William Wells Shively was born 13-Feb-1903 in Rush Run, Belmont County, OH and died 14-Sep-1965 in Martins Ferry Hospital, Belmont County, OH. He was the son of William Henry Shively and Lula Wells. William Wells Shively was married to Geneva Kimble who was born ca. 1908 and died 18-Jun-1968 in Belmont County, OH.  She was the daughter of Charles W. and Mary Kimble.  (For more information on the ancestors of William Wells Shively see the Shively blog article written on Saturday, April 21, 2012). 

Listed on the 1940 Mt. Pleasant Township, Jefferson County, OH census is the household of William Shively are 37, wife Geneva age 32,  step-son Merrick Smith Jr. age 12, son William T. Shively age 9, daughter Maxine age 6, daughter Mary L. age 4, son Charles B. age 3 and son Lawrence W. age 9 months.

RAYLAND -- William Wells Shively, 62, of RD 2, Rayland, died Tuesday in Martins Ferry Hospital. Mr. Shively was a retired miner and township employe.

He leaves his widow; Mrs. Geneva Kimber Shively; four sons, William Shively of Bellaire, Wayne Shively of Glen Robbins, Henry Shively of Portsmouth, Va., and Bruce Shively of Yorkville; two daughters, Mrs. John Skatula of Dillonvale and Mrs. Gene Kropka of  Glen Robbins;  three stepsons, Merrick Smith of Glen Robbins, Rowland Smith of Mt. Pleasant and Robert Smith of Seattle, Wash.; 24 grandchildren, and a brother, Henry Shively of Steubenville.

Friends may call at the Burford Funeral Home, Tiltonsville, from 7-9 tonight and from 2-4 p.m., and 7-9 p.m., Thursday; services there Friday, 2 p.m.; Highland Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.

TILTONSVILLE -- Mrs. Geneva Kimble Shively, 60, of 608 1/2 Maple Ave., died today at 7:45 a.m. in Martins Ferry Hospital.

She leaves seven sons, WIlliam Tex Shively of Bridgeport, Bruce Shively of Yorkville, Wayne Shively of Bellaire, Henry Shively of Porthsmouth, Va., Merrick Smith of Martins Ferry, Rowland Smith of Mt. Pleasant and Robert Smith of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. John Skatuala of Dillonvale and Mrs. Gene Cropka of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Vern Kimble of Yorkville; 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Van-Hove Funeral Home, Tiltonsville, from 7-9 p.m. today; and from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral arrangements are pending.

David P. Shively was born ca. 1825 and died 9-Mar-1891 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA. He was marred 1st to Elizabeth McVenor Claudy, daughter of Robert C. Claudy and Hanna M. (Thacker or Hatcher). Elizabeth was born 1-Feb-1833 in Barnesville, Belmont County, OH and died 10- Aug-1923 in Franklin County, OH. David Shively was married 2nd to Mary Jane (last name unknown) who was born ca. 1837 and died ca. 1900.

David P. Shively and 1st wife Elizabeth McVenor Claudy had at least 5 children: 1)Almira Shively born 7-Jun-1851 died 7-Oct-1879 buried in Mansfield Cemetery, Richland County, OH married Hulbert Wesley Ditwiler (he married 2nd Helen Corlies 2) A. Laura Shively 3) John Shively born ca. 1854 4) William Jerome Shively was born 9-Sep-1856 Somerton, Belmont County, OH and died 14-May-1922 Quaker City, Guernsey County, OH married Willie Ann Goodhart and 5)Thomas Lemuel Shively born 12-Jan-1858 in Somerton, Belmont County, OH died 16-Jul-1929 in Batesville, Noble County, OH married Sarah Elizabeth Wehr.

David P. Shively and 2nd wife Mary J. had at least 3 children:  1) Henry Raymond Shively was born 19-Jul-1872 and died 29-Sep-1877 in Cumberland County, PA 2) Alice M. Shively was born Aug-1876 and died 12-Mar-1909 married 1st to Jacob Lemuel Hair and married 2nd to George P. Roush 3) Wilbur B. Shively born Feb-1879.

W. Jerome Shively

W. Jerome Shively, aged about 60 years, a well known business man of Quaker City, died at his home at that place Monday evening at 6 o'clock, death being due to heart trouble. Mr. Shively had been ill only a short time and the news of his sudden death was a great shock to his many friends. Mr. Shively for many years was engaged in the merchantile business, dealing extensively in wool and tobacco at Batesville, Noble county. He served two years as auditor of Noble county, and was at one time chief clerk in the office of State Inspector of Workshops and Factories. Almost three years ago he moved to Quaker City, where he opened a large general store, in which he was very successful. He is survived by his widow, three sons, Dr. John Shively, of Phildadelphia, Richard and Robert, who are connected with the Quaker City store, and three daughters, Misses Elizabeth and Emma Louise, students of O.S.U., and Laura, of the home.

Mrs. Willie A. Shively

Mrs. Willie Ann Shively, aged 77, wife of the late Jerome Shively, former residents of Batesville, passed away at a hospital in Lafayette, Ind.. The body arrived at the Eberle funeral home on Sunday morning and remained there until Monday afternoon when services in charge of Rev. A. A. Gilmore were held and burial made in the Friends cemetery. She was the daughter of Daniel and Mary Goodhart formerly of Batesville. Her husband, a son, John and daughter, Laura preceded her.

She is survived by two daughters and two sons; Mrs. Louise Sherwin of Toledo; Mrs. Elizabeth Martin of Washington, D.C.; Robert Shively with the 388 Air Force Squadron somewhere in the Philippines; Richard Shively of Washington, D.C., and several granchildren.

Veteran Traveling Salesman Succumbs

Hulbert W. Ditwiler Passes Away Today After A Brief Illness

Hulbert W. Ditwiler, who in point of years of service was the oldest traveling salesman in Mansfield and one of three oldest in the state, died about 2:15 o'clock this morning at his home, 27 Baldwin avenue, after a brief illness. He was taken ill two weeks ago last Saturday, and his death came very unexpectedly as he had apparently been improving somewhat during the past few days.

Born Oct. 19, 1851, at Bellville, Hulbert Wesly Ditwiler became a traveling salesman at the age of 19 years. He continued in active service in that line of work until two weeks ago. With his father, the late John Ditwiler, and his brothers, Harvey G. and Homer B. Ditwiler, he organized the Buckeye Suspender company, which was engaged in the manufacturing business for a long period of years. He came to Mansfield, Jan. 1, 1867, and has made his residence her continuously since that time.

He was a faithful and conscientious member of the First Congregational church.

Besides a son, Herbert C., and a daughter, Miss Dorothy, he is survived by two brothers, Homer B. and Harvey G. Ditwiler, both of this city.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from his late home, conducted by the Rev. O. L. Kiplinger.

Mrs. George P. Roush

Mrs. Alice M. Roush, wife of George P. Roush, died suddenly Sunday afternoon at her home, Second street, Boiling Springs.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Boiling Springs, the Ladies Aid Society, the Ever Faithful Sunday School Class and the P.O.S. of A., Carlisle.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, A. Frank Hair, Carlisle; Paul Hair, Harrisburg; two step-daughters, Mrs. Phillip Wise and Mrs. Harold Wise, both of Carlisle, R. D. 6; 10 grandchildren and four great-granchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Shulenberger Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday evening.

Elizabeth McVenor Claudy, 1st wife Of David P. Shively, Who Lived In Noble, Belmont And Franklin Counties, Ohio

The subject of the blog article for August 18, 2018 was David P. Shively. Information has been found for this blog article relating to his 1st wife, Elizabeth McVenor Claudy, daughter of Robert C. Claudy and Hanna M. (Thacker or Hatcher).  Elizabeth was born 1-Feb-1833 in Barnesville, Belmont County, OH and died 10-Aug-1923 in Franklin County, OH.  David and Elizabeth must have gotten a divorce because he remarried a second time.  The children from the marriage of David and Elizabeth seemed to have stayed to be raised by her. 

Listed on the 1850 Somerset Township, Belmont County, OH census are David P. Shively age 24 and wife Elizabeth age 17.  Located on the 1860 Somerset Township, Belmont County, OH census is the family of David Shively age 32, wife Elizabeth age 26, daughter Almira age 10, daughter Annie age 8, son John age 6, son Jerome age 4 and son Lemmie age 1. Found on the 1870 Town of Somerton, Somerset Township, Belmont County, OH is the household of Elizabeth Shiveley age 35, daughter Allie age 20, daughter Laura age 18, son Jerome age 13 and son Lemmie age 11.  Listed on the 1880 Somerton, Somerset Township, Belmont County, OH census are Elisabeth Shively age 48, daughter A. Laura age 27, son J. William age 23 and son T. Lemuel age 21.  On the 1910 Caldwell, Noble County, OH census is the household of Jerome Shively age 50, wife Willie A. age 42, son John C. age 21, son Richard M. age 17, son Robert C. age 12, daughter Mary E. age 9, daughter Emma L. age 7, daughter Laura V. age 3, mother Elizabeth M. age 77 and servant Carrie Hare age 18.

Mrs. Elizabeth McVenor Shively, aged 90, widow of David Shively, was found dead in bed Friday morning at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. W. A. Shively, 380 West Eighth avenue.   A son, Lemuel Shively, of Batesville, also survives. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at the home of the daughter-in-law. The body will be taken to Batesville by the Schoedinger company for burial.

Henry Smith Shively And Wife, Emily E. Scamehorn, In Jefferson County, Ohio

The county history's are a good resource for genealogy information if the ancestor you are looking for has a biography.  In the 20th Century History Of Steubenville And Jefferson County, Ohio And Representative Citizens, By Joseph B. Doyle, "History Is Philosophy Teaching By Example", Published by Richmond-Arnold Publishing Co., F. J. Richmond, Pres., C. R. Arnold, Sec'y and Treas, Chicago, IL 1910, pages 825-826 is a biography for Henry Smith Shively.

HENRY SMITH SHIVELY, general farmer and respected and representative citizen, who owns 161 acres of well improved land in Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, was born in Belmont County, Ohio, February 13, 1839, and is a son of Richard and Jane (Smith) Shively.

     Richard Shively was also born in Belmont County and was left fatherless in childhood.  He remained in Belmont County until manhood and worked there as a mechanic, but after coming to Jefferson County he bought a farm in Warren Township and resided there and engaged in agricultural pursuits during the remainder of his life.  He married Jane Smith, who was born in West Virginia.  They died on Warren Ridge, Warren Township, aged eighty and eighty-two years, respectively.  They had five children, namely: Sarah Ann, now deceased, who was the wife of George Nell, also deceased; and Henry S., John B., George and Forgus Richard.

     Henry S. Shively, was quite young when his parents came to Jefferson County and he grew to manhood on the home farm in Warren Township, obtaining his education in the old log schoolhouse near his home.  In 1863, after his marriage, he operated a portable saw-mill and was so engaged until 1874, when he bought his present farm, later suffering the loss of his buildings by fire.  He erected the present substantial structures and has made other valuable improvements.  This property formerly belonged to Smallwood & Winning.

     In January, 1863, Mr. Shively was married to Miss Emily E. Scamehorn, who died in 1905, aged sixty-one years.  She was a daughter of Henry Scamehorn, and old resident of Jefferson County.  To Mr. and Mrs. Shively ten children were born as follows:  Charles, who married Sarah Williams, and has a large family; John D. and Sarah Jane, twins, the former of whom died, leaving a widow, formerly Maggie Todd, Sarah Jane being the wife of Kenneth Blake, who operates Mr. Shively's farm, and mother of four children--Margaret May, Henry E., Lina Bell, and Kenneth A.;  Elmer E., who married Margaret Brendley; William, who married Louella Wells, who, at death, left two children--Henry T. and William W.; Anna Bell, deceased, who was the wife of William Barnes; Ida, who married Robert Carpenter and has four children--Earl, Emma, Della and Carl;  Alice; and Margaret and Harley, twins, the latter of whom married Lillian Bell and has three children---Mildred,Harry and Mary Margaret.  Mrs. Shively has reason to be proud of this large family of descendants, showing as they do evidence of vigorous stock and they also display in business and at school, down to the youngest, the qualities which promise future usefulness.  In his political views Mr. Shively is a Republican.

The newspapers from Steubenville, Ohio and Wheeling, West Virginia contain information that mentions the family of Henry and Emily Shively.    An article from The Wheeling Register, Sunday, March 9, 1890, Page 2, Column 5 indicates that Henry and Emily may have had differences and gotten a divorce.  This information seems to be supported by the 1900 Jefferson County, Ohio census.  In Wells Township household 315 is Luke Scamehorn and family, household 316 is Emily Shively who is listed as head of the household, and in household 317 is Henry Shively as head of household with daughter Alice, son Harley and daughter Maggie.
