Paul Shively in the picture to the left is the son of Robert Charles Shively. Robert Charles Shively was born 23-Aug-1895 and died 3-Dec-1968 in Taylor County, KY. He was the son of William S. Shively (1863-1957) and Emma Rebecca Bowles (1861-1928). William S. Shively was the son of William Jacob Shively (1825-1913) and Esther A Newcomb (1833-1910). William Jacob Shively was a son of Jacob Shively (1772-1851) and Sophia Davis (1779-1850). Jacob Shively was the son of Michael Shively. 

Robert Charles Shively married in 1930 to Nannie T. Harden Rouse. Nannie T. Harden was born 1-May-1898 and died 20-Mar-1948 in Taylor County, KY.  She married 1st in 1919 to Henry William Rouse (1899-1922). Nannie and Henry Rouse had at least two children -h Fred and Henry Rouse. Robert and Nannie Shively had the following children: Annie E. Shively (1930-2015), Robert Harden Shively (1932-1962), Charles Jr. (1935-1977), Leroy Shively (1937-1991), William Jackson Shively (1942-1942) and Paul Shively.

Died At Indianapolis

Henry Rouse, of this city, who, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Rouse, left last week for Dallas, Tex., for the benefit of his health, died yesterday at Indianapolis, word today stated. The body will be taken to Campbellsville, Ky., for burial. The widow, parents and two children survive. The decedent had suffered with tuberculosis for eight years.

Fred Rouse Dies Sunday At Hospital

Fred L. Rouse, 49, Rout 1, died Sunday at Bartholomew county hospital. He was a former employee of Cummins Engine company, retiring in 1965 due to ill health.

Mr. Rouse was born in Taylor county, Ky., the son of Henry and Nannie Harden Rouse. He married Mrs. Pauline Kinney on June 26, 1952. She survives. He was a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist church.

Other survivors include three sons, Carl Rouse of Charlestown and Morris and Mark Rouse, both at home; a stepson, Thomas Kinney of 1104 Eighteenth street; two daughters, Mrs. Dwayne Burton and Mrs. Richard Allman, both of Edinburg; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Larry Krebbs of 729 Chestnut street; a brother, Henry Rouse of Freetown; three half brothers, Paul Shively of Nashville, Leroy Shively of Route 9 and Charles Shively of Campbellsville, Ky.; a half sister, Mrs. Emma Taylor of Campbellsville; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Henry Rouse, and two half brothers, Robert and William Shively.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver funeral home by the Rev. Kenneth Kritzer. Persons my call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and until time of services Wednesday.  Burial will be at Garland Brook cemetery.

Henry Turner Rouse Freetown

BROWNSTOWN -- Henry Turner Rouse, 78, of Freetown died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Rouse drove a bus at Camp Atterbury during World War II, worked at Cummins Engine Co., for 18 years and also drove a truck for Rumph's Marathon, Hukill Oil Co. and Cosco.

He was a member of Mount Nebo United Church in Brown County.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m Thursday at Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home with the Rev. David Ison officiating. Calling will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from noon until service time Thursday. Burial will be at Freetown Cemetery.

Memorial may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association or the donor's choice of charities.

Mr. Rouse was born in Taylor County, Ky., July 5, 1922, the son of Henry William and Nanny Turner Hardin Rouse. He was the stepson of Robert Shively. He married Elma Ople Tedder Sept. 13, 1941, in Adair County, Ky. She died May 14, 1997. 

Surviving are children, Marvin and Melvin Rouse, both of Yavapai County, Ariz., Maurice "David" Rouse of Spraytown, Michial Rouse of Freetown, Margarett Moussa of Houston and Marcella Hopkins of Seymour; grandchildren, Timothy Rouse and Sherri Jones, both of Somerset, Ky., Chris and Jenny Rouse, both of Indianapolis, Mostafa Moussao of Houston, Marc Hopkins of Seymour, D. J. Rouse of Spraytown, Zebulon, Carmeleta and Sabrina Rouse, all of Freetown, Michelle Davers of North Vernon and Donna Garvey of Medora; a half sister, Emma Hourigan of Campbellsville, Ky.; a half brother, Paul Shively of Campbellsville; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sons, Kenneth and Dean Rouse; a grandson, Daryl Henry Rouse; a brother, Fred Rouse; half brothers, Robert, Charles and Leroy Shively; and a great-grandson.

Leroy Shively

Former resident Leroy Shively, 53, of Columbus, died Friday, July 12, 1991, at the emergency room of Bartholomew County Hospital.

A Reliance Electric Company worker, he was a member of the Baptist Church in Kentucky.

Mr. Shively was born in Campbellsville, Kentucky, the son of Robert and Nannie Harden Shively. He married Sylvia Pelston October 13, 1967. She survives.

Other survivors include sons, Jeff Shively of Campbellsville and Steve Shively, stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army; daughters, Debbie Turner of Tennessee and Patricia Lowe of Columbus; a brother Paul Shively of Campbellsville, a half-brother, Henry Rouse of Freetown; a sister, Emma Harrigan of Campbellsville and eight grandchildren.

Services were Monday at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus with the Reverend Orville Turner officiating. Burial was in Garland Brook Cemetery.

William S. Shively And Wife, Esther Estella "Stella" Rambo, Who Lived In Luzerne County, Pennsylvania

William S. Shively was born on 7-Sep-1867 and died 24-Sep-1930 in Wilkes Barre, Luzerne County, PA.  William was married in Luzerne County on 22-Dec-1887 to Esther Estella "Stella" Rambo.  Stella was born in Apr-1870 and died 8-Mar-1941 In Lucerne County.  William and Estella are listed on the 1900 Providence County, Rhode Island census.  In the household are William age 37 born Sep 1872, wife Estella age 30 born Apr 1870, daughter Pearl age 10 born Aug 1889, son Arthur age 9 born Aug 1890, son Marvin age 5 born Aug 1894 and boarders who were twins Edward and Elmer Nelson age 21 born Jan 1879. Listed on the 1920 Lucerne County, PA, 28 Parsons Court, Wilkes Barre is the household of William S Shively age 57, wife Stella E age 49, son Arthur V age 38, son Marvin Elton age 25, daughter Ruth K age 18, and daughter Dorothy E age 16.  Daughter, Pearl Shively, was born 9-Aug-1889 and died 13-Oct-1914. A daughter, Beatrice, was born ca 1907and died in Lucerne County on 7-Sep-1908.

Marvin Shively, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Shively, 28 Parsons Court, this city, member of Battery D, 109th Field Art., formerly the 3d Pa. Field Art., stationed at Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga., has been promoted to corporal.  

Marvin E. Shively and Elizabeth T. Weir were married on 30-October-1920.

The lineage of the William Shively family appears with the name of Daniel Shively on the 1830 and 1840 Huntingdon County, PA records. The 1850 Huntingdon County census is the first census that lists names of the Shively family and children. On this census is Daniel Shively born ca. 1798, wife Mary born ca. 1804, Samuel Shively born ca. 1834, Mary born ca. 1837, Minerva born ca. 1838 and John W. born ca. 1844. Blair County, PA census records beginning in 1870.  Listed on the census is the household of S.W. Shively age 35, wife L.A. age 32, son M.C. age 11, son G.L. age 9, son W. C. age 6, daughter G.M. age 4, daughter E.M. age 3, son O.P. age 1, father Daniel age 72, and mother in law Elizabeth Sayler age 72.  From research it is believed the initials stand for Samuel  W Shively, wife Elizabeth "Lizzie" A age 32, son Maurice Charles age 11, son George L age 9, son William S age 6, daughter Grace M age 4, daughter Elizabeth Mary age 3, son Oliver Perry age 1.     By 1880 Samuel may have died because "Sarah" Shively is listed as the head of household on the 1880 Newport, Perry County, PA census.  In the household are Sarah Shively age 42, son Charles age 21, son George age 19, son William age 16, daughter Elizabeth age 12, son Perry age 10, daughter Katie age 9, and mother Elizabeth Saylor age 83.

The PA death records for the mother of William S Shively, Elizabeth A Saylor,  list her birth date as 20-Oct-1839, daughter of Samuel Saylor, and her date of death as 21-Feb-1911. She was buried in Newport Cemetery, Perry County, PA. A newspaper obituary for Elizabeth Saylor Shively was found but when comparing with other records seems to be full of errors. The following was extracted from The Wilkes-Barre Record, Wednesday, February 22, 1911, Page 5, Column 4:

Death Of Aged Woman

Yesterday morning at 4 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. Eliza Shively, aged 72, at the home of her son, W. L. Shively, No. 617 South Main street.  Complications was the cause of death.  Deceased was a well known resident of South Wilkes-Barre and had a host of friends.  She is survived by five children:  W. L. Shively of this city, E. L. and T. O. Shively of Johnstown, Mrs. Grace Leekens of Altoona and Mrs. H. S. Fisher of Newport, Perry County.

Funeral services were conducted at the home last evening at 7:30 o'clock by Rev. A. J. Brunner.  The remains will be taken to Newport this morning at 7:45 o'clock, via the Jersey Central Railroad.  Burial will be made at that place.

Erasmus Shively Who Lived In Hancock County, Ohio

Erasmus Shively was the son of Henry Shively and Mary Ann Chambers.  He was born 26-Mar-1844, died 15-Feb-1890 in Hancock County, Ohio, buried Krout Cemetery. Erasmus was married 1st to Mary J. Sillick on 7-Feb-1867 in Hancock County, OH.  She was born 8-Dec-1844 in Adams County, PA, died 19-Jul-1877 in Hancock County, OH, buried Krout Cemetery. Erasmus married 2nd Harriet Elizabeth Struble on 21-Sep-1878 in Hancock County, OH.  She was born 14-Mar-1859, died 15-Jun-1929 in Morrow County, OH, buried Houcktown Cemetery.  Harriet Elizabeth Stuble Shively married Robert Davis Launder after the death of Erasmus Shively.

     Justin Crawfis, Genealogy Associate, Findlay-Hancock  County Public Library, Findlay, OH extracted the newspaper obituary for Erasmus Shively.  The article was found in the Findlay Weekly Jeffersonian, Thursday, February 20, 1890, Page 8:

SHIVELY--At his home near Houcktown, on Sunday, February 16th, after a short illness E. M. Shively, familiarly known in his own neighborhood as Doc Shively. His age was 45 years. The funeral services was held Tuesday.

Sillick included:  William S born Jan-1868, died 21-Oct-1931 in Morrow Co, OH and Eva Florence born 1872, married 19-Jul-1891 in Hancock Co to Charles M. Sampson.  Children born to Erasmus Shively and 2nd wife Harriet Elizabeth Struble included: unknown child died 2-Aug-1879 at 4 days old; Claude Pitt born 16-Dec-1880, married 3-Aug-1910 in Allen, OH to Elizabeth May Wiper, died 24-Aug-1956 in Washington County, OH; Forest C born 14-Sep-1882, died 10-Jan-1907, buried Krout Cem.; Milton C born 26-Jun-1884; Bernice R. born 26 or 28-June-1886, married 11-Aug-1917 in Hancock Co., OH to Charles E Miller; and Kitt M. born 2-Sep-1888, married 20-Nov-1915 in Hancock Co., OH to Parley O. Cartwright, died 18-Jan-1925.  

      Julie Mayle, Rutherford B. Hayes Presidental Center, Spiegel Grove, Fremont, OH extracted the newspaper obituary for Kitt M. Shively Cartwright.  The article was found in the Sandusky Register, January 20, 1925, Page 2, Column 2:

Mrs. Kitt M. Cartwright, widow of Parley C. Cartwright,, died at the family residence, 215 Shelby st at 6:10 o'clock Sunday morning, aged 36 years, four months and 16 days.  She had been ill for four and a half years.

Surviving her are her husband, and one daughter, Vivian, of this city; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Launders of Findlay; two brothers, Claude Shively of Marietta, and William Shively of Grafton, Ill; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Miller of Edison, O., and Mrs. Charles Sampson of Findlay and many other relatives and friends.

She was a member of the First Christian church of this city and of the W.B.A. Maccabees of Findlay.  She was formerly a resident of Findlay where she was well and favorably known.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at the residence here, the Rev. J. A. Griffith officiating.  The body will then be taken to Findlay where services will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Launders, the Rev. W. W. Windbigler officiating. Interment will be made in Houcktown cemetery.
