This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Rev. Joel Shively
The Rev. Joel Shively, who had been a resident of St. Joseph county for nearly 50 years, died at his residence, 1071 Vistula avenue, at 12:25 o'clock Sunday morning. The cause of death was gastritis or catarrh of the stomach, with which he was taken last September. Up to that time he had never been seriously ill since an attack of scarlet fever at the age of 14.
The disease caused him no pain or suffering, but he constantly grew weaker until Feb. 21, when he took to his bed. In spite of all efforts to arrest the progress of the disease he continued failing in strength and passed away without a struggle or symptom of pain. He was conscious to the last. When he first became conscious to of his growing weakness and the character of his desease he expressed grave doubts of his recovery and calmly and resignedly awaited the end.
Joel Shively was born in Starke county, Ohio, Oct. 9, 1826, the son of Rev. George and Elizabeth Shively, the former a native of Washington county, Pa., and the latter of Beford county, Pa. He was united in marriage with Elizabeth Penrod June 5, 1851, at Golden Corners, Wayne county, Ohio, and came to Indiana in 1854 and settled in the east part of St. Joseph county, near Osceola. He learned the carpenter trade at the age of 17 and followed it for over 30 years and his life had been one of incessant activity and hard work. After quitting carpenter work he followed farming until two years ago last October, when he removed to the Vistual avenue residence in this city. Mr. Shively united with the German Baptist church in 1854 and was ordained a minister in that church in 1857. He continued his services as a minister until rendered in capable by illness and had been a presiding elder for the past 18 years. Among his last services was officiating at the funeral of his old neighbor and friend, Jacob Linderman, of Penn township, on Nov. 27 last. His widow and five children survive him. The children are Mrs. Rebecca Kindig, of Elkhart county; Hon Benjamin F. Shively, Aaron B. Shively and Christian C. Shively, of South Bend, and Katherine Shively, who is now enroute home from California.
Brief services will be held at the residence on Thursday at 11 a.m., burial from the Osceola chapel at 2 p.m.

Charles A. Shively, who resided near the Bixler-Jones foundry between Freemansburg and Bethlehem, met sudden death Sunday morning at 4:30 o'clock on the Central Railroad of New Jersey tracks. He was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company and worked on Friday night and was through then at the shops until Monday morning. He did not sleep on Saturday and on Saturday evening started with some friends on a fishing trip to the Lehigh near Freemansburg. After fishing during the night Shively started for home. He sat down to rest on the outside edge of the sills of the cast-bound track and fell asleep.
The engineer of the freight saw the huddled figure of a man sitting close to the rails, his head bent over in his hands and sounded the whistle. The figure failed to move, though the shrill blasts blew loud and long. It was impossible to stop the train. Death was instantaneous. A deep cut back of the right ear, the back of the skull split, and a broken shoulder blade were the fatal injuries. The body was carried to the Central Railroad station and later brought by Undertaker Weirbach, of South Bethlehem, to the late home of the deceased, where Coroner Schleicher held a view yesterday morning.
The deceased was the son of Peter and Eva Green Shively, of Catasauqua, and was born in Lower Saucon township on August 7, 1875. He was married on September 17, 1889, to Miss Kate Cope, who survives him, as does a little son, Roland. His parents, three sisters, Mrs. Milton Serfoss, of Freemansburg; Mrs. James Kratzer and Mrs. Elmer Trine, of Catasauqua, and three brothers,  Edward, Herbert and William, of Catasauqua, also survive. The funeral will take place on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. Interment will be made at Catasauqua.

Another High Cost
There is a lot of talk about this matter of the high cost of living, but what could one expect when other things cost so high as evidenced by a startling occurrence in which a farmer of near town figured in this week.  John L. Shively, S. S. Flack, Jerry Elder and John Breegle are among those who have been planting new fruit trees this spring.  Mr. Shively had a consignment of trees coming to him from a nursery over in Maryland.  When the bundle came instead of fruit trees they were hydrangeas.  A mistake in shipping had been made, and in order to have the mistake remedied quickly to be with no loss Mr. Shively hurried to the long distance telephone, called up the nursery and informed the latter of the error.  When he got through the brief conversation and was ready to pay his telephone call bill one of $2.50 made him nearly drop dead.  The next time it will be no telephone for him.

Have received word that Charles T. Shively, former Doverite, has retired from the postal service at Gallup, N.M., after being on Uncle Samuel's payroll more than 37 years.  He resided here on E. 11th-st, then Plano-st, and was employed by the Reeves Corrugating Works, long since dismantled.
Mr. Shively is a brother of Mrs. Marvin Miller and Mrs. Flossie Burrell of Dover and George and David Shively of Strasburg.  He went West about 40 years ago. A postal clerk in Santa Fe, he transferred to the Gallup office in 1919, upon his discharge from the Army after serving in World War I.  He was assistant postmaster at Gallup until 1941 when ill health caused him to transfer to Farmington, N.M.  He remained there a year and then returned to Gallup.
When he retired with almost 38 years of service, his colleagues gave him a set of luggage.  He plans to spend about eight months in Phoenix to recuperate and then will decide where to "settle down".  He has been active in the Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges at Gallup.
Oh, yes, Mr. Shively now will have time to pursue his favorite hobby -- collecting stamps!

George Shively (Sheively) Of Charleston, South Carolina

1818 Inventory Of George Shively
Little documentation has been preserved by the Shively researchers for George Sheively (Shively) who is located in the early records of Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina.   Did George Shively have a family and are there descendants living today?
George Shively is listed on the 1800 and 1810 Charleston County, South Carolina census records.  From these records it would appear that George did have a family.  Listed in the 1800 household are 2 males under 10 and 1 male between 26 and 44, 1 female under 10, 1 female between 10 and 15, and 1 female between 26 and 44, and 1 slave.  Listed in the 1810 census record are 1 male between 10 and 15, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 2 females between the ages of 10 and 15, and 1 female over 45.
The death of George Shively is listed in the Commercial Advertiser, New York, Saturday Evening, Septemeber 12, 1818, Page 2, Column 4.  From the article, "DIED    At Charleston, Mr George Shively, 65.    From this article we have an estimated year of birth as 1753.
The WPA information from the index of the wills of Charleston County lists an entry for a will for George Scheively, Volume 34 (1818-1826), Page 1114.  A copy has been requested from the Charleston Public Library where copies of the wills are located.     The above picture is a  copy of the inventory for George Shively from Book E, Page 93, November 1818.
There are numerous advertisements for George Shively, also listed at times as George Sheively, in the old newspapers for seed that he has for sale.  From these ads it is known that he had a Seed Store in Charleston located at 117 Meeting Street.
One interesting article found in the City Gazette and Daily Advertiser, Tuesday, December 22, 1812, Page 3, Column 1 describes the following shipment being sent to George Shively: Ship News, Port Of Charleston,   Information has been received that the schooner Fanny & Maria, Miller, and sloop Mary-Ann, Williams, both from Philadelphia bound to this port, have been captured on their passage by the British brig Sophie.  The cargo of the Fanny & Maria was consigned to the following persons:---John Hoff, Wm. Burgoyne, Wm. DeBow, Bates & Perkins, T. Johnson, Thos. Flemming, London Paine,  B. Palmer, Brooks & Potter, John White, Geo. Shively, M. Miller, C. F. Deliesseline  and others not listed for this blog.
One note of interest is that the surname of Strobel appears with many of the pieces of information found for George Shively.  It appears that the Strobel family had a business next to the seed store of George Shively.
Additional information regarding the history of George Shively is requested.  If anyone has additional information and would be interested in sharing it would be appreciated.
