This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Charles Willard Shively And Florence F. Barclay From Vinton County, Ohio To California

Charles Willard Shively was born on 25-Nov-1865 in Vinton County, OH and died 8-Jul-1948 in Los Angeles County, CA. Charles married Flora F. Barclay on 23-Aug-1887 in McLean County, IL. Flora was born on 1-Mar-1864 in MO and died 20-Dec-1943 in San Francisco, CA.  Charles was the son of John Shively (1837-1909) and Ellen (Helen) Remy (Ramey) (1846-1936). (For more information on John Shively see the Shively blog articles written on March 5, 2011 and February 4, 2017). Flora Barclay was the daughter of William and Mary J. Barclay. 

Listed on the 1880 Jackson Township,, Vinton County, OH census is the family of John Shively age 33, wife Hannah age 34, daughter Sarah F. age 15, son Charles W. age 14, daughter Ettie A. age 11, daughter Lucy M. age 9, son Homer C. age 7 and mother-in-law Sarah Smith age 67. Listed on the 1900 Oklahoma County, OK census is the household of Charles Shively born Nov-1865 age 34 a salesman in a shoe store), wife Flora born Mar-1864 age 36, married 13 years with 4 children born and 4 living, daughter Mamie born Jul-1888 age 11, son Harold born Mar-1890 age 10, son Willie born Feb-1892 age 8 and daughter Ethel born Feb-1894 age 6. Listed on the 1910 Seattle City, King County, WA census is Charles W. Shively age 45 a manager of a retail shoe store, wife Flora F. age 46, daughter Mamie E. age 21, son Harold C. age 20, son William J. age 18, daughter Ethel E. age 16 and mother-in-law Mary J. Barclay age 77. Listed on the 1920 Seattle City, King County, WA census is Charles W. Shively age 53 a salesman as a shoe store selling service, wife Flora age 55, son John W. age 28, daughter Mary E. age 30. Listed on the 1930 Los Angeles County, CA census is the household of Chas W. Shively age 65 an advertiser for retail stores and wife Flora age 66. On the 1940 San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA census is Charles W. Shively age 74 and wife Florence F. age 76.

A Notable Wedding Near Covel
The wedding of Mr. C. W. Shively and Miss Flora Barclay occurred Tuesday evening at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Barclay. Mr. Barclay is a wealthy farmer living two miles west of Covel. The mystic words were pronounced by Rev. H. Vanderwert, formerly of Stanford, now of Centralia, MO. After the many congratulations they were all summoned to the dining-room, where the usual wedding feast was enjoyed by all. Among the many useful and ornamental presents were the following: Full set of china dishes, father and mother of bride; extension table, Barclay brothers; paper holder, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Biggs; silver fruit basket, J. A. Surber and wife; glass fruit basket, J. B. Norris; fruit dish, Grant and Cora Piper; silver butter dish, Katie and Wm. John Shively And Wife Ellen (Hellen) Remy Who Lived In Vinton County, Ohio

John Shively, Jr. was born 3-Oct-1837 and died 4-May-1909 in Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio.  He was the son of John Shively, Sr. and Mary Geer. (For additional information on John and Mary Shively see the March 5, 2011 Shively blog article. John Shively, Sr. may have married 2nd to Mrs. Mahetable Anderson in Vinton County, Ohio in June-1856. She was the widow of John Anderson). John Shively, Jr. was married to Ellen Remy in Vinton County, Ohio on 7-Aug-1862. Ellen (Hellen) Remy was the daughter of John Remy and Milberry Redfearn. John Remy died 27-Apr-1850.  Milberry married 2nd to David Jolley in Vinton County on 30-Sep-1852. Milberry married 3rd to John Roach in Vinton County on 25-Aug-1863.

Listed on the 1860 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio census is the household of John Shively age 60, wife Mahetable age 48, son John age 22, Angeline Johnson age 22 and Thomas L. Anderson age 15. Listed on the 1870 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio census is the household of John Shively age 70, wife Mary age 66, domestic servant Sarah Reddick age 27 and domestic servant Angeline Johnston age 30.  John Shively, Jr. is listed on the 1870 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio census as John Shively age 32, wife Ellen age 22, daughter Sarah F. age 5, son Charles W. age 4, and daughter Hettie A. age 1.  Listed on the 1880 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio is the household of John Shively age 33, wife Hannah age 34, daughter Sarah F. age 15, son Charles W. age 14, daughter Ettie A. age 11, daughter Lucy M. age 9, son Homer C. age 7 and mother-in-law Sarah Smith age 67.  Located on the 1900 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio census is the household of John Shively born Oct-1837 age 62 married 38 years, wife Hellen born Feb-1846 age 53 married 38 years 7 children born and 7 are living, daughter Lucy born Feb-1871 age 29, daughter Blanche born Oct-1883 age 16 and daughter Lizzie born Oct-1880 age 19. 

It is not known why on the 1880 census the wife of John Shively, Jr. is listed as Hannah and the mother-in-law is listed as Sarah Smith.  From the 1900 census John Shively, Jr. is listed with his wife Ellen (Hellen) Remy which is consistent with the 1870 census record. Also from the 1900 census information John and Ellen Shively are listed as being married 38 years which is consistent with their marriage date of 1862. On the 1900 census Ellen states she has born 7 children with all 7 living. From the census records the 7 children of John and Ellen Shively were Sarah F., Charles W., Hettie A., Lucy M., Homer C., Lizzie and Blanche. The mother of Ellen Remy was Milberry Redfearn Remy Jolley Roach who died 25-Mar-1893 and is buried in Wyckoff Cemetery in Vinton County, Ohio.

The children of John Shively, Jr. and Ellen Remy were: 1) Sarah Francis who married Edward Andris 2) Charles Willard 3) Ettie Alice who married Horatio Seymour Jordan 4) Lucy May who married Grant Sniff 5) Homer Clayton who married Nellie F. Peacock 6) Lizzie who married Herschel Wolf and 7) Blanche who married Guy A. Pickens.
