James Shively And Mary C. Meadows Who Lived In Franklin County, Virginia

James Shively was born about 1850 and died on 6-Mar-1873 in Franklin County, VA. He was the son of Jacob Shively and Elizabeth Huff. Jacob Shively and Elizabeth Huff were married in Franklin County, VA on 20-Feb-1847. 

James Shively married Mary C. Meadows in Floyd County, VA on 22-Apr-1872. They had one daughter, Nellie L. Shively who was born 27-Jan-1873 and died 30-Dec-1918.  Nellie Shively married John Sigmon in Franklin County, VA on 30-Dec-1897.  John Sigmon was born ca. 1871 and died on 3-Jan-1946 in Caswell County, NC.

Listed on the 1860 S. Wst. District, Franklin County, VA census is the family of Jacob Shiveley age 31, wife Elizabeth age 31, daughter Mary age 12, son James age 8, daughter Julia age 7, son John E. age 4 and daughter Virginia age 1.  Located on the 1870 Long Branch Township, Franklin County, VA census is Jacob Shively, age 48, wife Malinda age 44, son James age 20, daughter Julia age 17, son Edward age 15, daughter Virginia age 12, daughter Eliza age 9, son Sparrel age 7 and daughter Elizabeth age 4.

The following article was found in the Richmond Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, Wednesday, March 12, 1873, Page 3, Column 2:

A little affray took place at Rocky Mount on Monday evening about dark, which resulted in a very serious if not fatal injury of one of the parties engaged. A very pestilent fellow named Hodges struck a young man by the name of Shively on the head with a four-pound weight. Shively has been delirious nearly ever since and now lies in an unconscious state. His physicians think it hardly probable that he can recover. Hodges has been arrested and lodged in jail. Public sentiment is very strong against Hodges, and he will doubtless be punished to the utmost that the law will allow.

The trial of Jacob S. Hodges, for the killing of James J. Shively, in Franklin county, is progressing before the Circuit Court in Roanoke county. This case was removed from the county of Franklin where the killing took place.

The following was located in The Norfolk Virginian, Norfolk, Virginia, Friday, August 22, 1873, Page 1, Column 6:

Jacob S. Hodges was convicted in Roanoke county, last week, of killing young Shively, at Franklin Courthouse, last March, and sentenced to fifteen years in the penitentiary.
