Elias Shively was the son of Daniel Shively born 28-Jan-1905 in Northumberland Co., PA died 11-Oct-1871 and buried in Laurelton Lutheran Cemetery in Union Co., PA and wife, Elizabeth Keister.  Daniel was the son of John Shively born 5-Feb-1776 in West Buffalo Township, Northumberland Co., PA died 7-Dec-1862 in Hartley Township, Union Co., PA and buried in Lewis Cemetery, Union Co., PA and wife, Elisabeth Dersham.  John was the son of Christian Shively III born 2-Feb-1751 in Warwick Township, Lancaster Co., PA. died 12-Dec-1842 Union Co., PA and wife, Sophia Catharina Von Groate Schmidt.  Christian Shively III was the son of Christen Schaeublin who was christened 25-Dec-1718 in Oberdorf, Basel, Switzerland died after 16-Nov-1773 in York Township, York Co., PA and wife, Esther Neff.  Christen Schaeublin was the son of Christian Schaeublin who was born 6-Nov-1683 Oberdorf, Basel, Switzerland died before 18-Apr-1752 and wife, Barbara Spittler.  Christian Schaeublin was the son of Durs Schaeublin who was born about 1650 in Oberdorf, Basel, Switzerland died after 19-Jan-1690 and wife, Margaret Straumann.

Merlin Francis Shively was married 1st to Mary Violenta Spigelmyer. She was born on 31-Jul-1889 and died on 25-Dec-1933. She was the daughter of Levi Jonathan Spigelmyer and Elvina Krader.  Merlin married 2nd on 4-Oct-1936 to Bertha Mary Rote. Bertha had married 1st Andrew James Hironimus (1880-1931). Bertha was born on 7-Dec-1883 and died 14-Apr-1949. She was the daughter of Simon Rote and Jennie Ulrich.  Merlin married 3rd on 7-Jul-1951 to Mary Ann Immel. She was married 1st to David Sylvester Noll.  Mary was born on 8-Jun-1889 and died 2-Feb-1963.  She was the daughter of James Immel and Harriet Snavely.

Shively age 49 and wife Bertha M. age 56.

Merlin Francis Shively

Merlin Francis Shively of Coburn, died in Brush Mountain-Gregg Township, Monday at 8:30 a.m. of a heart attack while out picking blueberries. He was 63.

Born in Union County, June 11, 1890, he was the son of William and Anna Gramley Shively. He was first married to Mary Spigelmeyer, who preceded him in death. On July 7, 1951 he was married to Mary Ann Immel who survives with two children to his first wife, Mrs. Irene Vance and Nolan Shively, both of Coburn.

Also surviving are two brothers, Edward C. Shively, Selinsgrove and Harry E. Shively, Harrisburg, one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Boop, Glen Iron, and four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was a member of the Coburn Evangelical United Brethren Church from which funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Paul F. Kieffel officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview cemetery, Millheim. Friends will be received at the Neff Funeral Home, Millheim, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.3

Mrs. Bertha M. Shively

Mrs. Bertha Mary Shively, 65, died at her home in Coburn yesterday at 7:50 a.m.

Mrs. Shively was born in Penn Township Dec. 7, 1883, a daughter of Simon and Jennie Ulrich Rote. Her mother survives.

Her first husband, A. J. Hironimus, preceded her in death. Her second husband, Merlin Shively, who she married Oct. 4, 1936 survives.

Children by her first marriage are Mrs. Grace E. Hettinger, Milton, and Mrs. Nomie R. Shimmel, Lewisburg RD. She leaves 13 grandchildren.

Step-children are Mrs. Irene E. Wance, Coburn, and Nolan L. Shively, Coburn.

Three brothers, Ammon Rote, Spring Mills RD, Thomas and Lester Rote of Spring Mills RD and a sister, Mrs. Stella Pressler, Aaronsburg also survive.

She was a member of the Coburn Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Ladies Aid of Coburn.

Funeral services will be held at the Coburn Evangelical United Brethren Church Monday at 2 p,m, with Rev. A. C. Paulhamus and Rev. H. P. Maneval officiating. Burial will be made in the Fairview Cemetery at Millheim. Friends may call at the Neff Funeral Home in Millheim Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mary Noll Shively

Mrs. Mary Noll Shively of Millheim died at the home of her son, Dean A. Noll, of Millheim RD 1, Saturday at 6:15 p.m.

Born in Gregg Township, June 8, 1889, she was the daughter of James and Harriet Snavely Immel. She was first married to David S. Noll, and later to Merlin F. Shively, who died in 1953.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Holt, and one son, Dean, both of Millheim RD.

Surviving brothers and sisters are Mrs. Elizabeth Ripka of Coatesville; Mrs. Mabel Rachau, Bellefonte RD; Mrs. Esther Gill, Milroy; and Paul Immel, Washington, D.C. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren.

She attended the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Coburn and was a member of P.O. of A. Lodge, 293 of Spring Mills and the Rebekah Lodge of Millheim.

Funeral services will be held at the Neff Funeral Home Wednesday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Andrew H. Beahm officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Millheim. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Henry Franklin Shively was born on 5-Nov-1859 in Henry County, IN and died 30-Apr-1930 in Henry County, IN.  He was married to Margaret Ella Culbertson on 20-Sep-1883 in Henry County, IN.  Margaret was the daughter of James S. Culbertson and Martha Jane Jessup. Margaret Ella Culbertson was born in Apr-1864 in Howard County, IN and died on 25-Mar-1916 in Henry County, IN.  Henry Franklin Shively was the son of John Shively (born 28-Jan-1827 in Monongalia County, WV and died 14-Sep-1914 in Henry County, IN) and Mary Artha Lingley Phillips (1829-1907).  John Shively was the son of Philip Shively (born 10-May-1790 in Monongalia County, WV and died 26-Oct-1872 in Henry County, IN) and Margaret Tribbet (1800-1876).

NEWCASTLE, Ind., April 28.--Henry Franklin Shiveley, age 70, well known farmer, living east of Mount Summit, passed away at his home, Monday morning, at 9:30 o'clock, following 13 years of sickness. The deceased had been an invalid for years, following a stroke of paralysis.

He was a life long resident of the county, and was born near Mount Summit, the son of John and Mary Shiveley.

Surviving are the sons, James D., Harry C., Fred, Jesse and Hubert: three daughters, Lena Test and Martha West, of Spiceland, and Mary Shiveley, a nurse, at South Bend; and three brothers, Philip, Salem and Luther.

The following was located in the Columbus Dispatch, Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday, January 5, 1927, Page 6, Columns 5-6:

SHIVELY – John, aged 64, former resident of Columbus. The remains of Mr. Shively, who died at the home of his son, Joseph Shively, in Huntington, W. Va., Tuesday night, will be received in Columbus in charge of the Egan Undertaking company, 30 West Naghton street, Thursday night, and will be taken to their funeral home. Funeral services will be held there Friday,  at 9 a.m., after which interment will be made in St. Joseph’s cemetery, besides the grave of his wife. Mr. Shively had been making his home with his son, Joseph. Other surviving relatives include three daughters, Mrs. W. J. Schoenfeldt of Canton, Ohio; Mrs. Neil Gainer of 731 Franklin avenue and Mrs. Victor Williamson, also of the Franklin avenue address.

CATLETTSBURG, KY:  John Shively, 60, died at his home here after a lingering illness. He operated the Shively Hotel here for many years.

SHIVELY -- Mrs. Clara, age 64, wife of John Shively of 57 South Monroe avenue, died in the Clinic hospital, Cleveland, Wednesday night.  She submitted to an operation there, last Tuesday, for goiter.  Mrs. Shively leaves besides her husband three daughters, Mrs. Irene Schoenfelt of Canton, Mrs. Nelle Gainer and Miss Lucille Shively of Columbus; four sisters Mrs. Kate Brown of Logan and Mrs. Jospeh Engler, Mrs. Edward Rand( ) and Mrs. John Smetz of Columbus and six brothers (   ) of Logan and Charles, Sam and Leo, Louis and John Kienle of Columbus. The body was brought to Columbus, Thursday and removed to the home.

 

Henry Shively And Mary (Mamie) Ellen Cudhea In Ohio And Fulton County, Indiana

Henry Shively was born on 16-Sep-1857 in Grand Rapids, Wood County, OH and died on 11-May-1943 in Rochester, Fulton County, IN. He was the son of Albert Shively (died 1879 in Clay County, TX) and Catherine Harris (born 17-Nov-1829 died 10-Oct-1927 in Hutchinson County, TX). Henry was married to Mary (Mamie) Ellen Cudhea on 24-Jun-1885 in Paulding County, OH.  She was the daughter of John Cuddaho (1833-1864) and Honora A. Fighney (1834-1920). 

Listed on the 1900 Defiance Township, Defiance County, OH census is the family of Henry Shively born Sep-1857 age 42, wife Mamie born Sep-1863 age 36, daughter Nora born Apr-1887 age 13, daughter Grace born Feb-1891 age 9, mother in law Nora Cudhea age 65, niece Blanch Columbia born Jun-1888 age 11 and niece Catherine Columbia born May-1894 age 6. On the 1910 Dayton Township, Dayton City, Montgomery County, OH census are Henry J. Shively age 49, wife Mamie E. age 43, and daughter Grace T. age 19. On the 1940 Rochester, Fulton County, IN census is the household of Henry Shively age 82 widowed, cousin Ralph Devault age 25, cousin Vivian Devault age 26 and cousin John Devault age 2.

From the census records above it is known Henry and Mamie Shively had daughters Nora and Grace Shively.  The following newspaper article named a third daughter, Eursel Shively.  Located in the Defiance Express, Friday, October 23, 1896, Page 6, Column 1:

Eursel Shively, daughter of Henry and Mamie Shively, died at their home 203 Main street, Monday, at 11:30 a.m., aged 1 year, 1 month and 21 days. Funeral from English Catholic church at 8 o'clock Wednesday. The remains will be interred at Junction.

Change In The Police Force

The resignation of Henry Shively of the Defiance police force has been accepted by Mayor Evans and Gust Matthews will be appointed by Mayor Evans to fill the vacancy, subject to the confirmation of the city council.

Policeman Shively made a faithful officer and retires with the good will of the city officials.

Has Closed Up Auction Store

Henry Shively, who for the past year has conducted an auction store on Clinton street near Fourth, will close the place for good Saturday evening, preparatory to leaving the city.

Mr. Shively with his family will locate in Montpelier, O., where the former will represent a Chicago firm, handling their goods in that city. Mr. Shively returned from Montpelier last evening, where he had been for the past several days completing arrangements for his removal.

Former Policeman Here Death Victim

Funeral of Henry Shively, 86, retired carpenter and a Defiance policeman many years ago, was held Thursday afternoon in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home, Rochester, Ind., followed by burial in the IOOF cemetery there.

Mr. Shively died Tuesday in Woodlawn hospital, Rochester, after a two months illness.

Mr. Shively went to Rochester ten years ago from South Bend, Ind. He was born at Grand Rapids, O., the son of Albert and Catherine Shively.  His wife, Mayme, died several years ago.

He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Grace Herman, Detroit; and a sister, Mrs. Cora Snellgrove, Borger, Texas.

Michael, Daniel and John Shively In Berkeley County, West Virginia

Shively researchers are asking for help with a Michael Shively line that was in Berkeley County, WV and then some family members moved to Jefferson County, KY. There were several Shively families in what is now Berkeley County, WV and one would think that the families knew of each other and were possibly related. From the histories it is known that Frederick County, VA was formed in 1743 from Orange County. Berkeley County, VA was formed in 1772 from Frederick County.  In 1863 Berkeley County, VA became Berkeley County, WV.

PART TWO - Daniel Shively

From the publication Schaublin (Shively) Families from the District of Waldenburg, Baselland, Switzerland by George W. Andrews, Alexandria, Virginia,, 1978 it is know that at the same time Michael Shively was in Berkeley County there was also a Daniel Shively in the same county. From this information it is known that "Daniel Schaublin was born in village and District of Waldenburg, Baselland, Switzerland, baptized 28-May-1709; died 1763 in Frederick County, Virginia; married (1) 21-Jun-1729 to Margaret Spithaler of Waldenburg (Waldenburg Marriage Register, page 56); and married (2) Christina (last name unknown). They have five children, all born in Waldenburg: 1) Daniel, baptized 29-Jan-1730  2) Wernhard, baptized 25-Apr-1731  3) Johannes, baptized 30-May-1741  4) Peter, baptized 16-Feb-1744 and  5) Ursula, baptized 17-Oct-1745.  

The name of Daniel Shively appears as "Daniel Scheubly" in passengetr list 139C for ship Ann, which landed in Philadelphia 28-Sep-1749 (Strassburger and Hinke, 1934, Volume 1, Page 416).

In the land records there are the deeds of lease and release by which Nicholas Lemen (Lehman?) and wife Christian sold a 234 acre tract of land to Daniel Shively in Frederick County, Virginia on 8-Nov-1758 (Frederick County Deed Book 5, page 182-187, Winchester, VA). On 4-Aug-1762 Daniel Shively sold 100 acres of this tract, described as "lying (in Frederick County) on both sides of the wagon road that leads from Swearingens Ferry to Winchester" to his son Daniel and Jacob Choomy (Tschumi) (Frederick County Deed Book 7, pages 261-264).

PART THREE - John Shively

From the following article it is known that there was also a John Shively in this area at the same time as Michael Shively and Daniel Shively.  This information was found in the Descendants of Josiah Flagg of Berkeley County, VA with 7 sketches by Charles Allcott Flagg, 1920, page 67:

APPENDIX E.

THE SHIVELY ANCESTRY

John Shively was a Swiss merchant who came to America with his stock in trade before the Revolution. Having prospered in business, he purchased a large tract of land in Frederick County, Va. (the part now Berkeley County, W. Va.). This is the family tradition.

It has been possible to learn very little about the family. in the home of the late Major G. Flagg of Tennessee, Johns Shively's great-grandson, there is preserved a curious little devotional work in German, "Das kleine davidische psalterspiel der kinder Zions", printed at Philadelphia in 1781. Its end papers and fly-leaves are covered with names and records, among which we find "Mary Shively her book" and "Maragretta Flagg her book", and births of the children of Josiah and Margaretta Flagg--it being the only source now extant for this information.

It would seem to indicate that German was the language of the elder Shivelys, or at least they were familiar with it, but whether this means that John Shively came originally from eastern or German speaking Switzerland, or that he married a Pennsylvania-German, we cannot say. Among the records are the death of John Shively, 4 Nov., 1792, aged 55, and of Mary Shively, 10 May, 1785, aged 48. We infer that Mary was wife of John and mother of Margaretta. No Shively children are recorded, but family tradition has it that Margaretta was the only child.

Located in the Potomak Guardian and Berkeley Advertiser, Martinsburg, West Virginia, Monday, November 5, 1792, Page 3, Column 2:

Saturday night last departed this life in this town, Mr. JOHN SHIVELEY, AEt. 55 --At the late races here, Mr. Shiveley was unfortunately thrown from his horse while crossing the path, and was inwardly bruised to so great a degree that he lay in the most excruciating pain until he expired. --He was a worthy citizen and and honest man.

Henry Ambrose Shively And Marjorie Mott Who Lived In Mahomet and Champaign, Champaign County, IL

Vance Martin has requested a photo of Henry Ambrose Shively.  He can be contacted at Vancesmartin@gmail.com or vmart02s@uillinois.edu if you can help. The reason for this request is because he is a member of the Mahomet Masonic Lodge and Henry Ambrose Shively was the head of this lodge in 1898.  The lodge use to have pictures of all of the heads of the lodge, but about 10 years ago there was water damage to the wall where the pictures hung and some of the pictures were lost. Their lodge has had 98 leaders since 1856 and they have located all but about 15 missing pictures. Vance wanted to reach out to descendants of Henry Ambrose Shively or anyone who might have a picture of him that they could scan and e-mail to him to replace the empty spot for Mr. Shively's photo.

Henry Ambrose Shively was born on 21-Nov-1859 in Bowling Green, Wood County, OH. He died on 24-Sep-1938 in Champaign County, IL.  He was married on 26-Dec-1889 in Gibson City, Ford County, IL to Majorie Mott.  She was born on 3-May-1865 in Athens, Menard County, IL and died on 22-Apr-1951 in Mahomet, Champaign County, IL.  Marjorie was the daughter of James Wellington Mott (1833-1879) and Mary Ann England (1839-1872).  Henry Ambrose Shively was the son of Ambrose Shively and Margaret Jane Dubbs.  (For more information on this family see the Shively blog article written on Friday, January 30, 2015).

Henry Ambrose Shively and Majorie Mott had at least 5 children: Jerome Davidson Shively (1891-1955), Jean Mott Shively (1893-1983), Richard D. Shively (1895-1923), Henry Ambrose Shively, Jr. (1905-1946) and Damon Shively.  From the Gibson City Courier, Gibson City, Illinois, Friday, October 6, 1899, Page 5, Column 1:

Little Damon Shively, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Shively, died last night at the home in Mahomet. The funeral will be held this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Damon are both in Mahomet. Mrs. Shively was formerly Miss Margie Mott of this city.

Shively born Nov-1859 age 40, wife Marjoria M. born May-1866 age 34 married 10 years having 4 children of whom 3 are living, son Jerome D. born May-1891 age 9, daughter Jean born Jan-1893 age 7 and son Richard born Aug-1895 age 4. Listed on the 1910 Champaign Township, Champaign County, IL is the household of Henry A. Shively age 51, wife Marjorie age 45, son Jerome D. age 18, daughter Jean age 17, son Richard age 15, and son H. A. age 4. On the 1920 Champaign City, Champaign Township are Henry A. Shively age 60, wife Marjorie age 54 and son H. A. Jr age 14.

Henry Ambrose Shively, 79, died at his home in Champaign at 9:00 p.m. Saturday, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Shively who will be remembered by early residents of this community had lived in Champaign for forty years.

He was born near Bowling Green Ohio, in 1859, and came to Illinois in 1864, living in Cerro Gordo and Ivsdale before settling in Mahomet in 1883.  After several years there the family moved to Champaign, where he had lived ever since.

He married Marjorie Mott of Gibson City, in 1899, who with three children survive. Surviving children are: Jerome D. Shively, Houston, Tex.; Miss Jean Shively, Cleveland, Ohio, and H. A. Shively, living home.  One son, Richard, died in 1923.

 Andrew J. Shively was born on 13-Sep-1840 in OH and died 9-May-1921 in St. Louis, Gratiot County, MI.  He was the son of John Peter Shively (born 4-May-1810 in PA , died 1898 in Trumbull County, OH) and Hannah Flick (born 1808 in PA, died 14-Nov-1888 in Trumbull County, OH). Andrew Shively married Priscilla Anthony on 4-Apr-1861 in Mahoning County, OH.  Priscilla died soon after the birth of their daughter, Ida P., who was born on 9-Dec-1861.  Andrew married 2nd to Mary Fidelia Folk on 15-Sep-1864. She died on the 5-Jun-1899 in Midland County, MI.  Andrew married 3rd to Mary Allie Scott on 21-Nov-1900 in Gratiot County, MI.  Mary was born on 14-Jul-1861 in Lansing, MI and died on 1-Jan-1937 in Gratiot County, MI.  For information on a brother of Andrew J. Candidate For Treasurer

A. J. Shively candidate for county treasurer was born in Trumbull Co. Oho in 1840.

He is a direct descendant of the illustrious William Tell. Three of Mr. Shively's ancestors served in the Revolutionary war.

Mr. Shively came to Mich in the spring of 1879 settling on the north west quarter, section 30, of Jasper township.

Out of an unbroken forest of one hundred and sixty four acres Mr. Shively has with unceasing toil carved out one of the finest farms in the county known as the Elmwood stock farm.

Mr. Shively has the reputation of being a straight forward business man whose word is as good as his bond. If he is elected to fill the office he will serve the county well.  Vote for him.

The following was found in The Midland Republican, Midland, Michigan, Friday, May 5, 1911, Page 3, Column 2:

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Shively are soon going to Ohio for a visit. They will go in their new auto. Mr. Shively pays his chauffeur $65 per month it is said. Mr. and Mrs. Shively have no children and they live on Easy street.

The following newspaper obituary was taken from the Alma Record, Alma, Michigan, Friday, June 9, 1899, Page 3, Column 2:

Mrs. A. J. Shively of Jasper died at her home six miles north of this city Monday afternoon at five o'clock aged 53 years. The funeral was held Thursday from the house, her pastor Rev. J. A. Mc. Greaham officiating and the remains were laid at rest in the city cemetery.

The following was extracted from the Saginaw News Courier, Saginaw, Michigan, Thursday, May 12, 1921, Page 8, Column 5:

St. Louis Pioneer Dies

ST. LOUIS, Mich., May 12. -- (Special) -- Andrew Jackson Shively, on of the earliest pioneer residents of this vicinity, died at his home on East Saginaw street, Monday afternoon at the age of 81, following a three months' illness. He was born in 1839 in Lordstown, O., and came to St. Louis in 1879. He was a prominent member of the Presbyterian church and was well known throughout the county. He leaves his widow, a sister, Mrs. Sogan Moore, of Warren, O.; a daughter, Mrs. E. D. Snyder, and two grandchildren, of Pasadena, California. The funeral service was held from the house Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and was conducted by Rev. J. A. McGraham of Shawano, Wis., who was the former minister of the Presbyterian church in this city and a very close friend of Mr. Shively.
