Mary Margaret Shively was  born on 18-Apr-1858 in Ohio and died 27-Dec-1930 in Vernon County, MO.  She was the daughter of George Shively (1820-1858)  and Nancy Vanderford (15-Aug-1832 to 3-Nov-1867). After the death of her parents Mary Margaret Shively lived in the household of her grandfather, William Vanderford, and his second wife Julia A. Belvington. (Williams first wife and mother of Nancy Vanderford was Mary Margaret McGee).  Mary Margaret Shively was married in Vinton County, OH on 11-Feb-1885  (Vinton County, OH Marriage Book Volume 4, Page 368) to Charles F. Johnson. Charles F. Johnson was born Mar-1864 and died 26-Nov-1912. Charles and Mary Johnson are buried in the El Dorado Springs Cemetery in El Dorado, Cedar County, MO. Charles F. Johnson and Mary Margaret Shively were the parents of at least two children: Cora Althea Johnson and George Fenton Johnson.

Located on the 1860 Jackson Township, Vinton County, OH census is the household of Nancy Shively age 28, daughter Sarah J. age 10, son William age 9, son Henry age 7, son Westley age 4 and daughter Mary M. age 2.  Listed on the 1870 Jackson Township, Vinton County, OH census is the family of William Vanderford age 59, wife Julia age 43, grandchild William Shively age 19 and grandchild Mary M. Shively age 12.  On the 1880 Jackson Township, Vinton County, OH census is Wm. Vanderford age 69, wife Julia A. age 52, grandson James M. age 10 and granddaughter Mary M. Shively age 22.  On the 1900 Elkhart Township, Bates County, MO census is the family of Charles F. Johnson born Mar-1854 age 46, wife Mary M. born Apr-1858 age 42 married 16 years having born 2 children with 2 children living, daughter Cora A. born Jul-1886 age 13 and son George F. born Jul-1890 age 9.  On the 1910 West Spedwell Township, St. Clair County, MO census are Charles F. Johnson age 56, wife Mary M. age 52 and son George F. age 19.

Death Of Mary M. Johnson

Mary Margaret Shively was born April 18, 1858, in Ohio, and departed this life at Nevada, Mo., Dec. 27, 1930, aged 72 years. She was married to Charles F. Johnson, Feb. 11, 1885, who preceded her in death 18 years ago. To this union were born two children, a daughter, Mrs. Cora Harris of Nevada, and a son, George F. Johnson, who preceded her in death three years ago. Early in life Mrs. Johnson became a Christian and united with the Baptist church. She was a devoted Christian and was loved by all who knew her. She was ever faithful to her church and attended services as long as health permitted.

She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter and a grandson, Oren Harris, and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in the Baptist church at El Dorado Springs, Rev. L. L. Tucker of Stockton conducting the service. Burial was in the El Dorado cemetery beside her husband.

A Notable Wedding Near Covel

The wedding of Mr. C. W. Shively and Miss Flora Barclay occurred Tuesday evening at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Barclay. Mr. Barclay is a wealthy farmer living two miles west of Covel. The mystic words were pronounced by Rev. H. Vanderwert, formerly of Stanford, now of Centralia, MO. After the many congratulations they were all summoned to the dining-room, where the usual wedding feast was enjoyed by all. (For additional information on John and Mary Shively see the March 5, 2011 Shively blog article. John Shively, Sr. may have married 2nd to Mrs. Mahetable Anderson in Vinton County, Ohio in June-1856. She was the widow of John Anderson). John Shively, Jr. was married to Ellen Remy in Vinton County, Ohio on 7-Aug-1862. Ellen (Hellen) Remy was the daughter of John Remy and Milberry Redfearn. John Remy died 27-Apr-1850.  Milberry married 2nd to David Jolley in Vinton County on 30-Sep-1852. Milberry married 3rd to John Roach in Vinton County on 25-Aug-1863.

It is not known why on the 1880 census the wife of John Shively, Jr. is listed as Hannah and the mother-in-law is listed as Sarah Smith.  From the 1900 census John Shively, Jr. is listed with his wife Ellen (Hellen) Remy which is consistent with the 1870 census record. Also from the 1900 census information John and Ellen Shively are listed as being married 38 years which is consistent with their marriage date of 1862. On the 1900 census Ellen states she has born 7 children with all 7 living. From the census records the 7 children of John and Ellen Shively were Sarah F., Charles W., Hettie A., Lucy M., Homer C., Lizzie and Blanche. The mother of Ellen Remy was Milberry Redfearn Remy Jolley Roach who died 25-Mar-1893 and is buried in Wyckoff Cemetery in Vinton County, Ohio.

Jacob Shively And Wife, Monacka Mary Frey (Fry), Who Lived In Logan, Hocking County, Ohio

Jacob Shively was born 4-Dec-1831 in Germany, married 4-May-1858 in Vinton County, OH (Marriage Vol. 1, Page 135) and died 1-Oct-1903 in Logan, Hocking County, OH. From census records it is recorded that he immigrated to the US in 1857.  He married Monacka "Mary" Frey (Fry) who was born Apr-1841 in Germany. From census records it is recorded she immigrated to the US in 1849.   They are located on the 1860 Madison Township, Vinton County, OH census as Jacob Shively age 29 and wife Mary age 20.  The family of Jacob Shively is listed on the 1880 Logan, Hocking County, OH census and 1900 Logan, Falls Township, Hocking County, OH census record.  Jacob was involved in the community of Logan as there are newspaper articles that indicate he was elected as "sanitary policeman" or street commissioner in Logan.

Mr. Jacob Shively was born in Lanhaim, Walsehite County, Baden, Dec. 4th, in the year, 1831, died Oct. 1, 1903, aged 71 years and 9 months.  He was married in 1858 to Miss Moneca Tray. To this union was born ten children, of which one died in infancy.  The children were all here to attend the funeral, except Charles Shively and Mrs. Kate Spencer.

Birthday Anniversary

Last Saturday Augustus Shively arrived at that point in life to which all young men look forward to with much anxiety and in after years the majority of them regret having reached it, his 21st birthday.  His parents, wishing to remember his advent into the ranks wherein the word "Mr." is prefixed to our names and in anticipation of this suspicious event sent out invitations to a small number of the young gentleman's intimate friends, and among invited guests, being "ye local" and his better half, to come and partake of their hospitality on Saturday evening.  The guests began to gather at the house at early twilight and after passing an hour in social nonsense at 7 o'clock the company were invited into the dining room where we found a great long dining table draped in snowy linen and to use a vulgar phrase, it was loaded down to the hub with one of those old fashioned country suppers such as our mothers used to give us and such a one as only Mother Shively only knows how to prepare, everything and plenty of it, both good and substantial that the inner man might crave; pies, cakes, pastry meats, chicken and piles of floury flakes of snow white bread such as we read about but seldom see and peaches, pears, cherries and other dainties for desert with one of mother's delicious cups of coffee to wash it down.  If any one left the hospitable board without finding plenty to suit his taste it was his own fault.  After eating enough to satisfy us for a week we, with the assembled company repaired to other rooms where the evening was pleasantly spent in music, songs and games.  During the evening festivities liquid refreshments with cake were served; and all went merry as a marriage ball.  The hour for departure arrived all too soon, but as the old saying is, "the best of friends must sometimes part and the bond of friendship cut in twain", the company at 10 o'clock began to disperse wishing the genial young host many pleasant returns of the evening and that he might be spared to live his allotted time, four score years and ten, before being called to a better home.

Shively was born ca.1850 in Hocking County, Ohio and died 10-December-1917 in Washington County, Arkansas.  He was the son of David Shively and Rachel Amy Bell who can be found on the census records of Vinton County, Ohio.  John was married, this being possibly a second marriage, on 23-January-1883 in Caldwell County, Missouri to Addah A Karns. (On the 1910 Washington County, Arkansas census John is listed with Addia as his second marriage, her first). Ada Armenta Karns was born 10-January-1867 in McArthur, Vinton County, Ohio and died 7-August-1956 in Harrisonville, Cass County, Missouri.  She was the daughter of Nicholas Karns and Mary Louise Dennison. Listed on the 1900 Gomer Township, Caldwell County, Missouri census is the household of John Shively born April 1850, wife Adda A born January 1867, son Arthur N born October 1883, son Lawrence D born February 1885, daughter Daisy I born February 1888, daughter Nellie L born May 1894, son John M born May 1896, grandfather James M Dennison born March 1817 and servant Perry Green born November 1873.

Funeral services fro J. W. Shivley, aged 67, who died late Monday night at the Peel place, the family residence north of City Park, were held at the residence Wednesday morning at ten o'clock with the Rev. Ashley Chappell officiating. Interment was made in Evergreen Cemetery.  Bruce Holcomb, Clyde Walters, Dr. J. R. Southworth, C. C. Yarrington, Best Lewis and Art Lewis served as pallbearers.

Mr. Shively and his family had resided here since October, coming here from Harris, where they had lived twelve years.  The deceased was well known all over the county.

Deceased is survived by his widow and seven children, Mrs. Daisy Gaines of Lennox, Iowa; Lawrence, who has been away and unheard from for a few months and Arthur, Nellie, John, William and Clyde, who are at home.

Kimberly, Ida., Sept. 1, 1913.....The home of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Shively has been a regular summer resort for the past two months, the occasion being a family reunion.  Miss Annie D. Holmes of Laurier, Washington, has spent her entire vacation with her sister, Mrs. Shively, while another sister, Mrs. C. I. Wiggins, came later from Canyon City, Texas.  Somewhat later W. C. Cole, a brother, came from Pattonsburg, Missouri, thus completing the family, since the father, Mr. Orin Cole, has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Shively for several years past. For two weeks the family had a merry time together, taking in the sights and enjoying things in general.  Miss Annie D. Holmes returned to her school at Laurier, Washington; Mr. Orin Cole, the father, went to Canyon City, Texas, with his daughter, Mrs. Wiggins, to spend the winter;  W. H. Cole went home to Pattonsburg, Mo., by way of Canyon City, Texas, to assist with the aged father. All guests were greatly pleased with the country and were loathe to leave our fair climate.

Well Known Kimberly Woman Passes To Great Beyond

Mrs. Sarah I. Shively, wife of J. M. Shively, of Kimberly, died at Portland, Oregon, January 3rd, 1914, after a prolonged sickness caused from cancer.  Mrs. Shively had not been well since last summer and this fall went to Spokane, Wash., to consult physicians as to an operation.  The physicians discouraged this, knowing she would never recover from the shock, but told her it was simply a matter of time.  A specialist of that disease was next consulted in Portland, Oregon, but with the same result.

Mr. and Mrs. Shively came to Idaho six years ago and settled on their farm one mile north and two east of Kimberly.  Mrs. Shively leaves, besides her husband, a son, Ora D. Taylor, and his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Aimee D. Holmes of Lurier, Wash., and Mrs. Bell Wiggins of Canyon, Texas; a brother, Harry Cole of Pattonsburg, Mo., and an aged father, Mr. Orin Cole, who until last summer, made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Shively.

Mrs. Shively was buried in Orting, Washington, where she lived in her earlier days.

James Madison Shively was married a third time on 17-February-1916 in Los Angeles, California to Miss Mary Ella Brunson.  The Marriage License states "James Madison Shively a native of Ohio, aged 64 years, resident of Twin Falls, Idaho and Mary Ella Brunson, a native of Illinois, ageed 46 years, resident of Long Beach, County of Los Angeles, California" were married.  Mary Ella Brunson was the daughter of W. S. Brunson and Suan Goble.  The  date of death from the California Death Index for Mary Ella Shively is listed as 5-August-1943 in Los Angeles, California.  Her birth date is listed as 24-September-1865 in Illinois.

     Part of the enjoyment of the hobby of genealogy is finding new information on a family that has not been well documented, sharing the information, receiving additional new information from those with whom the information was shared, and then putting the pieces of the information together. One family for which this applies is the family of John Shively, born 1800 in Virginia, and his wife Mary (maiden name Geer), born 1800 in Pennsylvania.

   The census records are a good source of information starting in 1850 because it was requested that all members of the household be listed.  Prior to 1850 the  head of the household was listed with the number of individuals in age groups enumerated.  The family of John Shively and Mary are located in Ohio on the 1850 Vinton County, Jackson Township census.  In the household are John Shively, age 50 born in VA, wife Mary age 50 born in PA, son Isaac age 24 born in OH, daughter Nancy age 17 born OH, and son John age 12 born in OH.  Also located in Jackson Township are the families of George Shively age 29, wife Nancy age 17, and daughter Sarah J age 5 months; David Shively age 26, wife Amy age 26 and son John W age 2 months; James S Bell age 30, wife Catherine age 23, daughter Catherine age 10, son Oliver age 7, and daughter Mary E age one year.   George Shively, David Shively and Catherine Bell are the married children of John and Mary Shively.  Note that James Bell was married prior to Catherine Shively and this was her first marriage.

     As more people moved west new counties were formed from existing counties in some of the states to help reduce the distance people had to travel to get to the courthouses. The families living in these areas might have never  moved but their names begin to appear in a different county. This may be case for the family of John Shively because Vinton County, Ohio was formed in 1850 from several earlier established counties.  One of the counties that gave up land for Vinton County was Hocking County.  On the 1840 Hocking County, Ohio, Jackson Township is the family of John Shively.  If the information found on the 1850 Vinton County census is compared to the 1840 Hocking County census the following can be notated:  1840 lists John Shively, head of household, male age 40-50; there are 2 males ages 15-20 which would be sons George and David; 1 male age 10-15 which would be son Isaac; 1 male age under 5 which would be son John; 1 female age 40-50 which would be wife Mary; 1 female between 10-15 which would be daughter Catherine; and 1 female between 5-10 which would be daughter Nancy.

     Who were the parents of John Shively, born 1800 in Virginia?  Hopefully future research will be able to answer this question.  There are not too many early Shively families in Virginia but the information available on them is limited. One interesting history on this family was found in “Vinton County Ohio History & Families, Turner Publishing Company, Paducah, Kentucky, 1996, pages 128-129”.  In the history mention is made that John Shively was a famous weaver who came from Holland to Columbiana County before 1800.  More research and documentation is suggested before accepting this into your family genealogy.

     Not all of the family of John and Mary stayed in Ohio.  It is known that their daughter Mary married James Bell and records for them can be found in Coles County, Illinois.  John and Mary’s son, David, had descendants that are located in Caldwell County, Missouri.

    The Locust Grove Cemetery in Vinton County lists several of the family members of John and Mary Shively indicating that not all of the family left Ohio. The names of descendants of John Shively and Mary Geer continue to appear on the census records in Vinton County through 1930. The 1930 census records are the last census records that are currently available.
