Caldwell, who went into the Hoosier State from Virginia.  Mrs. Shively died February 13, 1899, leaving five children: Grace A., Opal, Alice, Carl and Harry.

Mr. Shively is one of the leading and active Republicans of Allen County. He frequents county conventions of his party and can be depended upon not only to support the whole ticket but to work for its success at the polls.  He is identified with the Osage Valley Baptist Church.

N. J. Shively, of Moran, Passed Away Last Night

Died:  At his home in Moran at 9 o'clock Friday evening, December 25, 1925, N. J. Shively, age 72.

The Register's Moran reporter has made reference frequently of late to the ill health of Mr. Shively, so the announcement of his death will not come as a surprise to Register readers, but it will be read with no less regret on that account by a very wide circle of friends.

Nelson J. Shively was on of the oldest settlers of Allen county.  He came here in 1882 from Marshall County, Indiana, and located in Marmaton Township where he was during the remainder of his active life, successfully engaged in farming.

Mr. Shively was married while still living in Indiana to Ella Caldwell, who died Feb. 13, 1899. For many years Mr. Shively was active in the politics of Allen county, never as an office holder or an officer seeker, but because he was an aggressive and convinced Republican and desired to see the policies of that party dominant in the state and nation.  He had a most attractive personality, made friends easily and kept them without effort.  He was a man of the highest integrity, demanding always the complete confidence of everybody who knew him.

Mr. Shively is survived by three daughters and two sons:  Mrs. M. C. Lacey, of Iola; Mrs. Horace Paske, of Toronto, Miss Grace Shively, of Moran; Carl Shively, of Moran, and Harry Shively, of Iola.  The funeral arrangements have not yet been decided upon.

N. J. Shively, a Pioneer Settler, Died Friday Night -- Funeral

Sunday Afternoon

MORAN, Dec. 26.--Many friends were grieved to learn that Mr. N. J.  Shively had passed away about nine o'clock Christmas evening after an illness of the past ten days.  His death, however, had been almost hourly expected for the past three days and his last illness from the very beginning was very alarming.  Several years ago Mr. Shively began to fall in health and he was induced to dispose of his farm interests and came to town to make his home with his two daughters, Misses Grace and Lou.  The change was made and while he suffered greatly at times, he quickly responded to treatment and would soon be about the care of his lawn and garden that evidenced his thrift and energy that so characterized his life on the farm.  Mr. Shively is gone and Moran will miss for a long time his familiar figure and kindly, cordial greetings and will hold in grateful memory his worth as a noble father and splendid citizen.  Of his immediate family circle he leaves to mourn his loss his two sons, Harry Shively, of Iola, Carl Shively of Moran; three daughters, Mrs. M. C. Lacey, of Iola, Mrs. Horace Paske of Toronto, and Miss Grace Shively of the home address.  The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon.

In 1902 Mr. Shively married a second time to Alice Bull Smith.  Her obituary was found in The Iola Daily Register, Friday Evening, June 17, 1904, Page 7, Column1:

Mrs. Alice Shively's Death

Mrs. Alice Shively, of Moran, died suddenly at two o'clock Wednesday morning. She has been in apparently perfect health until Sunday night, when she attended church, but was taken ill early Monday morning and gradually grew worse until her death.  The cause of her death is attributed to kidney disease.  The funeral services will be held from the Moran M. E. church today, Rev. J. H. Gordon officiating.

Mrs. Shively has lived in Allen county for twenty-five years, and was well known. She came to Allen county with her parents from Illinois, where she was born.  Her maiden name was Alice Bull.  She was first married to Harvey Smith, who died several years ago.  Later she became the wife of Nelson Shively, who survives her. She had many friends who will mourn her loss.

Children Of Abraham Shively And Barbara Kibler In Allen And Hardin Counties, Ohio

Abraham Shively was born ca. 1815, died 24-Dec-1861.  His wife was Barbara Kibler born ca. 1817, died 15-Dec-1899.  Barbara married a second time on 14-Sep-1871 in Allen County, Ohio to David Spellman. Barbara Kibler Shively Spellman filed for divorce from David Spellman in Allen County, Ohio in 1891. Children of Abraham and Barbara Shively were:  Adam born 1840, Isaac born 1842, Daniel born 1846, Lucinda born 1849, Caroline born 1851, Solomon born 1852 and Jemima born 1855.  

From the Ohio Death Certificate for Adam Shively it is known that he was born 28-Dec-1840 and died at age 73 years, 3 months and 8 days in Alger, Hardin County, Ohio on 7-Apr-1914. He was buried in Preston Cemetery.

ISAAC SHIVELY

Issac Shively, son of Abraham and Barbara Shively, was born in Seneca county, Ohio, April 6, 1842, and died at his home in Alger, Hardin county, Ohio, March 15, 1910, aged 67 years, 11 months and 8 days.

He moved with his parents to Allen county, Ohio, when 15 years of age, where he lived until 1898, when he moved with his family to Alger where he has since lived.

He was united in marriage to Sarah Hipsher, April 23, 1865.   To this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters; Jessie, who died early infancy, George W., Charity, Charity Ellen Fisher, Nancy Rosetta Sauner, and Nora Belle Klingler.

He enlisted in Co. G, 57th Reg. of Ohio Volunteers, in 1861 and for three years and eighteen days was a faithful defender of his country.  He was honorably discharged. 

Samuel Shively was born ca. 1844.  He died of measles on 28-February-1863 at Young's Point, LA while serving in Co. G, 57th Reg Ohio Inf. Volunteers

The following information was found in Ingersoll’s Century History, Santa Monica Bay Cities, Prefaced with A Brief History of the State of California A Condensed History of Los Angeles County 1542 to 1908, Luther A. Ingersoll, Los Angeles,1908, pages 414-416.

DANIEL SHIVELY – The names of Daniel Shively, with that of his most estimable widow, are intimately associated with the history of the city of Sawtelle.  Mr. Shively was a native of Ohio and was born in Hardin County, October 24^th, 1846.  At the age of nine years he was compelled to assume responsibilities to aid in support of the family that usually come to men only.  Upon the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted in the 130^th Indiana Infantry and served in the ranks for a period of three years, participating in many of the bloodiest battles of the conflict.  He was twice wounded, an injury to his head causing him pain up to the day of his death.  After mustering out of the army, Mr. Shively followed contracting in brick work near Lima, Ohio.

In 1876 he married at Fort Wayne, Indiana, Miss Sarah Lucelia Booth, a daughter of Sidney Smith and Mary Jane (Whaiples) Booth, of Mentor, Ohio.  Mr. Booth was of English parentage, a son of Sir John Booth, Earl of Booth Ford, North of England, a landlord of wealth and high social standing.  He came to America and located at Mentor.  Sidney Smith Booth latterly located with his family at Paynesville, Ohio, and it was here that Mrs. Shively spent her girlhood.  She was educated in a private school under the care of a governess.  Mrs. Mary Janes Whaiples Booth was a direct descendant of William Whaiples, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Immediately after marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Shively came west to Peru, Kansas, where he engaged in farming and she, meantime, taught school.  Later they lived at Dedan, Chanute and finally at Chard, Kansas, where they engaged extensively in merchandising and where he held the office of postmaster.  Here they suffered severe loss by fire—the store with a valuable stock of merchandise all going up in smoke.  Mr. and Mrs. Shively then went to Coffeyville, Kansas, and she engaged in the restaurant business, while he conducted a photograph gallery.  In 1888 they came to California and for a time lived on Spring Street, Los Angeles.

In 1901 they located at Sawtelle when the now thrifty little city was in its infancy.  They invested in town property and became a factor in its industrial , social and civic advancement.

Mr. Shively was in every way a most exemplary and useful citizen.  He was a devout member of the religious order of Dunkards, was broad in his piety and tolerant of the religious beliefs of others.  He was an honored member of Burnside Post, No. 188, G.A.R., of Sawtelle, and the following tribute to his memory is quoted from a Memorial Address of the Post published in the Sawtelle Sentinel:

“In the death of Daniel Shively, another name is stricken from the ever lessening list of G.A.R.   He was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer.  The stranger and the beggar never failed to find food and shelter at his hands.  He was often at the bedside of the sick, and he delighted in the performance of all kinds of neighborly offices.  He was a man of sound sense and strong convictions.  He was candid and outspoken in his convictions.  He lived nobly and died peacefully.”

Mr. Shively died June 26^th, 1907, the result of a stroke of paralysis about six months previous thereto.  The funeral obsequies took place at the Baptist Church, the Rev. George Taylor preaching the sermon which was followed by the service of the G.A.R. and the W.R.C.  Interment was in Sunset Cemetery, at which a choir rendered his favorite hymn, Only Remembered By What I Have Done.

From the family album with no source listed was the obituary for Lucinda Shively Mumea.

Lucinda Shively Mumea, was born in Billtown, Hardin County, Ohio, February 14, 1849.  She died at her home in Columbus Grove, Ohio, August 29th, 1912,  at the age of 63 years, 6 months and 15 days.  She was married to John T. Mumea, April 23rd, 1865.  To this union was born six children, George D., Barbara B., Daniel W., John T., Jemima R., and Charlottia M.  Two of these children preceded her to the heavenly home.  She leaves to mourn her decease, a husband, two sons, two daughters, nine grandchildren and two great-grand children, two sisters and two brothers.  In addition to these of her own family, a host of friends and neighbors, who knew her intimately as a modest, unassuming, but kind hearted christian woman, who with loving heart and helpful hand was always read to do what she could to minister to the necessities of others and make their lot in life a pleasant one, bear testimony to her faithfulness and kindness in all possible way.  Her funeral services were held at the home Saturday morning, August 31st, her pastor, Rev. Dr. Carter, speaking from the words, "She hath done what she could"--Mark 14:18.  Her remains were laid to rest in the Bogart cemetery.

Mrs. Caroline Fisher Dies At Col. Grove

COLUMBUS GROVE, Nov. 5--Mrs. Caroline Fisher, 80, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Eversole, south of Columbus Grove, Wednesday afternoon.  Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Christian church and burial will be at the Bogart cemetery.

Rev. Jacob Frazier will officiate. The following children survive:  Mrs. Charles Fetter, of Lima; Mr. Sol Fisher, of Bluffton, O.; Daniel and Newton Fisher, of Columbus Grove; Mrs. Bertha Mumea of Plymouth, O.; Mrs. O. C. Scott of Chardon, O.; Jesse Fisher, of Monroe, Mich.; Michael Fisher, of Lansing, Mich.; Mrs. Jesse Mumea of Monroe, Mich., and the daughter, Mrs. Eversole, at whose home Mrs. Fisher had resided recently.

Saul Shibely

ALGER, Dec. 16--Funeral services for Saul Shibely, 80, who died at 1:30 p.m. Friday in his home here, will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Alger M. E. church. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery at Ada.  Shibely, who had been a resident of Alger and vicinity all his life, is survived by a son, Ezra, of Ada; one daughter, Mrs. Etta Gossard, of Alger; a sister, Mrs. Jeamia Peoples, of Roundhead; five grandchildren, and three great grand-children.

Mrs. Jemima Peoples

ALGER, Dec. 18--Mrs. Jemima Peoples, 81, of Plesant Hill, north of here, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday in her home after a week's illness of bronchial pneumonia.  She was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church.  She had lived practically all her life in this district.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. John Preston, McGuffey Route 1, Mrs. Della Tidd, Belle Center; one son, John Peoples, Harrod Route 1 and 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday from The Methodist Episcopal church by the Rev. Tucker, pastor. Burial will be in Preston cemetery.The Hanson funeral home has charge of service.
