James B. Shively Death Certificate

James Buchanan Shively was born on 11-Nov-1856 and died on 2-Dec-1918 in Chester County, PA. He was the son of Solomon Shively and his first wife, Rebecca Embick. James, also referred to as J. B. Shively in the records, was married first to Anna Lovella Hefflefinger on 6-Feb-1889.  She was born on 7-Sep-1862 and died on 5-Apr-1906 in Cumberland County, PA. She was the daughter of David and Elizabeth Hefflefinger. James Shively was married second to Nellie Caldwell on 31-Jul-1907. She died in 1912.  James married a third tiime on 1-Dec-1917 in Chester County, PA to Mrs. Kline. She may have been Laura Beihn (Biehn) who was married to Horace Kline. One known daughter, Helen E. Shively, was born Aug-1892 to James Shively and Anna Hefflefinger.  Helen married George G. Gayman.

The following newspaper obituary was found in The Chronicle, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, Thursday, December 5, 1918, Page 1, Column 6 and Page 4, Column 1:

SHIVELY

Dr. James B. Shively, a former prominent Shippensburg physician, died at his home in West Chester early Monday morning after a brief illness from a complication of diseases.

Dr. Shively was born near Chambersburg, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Shively. During his young manihood he studied medicine, graduated from Jefferson Medical College and began the practice of medicine in Greenvillage, associated with the late Dr. David Maclay. Later he opened an office in Shippensburg where he conducted the practice of medicine a score of years or more, enjoying a large practice and the esteem of a wide circle of friends.

In 1911 he moved to West Chester, where he had since continued in his profession. Dr. Shively was prominent in his profession and possesed many admirable qualities. He was a member of the West Chester Presbyterian Church and during the past year served as deacon in his church.

His first wife who was Miss Anna Hefflefinger, died in Shippensburg twelve years ago.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. George G. Gayman, of Doylestown, and four step children.

Funeral services were held at the Shively home yesterday morning. The body was brought to Shippensburg last evening and interment was made in Spring Hill Cemetery this morning. The Rev. J. D. Lindssay, of the Presbyterian Church officiating at the grave.

Death Of Mrs. Anna L. Shively

Mrs. Anna L. Shively, wife of Dr. J. B. Shively, died at her residence on East Main street, Thursday afternoon, after an illness of a month from a complication of diseases. She was the daughter of David Hefflefinger, of Newburg, Cumberland county and was born in that place, September 7th, 1862, and was in her 44th years. She was married to Dr. J. B. Shively, February 6th, 1889, at the home of her parents, by Rev. S. S. Wylie, her pastor, and for the past sixteen years, Mr. and Mrs. Shively have resided in this place, where they enjoyed a wide circle of acquaintances. Mrs. Shively endeared herself to many by her charming personality and bright disposition. She was a most devoted wife and mother. She will not only be missed in her home and by her intimate associates, but in the church where she was a faithful worker taking such an active part in the missionary circle of the Presbyterian Church, of which she had been a member for a number of years.

It was a strange co-incident that she was taken ill about the same time as her pastor, Rev. Dr. W. A. McCarrell, and died a few hours after he had passed away and was burined just a few hours after his intermenet. Besides her husband and one daughter, Miss Helen, to mourn the loss of a faithful wife and loving mother, her aged parents Mr. and Mrs. David Hefflefinger, of Newburg, and these brothers and sisters; William Hefflefinger, of Newville; Milton and Ellis, of Harrisburg; Clarence, of Denber, Colorado; Mrs. George McCoy, of Chambersburg[ Mrs.  Alice, wife of Rev. J. A. Burkholder, of Franklintown, York county. The funeral services were held at her late residence, Monday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock conducted by Rev. Thomas MCarrell, of Mechanisburg, and Rev. George C. Henry.  Interment was made in Spring Hill Cemetery. The pall bearers were, Messrs. Dr. Entrekin, J. E. Boher, J. W. McPherson, W. H. Robertson, G. W. Hines and J. A. Kell.

Dr. Shively wishes to extend thanks to all friends who kindly aided in any way, during the illness and death of his wife.

Pretty Morning Wedding

Dr. James E. Shively, Of Shippensburg, And Miss Nellie G. Caldwell, of Pittsburg, Wedded In Carlisle

The home of Rev. and Mrs. J. B. Polsgrove, 122 North Hanover street, was this morning the scene of a very pretty home wedding, when their friend, Miss Nellie G. Caldwell, of The Children's Home Society, of Pittsburg, became the bride of Dr. James B. Shively, of Shippensburg, Pa., at 7:30. The rooms was beautifully and tastily decorated with palms, ferns, and smilax. The bridge stood in veritable fairy bower. The ring ceremony of the Methodist Episcopal Church was used, the Rev. J. B. Polsgrove, officiating. Miss Rhoda E. Reeser, of Carlisle, played the wedding march from "Lehengrin", and during the ceremony DeKeven's "Oh, Promise Me" was rendered softly and impressively; "Hearts And Flowers" was the effective finale.

The bride wore a Princess of white batiste, elaborately trimmed with lace over white taffeta, with a white picture hat, and carried a trailing bouquet of bridal roses and maidenhair ferns. The groom wore the conventional frock coat.

After the ceremony an elaborate wedding breakfast was served at the New Wellington, the parlor being especially decorated for the occasion. Mr. L. Harold Harris, of Carlisle, gave the toast to the bride. The nuptials being very private, only the immediate friends attended. Those present were Miss Helen E. Shively, of Shippensburg; Mrs. Dr Dugal, of Milton; Miss Anna Scott, of Orbisonia; Miss Emma Smith, of Harrisburg; Mrs. Dr. Welsh, of Waynesboro; Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Polsgrove, Mrs. M. A. Harris, Mrs. L. H. Harris, Miss Rhoda E. Reeser and Mr. Caryll Welsh, of Carlisle, and Mrs. Margaret Hunter, of Shade Gap.

The couple left of the 10.44 train for an extended trip of six weeks, to New York, Buffalo, Niagara, Canada and the Thousand Islands. After their return they will reside in Shippensburg, where the groom is a prominent physician.

MRS. JOHTN B. SHIVELY

Word was received in Shippensburg Monday of the death of Mrs. Shively, the wife of Dr. John B. Shively, who practiced in that city for several years. Deceased was the second wife of the doctor, and had lived in Shippensburg about four years. She was operated on in West Chester, Pa., Thursday last, but died Saturday, not being able to recover from the ordeal. Interment was made in Shade Gap Tuesday.

Benjamin F. Shively And Wife Elmina Thomas From Franklin County, PA To Rooks County, KS

Benjamin F. Shively was born Jan-1846 in Franklin County, PA and died 5-Deb-1916 in Rooks County, KS.  He was married to Elmina Thomas who was born 1846 and died 25-Jan-1917 in Rooks County, KS.  Both are buried in Zurich Cemetery, Zurich, Rooks County, KS.  Benjamin F. Shively was the son of Solomon Shively and Rebecca Embich.

Located on the 1850 Green Township, Franklin County, PA census is the family of Solomon Shiveley age 40, wife Rebecca age 35, daughter Anna M. age 9, son John E. age 7, daughter Hannah L. age 6, son Benjamin F. age 4, son Henry C age 3, and daughter Catherine age 1. Listed on the 1880 Rooks County, KS census if the household of B. F. Shivley age 33, daughter Elmina age 32, son Edgar S. age 5, daughter Adiline age 7, son Orlanda Ross age 5, daughter Mary B. age 4, daughter Bessie G. age 2 and daughter Rosa G. age 11 months. Listed on the 1900 Village of Zurich and continuation of Logan Township, Rooks County, KS is the family of Benjamin Shively born Jan-1846 age 54 married 29 years, wife Ella born 1846 age 53 having borne 13 children with 13 living, son Orlanda R. born Sept-1874 age 25, daughter Rosa G. born Jul-1879 age 20, son John E. born Oct-1880 age 19, daughter Ella M. born Dec-1881 age 18, son Benjamin F. born Aug-1884 age 15, daughter Nora born Nov-1885 age 14, daughter Nettie B. born Jul-1887 age 12 and son James F. born Nov-1888 age 11.

Located in the Plainville Gazette, Plainville, Rooks County, KS, Thursday, November 18, 1909, Page 42, Columns 1-2 was an article featuring B. F. Shively. Included in the article was the picture above of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Shively and the picture to the right of the residence of B. F. Shively.  The article reads "B. F. Shively was born near Chambersburg, Penn., and relates how, when a boy, he helped the "skedaddlers"  hide the horses in the mountains when the southern forces invaded that country during the civil war. He was married in 1870 to Miss Ella Thomas and eight years later they moved to Kansas and located in Logan township. In 1900 they bought their present farm of 480 acres one half mile west of Zurich.

This farm is all in cultivation and pasture, fenced and cross fenced. The crops this year consist of 250 acres of wheat, 115 acres of corn, 27 acres of wheat, 10 acres of alfalfa, 22 acres millet, 15 acres kaffir corn. Mr. Shively has truly earned his bread by the sweat of his brow for he has worked in the harvest field fifty three harvests, beginning by carrying bundles when ten years old. This is the first harvest he has been on the retired list.

Among the best things in Rooks county is Mr. Shively's high bred live stock. Whatever he has he believes in keeping the best. He has 22 head of high grade Percheron horses, most of which he raised during the past seven years. He has refused $500 for a pair of five year olds. His geldings are valued at $250 each at the farm.

Two years ago he began to raise pure bred shorthorn cattle and now has twenty head of the registered Bates strain in reds and roans. Here we find the pure bred Duoc Jessey swine, the Rhode Island Red and he is now looking for a pure bred Scotch terrier. He is enthusiastic on having the best of everything and it pays.

James Buchanan Shively, M.D. Who Practiced In Cumberland And Chester County Pennsylvania

James Buchanan Shively was born in November 1856 and died on 2-December-1918 in Chester County, PA.  He was the son of Solomon Shively and his first wife, Rebecca Embick. James, also referred to as J. B. Shively in the records, was married 1st to Anna Lovella Hefflefinger on 6-February-1889.  Anna died in 1906. She was the daughter of David Hefflefinger and Eliza Baker.  James was married 2nd to Nellie Caldwell on 31-July-1907.  He was married a third time in 1917 to a Mrs. Kline. One known daughter, Helen E. Shively, was born in August 1892 to James Shively and Anna Hefflefinger.   She married George G. Gayman. Several printed records were located which give additional information on the life of James Buchanan Shively.

James Buchanan Shively, M.D.

J. B. Shively was born in Greene Township, the son of Solomon Shively.  He was educated in the common schools and read medicine with Dr. David Maclay in Greenvillage.  After attending the usual course of lectures he was graduated M. D. in 1887 from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa.

He practiced medicine in Greenvillage 1887 to 1896 in partnership with his preceptor and then removed to Shippensburg, Pa.  After about ten years practice in Shippensburg he located in West Chester, Pa., and followed the profession there until his death some years later.

His wife's family name was Hefflefinger.

Shively-Caldwell

The home of Rev. and Mrs. J. B. Paulsgrove, 122 North Hanover street, was the scene of a very pretty wedding on Wednesday morning when their friend, Miss Nellie G. Caldwell, of the Children's Home Society of Pittsburg, was married to Dr. James Bruce Shively, of Shippensburg.  The wedding took place at 7:30 o'clock.

Dr. and Mrs. Shively left on the 10.44 train on a wedding trip of six weeks to the Thousand Islands and parts of Canada.  Upon their return they will reside in Shippensburg, where the bridegroom is a prominent physician.

Dr. James B. Shively

After months of lingering illness, Dr. James B. Shively passed away early this morning at his home at the corner of Church and Chestnut streets.  Dr. Shively came to West Chester in the spring of 1911, from Shippensburg where for years he had been a successful physician, making a speciality of diseases of the eye.  Although omparatively a newcomer here he made many friends, being cordial and kindly disposition, always ready to render a service whenever possible and doing many kindly acts unknown to any but the persons who benefited by them.  Dr. Shively was about two years ago elected a deacon in the first Presbyterian Church and as long as health permitted was earnest in the discharge of the duties attached to that office.

He is survived by a widow, formerly, Mrs. Kline, of Abington, near Philadelphia, to whom he was married a year ago today.

He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Geo. C. Gayman of Doylestown.

SOLOMON SHIVELY, farmer, P. O. Green Village, was born April 16, 18180, on the old homestead in Greene Township, this county.  The family traces its ancestry to French Huguenots who left their native country from Switzerland, from which place the great-grandfather of our subject emigrated to America.  He was married and had a son born on the ocean, Jacob, the grandfather of our subject.  The great-grandfather settled in Lancaster County, Penn., where he died at a good old age.  He had another son, Henry, whose descendants are still living in Lancaster County.  Jacob was a carpenter and farmer, and lived many years near Shippensburg, where he owned a farm; later he moved to near the residence of his son, John, where he built a house, and where he and his wife died.  they had the following children:  Samuel, John, Jacob, Henry, Daniel, Barbara, Nancy, Elizabeth and another daughter, name unknown.  Of these, John, a farmer, was born in Lancaster County.  He married Hannah, daughter of Henry Rhodes.  She died at about sixty years of age, the mother of six children:  Nancy (deceased), Solomon, Eliza, John, Daniel, and Rebecca (deceased).  John Shively, Sr., came to Franklin County about 1806, where his father bought about 250 acres of land, of which our subject, Solomon, has 120 acres.  John Shively, Sr., was a man who took a deep interest in political matters and was a strong Democrat.  He and his wife were members of the United Brethren Church, and he held several township offices.   Solomon was educated in this township, and for the last five years has lived in Green Village.  He has been twice married; first to Rebecca, daughter of John Embick.  She died in December, 1879, aged sixty five years.  She bore her husband twelve children, seven of whom are living:  John, Hannah, Sarah, Harriet, James, Jacob and Frank. Of these James is reading medicine with Dr. Maclay, of Green Village.  Our subject married for his second wife, Mrs. Catharine Gontz, nee Embick, a sister of his first wife.  Mr. Shively in a member of the Lutheran Church.  Our subject's brother, John, read medicine with Dr. Richards and attended one course of lectures, but his health failed and he died in the Isle of St. Croix, West Indies.
