Alexander Potter Shively was born in May-1839 in Steubenville, Jefferson County, OH and died 23-Oct-1912 in Malhuer County, OR. He was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Shively. Howel age 12.  The next entry is Alexander Shively age 30 and wife Elizabeth age 24.  Located on the 1880 White Pine County, NV census are Alex P. Shively age 41 occupation miner, wife Lizzie age 33, daughter Jessie M. age 8, son Delbert F. age 6 and daughter Mable L. age 3. On the 1800 Bryan Precinct, Elko County, NV census is the household of Delbert Shively born May-1874 age 26 occupation miner placer, wife Inez V. born Mar-1880 age 20, daughter Winnifred born Sep-1899 age 8 month, father Alexander P. born May-1839 age 61 widowed, and partner Pinkard P. Prunty born Aug-1881 age 18.

The following article was extracted from The Pioche Record, Pioche, NV, Saturday, July 24, 1880, Page 3, Column 3:  FATAL RUNAWAY ACCIDENT. -- From Wash Woodbury, who arrived in Ward this morning, me learn of a runaway accident in Spring Valley Tuesday last, resulting in the death of Mable Shively, daughter of A. P. Shively, a former resident of this place. Mrs. Shively left Silver Canyon Tuesday for Spring Valley in a wagon with her three children. While going down the steep bank of a creek in the valley she attempted to put on the brake, but missing it, fell out and was run over. This frightened the team, which ran away. The oldest children jumped out at different times and were separated. Mable, who is about three years old, it is thought, was thrown out. Search was immediately made for the children and all found, except the last named, on the day of the accident. The search was renewed Wednesday, and Mr. Odgers, who secured the services of a numb22er of Indians, succeeded in finding her dead body fifteen miles from where the horses started. Her injuries being slight, it is thought she died from fright or exhaustion. Mrs. Shively was seriously injured by being run over. --Ward Reflex.

Mrs. Elizabeth Shiveley, at Ogden, Utah, Tuesday, April 10, 1900 at 1:30 in the morning.

Her funeral took place from the home of her sister, Mrs. Pierce, in Ogden, Thursday the 12th.

She leaves a husband and two children---Jessie, (Mrs. Alexander Penrod of Ogden) and Delbert, now living in Bruneau Valley, Nevada. She had been a sufferer for years and her death resulted from cancer. SInce October last she has been in Ogden for treatment, though since 1887 the family lived in Nevada, mostly in Elko. On Christmas Day of '87 she and her husband united with the Elko Presbyterian Church. She died in its communion after years of hard and faithful service for the Master, whom she devotedly loved, and whose work she never tired of doing. The church and society have missed her faithful and cheerful help from the first, but she united in service for the Master wherever her lot was cast.

Her family and many friends feel keenly their loss in her going. But when they realize that her sorrows and sufferings are past, and that she lives where all tears are wiped away, they would not recall her tired and afflicted body back to earth, even if they could. Her husband was for years a faithful and honored elder in the session of the Elko church, and in everything she was his trusted helpmate. Her faith in God was firm and constant, enabling her to set a good example to her children, who have felt safe in following here steps, as she walked near the Christ, and now, that she is gone, her children rise up and call her blessed, as so often they did in her lifetime.

With a host of other friends, the present Pastor of the Elko church, desires to offer to the family all christian sympathy and every Christly help. May the Lord bless thee and keep thee and give thee peace.       J. A. M.

Mr. A. P. Shively

A letter from Alex Penrod, dated at Malheur, Oregon, October 26th, brings the news of the death of Mr. A. P. Shively, a former resident of Elko, on the 23d of this month from cancer of the throat after suffering nearly three years from that terrible disease. During that time he tried physicians in California and other states, but received no aid. His wife died at Ogden May 10, 1900, of cancer.

Mr. Shively was born in Steubenville, Ohio, May 4, 1839. He came west residing in Nevada most of the time until five years ago. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. D. Penrod. A son, Bert Shively, of Winnemucca  and Mrs. Penrod of Malheur, Oregon, survive him.

Most of the old timers of Elko will remember, Mr. Shively. He lived here several years and was highly respected by everybody. His children, Bert and Jessie, now Mrs. Penrod, attended school here. In his death, Oregon, has lost a good citizen and the surviving children a loving father. TO them, we tender the sincere sympathy of their Elko friends.

John Richard Shively was born 21-Jan-1853 in Jefferson County, OH and died 4-Dec-1935. He was the son of Jacob Shively (1827-1897) and Isabella Reed. Mr. And Mrs. John R. Shively Visit Former Home After Absence Of Twenty Years

Mr. and Mrs. John R. Shively, of Holly, Colo., parents of Mrs. Warren T. Martin, of east Tipton, are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Martin, at whose home they will celebrate their Golden Wedding at a family reunion to be held Sunday, August 23. Mr. and Mrs. Shively are the parents of seven daughters and one son, all living.

All of the children will be present at the coming happy event: John R. Shively, Jr., Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mrs. Lloyd Day and son William, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Foster and son, Shively Kent, of Kearney, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. George Beecher and daughter, Georgia, of Pueblo, Colorado; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley M. Chase and two children, of North Girard, Pa.; Mrs. S. Malin, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur G. Baker and daughter, of Jefferson City.

During the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Shively in the Tipton community many years ago, Mr. Shively engaged in farming and handling stock. They belong to prominent pioneer families. Their Golden Wedding date is looked forward to by their children, other kindred and friends, with bright anticipation as one of the happiest periods of their lives, and no doubt, it will be.

The Martin Home, Sunday, Scene Of A Happy Gathering Honoring Mrs. Martin's Parents

Rarely has a more enjoyable social event occurred in this or any other community than was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. John Shively which took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Martin on Sunday last week. A somewhat romantic feature of the marriage of these then young people may with propriety be related here. The long and disastrous drouth of 1881, which for length of duration and serious consequences in this locality had ended, exceeding the one recently endured, and seemingly the bung had been pulled out of the water barrel. Both parties were living in Howard county. On the day fixed for the wedding the groom arrived on horseback leading a horse for his bridge. Because of the continuous rain no other method of traveling was to be thought of, and of course the wedding was not to be deferred. The couple set off for a preacher, but the rain began and the creek began to rise, and instead of proceeding to the preacher's home they found a Justice of the Peace convenient and sitting on their horses with the rain coming down, they plighted their troth.

As gloomy as the beginning of this marriage appears to be, no one who saw the bright, handsome, gracious daughters, which with one son together with numerous grandchildren constitute the fruits of it, will question its success.

Only a few intimate friends, outside of relatives were present. Mr. and Mrs. Shively lived for several years in this vicinity and won the esteem of the entire community.

A higher testimonial of the love an esteem with which Mr. and Mrs. Shively are held by their daughters could hardly be thought of than is furnished in the fact that all of them were present, coming from as far west as California, and as far east as Pennsylvania,

The sumptious dinner served could scarcely be surpassed. And what an abundance. Old ham, fried chicken, delicious pies and cakes, attractive salads, oh well, think of everything you can that's good, and seemingly it was there to tempt the palate.

John Shively Dies--Was Native Of Ohio

Was Extensive Land Owner And Stock Farmer -- Had Retired Several Years Ago

The death Wednesday morning at four o'clock of John Richard Shively, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Warren T. Martin, three miles northeast of Tipton, removes one of the familiar and early-day residents of this community. Had he lived until January 21st, next month, he would have been 82 years old. Mr. Shively's death was caused from uremic poisoning.

Born in Ohio, Mr. Shively came to Missouri with his parents, Jacob and Isabel Shively, locating near Glasgow. He was the eldest of a family of twelve children. On October 12, 1881 he married Miss Nevada Ford, the marriage occurring in Chariton county. Mr. and Mrs. Shively located north of Tipton, where they owned and operated, on an extensive scale, a large, well-improved farm. Mr. Shively was one of the well-known feeders of the community.

Mr. and Mrs. Shively reared a fine family of ten children, two of whom died in infancy. Besides the widow the seven daughters and one son surviving are: Mrs. Warren T. Martin, Tipton; John Shively, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Mrs. Stanley Chase, North Girard, Pa.; Mrs. Clarence Foster, Carnie, Nebr.; Mrs. Lloyd Day, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs. Arthur Baker, Jefferson CIty; Miss Lula Shively, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. George Beecher, Hinkley, Calif.

Four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Shively celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, a memorable event in the lives of this highly respected couple.

Mr. Shively was noted for his fair dealing and for fine temperment his life being one of usefulness.

Funeral arrangements at this time are incomplete awaiting the arrival of the children.

Mrs. John Shively Died At Her Home

Illness From Complications For Over A Year Claims Life Of Tipton Lady

The passing on Monday, June 29, 1936 of Mrs. John Shively, 79 years of age, removes a well-known Tipton lady. She had been ill for a year or more of complications and was only seriously ill a few weeks prior to her passing.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Tuesday afternoon Rev. G. M. Pierce officiating. The music consisted of a solo by Miss Thelma Martin and a duet by Miss Martin and Miss Helen Conn, Miss Mary Frances Collier accompanying at the piano.

Interment was in the Odd Fellows cemetery. The casket bearers were John Springer, Charles Robertson, A. M. Fry, Gregory Faherty, J. T. Renshaw, A. L. Collier.

Before her marriage to John Shively on October 13, 1881 Mrs. Shively was Miss Nevada Ford, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Ford. She was born near Tipton May 3, 1857, and spent the greater part of her life in this community.

Five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Shively celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in Tipton. Mr. Shively, a veteran Tipton stockman, passed away in Tipton last December 4th.

Surviving are the following children, Mrs. Warren T. Martin of Tipton; Mrs. S. M. Chase, of North Girard, Pennsylvania; John Shively, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mrs. C. A. Foster, of Kearney, Nebraska; Mrs. L. H. Day, fo Denver, Colorado; Mrs. A. G. Baker, of Jefferson City; Mrs. Lula Malin, of Los Angeles, California and Mrs. George M. Beecher, of Kramer, California. Two children passed away in infancy.

Mrs. Shively was an excellent Christian lady. She was kindly and gracious in her every deed and her passing is mourned by a legion of friends,

Richard O. Shively From Jefferson County, Ohio to Linn County, Iowa

Richard O. Shively was born on 22-Sep-1870 in Jefferson County, OH and died on 29-Jul-1949 in Linn County, IA.   He was the son of George W. Shively (born 7-Aug-1844, died 1-Jul-1922) and Margaret Brindley (died 27-Mar-1919).  George W. Shively was the son of Richard Shively and his second wife, Jane Smith.  Richard Shively was the son of John Shively and Nancy Hall.  Richard O. Shively was married to Bertha Leora Hanna in Linn County, IA on 22-Jan-1896.  Bertha was the daughter of Elizabeth Hamilton Lacey and her 2nd husband Matthew Hanna. Bertha was born on 23-Jun-1874 in Wayne County, OH and died 4-Oct-1938.

Listed on the 1880 Warren Township, Jefferson County, OH census is the family of George Shively age 36, wife Margaret, son Richard age 9, son Louis age 8, daughter Ida age 5 and son Henry age 2.  Located on the 1900 Linn County, IA census are Richard Shively born Sep-1870 age 29, wife Bertha L. born Jun-1874 age 25 and daughter Hazel A. born Dec-1896 age 3.  On the 1910 Marion City, Marion Township, Linn County, IA census is the family of Richard O. Shively age 39, wife Bertha L. age 35, daughter Hazel A. age 13, son Frank W. age 9, son Robert W. age 6 and son Melvin M. age 6 months. On the 1930 Marion City, Marion Township, Linn County, IA census is the household of Richard O. Shively age 58, wife Bertha age 55, son Robert age 26 and son Melvin age 20.

R. O. Shively Is Dead; Funeral at 2:30 Sunday

R. O. Shively, 78, of 2534 Fifth avenue, Marion, a retired Milwaukee railway employe, died at 3:17 a.m. Friday in a Cedar Rapids  hospital following a short illness.

Mr. Shively was born in Ohio, Sept. 22, 1870. He went to Central City in 1892 and was married there Jan. 22, 1896, to Bertha L. Hanna. Mr. and Mrs. Shively moved to Marion in 1903. Mrs. Shively died Oct. 4, 1938. Mr. Shively retired in 1937. He was a member of the Central City Christian church and of Unit 29, Brotherhood of Retired and Veteran Railway Employes.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Sheldon of Asbury Park, N. J.; three sons, Frank of Milwaukee, Robert of Cedar Rapids and Melvin Shively of Chicago; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Plummer and Lewis Shively, and two sisters, Mrs. Martha Wilson and Mrs. Nora Kneubuhl, all of Columbus, Ohio.

Services will be conducted at the Yocom chapel at 2:30 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. C. V. R. DeJong. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.

Bertha Leora Hanna Shively

Services Today For Mrs. Bertha Shively

Death came early Tuesday morning to Mrs. Bertha Leora Shively at the family residence, 2534 Fifth avenue, Marion, her home for 35 years. The end came after a two years illness. She was born June 23, 1874 at Bevan, Wayne county, Ohio, the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Hamilton Hanna. In 1881 the family moved to Hayes Center, Nebr., and ten years later came to Central City, Iowa, where on January 22, 1896, she was married to Richard O. Shively who survives, together with their four children, Mrs. Hazel Sheldon of Chicago and Frank W., of Milwaukee, Robert W. of Perry, and Melvin M. of Chicago.

Other surviving relatives are a brother, H. J. Lacey of Culbertson, Nebr., and three grandchildren, Jeanne Sheldon of Chicago; Betty Shively of Milwaukee and Donald Chase Shively of Perry. Mrs. Shively was a grand-niece of Senator Mark Hanna of Ohio. She held her membership in the Christian church at Central City.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Yocum chapel, in charge of the Rev. C. V. R. DeJong, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Out of respect for Mrs. Shively's wishes, her body will be cremated and her ashes interred in the family lot in Oak Shade cemetery.

Obituary Of Mrs. E. Jobes

Elizabeth Hamilton was born in Springville, Jefferson county, Ohio, in 1830, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Shively of this city, April 2, 1912, being 82 years of age. She was married three times, her husbands being Mr. Amos Lacey, Mr. Matthew Hanna, and Mr. Kerby Jobes, all of whom are deceased. Her family consists of seven surviving children, six by her first husband and one by her second husband. Mrs. Jobes was a woman of strong personality, a great worker, a good mother, and a friend to all who needed her. She was a member of the Methodist church and did the best she could to help humanity. She came from Central City to Marion about four years ago, and made her home here ever since. The funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Shively, on Fifth avenue, and were conducted on Thursday afternoon by Rev. S. R. Beatty, pastor of the Methodist church, interment being made in Oak Shade cemetery.

William Wells Shively And Geneva Kimble Who Lived In Belmont County And Jefferson County, Ohio

William Wells Shively was born 13-Feb-1903 in Rush Run, Belmont County, OH and died 14-Sep-1965 in Martins Ferry Hospital, Belmont County, OH. He was the son of William Henry Shively and Lula Wells. RAYLAND -- William Wells Shively, 62, of RD 2, Rayland, died Tuesday in Martins Ferry Hospital. Mr. Shively was a retired miner and township employe.

He leaves his widow; Mrs. Geneva Kimber Shively; four sons, William Shively of Bellaire, Wayne Shively of Glen Robbins, Henry Shively of Portsmouth, Va., and Bruce Shively of Yorkville; two daughters, Mrs. John Skatula of Dillonvale and Mrs. Gene Kropka of  Glen Robbins;  three stepsons, Merrick Smith of Glen Robbins, Rowland Smith of Mt. Pleasant and Robert Smith of Seattle, Wash.; 24 grandchildren, and a brother, Henry Shively of Steubenville.

TILTONSVILLE -- Mrs. Geneva Kimble Shively, 60, of 608 1/2 Maple Ave., died today at 7:45 a.m. in Martins Ferry Hospital.

She leaves seven sons, WIlliam Tex Shively of Bridgeport, Bruce Shively of Yorkville, Wayne Shively of Bellaire, Henry Shively of Porthsmouth, Va., Merrick Smith of Martins Ferry, Rowland Smith of Mt. Pleasant and Robert Smith of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. John Skatuala of Dillonvale and Mrs. Gene Cropka of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Vern Kimble of Yorkville; 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

One of the most pleasant days of our sojourn in this section was spent last Sunday at Mr. Jacob Shively’s. Mrs. Shively celebrated her 55^th birthday and her son, George, his 25^th, both being on the same day. Mrs. Shively, assisted by her daughters, Mrs. Grisham, and Misses Maggie and Josephine, gave us one of the finest dinners it was ever our lot to assist in devouring. Nothing fine, but everything good, as only Mrs. S. knows how to prepare. A few of the neighbors were invited, among them James Cuddy and daughter, Miss Dora Wilhoit, Chris Noll and wife and daughter, James Robinson and wife, Lou Wells, wife and sister, Wm. Latham and family, John Shively, son and brother; Thos. Shively, son and brother; Lou Wright, brother-in-law, and wife. Plenty of refreshments of all kinds were in abundances, especially in the shape of wit and humor, furnished by John Goll, whom we forgot to mention above. We think John was the busiest one in attendance, flying around like a kite without a caudal appendage, but after dinner he seemed to have gotten bullast enough to hold him level and he sailed off nicely. Messrs. Binks and Walcott, of Lewis’ Mill, were in attendance also. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves to their utmost capacity. Mr. Wilkerson (the never to be forgotten Pat) being so overcome with excitement in anticipation of such a good time, had to give up to Miss Chile, to whom he devoted his entire attention to the great discomforture of Miss Maggie.  Mr. Noll got so full of celebration that he has been confined to his room ever since – 46 glasses will confine most any one.

Obituary

Mrs. Isabelle Shively, born June 21—1830, died at the home of her son, George Shively, June 17—1911. She was a native of Ohio, and her maiden name Isabelle Reid. Married to Jacob Shively at Jefferson County Ohio, December 23, 1852 coming to Missouri in May 1867 and living in Howard County until 1880, moving to Chariton county in that year. Her husband Jacob Shively died in 1898 and since that time she lived with her son Lou until his death two years ago, after which she made her home with other children. Grandma Shively died a member of the Helna church, Methodist, tho in early life was converted and became a member of the Campbellite church at her girlhood home. She was the mother of six boys and six girls, eight of whom survive her.  Her remains were laid to final rest in the cemetary at Glasgow, funeral services having been conducted at the residence of her son George Shively by Rev. J. A. Snarr.

Daniel R Shively/Maud M Furley Marriage

Daniel Royal Shively was born on 30-Jan-1873 (Jefferson County, OH Birth Register Volume 1, 1867-1879). He was the son of John Shively And Sarah Jane "Jennie" Wolf. (The Jefferson County, OH marriage record lists John Shively and Sarah Ann Wolf married 2-Oct-1857. In other records she is listed as Sarah Jane or "Jennie"). Daniel Royal Shively was married 1st to Maud M Furley on 20-Nov-1897 in Beaverhead County, Montana. Maud Furley was born 18-Aug-1878 and died 10-Jun-1916, buried Mountain View Cemetery, Park County, Montana. Daniel R Shively was married 2nd to Nannie E. Carter on 14-May-1911 in Ada County, Idaho.  Daniel R. Shively died 21-Dec-1937 and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Los Angeles County, California.

Listed on the 1870 Saline Township, Jefferson County, OH census is the household of John Shively age 36, wife Jenny age 33, son William age 13, son Edward age 12, son Charles age 9 and daughter Clara N age 7.  Listed on the 1880 Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah census is the household of John Shively age 43, wife Sarah J age 43, son Charles E age 19, daughter Clara N age 17 and son Daniel R age 8. On the 1900 Yellowstone County, Wyoming census is the family of Dan R Shively born 30-Jan-1872 age 28 and wife Maud M born 8-Aug-1878. 

Daniel R Shively could not be located on the 1910  census records.  Maud Furley Shively is listed in the household of her parents on the 1910 Sweet Grass County, Montana. Listed are Joseph B. Furley age 53, his second wife Eva D age 42 and daughter Maude Chively age 31 listed as married 12 years and no children.  Maud is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery and the headstone names her as Maud Furley not Shively.  At the time of her death in 1916 Daniel had been married 5 years to Nannie E. Carter.

Listed on the 1924 Los Angeles City Precinct No. 33 list of registered voters are the names of Dan R Shively employed as a shovel fireman and Mrs. Nannie E Shively employed in millinery.  Listed on the 1930 Los Angeles City Precinct No. 1775 list of registered voters are the names of Dan R Shively and Mrs. Nannie E. Shively.

Shively who would be the uncle of Daniel R Shively.  John Shively and William B. Shively were the sons of Daniel Shively and Elizabeth Ream from Jefferson County, OH.

Harvey Hefelbower Shively, From Cumberland County And Dauphin County, Pennsylvania

Harvey Hefelbower Shively was born in March 1871 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.  He was the son of Simon Shively (born 14-Apr-1833 died 10-Oct-1896) and Rosanna Hefelbower (born 13-Sep-1829 died 17-Dec-1907).  Simon Shively was the son of David Shibley (Shively) who was born 30-Oct-1805 Perry County, PA died 30-Mar-1876 Cumberland County, PA and wife Elizabeth Clay who was born 17-Aug-1805 died 3-Sep-1854.  

The family of Simon and Rosanna Shively are listed on the 1880 Cumberland County, Newville Borough, PA census.  In the household are Simon age 47, wife Rosana age 50, daughter Florence Bell age 16, son William David age 14, daughter Laura Katherine age 13, son Harvey H age 8.  Florence Shively was married 23-Oct-1888 to John Milton Landis.  William Shively was married in May-1899 to Salina Susanne Hess.  Laura was married in 1897 to Amagiah L. Weaver.

The marriage for Harvey H. Shively and Ella R. Michael is located in Dauphin County, PA Marriage License Docket Volume 2 M, 1906.  They were married on 25-June-1906.  Harvey was 35 years old, parents Simon and Rosa, his 1st marriage, and occupation of carpenter.  Ella was 34 years old,  her 2nd marriage with her previous husband having died "6 years ago".    Their marriage was recorded in The Patriot, Harrisburg, PA, Wednesday, June 27, 1906, Page 6, Column 4:

Harvey Shively and Miss Ella R. Michael, both of this city, were married on Monday evening at the parsonage of Salem Reformed Church by Rev. Ellis N. Kremer, pastor.  They left shortly after the ceremony on a trip to Philadelphia, New York and Buffalo and on their return will reside in this city.

Searching For Brother Lost For Five Years

William D. Shively of Longsdorf whose brother has been lost for five years, yesterday addressed an appeal to THE PATRIOT asking that he be given aid in his search.  His brother is Harvey H. Shively.  He was last heard from in Harrisburg about five years ago.  He was working here then as a carpenter.

Seek Lost Brother

A "lost" brother, Harvey H. Shively, has been sought for over a year without success by relatives.  His brother, William D. Shively, who died on January 4 and was buried last Friday had long searched him.  William Shively lived in Dickinson and was ill only two hours before he died.  Other survivors are his wife and a son, Lester; and two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Landis,  of Brooklyn, and Mrs. A. L. Weaver, of Newville.

In Steelton, Dauphin County, PA in December 1915 Nicolo Kotur and Joso Bakic got into an argument.  Joso Bakic was found dead outside of the boarding house where they lived.   There are numerous articles in The Patriot relating to this murder.   In The Patriot, Harrisburg, PA, Tuesday, February 15, 1916, Page 1, Column 4  an article appeared that lists Harvey Shively as being present at the trial.  Not only was he present but as the article states he was pulled from being a spectator to being a member of the jury.  The article records:

At this point court adjourned.

Two spectators who entered the court room early yesterday afternoon did not get home last night.  They are Harvey H. Shively and William Metzgar, who were locked up with the rest of the jurors as the “guests” of Sheriff Caldwell.  They were picked from the audience after the regular panel had been exhausted. The other ten on the Kotur jury are:  John M. Madden, Millersburg, foreman; Joseph G. Beckwith, Seventh ward, city; George E. Eldridge, Ninth ward, city; Charles K. Hess, First ward, city; Henry W. Snyder, Ninth ward, city; Joseph Lutz, Thirteenth ward, city; Walter Liebfield, Derry township; Alpha Fraut, Steelton; John Dubbs, Hershey; and A. B. Gardner, city.

From the following article it is recorded that Harvey Shively and  fellow jurors found Nicholo Kotur guilty of first degree murder:

Guilty Of Murder In First Degree

Kotur, Angered At Verdict Of Jury, Becomes Sarcastic In Remarks

Nicholo Kotur will be the first person from Dauphin county to die in the electric chair, unless means can be found by his lawyers to stay the penalty for murder in the first degree, the verdict returned by a jury late yesterday afternoon after little more than an hour’s deliberation.  He was convicted of killing Joso Bakic, a fellow-countryman, in a Steelton boarding house last December 22.

As the jurors, one by one, solemnly pronounced the word “guilty” the first trace of emotion he has shown since his arrest stirred in Kotur.  The three days’ trial was utterly devoid of anything dramatic on his part, and the impression grew that he was ignorant of English.  But at its conclusion the doomed man sprang to his feet.

Hot With Anger

“Thank you, Mr. Jurors,” he cried in accents that rang clearly over a tense courtroom.

His voice vibrated and his face colored with hot passion.  Hs head dipped quickly in the mockery of a bow.

Under the scorn and hatred blazing in his narrow eyes a few jurors turned red.  Then he strode toward (continued on Page 12, Column 6)  the door was was led back to his cell across the alley, composed once more.  On his way he remarked simply to Deputy Sheriff Hoffman: “Good-bye, everybody.  I go chair all right, all for notting.”

Nicholo Kotur was given a second trial and in December 16, 1916 he was found guilty once more.  From The Patriot, Harrisburg, PA, Tuesday,  October 2, 1917, Page 5, Column 3:

Nicolo Kotur, convicted of the murder of Joso Bakic at Steelton on Christmas 1915, yesterday paid the penalty in the electric chair at the Center County Penitentiary.  He was electrocuted at 7:10 a.m.

Could it be that Harvey Shively being involved in this trial had something to do with the fact that he seems to have "been lost" to his family?  Harvey and wife Ella are listed on the 1910 Dauphin County, PA, city of Harrisburg census. Harvey or Ella could not be located on the 1920 census records. It appears that Harvey H. Shively may have relocated to Jefferson County, OH.  Located on the 1930 Jefferson County, Ohio, Village of Toronto, Island Creek Township, 405 Main Street is an entry for Harvey H Shively, age 50, widowed, occupation Carpenter, Furniture and in the household is John Armour, a roomer, age 61, single, occupation as a Laborer for a steel mill.  There is an Ohio death certificate for a Harvey Shively, age 66, who died in Jefferson County, Ohio on 1-July-1937.  He is listed as living in the "Jefferson County Home".  The informant for the information on the death certificate was L. W. Adrian, Superintendent of the Jefferson County Home.  Harvey's birth information and parents were listed as unknown.  

Daniel Shively, Son Of Peter Shively, Who Lived In Tuscarawas County, Ohio And Ionia County, Michigan

Daniel Shively who lives in the state of California contacted some of the Shively researchers seeking to find other Shively's interested in the family history of Daniel Shively who was the son of Peter Shively.  If you descend from this Shively line and are interested in sharing information with Daniel please leave a comment on this blog.

Located on the 1850 Tuscarawas County, Ohio census record is the family of Peter Shively in Sandy Township.  Listed in the household are Peter Shively age 39, wife Sarah, daughter Elizabeth age 21, son William age 19, daughter Margarett A age 18, daughter Mary J age 14, son Daniel age 12 and son Peter age 9.    By 1860 Peter and family have moved to Ionia County, Michigan where they are located on the census record.       The death certificate for son Daniel Shively lists his parents as Peter Shively and Sarah Miller.  There is a marriage certificate in Tuscarawas County for Peter Shevely and Sarah Foster dated 10-April-1828.  It would be interesting if someone could comment about these marriage records.  Is it possible these early Tuscarawas marriage records were recopied at a later date?  The reason is that the handwriting appears to be the style of early 1900's rather than the style of writing from the early 1800's.  If this occurred it might be possible that in transcribing Sarah's last name was recorded incorrectly.   The information on the death certificate was a William Shively who it is believed was Daniel Shively's son. One would think that he would know the name of his grandmother Sarah Shively.

From the Ohio death certificate Daniel Shively is recorded born 16-Dec-1838.  He died 4-June-1913 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. His wife was Phoebe Ann. Daniel and Phoebe Ann are listed on the 1880 Ionia County, Michigan census with son William age 9.  Another son of Daniel and Phoebe was Frank Shively born 17-Oct-1882 in Ionia County, Michigan and died 28-Sep-1941 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Frank married Elizabeth (Bessie) Murphy who was born 29-Nov-1883 in Rockford, Winnebago County, IL died 7-Dec-1963 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.

Frank Shively Loses His Father And Daughter By Death At Home In Toledo, O.

Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shively, of Toledo, O., formerly of Rockford, have been informed of the death of their little daughter Jane, which occurred last Saturday.  Mr. Shively’s father died a week ago Wednesday, and his funeral was held on the day the grandchild passed away.  The baby, who was twenty months old, was buried on Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shively moved to Toledo from Rockford about a year ago.

Announcement has been made of the coming wedding of Mr. Frank Shively of Lansing, Mich., and Miss Bessie Murphy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Murphy of this city.  The bride is a popular young lady and a wide circle of friends will extend advance congratulations on the coming event.

Mr. Shively has made him home in Rockford since the beginning of the current year and is a popular and worthy young man.

Murphy-Shively Wedding

Miss Bessie Murphy and Frank Shively were married last evening at St. Mary’s parsonage, the ceremony being performed at 8 o’clock by Rev. Fr. McMahon.  After the wedding service the bridal couple were tendered a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thro.  Mr. and Mrs. Shively will be at home at Lansing, Mich., next month.

It would be interesting to know if the Daniel Shively age 83 and wife Sarah Shively age 82 and James Shively age 41 who are listed on the 1850 Tuscarawas County, Ohio census in the household of John J. Wolf are related to Peter Shively.   Is it possible they are the parents of Peter Shively?      It appears that by 1860 Daniel Shively has passed away because James Shively and Sarah are located on the 1860 Jefferson County, Ohio census record.  Is it possible this Shively line descends from Daniel Shively who came to America in 1749?  This immigrant Daniel Shively was born 26-May-1709 in Waldenberg(Switzerland) and died 1763 in Frederick County, VA.  It is known that this Daniel had a son Daniel Shively baptized 29-Jan-1730 who died in Jefferson County, OH in 1808.  Is it possible the Daniel Shively in 1850 in Tuscarawas County(the one who was 83) was the son of the Daniel Shively who was baptized 1730?
