James Floyd Shively, Cortland, OH shared the following information. George Washington Shively, Sr. was born 8-Nov-1798 n Cumberland County, PA and died on 28-May-1883 in Mahoning County, OH. He was married 1st to Elizabeth Opp and 2nd to Maria Grove. She was born on 6-Feb-1806 and died 11-Nov-1859 in Mahoning County, OH. Both are buried in Old North Cemetery, Canfield, Mahoning County, OH. George Washington Shively, Sr. descends from the line of Peter Scheibly/Shively who was born 10-Apr-1742 in Switzerland and died 1823 in Perry County, PA.

Listed on the 1850 Austintown, Mahoning County, PA census is the family of George Shively age 52, wife Maria age 46, daughter Elizabeth age 13, son Daniel age 12, son Abraham age 10, son George age 9, daughter Caroline age 6 and son John age 4. Located on the 1860 Austintown, Mahoning County, OH census is George Shively age 62, son David age 21, son Abraham age 20, son George W. age 18, daughter Caroline age 15, son John age 14 and Catharine Whetsler age 67. On the 1870 Austintown, Mahoning County, census are George Shively age 71, Sarah age 44, son George W. age 28, son John age 24, domestic servant Susan Swank age 45 and Caroline Kistler age 26. Listed on the 1880 Austintown, Mahoning County, OH census are George Shively age 81, daughter Sarah age 53, daughter Caroline Kistler age 35, grandson John Kistler age 11, niece Lottie Shively, and boarder John C. Bookhart age 57.

At the last pioneer reunion the subject of collecting biographies of the pioneers and early settlers was frequently spoken of, but no definate plan adopted to obtain them. This is very desirable, and if some one or more in each township, hand with the pen, would visit the veterans and the children & neighbors of those who have passed away, and take notes of the histories they could relate, a very valuable amount of historical & biographical information can be collected. Will our friends in the Valley do this, and report to me, or any other officer of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, the result of their labors, for publication & preservation among our records. We have already some valuable biographies & desire all that we can obtain.

Enjoying an interview with a venerable & highly respected pioneer of a neighboring township, a few days since, I noted down some facts on his life as he related them & herewith present them:

Biography of George Shibely

George Shibely, of Austintown, was born in Tyrone township, Cumberland County (now Perry County) Pennsylvania, November 8, 1798. He came with his parents to Austintown, Trumbull County (now Mahoning County) Ohio in May, 1812, passing through Youngstown, which then consisted of only a few log cabins on each side of the main street, and grass was growing in the streets. The family came in a big wagon drawn by a four-horse team.

       His father’s name was Frederick Shibely, after whom Frederick S. Whitsler, of Youngstown, a son of one of his daughters in named. He died at the age of 56 years. George’s mother died at the age of 63 years. Frederick Shibely bought a tract of land on the “Racoon Road”, as it is called, in the east part of Austintown, on which George now lives, and to which he has made some additions. The land at that time was all woods, and the father & son immediately went to work & cleared up a farm. Frederick and wife had eleven children - six sons & five daughters - who all lived to adult age. Four have died; the rest are living.

George married Elizabeth Opp in Austintown, by whom he had two children. She only lived a few years after the marriage. He married for his second wife Maria Grove, of Austintown, daughter of Wendall Grove, a revolutionary soldier; & sister of John & Andrew Grove. By her he had six children. The 8th - 4 sons & 4 daughters - are all grown up & married. He recollects the events of his early life and the conditions of the country and manners of the people then.

He says the early settlers were very accommodating and always ready to help one another. They always went to log cabin & other raisings, on which occasions whiskey was plenty as water; and was considered indispensable. He speaks of one instance in which the man who had united his neighbors to help him raise, refused to furnish whiskey and found it difficult to get his cabin up. He was well acquainted with Judge Tod, Colonel Hillman, James Mackey, Colonel Rayen and the old citizens of Youngstown. He saw Colonel Rayen in his uniform in command of his regiment, when he had them ready to march to the frontier in the fall of 1812, and says the Colonel was a fine looking man.

This old pioneer, now in his 82nd year, was never sick but once, which was about 40 years ago. Packard attended him. Mr. Shibely was afraid he would not get well. Dr. Packard assured him that he would recover & that he might perhaps live twenty years longer. “And now”, he says, “I have lived forty years longer, and nothing ails me but old age”.

The old gentleman has frequently visited Youngstown this winter on business.

Abraham Shively And Wife Sarah Marshall Who Lived In McKean County, Pennsylvania

Abraham Shively was born 24-Nov-1839 in Ohio and died 18-Nov-1912 in Bradford, McKean County, PA.  Abraham was the son of George Shively and Maria Grove. Abraham married Sarah Marshall who was born 10-Apr-1859 in Oneida, Madison County, NY and died 23-Jan-1941 in Bradford, McKean County, PA.  Sarah was the daughter of Hiram Marshall and Sophia Hess.  The grandfather of Abraham Shively was Frederick Shively born 14-Mar-1772 in Berks County, PA and died 18-Sep-1828 in Mahoning County, OH and Elizabeth Flick (1773-1836). Frederick Shively was the son of Peter Scheibley (Sheibley) born 10-Apr-1742 and died 7-Sep-1823 in Perry County, PA and 1st wife Anna Elizabeth Heinsin (Heins).

Abraham Shively and Sarah Marshall were the parents of at least three children: 1) child who died in 1884 2) Mabel (Mabelle) C. born Mar-1885 died 27-Mar-1951 in Bradford, McKean County, PA and married John Pryde and 3) George Shively born Jun-1887 died 14-Sep-1964 in McKean County, PA and married Hazel Phadenhauer.

Late Abraham Shively Had Lived In Bradford 33 Years -- The Funeral

Funeral services over the remains of the late Abraham Shively will be held at the house, corner Congress and Pike streets, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. W. M. Courson, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Interment at Oak Hill.

Mr. Shively, whose death at the Bradford hospital early Monday morning, was announced in The Era, was a native of Austintown, O.  He was born November 24, 1838.

In the time of the early oil excitement at Petrolia, he located there and for a time was engaged in the grocery business. In 1879 he came to Bradford where he had since been a well known oil well contractor.

Besides his widow, he leaves one daughter, Miss Mabel Shively and one son, George Shively, all of Bradford: two brothers, John Shively, of Youngstown, O., and George Shively, of Warren, O., and two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Philips of Youngstown, O. and Mrs. Calvin Burnett, of Akron, Ohio.

Resident Here 60 Years Dies At Her Home In Pike Street

Mrs. Sarah Shively, 81, well-known resident of this city for the past 60 years, died at her home, 30 Pike street, yesterday afternoon at 2:18 o'clock. Mrs. Shively had been ill of complications for the past three months.

Born in Oneida, N.Y., April 10, 1859, she came to Bradford from Buffalo about 60 years ago. She was the widow of A. Shively, who died November 18, 1912.

Highly-respected, she had many friends. She was a member of the First Methodist church of this city.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mabelle Pryde, and a son, George Shively, both of this city.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home. The Rev. Ernest E. Davis, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery.

The McAllister funeral home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Christian M. Shively And Wife Mary Shoenberger Who Lived In Mahoning County, Ohio

Christian M. Shively was born on 1-Feb-1831 and died 19-Apr-1918 in Mahoning County, OH. He was married to Mary Shoenberger who was born ca. 1835 and died 13-Dec-1922. She was the daughter of George and Susanna (Susan) Shoenberger. Christian and Mary are buried in the Jackson Township Cemetery, North Jackson, Mahoning County, OH. 

Christian M. Shively was the son of Johannes Shively born 21-Dec-1796 in Cumberland County, PA died 21-Jun-1866 in Trumbull County, OH and Hanna Miller (1794-1880). Johannes was the son of Frederick Shively born 14-Mar-1772 in Berks County, PA and died 18-Sep-1828 in Mahoning County, OH and Elizabeth Flick (1773-1836). Christian Shively, aged about 86, show spent most of his life here, died Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lottie Kroeck, in Hubbard, where he and his wife went last fall to spend the winter. He had been in fairly good health, being sick only a short time. The remains were brought here Monday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hoskins in the Christian church, where he was a member. He leaves his widow, one son and two daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Frank W. Shively And Wife, Anna M. Armbrust, Of Stark And Hamilton County, Ohio

The following newspaper obituary for Anna M. Shively was located in The Cincinnati Post, Cincinnati, Ohio, Thursday, July 17, 1919, Page 18, Column 5:

SHIVELY--Anna M. Shively (nee Armbrust), beloved wife of the late Frank W. Shively, at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Sophia Hoffman, 404 Walnut st., Elmwood Place, O., Tuesday 15, at 8:30a.m., in her 49th year.

Services at the late residence Thursday evening, July 17, at 7:30.  Interment Friday, July 18, at Canton, O.

The Ohio death certificate for Anna M. Shively lists her parents as Daniel Armbrust born in Germany and Sophia Gerbig born in Germany.  Anna was born on 16-July-1870 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.  She died on 15-July-1919 in Hamilton County, Ohio.  Anna Armbrust was married to Frank W. Shively on 10-October-1894 in Hamilton County.

Frank W. Shively was the son of Edward W. Shively and Mary Malinda Appel. Frank was born on 11-May-1868 in Stark County, Ohio and died 6-December-1914 in Hamilton County, Ohio.  His occupation was listed as a railroad clerk. Frank Shively is listed in the household of his parents on the 1870 and 1880 Stark County, Ohio, City of Canton, census.  Frank and wife Anna are listed on the 1900 and 1910 Hamilton County, Ohio, City of Cincinnati, census with Anna's mother, Sophia Armbrust.

Edward W. Shively, father of Frank W. Shively, was born on 4-July-1845 Louisville, Stark County, Ohio and died 8-November-1920 in Stark County, Ohio and buried in West Lawn Cemetery.  His occupation was listed as a house painter.  Edward was the son of Frederick Shively and Elizabeth Ream.  For additional information on Frederick Shively see the Shively blog from January 13, 2012.   Mary Malinda Appel, mother of Frank W. Shively, was born 16-March-1846.  She was the daughter of Henry Appel and Eliza Hibshman. She died on 24-January-1925 in Stark County, Ohio and is buried in West Lawn Cemetery. Edward Shively and Mary M. Appel were married on 23-August-1866 in Stark County, Ohio.

Frederick Shively And Elizabeth Ream From Stark County, Ohio

The early newspapers in Stark County, Ohio have many articles relating to the surname Shively.  Frederick Shively was born about 1798  and died in Stark County on 29-Oct-1883.  He was married to Elizabeth Ream on 3-Sep-1828.  Frederick was the son of Conrad Shively and Mary Moyer.  The parents of Conrad Shively were John Shively (born 24-Jul-1748, later carried away by Indians) and Eve Shively.

The death of Frederick Shively was recorded in The Canton Daily Repository, Canton, Ohio, Monday evening, 29-Oct-1883, Page 1, Column 6:

Suddenly Called

Mr. Frederick Schively Died After A Few Minutes Sickness

About noon to-day the startling news that Mr. Frederick Shively, of No. 294 South Market street, had dropped dead was current on the street.  A Repository reporter repaired to Mr. Joseph Shively (his son’s) residence, No. 66 East Tuscarawas street, to learn the truth of the rumor, and there, lying cold in death, was the corpse of the well  and favorably known citizen.  He had been up town this morning, and while walking on Seventh street suddenly fell to the pavement.  A passer-by helped the old gentleman up and with difficulty he walked to his son’s residence, and was met by Mrs. Joseph Shively and helped up stairs, this being about 11:15 o’clock.  He sat in a chair for a few moments and then laid down on a bed, saying he was not feeling well.

Dr. Johnson was sent for, but before he arrived he died.  The doctor attributed the sudden demise to paralysis of the heart.

Mr. Shively has been a resident of this city for a great many years and is known by nearly every one, and stood high in the estimation of all who knew him.  He leaves five children to mourn his loss.  The children all well advanced in years.  Mr. Shively was nearly eighty years of age.

Frederick is listed on the 1850 Stark County, Ohio, Nimishillen Township census .  In the household are Fred Shively age 42 a shoemaker, wife Elizabeth age 38, son Seraphin age 13, son Josiah (also listed as Joseph in the records) age 10, son Ed age 5, and daughter Ellenora age 2.

Seraphine Shively Dies At His Home On Jackson Street This Morning – His

Family In Goshen, Ind. And The Time Of The Funeral Not Decided Upon

Mr. Seraphin Shively, aged about 60, an old resident of Canton, died at his home, No. 8 Jackson street, at 10:30 o’clock this morning from neuralgia of the stomach.  Mr. Shively is well known in this city and his many friends will learn with regret of his demise.  His family, excepting his daughter Carrie, are in Goshen, Ind., and until their arrival the time of holding the funeral cannot be decided upon.  He was a man of generous heart and had gained for himself hosts of friends.  To them and his family this will be a sad blow.

Josiah Shively Is Dead At 71 Years

Josiah Shively, 71, died Tuesday night at his home, 219 Hazlette avenue. Bronchial asthma caused his death.  Mr. Shively had lived in Canton since early youth, coming here from Louisville.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. George Sweatt, 721 Fulton street, and Mrs. Ed T. Johnson, 1025 West Fourth street, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services, which will be private, will be held at the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock.  Burial will be in Westlawn cemetery.

Seraphin Shively was married to Francis F. Cunningham.  Her obituary is recorded in The Evening Repository, Wednesday, February 11, 1908, Page 1, Column 6:

Death Of Mrs. Shively From Paralysis – Former Teacher In Public Schools

Mrs. Francis F. Shively, relict of Seraphim Shively died at 5 o’clock, Wednesday morning at her home, 532 South McKinley avenue from paralysis, her father, Thomas Cunningham, was one of the principal builders and contractors many years ago.  Her mother, Mrs. Cunningham, died at Mrs. Shively’s home a few years ago, the oldest person in Canton then.  Mrs. Shively for more than 12 years, was a teacher in the public schools and was popular and efficient, in that capacity.  In 1865 she was married to Seraphim Shively who died in 1892.  Mrs. Shively had four children, Nora C., Caroline E., Fred and Thomas C. Shively, who are living with their mother, the two daughters being school teachers in the city.  When Mrs. Shively was 15 years old she joined the First Baptist church and had at all times been active in Christian work.  One sister, C. B. Campbell, of this city, and Oliver and Henry Cunningham of Indiana, survive.

The children of Seraphin and Frances Shively remained in the Stark County, Ohio area.  The dates of their deaths are recorded as:  Nora C. Shively died 22-June-1940 with burial in Westlawn Cemetery, Canton, Ohio; Caroline E. Shively died 4-May-1952 with burial in Westlawn Cemetery; Fred M Shively died 25-March-1921 with burial in Westlawn Cemetery; and Thomas C. Shively died 24-June-1947 with burial in Westlawn Cemetery.
