His great parents, Daniel Webster Brookhart (born 19-Jul-1861 died 22-Dec-1927) and Etta Young (born 14-Oct-1867 died 17-Feb-1939) (daughter of Simon P. Young and Elnora "Ellen" Bush) lived in Hopewell Township, Mercer County, OH and John W. Shively lived in Hopewell Township.  For more information on John W. John William Shively was born on 24-May-1861 in Mercer County, OH and died 12-Dec-1939 in Mercer County, OH. He was the son of William M. Shively and Sarah E. Carr.  John was married first on 22-Apr-1883 in Mercer County to Sarah Edith Buck. Sarah was born on 29-Aug-1862 and died 18-Sep-1886. John married second in Mercer County on 1-Jan-1890 to Eliza E Crouch. Eliza was born on 18-Mar-1867 and died on 7-Feb-1922.  In reviewing information on John W. Shively it has been discovered that he was married a third time on 19-May-1938 in Mercer County to Manda (Amanda) Piper Young. This was a second marriage for Manda Piper who was married first on 24-Feb-1894 in Mercer County to Harry S. Young. Harry Young was the son of Simon P. Young and Elnora "Ellen" Bush. Harry was born on 15-May-1870 and died 28-Aug-1932 and is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Saints Marys, Auglaize County, OH. 

To show that Etta Young and Harry S. Young were brother and sister their family is found on the 1870 Jefferson Township, Franklin County, OH census listed as Simon Young age 29, wife Ellen age 24, daughter Etta age 2 and son Harry age 1 month.  Listed on the 1880 Violet Township, Fairfield County, OH census are S. P. Young age 40, wife Ellen age 33, daughter Etta age 12, son Harry age 10, daughter Ida age 7, son Earl age 5, and son Samuel J. age 2. 

Etta Young was married to Daniel Webster Brookhart (born 19-Jpul-1861 died 22-Dec-1927). Daniel W. Brookhart and Etta Young were the great grandparents of Bill Rice who submitted to photo above.  Daniel and Etta Brookhart were the parents of his grandfather, Homer Brookhart.  Located in the Piqua Daily Call, Piqua, Ohio, Saturday, December 24, 1927, Page 4, Column 6 is the following:

D. W. Brookhart Dies

Piqua friends will be very sorry to learn of the sudden death Thursday night of D. W. Brookhart, of Celina, he suffered a paralytic stroke at the base of the brain and died almost immediately. Clark Brookhart, of Virginia street, Piqua, is a son.

Mrs. Etta Brookhart

TROY, Feb. 18.--Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Brookhart, 1018 E. Franklin st., were called to Celina by the death of the former's mother, Mrs. Etta Brookhart, 71, who succumbed Friday to paralysis after having suffered a stroke one week ago.

The death of Mrs. Brookhart occurred in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Frank Shuck, in Celina. She was the widow of Daniel Brookhart, a farmer, who died 11 years ago. Previous to this death the couple lived for many years on a farm southwest of Celina.

Survivors in addition to Mrs. Shuck and Mr. Brookhart of Troy are four other sons, Clark of Piqua, Dean, Homer and Lawrence of Celina, and two daughters, Mrs. Clyde Montaque of Celina and Mrs. Everett Barker of Wren.

Homer Brookhart was the son of Daniel Webster Brookhart and Etta Young and the grandfather of Bill Rice.  The following newspaper obituary found in The Lima News, Lima, Ohio, Thursday, August 24, 1967, Page 4, Column 8:

CELINA -- Funeral services for Homer Brookhart, 72, of this city, will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Grace Missionary Church. Burial will be in Swamp College Cemetery, near here.

Mr. Brookhart died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on a residential street here where he had stopped to raise the hood of his automobile to find out why it was not running properly. Dr. Donald Fox, Mercer County coroner, attributed death to a heart attack.

Mr. Brookhart was born Oct. 16, 1894 in Warren County, Ohio.  He attended Grace Missionary Church.

Surviving are his wife, Lydia; two sons, Stanley of 1756 Breese Rd., Lima, and Carl of 4429 S. Dixie, Lima; five daughters, Mrs. Raymond Rice, 3023 Ft. Amanda Rd., Lima, Mrs. Berdell Welker of St. Marys, Mrs. William Buck of this city, Mrs. Lowell Ferner of Portland, Ind., and Mrs. Carol Hone, also of here; three brothters, Deand Lawrence, both of here, and Clark of Piqua; two sisters, Mrs. Everett Barker and Mrs. Frank Shook, both of this city; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Vale and Stein Funeral Home, Celina, after 7 tonight, until 1 p.m. Saturday, when the body will be removed to the church to await services.

In doing additional research on John William Shively a newspaper obituary was found in The Lima News, Lima, Ohio, Wednesday, December 13, 1939, Page 4, Column 5:

CELINA, Dec. 13 -- Funeral services will be held at Swamp College chapel Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock for John Shively, 78, retired businessman who died at his home west of Celina Tuesday morning following a lingering illness.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Amanda Young Shively, four daughters, Mrs. John Sealscott and Mrs. Chloe Hoenie, both of Celina, Mrs. Walter Hill of Union City, and Mrs. Dee Young of Lima; three sons, Melvin Shively, Ernest Shively and Walter Shively, all of Celina; 17 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Burial in Swamp college cemetery.

CELINA, Aug. 21 -- Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pau's Methodist church for Mrs. Manda E. Shively, 76, who died Monday at the Otis hospital where she had been a patient since Saturday. Dr. Tennyson Guyer will be in charge of the services with burial in Elmgrove cemetery St. Marys.

A lifelong resident of Mercer county she was a member of the Neptune Church of God and a member of the ladies auxiliary of Celina Post No. 210 of the American Legion.

Surviving are two sons, Ernest Young and James Young, both of Celina; a daughter, Mrs. William Nottingham, Route 4; a sister, Mrs. William Fisher, Route 4; a brother, Roy Piper, Celina; a granddaughter and a great grandson.

The body was removed from the Dick and Stallter funeral home to the residence, 313 E. Fulton st, to remain until services.

John William Shively was born on 24-May-1861 in Mercer County, OH and died on 12-Dec-1939 in Mercer County, OH.  He was the son of William M Shively and Sarah E. Information on John W. Shively was extracted from History Of Mercer County, Ohio And Representative Citizens, Edited And Compiled By Hon. S. S. Scranton, Celing, Ohio, Published By Biographical Publishing Company, Chicago, IL, 1907, Pages 297 and 298:

John W. Shively, a leading citizen of Hopewell township, formerly township treasurer and the owner of a general store at Stedcke, was born in Jefferson township, Mercer County, Ohio, May 24, 1861.  He is a son of William M. and Sarah E. (Carr) Shively.

Both parents of Mr. Shively were born in Ohio.  The father was a solider in the service of his country in the Civil War, and lost his life in that great struggle.  It thus came about that our subject was thrown entirely upon his own resources when but 10 years of age.  He left Jefferson township and for a number of years worked at farming throughout Mercer County, and later operated a farm for himself.  In 1887 he embarked in the mercantile business at Stedcke, which he has conducted ever since, each year enlarging and adding to the stock of goods handled.  He owns a farm of 40 acres in Hopewell township and another, of 80 acres, in Butler township and also operates another store, at Mercer.  He is one of the county’s enterprising and successful business men.  He has also been very active in politics, has served as clerk of the Board of Elections of Hopewell township and for six years was township treasurer.  He has also served as Postmaster at Stedcke.  He is a stanch Republican.

Mr. Shively has been twice married.  His first wife, Sarah E. Buch(Buck), at death left two children, Melvin and oral, the latter of whom is the wife of John Sielschott, of Mercer.  He married second, Eliza Crouch, and they have five children, namely: Chloe, Florence, Walter, Nora and Ernest B.  Both he and his wife are members of the German Baptist Church.

Mr. Shively is a representative, self made man and his material success is but the result of close application to business, honest dealing with his fellow citizens and an integrity of character, which has brought him the confidence and esteem of those with whom he has come in contact.

Children of John Shively and Sarah Buck included:  son Melvin J. born 25-Jan-1884 died 3-Apr-1948 buried Swamp College Cemetery.  Melvin J. married Mary "Mollie" J Snyder  on 27-Sep-1903 in Mercer County;   daughter Oral Edith born 11-Oct-1885 died 15-Jun-1943 buried Buck Cemetery.  She married John Henry Sielschott (Sealscott) on 22-Jan-1905 in Mercer County.   Children of John Shively and Eliza Crouch included:  Chloe M born 18-Oct-1890 died 23-Mar-1982 buried Swamp College Cemetery.  She married John Adolph Hoenie on 29-Jan-1908 in Mercer County; Florence D born 2-Apr-1893 died 2-Apr-1944 buried Swamp College Cemetery.  She married Robert Hill; Walter H born 6-Feb-1895 died 6-Sep-1979 buried Swamp College Cemetery.  He married Bertha S. Viereck on 3-Mar-1920 in Mercer County;  LeNora (Nora) S. Shively born 11-Mar-1897 died 7-Aug-1980 buried North Grove Cemetery.  She married Ernest Dee Young; and Ernest Basil born 5-Mar-1899 died 20-Jul-1980 buried Friends Chapel Cemetery.  He married Fannie Florence Fisher on 16-Feb-1922 in Mercer County.
