Solomon C. Shively Who Lived In Illinois And Bonneville County, Idaho

Solomon C. Shively was born in April-1855 in IN.  He was the son of Stephen Shively (1828-1912) who married in Clinton County, IN ca 1850 to Catharine Metzger (1831-1914). The parents of Stephen Shively were Jacob Shively (1805-1872) and Susan Metzger (1806-1883). The parents of Jacob Shively were Johannes (John) Shively, Sr (1775-1848) and Esther Wolf (1785-1822). The parents of Johannes (John) Shively were Christian Shively, Sr (1744-1834) and Susanna Cripe (1748-1818). The father of Christian Shively was Ulrich (Uli) Shively baptized 8-Jan-1722 in village of Oberdorf, District of Waldenburg, Canton of Baselland, Switzerland.  (For additional information on Solomon C. Solomon C. Shively was married twice. His first wife was Sophrona (last name unknown) and his second wife was Mary Jane Yount.  Listed on the 1870 Town of Oakley, Macon County, IL census record is the family of Stephen Shively age 41, wife Catharine age 39, son John age 17, son Solomon age 15 and daughter Susana age 9.  Located on the 1880 Cerro Gordo, Piatt County, IL census is the family of S A (should be S C) Shively age 26, wife Sophrona age 25, son Joseph age 6, daughter Lilly age 3, daughter Lucy age 1, Ella Long age 15 and L Long.  On the 1900 Bingham Village, Fayette County, IL census is the household of Soliman C Shively born Apr-1855 age 45, wife Mary J. born Mar-1858 age 42, son David H. born May-1881 age 19, son William O. born Sep-1883 age 16, daughter Vinnie M. born Sep-1883 age 16, daughter Catherine born Jul-1888 age 11, son John born Nov-1891 age 8, son Stephen born Nov-1891 age 8 and daughter Mary born Jul-1893 age 6. Listed on the 1910 Decatur City, Macon County, IL census is the family of Solomon C. Shively age 54, wife Mary J. age 52, son David H. age 28, son Willie O. age 26, daughter May age 26, son Stephen age 18 and daughter Mary age 16. On the 1920 Bonneville County, ID census is Will O. Shively age 36, half-brother David H. age 38, brother Steve age 28, father Soml C. age 67 and mother Mary J. age 65.

Death Of S. C. Shively

S. C. Shively, on old-time resident of New Sweden, died at Denver, Colo., Saturday night. Mr. Shively was on his was home from a visit to the south and east and was taken suddenly ill while on board the train. He was removed from the train at Denver and taken to a hospital. Word was sent to his relatives here but he passed away before his son could reach that place.

Mr. Shively was 71 years of age. During the latter part of October last he left here on a trip to Louisiana where he has a daughter. Having spent considerable time with her he went to Illinois where he has two sisters and paid a visit to them, starting from there to Idaho Falls the middle of last week.

Mr. Shively has been a resident of the New Sweden district for the past ten years and the Shivelys are among the substantial farmers of that section.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Mary Shively, the deceased leaves five sons and three daughters. The sons are W. O., D. H. and Steven of New Sweden, J. E. of this city, and J. P. of Forest Hill, Calif.  The daughters are Mrs. C. B. Sleppy and Mrs. B. F. Moore of New Sweden and Mrs. M. J. Netzer of Iowa City, La.

W. O. Shively, who went to Denver upon word from his father's illness, is expected to return this evening with the body. Funeral arrangements have not been made at the present time, but it is understood that burial will take place some time tomorrow.

In reviewing the census records Solomon and 1st wife Sophrona Shively had at least the following children:  Joseph born ca. 1874, Lilly born ca. 1877, Lucy born ca. 1879 and David Henry born 1881.   Solomon and 2nd wife Mary Jane had the following children:  twins William Oren and Vinnie May born September 1883, Catherine born July 1888, twins John and Stephen born November 1891, and Mary born July 1893.  There is an obituary in the Post Register for a J. E. (Jack) Shively which mentions he was born Nov. 21, 1892 and was a brother to the children of Solomon and Mary Jane Shively.  It is not known at this time if this is the twin brother of Stephen or if this is another son of Solomon and Mary Jane.

Death Came Quietly

Concerning the fatal illness of her brother Solomon Shively, Mrs. Amos Wrightsman of Cerro Gordo has received a letter from her nephew Steve Shively, in which he tells that his father was taken ill at Denver, Feb. 5, while enroute home to Idaho Falls, and was taken from the train and to a hospital where he died at 3 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 7.  In the hospital the physicians declared that not only was the sick man a victim of kidney trouble, but pneumonia had developed, his temperature being 103 when he arrived in the hospital. In addition to the hospital staff specialists were called to treat him without avail.  After being taken to the hospital the sick man watched the hurried work of his attendants and commented "You act as though you thought I was going to die". A moment later he shifted his position, settled himself as though for a nap, and never afterwards was conscious. In response to a telegram telling of his illness, his son William Shively, went to Denver and accompanied the body to Idaho Falls where funeral services were conducted Thursday, Feb. 11.

Death Comes To Mary Shively, Aged Resident

Mrs. Mary Janes Shively, 80, wife of the late W. S. Shively of this city, died Wednesday at 10:50 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Sleepey, on route 4.  Death came after a brief illness.

Mrs. Shively was born in Gentry county, Mo., on March 8, 2859.  Before coming to Idaho Falls 22 years ago she lived in Decatur, Ill.

Survivors include the following sons and daughters:  Mrs. Charles Sleppey, Mrs. Ben Moore, Idaho Falls; Mrs. John Metzler of Iowa, La.; Joe Shively of McKeown, Calif.; J. E. Shively of Twin Falls and W. A. Shively and Steve Shively of Idaho Falls.  Fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.

The body is at the McHan funeral home.

Stephen Shively Dies At Cerro Gordo At 84 Years

Stephen Shively, of Cerro Gordo, died Saturday afternoon after an illness of 13 weeks with diabetes, from which he has suffered for years.  Thirteen weeks ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and since then he has been bedfast  His throat was paralyzed but his condition improved and until last Thursday has been gaining strength.  Last Thursday, he suffered a second stroke of paralysis and since has been unable to speak or take nourishment.

Mr. Shively was born in Dayton, O. December 28, 1828 and had he lived one week longer would have been 84 years old.  He moved into Clinton county, Illinois early in life and into Macon county in 1858.  Before coming to Macon county he was married to Catherine Metzler, August 8, 1850, two years after he joined the Dunkard church.  Eight years after his marriage he was elected a deacon of the church and served continuously until his death. 

He lived in Macon county until 1881 he moved to Cerro Gordo to make his home.

He leaves a widow, three children, S. C. Shively, Decatur; Mrs. Anna Wrightsman, Mrs. John A. Cripe, Cerro Gordo, 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 10 o'clock in the Church of the Brethren in Cerro Gordo, the Rev. Mr. Adams officiating.  Burial will be in the West Frantz cemetery in Cerro Gordo.

Mrs. Stephen Shively Dies In Cerro Gordo

Was Nearly 83 Years Old And Lived In Macon County More Than Fifty Years

Mrs. Stephen Shively died in her home in Cerro Gordo, Thursday, after an illness of several years.  She was 82 years, 11 months and 11 days old.  Mrs. Shively was born near Dayton, Ohio, Nov. 4, 1831 and with her father moved to Indiana in 1836. She united with the German Baptist church in 1849 and was married to Stephen Shively Aug. 8, 1850.  Five children were born, three of whom still live, these three being: Solomon C. Shively, Decatur; Susanna Wrightsman and Hannah Cripe, both of Cerro Gordo.  She leaves 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.  She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Shively, of Lordsburg, Cal.

Mrs. Shively came to Macon county in 1858, moving to Cerro Gordo in 1881.  Her husband died December, 1912.  They were both among the first members of the German Baptist church.  Mrs. Shively was well known throughout the community and was loved as a mother and true friend.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 o'clock this afternoon in the Church of The Brethren, in Cerro Gordo.  Burial will be in the West Frantz cemetery.

David Henry Shively From Macon County, Illinois To Bonneville County, Idaho

Sometimes a story is so interesting that further research needs to be done. There are several newspapers that record the following incident. This account was extracted from The Morning Oregonian, Portland, Oregon, Saturday, June 23, 1928, Page 1, Column 4:

Farmer Survives Bolt

Lightning Tears Man's Clothes But Hoe Saves Life

Idaho Falls, Idaho, June 22.-- (AP) - Although a bolt of lightning tore his clothes to shreds, splintered a hoe handle in his hands and rendered him unconscious for an hour last night, Dave Shively, 44, farmer living near here, apparently suffered no ill effects except  burns about his head and arms and slight shock.   A physician said the hoe, by forming a ground contact, saved Shively's life.

Almost eight months later the story was still appearing in the newspapers.  Found in The Bradford Era, Bradford, Pennsylvania, Saturday, February 2, 1929, Page 4, Column 3:

David H. Shively Dies In Hospital

David H. Shively, a resident of this community for the past 23 years, passed away in a local hospital Friday morning at 8:05 o'clock.   His death came following an operation performed a few days ago.

Mr. Shively was born on May 29, 1881, at Cerrogordo, Ill.  He moved to Decatur when a boy and lived there until 23 years ago when he came to Idaho Falls.

Mr. Shively was a farmer by occupation and also did some construction work.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. M. J. Shively of Idaho Falls;  four brothers, W. O. Shively and Steve Shively, both residing in Idaho Falls; J. E. Shively of Twin Falls and Joseph P. Shively of McKeon, Calif.,and three sisters, Mrs. John Metzbar of Iowa, La., Mrs. Charles Sleppy and Mrs. Ben Moore, both of Idaho Falls.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.   The body is at the McHan Funeral Home.

Shively Rites Will Be Held Here Sunday

Funeral rites will be conducted in the McHan Funeral chapel Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for David Shively, resident here for the past 23 years and farmer residing west of Idaho Falls.  He passed away in a local hospital Friday morning following an operation.

The Rev. J. Samuel Bailey will officiate.  Interment will be in the Rose Hill cemetery.

Shively) died 25-Feb-1934, Solomon C Shively born 16-Apr-1855 and died 8-Feb-1926 and his second wife, Mary J. Shively born 8-Mar-1859 and died 29-Mar-1939. Also buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery are William Oren Shively and May Shively Sleppy, who were the step-brother and step-sister of David Henry Shively.

David Henry Shively was the son of Solomon C Shively and his first wife, Sophrona.  It is recorded in The Decatur Daily Republican, Decatur, Illinois, Friday, June 1, 1883, Page 4, Column 4:     Solomon C. Shively vs Sophrona Shively, divorce, decree pro confess; evidence heard by court, and decree granted.    Solomon Shively married 2nd to Mary Jane Yount Peck on 21-June-1883 in Macon County, IL.
