Cassius Henry Shively, Ann Miria Pacey And Samilda Jane Reese (Reece) In Hancock, Henry And Wood County, Ohio

Cassius Henry Shively was born June 1, 1858 on the farm of his parents in Big Lick Township, Hancock County, Ohio and died on 28-Jun-1935 in Wood County, OH.  He was the son of James Shively and Mary Maria (Treese) Shively.  His paternal grandparents were Henry and Mary Ann (Chambers) Shively and his maternal grandparents were Henry and Elisabeth Treese. 

Cassius Shively was married 1st to Ann Miria Pacey. Ann died ca. 1882. She was the daughter of William Pacey and Sarah Ann Golden Hedges. Cassius married 2nd to Samilda Jane Reese on 26-Oct-1882. Samilda was born on 25-Apr-1860 in Hancock County, OH and died on 24-May-1947 in Wood County, OH. She was the daughter of Jacob Reese (1822-1885) and Rebecca Schwab (1828-1911). 

Listed on the 1870 Biglick Township, Hancock County, OH census is the family of James Shively age 43, wife Mary age 41, son Isaac N. age 18, son Aaron J. age 16, son James P. age 14, son Cassius age 12, daughter Eliza E. age 10 and daughter Agatha A. age 2. On the 1880 Marion Township, Henry County, OH census is the household of Henry Shively age 22, wife Maria age 21 and daughter Bertha May age 7 months. On the 1900 Jackson Township, Wood County, OH census are Henry C. Shively born Jun-1858 age 41, wife Samilda born Apr-1860 age 40, son Parlee J. born Apr-1883 age 16, daughter Bessie A. born Jun-1886 age 13 and daughter Alta O. born Sep-1892 age 7. Located on the 1910 Jackson Township, Wood County, OH census is Cassius H, Shively age 51 married twice, wife Samilda J. age 49 married once, daughter Bessie A. age 23 and daughter Alta O. age 17. Listed on the 1920 Jackson Township, Wood County, OH census are Cassius H. Shively age 61 and wife Samilda age 59.  Located on the 1930 Jackson Township, Wood County, OH census are Henry Shivley age 7and wife Samilda age 69.

The following was found in the Sentinel Tribune, Bowling Green, Ohio, Thursday, March 24, 1917, Page 2, Columns 6-7:

Chickens Stolen

Deputy Sheriffs Pratt and Isch this morning investigated the theft of some chickens from the home of C. H. Shively, five miles west of Hoytville. Fifteen white Wyandottes were stolen. The thieves cut the wire fence of the chicken yard and broke the lock on the coop.

Apparently there were two thieves and they were traveling in an old car. The officers also learned that evidently the same fellows had stolen 27 chickens from the home of a Belgian in Putnam county, a mile south of the Shively home.

Aged Pioneer Passes Away

Cassius H. Shively, Aged Henry County Man, Dies At His Home Near Deshler

Cassius H. Shively, born June 1, 1858, in Biglick township, Hancock County, Ohio; departed this life June 28, 1935, near Deshler, Wood County, Ohio, at the age of 77 years and 27 days.

His early life was spent with his parents in pioneering a home in Henry County.

In 1876 he was united in marriage to Maria Ann Pacey, who departed this life in 1880, In 1882 he was united in marriage to Samilda J. Reece. They settled on a farm between Rawson, O., and McComb, Ohio. In 1890 they moved to the present farm near Deshler, Ohio. Here they have reared their family and lived a life of service and sacrifice.

Being a man of deep sympathy and tender thought he was always ready to do his part toward his God and fellowmen.

As a husband and father his duty was performed faithfully and cheerfully.

He was a religious man. In his early manhood he affiliated himself with the Church of the Brethren and later with the Disciple church. He was always a man of prayer and faith. His ambition and love for home and country was manifested by the farm, and stock he always cared for with pride.

He enjoyed reading along educational lines and always encouraged a better education for his family.

To mourn his departure are his faithful wife, one son and three daughters, namely: Bertha Mae Osenbaugh, Leipsic, Ohio; Parlie J. Shively, McClure, Ohio; Bessie A. Brown, Troy, Ohio; Alta O. Hutchison, Deshler, also one lister Mrs. Lydia Litzenberg, McComb, Ohio, together with grandchildren, neighbors and friends.

Hold Rites For Mrs. Schively, 87, Hoytville Lady

Dies Saturday; Rites Held Here On Monday

Funeral services for Mrs. Samilda Jane Schively, 87, of Hoytville, were held at the Pelter funeral home at 2:30 Monday afternoon with the Rev. Glenn Fruth, pastor of the church of the Brethren officiating. Burial was in Leipsic. Six of her grandchildren acted as pallbearers.

Mrs. Schively died at 1:25 a.m. Saturday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alta Hutchinson, who lives one and one half miles west of Hoytville. Mrs. Schively suffered a broken hip in a fall 18 months ago and had been an invalid since then.

The deceased was born in Hancock county, April 25, 1860, a daughter of Jacob and Rebecca Reese. She married Henry Schively, October 26, 1882, and he preceded her in death in 1935.

Three children survive: Mrs. Hutchinson, Mrs. Bessie Brown, Troy, Ohio, and Mrs. Bertha Osenbaugh, Leipsic. She also has a brother living, Luther Reese, McComb. One son, three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Other surviving are 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

John married 2nd on 27-Nov-1890 in Paulding County, OH to Hattie Mead (1865-1897). She was the daughter of Smith D. Mead (1832-1874) and Lydia Ann H. Carey (1833-1888). John married 3rd on 17-Jun-1900 in Van Wert County, OH to Cindarilla Lucinda Utt (born 4-Feb-1864 died Jul-1949). She was the daughter of William A. Utter (1827-1870) and Sophia Matthews (1825-1881). John married 4th on 7-Oct-1908 in Berrien County, MI to Lillie (Lilly) L. Wales (born 12-Jul-1867 died 28-Apr-1927). She was the daughter of James Wales and Elizabeth Biddinger. Lillie Wales was married 1st to John Flynn.

On the 1880 Brown Township, Paulding County, OH census is the household of David Carey age 54, wife Sarah L. age 51, daughter Lucy age 19, daughter Mary L. age 21, servant Amos Himebaugh age 11, son-in-law John L. Shively age 26 and daughter Hattie L. Shively age 27. On the 1900 Union Township, Scott Village, Van Wert County, OH census are Catharine Shively  born Nov-1832 age 67, son John L. born Aug-1855 age 44 and grand daughter Cora H. born Sep-1896 age 3.  Listed on the 1920 Richland Township, Fulton County, IN census are John L. Shively age 63, wife Lillie L. age 57, mother Catherine age 96, grand daughter Erma Price age 7 and Ruth Price age 6 months.

John Louis Shively

John Louis Shively, aged 85, of rural route No. 2, Lydick, this county, died there in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harvey Hardy, at 3:40 a.m. today. He was born Aug. 31, 1855, in Grand Rapids, O., and came here 15 years ago from Fulton county, Indiana. He was married in 1906 in Niles, Mich., to Lillie Flinn, who preceded him in death. Surviving are two daughtes, Mrs. Cora Bailey, of Bartlesville, Okla., and Mrs. Hardy, a brother, Henry Shively, Rochester, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Cora Suelgrove, of Borger Texas, and eight grand-children. Friends will be recieved in the residence Thursday evening and until the funeral at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lydick Evangelical church. Rev. Norman Detroy, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.

Flynn-Shively Wedding

Ceremony Performed By The Bride's Father

Wednesday evening, October 7, the home of Mrs. Lilly Flynn, south of this city was the scene of a very pretty wedding, the contracting parties being Mrs. Flynn and J. L. Shively. The ceremony was performed at 8 p.m. by the bride's father, Rev. Jas. Wales, formally of this city, now of Berrien Springs.

About eight guests were present, those from out of town being Chas. Hiatt and wife of Rochester, Ind., John Toner, wife and daughter of Bristol, Ind., and Jeremiah Toner and family of South Bend.

Many beautiful and useful presents were received.

Mr. and Mrs. Shively are well known in this community, Mr. Flynn having acted in the capacity of Superintendent of Truitt's Chapel Sunday School the past summer.

The newly married couple will spend a few days at Rochester, Ind., but will be a home after Oct. 14, and will take up their residence on the farm three miles south of Niles.

The many friends and neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Shively extend best wished and congratulations.

The newspaper obituary for Lillie Wales first husband, John Flynn, was located in The Bremen Enquirer, Bremen, Indana, Friday, June 1, 1900, Page 5, Column 4:

John Flynn, a prominent farmer living several miles south of Argos, in Fulton County, was struck and instantly killed by lightning Sunday afternoon. He had returned from church and was leaning on a barbed wire fence. The lightning first struck a telephone wire and then glanced to the barbed wire fence and killed Mr. Flynn.. His daughter at his side was knocked unconscious.

Burial Of The Victim

Mrs. Orata Price Will Be Taken To South Bend

The funeral services for Mrs. Orata Price, the hapless victim of the Sunday night tragedy at Bertrand will be held at the humble home of the Price's Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. The remains will then be taken to South Bend where further services will be held at Beulah Chapel at one o'clock, followed by interment at Riverview cemetery.

Mrs. Price was a daughter of John G. Flinn, who was killed at Rochester, Ind., 10 years ago by a stroke of lightning. His widow remarried J L Shively and lives just a short distance from where the death of her daughter occurred.

The deceased was born Jan. 24, 1889. She is a granddaughter of Rev. and Mrs. J. A. Wales of Arden, Mich, the former at one time being the pastor of Beulah chapel.

The life of Price seems to be marked with misfortune. He was married Dec. 27, 1906, and since that time he has buried two children who died during infancy.

While employed at the Singer factory, his right hand accidentally became entangled in a machine and he lost all his fingers with the exception of the thumb.

Recently he began doing cement contracting work and that he might reduce his expenses to a minimum he bought a small strip of ground near Bertrand where he built a small frame house scarcely 20 feet square. While the little home is only sparcely furnished it showed that care had been taken of it by the young woman who presided over it who was taken from him so ruthlessly.

Henry Shively was born on 16-Sep-1857 in Grand Rapids, Wood County, OH and died on 11-May-1943 in Rochester, Fulton County, IN. He was the son of Albert Shively (died 1879 in Clay County, TX) and Catherine Harris (born 17-Nov-1829 died 10-Oct-1927 in Hutchinson County, TX). Henry was married to Mary (Mamie) Ellen Cudhea on 24-Jun-1885 in Paulding County, OH.  She was the daughter of John Cuddaho (1833-1864) and Honora A. Fighney (1834-1920). 

Listed on the 1900 Defiance Township, Defiance County, OH census is the family of Henry Shively born Sep-1857 age 42, wife Mamie born Sep-1863 age 36, daughter Nora born Apr-1887 age 13, daughter Grace born Feb-1891 age 9, mother in law Nora Cudhea age 65, niece Blanch Columbia born Jun-1888 age 11 and niece Catherine Columbia born May-1894 age 6. On the 1910 Dayton Township, Dayton City, Montgomery County, OH census are Henry J. Shively age 49, wife Mamie E. age 43, and daughter Grace T. age 19. On the 1940 Rochester, Fulton County, IN census is the household of Henry Shively age 82 widowed, cousin Ralph Devault age 25, cousin Vivian Devault age 26 and cousin John Devault age 2.

From the census records above it is known Henry and Mamie Shively had daughters Nora and Grace Shively.  The following newspaper article named a third daughter, Eursel Shively.  Located in the Defiance Express, Friday, October 23, 1896, Page 6, Column 1:

Eursel Shively, daughter of Henry and Mamie Shively, died at their home 203 Main street, Monday, at 11:30 a.m., aged 1 year, 1 month and 21 days. Funeral from English Catholic church at 8 o'clock Wednesday. The remains will be interred at Junction.

Change In The Police Force

The resignation of Henry Shively of the Defiance police force has been accepted by Mayor Evans and Gust Matthews will be appointed by Mayor Evans to fill the vacancy, subject to the confirmation of the city council.

Policeman Shively made a faithful officer and retires with the good will of the city officials.

Has Closed Up Auction Store

Henry Shively, who for the past year has conducted an auction store on Clinton street near Fourth, will close the place for good Saturday evening, preparatory to leaving the city.

Mr. Shively with his family will locate in Montpelier, O., where the former will represent a Chicago firm, handling their goods in that city. Mr. Shively returned from Montpelier last evening, where he had been for the past several days completing arrangements for his removal.

Former Policeman Here Death Victim

Funeral of Henry Shively, 86, retired carpenter and a Defiance policeman many years ago, was held Thursday afternoon in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home, Rochester, Ind., followed by burial in the IOOF cemetery there.

Mr. Shively died Tuesday in Woodlawn hospital, Rochester, after a two months illness.

Mr. Shively went to Rochester ten years ago from South Bend, Ind. He was born at Grand Rapids, O., the son of Albert and Catherine Shively.  His wife, Mayme, died several years ago.

He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Grace Herman, Detroit; and a sister, Mrs. Cora Snellgrove, Borger, Texas.

Charles Morrison Shively Who Lived In Wood County And Henry County, Ohio

Charles Morrison Shively was born 18-Aug-1848 in Wood County, OH and died 2-Oct-1935 in Henry County, OH.  He was the son of Henry Ambrose Shively (1802-1886) and Margaret McCartney (1804-1879). Charles was married first to Frances Holtz, daughter of James Holtz and Mary Ann Bretz. Frances Holtz Shively was born 2-Mar-1849 and died 28-Aug-1871 in Wood County, OH as a result of childbirth. Charles Shively married second on 4-Aug-1879 in Hancock County, OH to Francis "Fanny" Celeste Lewis. C. M. Shively Dies At Age 87

Rites of Ex-Holgate Livery Man To Be Sunday; Bury At Defiance

Holgate, Oct. 3 -- Funeral services for Charles M. Shively, 87, formerly the proprietor of a livery barn here, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Joseph Smith, one and a half miles northwest of Holgate, where he died Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Rev. S. K. Strauss, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church of Holgate, will conduct the rites and burial will be made in Riverside cemetery, Defiance.

Infirmities of age caused Mr. Shively's death. He passed away while sitting in a chair. He had been able to get about the house until a short time before.

He was born in 1848 in Bowling Green. Forty-five years ago he moved into a farm southwest of here and 30 years ago began operating a livery barn in Holgate.

Since his wife passed away eight years ago, he had made his home with the daughter in whose residence he died.

Surviving are two sons, Frank of Detroit, and John of Vickery, O.; two daughters, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. George Walton, Pembino, N.D.; 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A daughter and a son preceded the father in death.

Mrs. Shivley, Holgate Will Be Buried Here

The body of Mrs. C. M. Shivley, 68, who died Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at her home in Holgate will be taken to Riverside cemetery for burial, following funeral services Friday at 2 p.m. at her late home.

Mrs. Shivley is well known here, having visited a number of times at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. C. O. Haley, 721 Thurston street.

Mrs. Charles Galimore, who lives a mile from Defiance on the Fort Wayne road is a sister, and Mrs. George Cooper of Defiance is a neice. Mrs. Maude Clady and Ralph Shivley who preceded their mother in death are interred in Riverside cemetery.

Surviving are the husband, and four children: John H. Shivley, Fostoria; Frank L. Shivley, Detroit; Mrs. Joseph Smith, Holgate; and Mrs. George R. Waldron, Draton, N.D. The latter daughter cared for her mother during her illness.

Alfred Shively Who Lived In Wood County, Ohio And Died During The Civil War In Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia

Alfred Shively was born 9-Sep-1835 Bowling Green, Wood County, OH and died 20-Sep-1863 in Chickamauga, Walker County, GA.  He was the son of Henry Ambrose Shively (born 28-May-1802 in Union County, PA and died 5-Mar-1886 Wood County, OH) and Margaret McCartney (born 10-Mar-1804 and died 5-May-1879).  Alfred Shively entered service in Macon County, IL on 11-Aug-1862 and mustered in on 13-Sep-1862 at Camp Butler, IL. He was a Private in Company F, 115th Illinois Infantry. He was listed as being 5' 9", Light hair, Gray Eyes and Dark Complexion.

In Memoriam

(A few days ago since we received a letter postmarked "Vicksburg, Miss., Nov. 10," which contained the following obituary notice of Alfred Shively -- son of Henry Shively, Esg., of Bowling Green, this county --who was killed at the battle of Chicmauga. Except the postmark, there was nothing about the letter to show from whence it came. We do not know the author's name, but believing it to be the heartfelt tribute of a solider to one of Wood County's gallant sons who fell in the service of his country, we gladly publish it. --Eds-Journal.)

OBITUARY.  Alfred Shively, who fell at the battle of Chicamauga, in Northern Georgia, was well and favorably known to many in this community. He came among us a stranger, but his honest, manly face and frank, gentlemanly bearing, soon won for him good and true friends--such only as the good and true are capable of winning. No man ever distrusted him, or had cause of distrust. The golden rule was to him the law of life, and no one could know him without feeling that the world was the better for his living in it He left his plow, and the peaceful pursuits of the farmer, for the battlefield--not, as he said, from choice, but because his country had a right to claim his services, and they should not be withheld, whatever might be the sacrifice on his part. In his last letter, written the day before the battle, he says: "do not give yourselves any unnecessary trouble in regard to me. If it be my lot to fall in battle, rest assured that I shall fall at my post of duty. I shall never disgrace my friends nor the cause I am fighting for, but will do my duty as a true patriot and lover of my country, and the glorious old flag that is now unfurled to the breeze, and under whose shadow I now write". As to how well he kept his promise, let his brave companions in arms testify. His last words were, "Come on, boys, the day is ours; the enemy is retreating"!

Beneath the far-off battle field he rests quietly and well.  He leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss, which is deeply felt. His brother he often spoke of, and seemed to have a great anxiety for his welfare. He is highly spoken of by his officers, as a true patriot and a good soldier.

In Memoriam

Among the many who laid down their lives for their country, on the bloody field of Chicamauga, was Alfred Shively, son of Henry Shively, Esq., of this place. In his death, his parents and community have sustained a severe loss. No more worthy young man ever lived. He was one who made warm friends wherever he went. At the time of his enlistment he resided in Illinois, and his employers tried to persuade them not to leave. Said he: "When I see men with families turning out to defend my country, I cannot stay behind". His memory will every be fondly cherished by all who knew him. May He who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb, sustain and comfort his aged parents to this their hour of affliction. And in view of the new call for more men to crush this infernal rebellion, may our young men remember the example set them by young Shively, and "go and do likewise".          W. R. P.

A Shively descendant recently enquired about more information on the lineage of his grandfather, Ronald Shively.  Original research was done to see if additional information could be found.  

The following family is listed on the 1940 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan census: Ronald Shively age 32 born PA and an engraver in a printing shop, wife Catherine age 23 born in Canada and daughter Shirley age 2 born in Michigan.  On the 1930 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan census is Frank Shively age 48 born in OH and a tool maker at an auto factory, wife Cora age 48, born in OH and married 22 years, son Sinclair age 24 born in OH and an engraver in photo engraving, son Ronald age 22 years born in PA and an engraver in photo engraving, boarder Ruby Gates age 18 born in TN and a cigar maker in a cigar factory. The following family is located on the 1920 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan census: Frank L Shively age 37 and a tool maker for a motor car company, wife Cora age 37, son Sinclair age 14, and son Ronald age 11. On the 1910 Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan is Frank Shively age 28, wife Cora age 28, son Sinclair age 4 and son Ronald age 2.  

On the WWI registration card is Frank Louis Shively, 1220 Brush, Detroit, MI, age 37, born 31-August-1881 and working for Ford Motor Company.  His nearest relative is listed as Cora Shively,wife.  On the WWII registration card is Frank Louis Shively, 6422 Lincoln Ave, Detroit, Wayne Co, MI, age 60, born 30-Aug-1881, born near Bowling Green, OH.  He is listed as working for himself, Shively Radio and Appliances.  

Frank L Shively and Cora Bush were married in Crawford County, OH on 4-May-1904.  Frank is the son of Charley Shively and Fanny Lewis and was born in Wood County, OH.  Frank's residence is given as Toledo, OH.   Cora Bush her residence as Crestline, Crawford County, OH.  

Charles M Shively and Fanny Lewis were married on 4-August-1879 in Hancock County, OH.  Charles Morrison Shively and Francis (Fanny) Celeste Shively are buried in Riverside Cem, Defiance County, OH.  Charles Morrison Shively was born 18-Aug-1848 in Wood County, OH and died 2-Oct-1935 in Henry County, OH.   Fanny Lewis was born 18-Dec-1858 and died 9-Aug-1927 in Henry County, OH. She was the daughter of John Lewis. The Ohio death certificate for Charles M Shively lists his father as John H. Shively.  It is possible the H. stands for Henry.

Killed By Lightning

MAHOMET, Ill., July 28--During the storm this afternoon lightning struck and killed A. M. Shively, a prominent and highly esteemed farmer living two miles south of this place, while in the hay field, slightly shocking Oscar Wright and his hired hand, but these latter soon rallied.  Mr. Shively leaves an estimable wife and several grown up children.  He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and will be buried by the order.

From the Illinois Death Records it is known that Daniel Webster Shively was born 6-Jan-1858 in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio.  He died on 19-Dec-1927 in Champaign County, IL. URBANA, Dec. 22--Funeral services for Daniel Webster Shively were held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in charge of the Rev. B. M. Petty. The Masonic lodge had charge of the services at the grave in Riverside cemetery, where burial was made.

Mr. Shively died at 10 o'clock Monday night.  He was born Jan. 6, 1858, in Bowling Green, O., and came to Illinois with his parents in 1865, first locating at Ivesdale. He was married in 1884 to Miss Minerva Watts, of Ivesdale, and they came to Mahomet in 1898 to make their home.

Surviving Mr. Shively are his widow and three children, Frank R. and Mrs. Estella Know, Mahomet, and Mrs. C. J. Wegeng, 1105 West Washington street, Champaign.  H. A. Shively, 41 West White street, Champaign, is a brother.  A sister, Mattie Shively, died Fe. 22, 1919.  There are five surviving grandchildren.

Mr. Shively was a member of the Modern Woodmen and Masonic fraternities and of the Methodist Episcopal church.

From the Illinois Death Records it is known that Henry Ambrose Shively was born 21-Nov-1859 in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio.  He died on 26-Sep-1938 in Champaing County, IL.  He was married to Marjorie Mott.  Additional information on Henry A. Shively was located in the History Of the Board Of Trade Of The City Of Chicago, Edited by Charles H Taylor, In Three Volumes, Illustrated, Volume III, Chicago, Robert O. Law Company, 1917, pages 294-295:

HENRY A. SHIVELY - At this juncture is given merited recognition to one of the representative non-resident members of the Board of Trade, on the rolls of which his name has been recorded since 1908.  He is known as one of the large grain operators of central Illinois and maintains his residence and business headquarters in the city of Champaign, judicial center and metropolis of the county of the same name, where he is executive head of the extensive, well known and influential grain firm of H. A. Shively & Company, which not only controls a large grain business but also maintains a number of well equipped elevators in the central part of the state. Mr. Shively is a scion of one of the old and prominent families of the Buckeye state and was born in Wood county, Ohio, on the 21st of November, 1859, a son of Ambrose and Jane (Dudds) Shively.  The father was born in Ohio and became one of the substantial farmers and honored citizens of Wood county.  In 1865 he came to Champaign County, Illinois, residing there until his death in the year 1884, his widow surviving him by a number of years and their children having been three in number.  Henry A. Shively acquired his youthful education in the public schools of Illinois and as a young man he learned the trade of telegraphy.  As an expert operator he served as train dispatcher on various railroads, and he continued to be thus engaged until 1884.  His ambition led him into a broader and more independent field of endeavor and in 1887 he identified himself with the grain business, of which he has continued a resourceful and successful exponent during the long intervening period of thirty years,--a period marked by vigorous and resourceful application on his part and also by cumulative success.  As a liberal and progressive citizen Mr. Shively takes lively interest in community affairs in his home city and though he has never desired political preferment he gives staunch support to the Republican party.  He is affiliated with the Masonic fraternity and the Modern Woodmen of America, and both he and his wife are active members of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Champaign, in which city their attractive home is at 411 West White street.  In 1890 was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Shively to Miss Marjorie Mott, a daughter of Henry Mott, of Athens, Illinois, and the four children of this union are Jerome D., Jeane, Richard, and Henry A., Jr.
