He was married on 15-Aug-1899 in Summit County, OH to Grace Lillian Grover. Grace was born on 15-Jan-1870 in Pennsylvania and died in 1923 in Jeannette, Westmoreland County, PA. Grace was the daughter of Harvey Grover and Susan Wise. George Wilbur Shively was the son of Andrew Jackson Shively born 1-Jul-1835 died 14-May-1916 in Jeannette, Westmoreland County, PA and Sarah Ackroyd Jones born 20-Feb-1837 in England died 5-Oct-1913 in Hudson, Summit County, OH. Andrew Jackson Shively was the son of Mr. Shively born in Germany and Mary Best also born in Germany.

The following was located in The Akron Beacon Journal, Akron, Ohio, Friday, April 28, 1899, Page 3, Column 2:

A farewell party was given Thursday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Wagoner in honor of George Shively. The latter will leave this city within a very short time to accompany Frank A. Wilcox to Erie, where he has accepted a position in the office of the new rubber company there.

Those who were present at the party, 16 in number, are the members of the Pedro club, to which Mr. Shively belonged. The evening was spent at the card tables, playing progressive pedro, after which Mr. Shively was taken by surprise in being presented with a fine gold watch charm, Thad W. Rice making the presentation speech. Lunch was served and the evening was very pleasantly passed.

A quiet wedding took place at the home of Mrs. Susa A. Grover, 430 East Center street, Tuesday evening, the contracting parties being George W. Shively, of Erie, Pa., and Miss Grace L. Grover, who has been engaged in teaching in the Akron public schools for several years.

Rev. T. E. Monroe, pastor of the First Congregational church, performed the ceremony promptly at 8 o’clock, using the double ring service. Will F. Neubauer was the groom’s attendant, while Miss Maude Grover, sister of the bride, was her maid of honor. Only the members of the two interested families were present at the ceremony. A wedding supper was served,

The young people left Tuesday night, for Erie, where a newly furnished home is prepared to receive them. Mr. Shively is engaged as an accountant with the Erie Rubber company, he having gone to that position from the India Rubber company’s office in this city, with F. A. Wilcox, last spring. He had lived in Akron for many years previous to that time, and has a large circle of friends here. The bride, as mentioned elsewhere, was one of the popular teachers in the local public schools.

Newton, of Cleveland, and Thad. W. Rice, of Castalia.

The newspaper obituary for George Shively was found in the Latrobe Bulletin, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, January 31, 1934, Page 5, Column 3:

George W. Shively

Suffering from poor health for several years, George. W. Shively, aged 64 years, of Jeannette, secretary of the Pennsylvania Rubber Company, passed away,, yesterday.

Mr. Shively had been secretary of the rubber company for 27 years.

He was the first president of the Jeannette Chamber of Commerce, and third president of the Jeannette Kiwanis Club. He was also one of the organizers of the Jeannette War Service Union, was Red Cross representative for a number of years and was chairman of the Jeannette Playgrounds committee. He was also a charter member of the Masonic Lodge, No. 750, F. and A.M.  He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent. He is survived by two sisters.

JEANETTE, Pa., Jan. 31 — (INS) - George W. Shively, 64, and executive of the Pennsylvania Rubber Company since its inception in 1899 and for 27 years its secretary, was dead here today. He was an active member of several clubs and lodges. His wife died in 1923. Surviving are two sisters.

John Sell Schiveley was born on 29-Jan-1844 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA and died 1-Mar-1922 in Abilene, Dickinson County, KS. He was married 1st to Sarah E. Clark. Sarah was born ca. 1844 and died on 22-May-1882  and buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Westmoreland County, PA. John Schiveley was married 2nd to Mary A. Green on 8-Dec-1886 in Dickinson County, KS. In Jul-1909 Mary A. Schiveley filed suit for divorce against her husband, J. S. Schiveley, on the ground of gross neglect and cruelty.  In 1911 John Schiveley married a 3rd time in Emporia, Lyon County, KS to Mrs. H. A. Myers of San Francisco.

Schiveley age 37 a shoemaker, wife Sarah age 36, daughter Minnie age 10, son Charles age 4, and mother-in-law Eliza Clark age 57. On the 1900 Abilene City, Dickinson County, KS is the family of John S. Schivley born 1845 age 55 married 13 years, wife Mary A. born Dec-1846 age 53, son Charley C. born 1876 age 24 and son Herbert G. born 1889 age 10. On the 1920 Abilene City, Dickinson County, KS are John S. Schively age 75, wife Hallie age 54, stepson Ed Hanlan age 17, and roomer Arthur G. Vongruenigen age 25.

Old Salesman Died At Home Here Early This Morning

J. S. Schiveley, age 78, died at his home, 411 North Spruce at two o'clock this morning after several weeks illness. John Schiveley has been a salesman for the Berlau Paper Company for years, having been on the road for the past 25 years. As a citizen of the town he will be greatly missed and his service to his Company will indeed be a great loss. He leaves his wife, Hallie A. Schiveley, one daughter, Mrs. M. Enoch of California and three sons, Herbert of Kansas City, Charles and Hanlan.

Wedding Bells

The marriage of Mr. J. S. Shively and Miss Mary A. Green took place at eight o'clock last night, at the Baptist church. The invited friends of the happy couple, who assembled to witness their taking of the marriage vow, completely filled the church. As Mendelssohn's wedding march was being played, the bride and groom, preceded by the ushers, Mr. George Gabaugh and Mr. S. C. Walker, and the officiating clergymen, Rev. Dr. Welcher and Rev. T. F. Stauffer, proceeded up the aisle of the church, pausing in front of the alter, neatly decorated with flowers where a very impressive marriage ceremony was pronounced by Rev. Dr. Welcher assisted by Rev. T. F. Stauffer.

After the conclusion of the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Schively proceeded to the residence of Rev. T. F. Stauffer, brother-in-law of the groom, where they received congratulations and presents from a large number of friends. The GAZETTE also extends congratulations.

Marriage A Surprise - J. S. Schiveley Was Married At Emporia

When J. S. Shiveley returned to Abilene a couple of days ago no one even suspected that he had been married a short time ago. This is the story:

Mrs. H. A. Myers of San Francisco and Mr. Schiveley were married at Emporia by the Rev. T. H. Stauffer, father-in-law of the bride, and they spent their honeymoon in Wichita. From there the groom came to Abilene last Wednesday to prepare his house for the home-coming of his bridge which was last night.

Mr. Schiveley is a very successful traveling salesman who has his headquarters at this city. The bride formerly resided in San Francisco. Miss Florence Hoon of Emporia, niece of Mr. Schiveley, accompanied the bride here last night and will visit a while.  

Mr. and Mrs. Schiveley will reside at the groom's former residence at 411 North Spruce street.

A descendant of the Samuel Shively (Shiebler, Scheibler) line who was from Westmoreland County, PA requested information regarding the lineage of the Shively and Henry lines. Articles related to this family were written for the Shively blog on 1-Apr-2012, 17-May-2014 and 13-Aug-2017.

Samuel Shively was born on 11-Oct-1842 in PA and died 9-Jul-1909 in Westmoreland County, PA.  His parents were Jacob Scheibeler, Jr (born 18-May-1816 died 8-Mar-1885 in Westmoreland County, PA) and Veronica Fannie (Fanny) Kepple (born 6-Dec-1815 died 14-Jul-1885 in Westmoreland County, PA). The parents of Jacob Scheibler, Jr were Jacob Scheibeler, Sr (born 4-Jun-1788 died 7-Oct-1861 in Westmoreland County, PA) and Catherine Troxel (Truxel) who was born 20-Nov-1781 died 4-Mary-1841. Samuel Shively (Shiebler, Scheibler, Scheibeler, Shibley) married twice.  Both wives were sisters. The first wife was Susannah Henry and the second wife was Mary Henry. They were the daughters of Frederick Henry III and Lydia Ann (last name not known for sure as records vary regarding her last name).   Frederick Henry III was born 1816 and died 1898. From the Find A Grave web site is the following: “the father of Frederick Henry III was Frederick Henry II. Frederick Henry II survived the Indian attack in 1779 called “The Henry massacre” in which his mother and 3 children were murdered at home. Infant sister, Margaret Elizabeth Henry was murdered along the way after capture. Two other children were captured and rescued. From various accounts Fred Henry II got away from the cabin and sought help”.

   Frederick Henry II was born 1773 in PA and died 1865 in PA.  Wife was Margaret born 1794 in PA

   The father of Frederick Henry II was Frederick Henry I who was born 1748 in Germany and died 1820 in Hempfield, Mercer County, PA. The wife of Frederick Henry I was Catherine Frantz for 5-Sep-1751 in Bourges, France. She was murdered in 1779 in the “Henry massacre” in Westmoreland, PA.

Item, I give and bequeath to my son George F Scheibaler fifteen hundred dollars which amount I have already advanced to him out of the payment of the Tract of land I sold to him which he now occupies. Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary intermarried to Henry E Snyder the Tract of land they now occupy called the Kepple Tract containing seventy five acres and and 128 (   ) and she the said Mary to have fifteen hundred dollars in said Tract of land as her legacy and pay out to my daughter Elizabeth intermarried to Michael Snyder fifteen hundred dollars as her legacy in said Tract of land and at my death pay to my (  ) seven hundred and fifty dollars being in full payment for said Tract of land. Samuel Shively (Sheibler) And Wives, Susannah Henry And Mary Henry, From Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania

The subjects of the blog article written on May 17, 2014 were Samuel Shively (Shiebler) and his first wife Susannah Henry and second wife Mary Henry.  This week an ancestor of these families requested information on the Shively history.   

In the information written in 2014 mention was made of a newspaper article from The Democratic Press in Ravenna, Portage County, Ohio that Samuel evidently attempted to practice bigamy by being married to the both Henry sisters.   Samuel Shively was born 11-Oct-1842 in Pennsylvania, a son of Jacob Shively and (unknown) Kepple. Samuel died in Westmoreland County, PA on 9-Jul-1909. He was buried in Hillside Cemetery. His stone lists Samuel Shiebler 1842-1909, Co F 103 Pa Inf. and wife, Mary M (1852-1924).  He was first married to Susannah Henry a daughter of Frederick Henry III and Lydia Ann Gross.  Samuel and Susannah had at least three children:  William born 1868, Mary Jane born 1869, and Charles born 1874.  On 21-Apr-1874 in Montgomery County, OH Samuel married Mary Henry, sister of Susannah Henry.  Zachariah Taylor Henry who was a brother to Susannah and Mary reported the marriage of Samuel and Mary to authorities who arrested Samuel on charges of bigamy.  Samuel Shively and Mary Henry went on to have at least the following children:  Harry born 1875, John born 1879, Anna born 1880, Howard born 1882, Edward born 1884, Laura born 1886 and Lawrence born 1891.  After the separation from Samuel Shively on 3-Jul-1893 Susannah Henry Shively married a second time to Mark L. Campbell. 

Susannah "Susan" Henry was born 25-May-1846 and died 3-Jul-1914 in Westmoreland Co., PA.  Mary Henry was born 15-Sep-1852 and died 2-Apr-1924 in Westmoreland Co., PA.

An attempt was made to find additional information on the children of Samuel Shively. Following is some of the information found for this article:

Children of Samuel Shively and Susannah Henry

1. William E. Shively was born on 21-Aug-1867 and died 4-Dec-1961 in Turtle Creek, Allegheny County, PA.  He was married on 30-May-1901 to Katherine Ness Wishart. Katherine was a daughter of John Wishart and Katherine Hodge and was born in Scotland on 25-Jun-1870 and died in Allegheny County, PA on 15-Mar-1948. On census records William was listed as a farmer and then on the 1930 census he was a janitor at a school.

2. Mary Jane Shively was married to William Shuey on 8-Mar-1887. She was born 28-Apr-1869 and died 30-Jun-1962.

3. Charles Fredrick Shively was born 6-Apr-1873 in Westmoreland Co., PA and died 16-Jul-1946 in Pittsburg, Allegheny Co., PA  He was married to Mary Hudson on 15-Sep-1896. She was a daughter of William Hudson and was born 7-Sep-1870 and died 24-Jan-1937 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. In 1910 Charles and Mary were living in Chicago, IL and he was a lamp trimmer for the gas company.  By 1930 they had moved to Allegheny Co., PA and he was a salesman for household supplies.

Children of Samuel Shively and Mary Henry

1. Harry L. Shively was born 1-Jan-1875 or 1876 and died 3-Nov-1963 in Westmoreland Co., PA.  He was married to Lucetta Baughman who was a daughter of James Baughman and Rose Oplinger.  She died in 1958 in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland Co., PA. On the 1910 census Harry was listed as a coal miner.

 2.John Frederick Shively was born 21-Apr-1878 in Greensburg, PA and died 24-Dec-1953 in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland Co., PA.  He was married to Lilly M Fox on 4-Sep-1906.  She was a daughter of James Fox and Alice Kenner and was born 7-Oct-1890 and died 29-Nov-1929.  On the 1910 census John was listed as a clerk in a grocery store and in 1920 was a track walker for the railroad.

3. Anna Shively born ca 1880

4. Howard Walter Shively was born 21-Dec-1882 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., PA and died 17-Dec-1963 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., PA.  He was married to Agnes M. Willard on 5-May-1904.  On the 1920 census Howard is a clerk in a grocery store and in 1930 he is a salesman for National Biscuit Company.  Howard Walter Shively and Agnes M. Willard had at least two children, a daughter Leona A. Shively and a son Kenneth Howard Shively who was born on 4-Sep-1910 and later married Gertrude.

5. Edward Cline Shively was born 28-Mar-1885 in Jeannette, Westmoreland Co., PA and died 14-Oct-1953 in South Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., PA.  He was first married to Margaret Sara Walker daughter of George Walker and Mary Smith.  Margaret was born on 15-Jan-1881 and died 15-Nov-1929.  He may have married a second time to Mary.  Edward was a motorman for the street railway or street car.

6. Laura Edna Shively born ca. 1886.  She may have married several times.  In Fayette Co., PA is a marriage for Laura Shively to Elijah Dean on 28-Oct-1915.  At some point Laura Shively was married to James Willard.  James Willard died on 3-Mar-1929 from a fractured spine and ribs after a bucket fell from a crane onto him.  There is a marriage for Laura Edna Willard and Walter Clair Kuhns for 5-Apr-1933. It is not understood why but she is still listed as Laura Willard on the 1940 Westmoreland County census records.

7. Lawrence Shively born ca 1891

John R. Shively And James C. Shively

James Clifford Shively And John R. Shively were grandsons of John L. Shively and Vadia (Nevada) Hodge.  John L. Shively and Nevada Hodge were the subjects of last weeks blog.  James Clifford Shively and John R. Shively were the sons of John L. Shively and Laura B. Newingham.  James was born 29-Apr-1924 and died 12-Mar-2003. James C. Shively was married 8-Aug-1945 to Constance I. King.  She was born 13-Dec-1926. He was married second to Esther Dorothy Calhoun on 28-Feb-1949. John R. Shively was born ca. 1930. 

The following newspaper article was found in The Daily Courier, Connellsville, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, March 21, 1951, Page 1, Column 2:

Meet In Korea

Scottdale brothers, Sergeant James C. Shively (right) with the Service Company of the 27^th Infantry Division and Private First Class John R. Shively, with a transportation battalion, met for the first time in two years recently.  The reunion took place in Taegu, Korea, on February 25.

Sergeant Shively is now serving with the famed Wolfhead Regiment, which was then in Suwon, Korea.  It is one of the first United States units to enter the Korean War from Japan.  Private First Class Shively is one of the many reserves called to active duty as a result of the action in Korea.  He returned to service on September 30, 1950, and arrived in Korea on December 24 of that year.  The transportation battalion is sponsored by the Reading Railroad of Reading, and is stationed at Sindong, Korea.  It is one of the main links supplying equipment to all front line troops.

Sergeant Shively is one of the many Regular Army men whose voluntary enlistments were extended by the Government to meet the crisis in Korea.

Westmoreland County Youths Enlist In Army

Several Westmoreland county youths have been enlisted in the Regular Army, according to M/-Sgt. John T. Bilpuch, in charge of the Greensburg recruiting district.

James C. Shively, husband of Mrs. Constance B. Shively and son of Mrs. Laura B. Shively of 716 West Pittsburg street, Scottdale, reenlisted for three years, selecting the European command for his service.  He has a total of three years and eight months in the Army, his last tenure being with the 71^st Infantry 44^th Division.

GREENSBURG, Oct 3. – Laura Shively of Scottdale has filed a divorce libel here against John L. Shively, charging desertion.

Mother Of 4 Fails In Attempt On Own Life

Connellsville Woman In Hopital; Drank Bottle Of Turpentine

Mrs. Laura Shively, 33, of Snydertown, north of Connellsville, the mother of four children, was in a serious condition today in the Connellsville State hospital as a result of an attempted suicide in her home Saturday night by drinking turpentine.

According to County Detective John C. Wall and Police Chief Andrew Thomas of Connellsville who conducted an immediate investigation, the woman was suffering head injuries and a swollen face.

Domestic troubles, officers said, were the cause of the suicide attempt.  County Detective Wall reported that Mrs. Shively drank the contents of a small bottle of turpentine in the pantry of her home at 6 o’clock Saturday evening while the family was preparing for the evening meal.

An investigation is being conducted to determine to source of the head injuries, officers said.

Rushed To Hospital

Nothing was known of the suicide attempt until 10 o’clock Saturday when the woman fainted.  On recovering she revealed the fact to her husband, John Shively, Connellsville automobile salesman, who rushed her to the hospital.

Regaining consciousness in the Connellsville hospital, the woman told Chief Thomas that her husband had been “running around with another woman” and that she had asked him not to do it, declaring that she could not live without him.

Hospital authorities reported her condition as “fairly good” while Dr. E. F. Harris, attending physician would not make a statement due to the internal action of the poison.

Mrs. Shively is the mother of four children, James, 13; William, 11; Jack, 8 and David, 4.
