The following information was taken from the Kentucky death records. Maggie Alsop Shively  Phillips was born 31-Jan-1857 and died 10-Nov-1944.  She was married to Samuel Phillips.

Harry Shively Funeral To Be Tomorrow

The funeral for Harry Shively, 94, member of the family for whom the City of Shively is named, will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Hardy Funeral Home, 4101 Dixie Highway.  Burial will be in Louisville Memorial Gardens.

Shively died at 9:15 p.m. Monday at his home, 4230 Dixie Highway.  He had been ill two weeks.

The city got its name from his grandfather, Christian William Shively, who established a mill in the area about 1810.  Harry Shively's father, the late William H. Shively, was a deputy sheriff of Jefferson County.

Was Tourist-Court Pioneer

Harry Shively in 1923 established the first tourist court along Dixie Highway.  He sold it in 1946. He was a charter member of Shively Baptist Church.

Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. O. L. Michells, Tampa, Fla.; Mrs. Margaret Adams, Long Beach, Cal.; Mrs. Walter C. Nennsteil and Mrs. J. H. Brink; two sons, Harry R. and William H. Shively; 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

The following information was taken from the Kentucky death records. Sue Shively Hollis was born 7-Nov-1863 and died 12-Mar-1938.  The following was extracted from The Courier-Journal, Louisville, KY, Sunday, March 13, 1938, Page 10, Column 3:

Funeral services for Mrs. Sue Shively Hollis, 74, who died at 3:08 a.m. Saturday at her home, 1506 Berry Blvd., will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Lee Cralle Funeral Home, 1330 S. 3d.  Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery.  She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Frank Portman and Mrs. Maggie Phillips, and a brother, Harry Shively.

Sadie Shively Portman was born 7-June-1866 in Shively, Jefferson County, KY and died 12-Apr-1949.  She was married to Frank P. Portman.  The following was extracted from The Courier-Journal, Louisville, KY, Wednesday, April 13, 1949, Page 12, Column 2:

Mrs. Sadie Portman, 82, wife of Frank B. Portman, a retired member of the City Police Department, died at 11:50 a.m. yesterday at Virginia Avenue Convalescent Home.  She lived at 842 S. 36th.

Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Joseph E. Smart; a brother, Harry Shively; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Dougherty's Shawnee Chapel.  Burial will be in Portland Cemetery.

William H. Shively was born Jan-1830 and died 19-Jan-1906. He was married on 15-Nov-1853 in Jefferson County to Margaret J. Jones. Margaret was born 29-Sep-1830 and died 16-Jul-1912.  Margaret was the daughter of Stephen Jones and Elizabeth French.  

Listed on the 1860 Jefferson County, KY census is the household of Wm H Shively age 30, wife Margaret age 29, daughter Maria age 5, daughter Maggie age 3, son Stephen age 2, and daughter Mary age 6 months.  On the 1870 Shiveleys Precinct, Jefferson County, KY is the household of Wm Shiveley age 39, wife Margaret age 39, daughter Maria age 15, daughter Margaret age 13, daughter Ella age 10, son Harry age 8, daughter Susan age 6, and daughter Sadie age 4.  On the 1880 Jefferson County, KY census is the household of William Shively age 50, wife Margaret age 49, son Harry age 18, daughter Susan age 16, and daughter Katy L age 14.  On the 1900 Jefferson County, KY census is the household of William H Shively born Jan-1830 age 40, wife Margaret born Sep-1830 age 69, daughter Susan A born Nov-1863 age 36 and grandson Harry R Short born Jan-1885 age 15.

Anniversary of Wedding

William H. Shively, at one time a deputy sheriff of Jefferson county, died at 1:10 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 2121 West Madison street.  He was seventy-six years of age, and had been in poor health for more than a year.  He had been confined to his bed but two days.

Mr. Shively was a member of a pioneer Kentucky family.  He was born near the forks of the Seventh street road, three miles from Louisville.  He was a stanch Democrat, and served as deputy sheriff of Jefferson county for twenty years.  He took an active interest in politics from the time he was old enough to vote.

On November 15, Mr. and Mrs. Shively celebrated the fifty-second anniversary of their marriage.  Mrs. Shively was Miss Margaret Jones.  Besides his wife, Mr. Shively is survived by three daughters and a son, Harry Shively, who lives at the old family homestead.  Former Magistrate J. P. Shively is a brother of Mr. Shively.

The funeral service will be conducted at the Mill Creek church on the Seventh street road Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.

The Rev. J. S. Scobee, assisted by the Rev. P. G. Thogmorton, will officiate.  The burial will be in the cemetery at Shively, Ky.

The following was found in The Courier-Journal, Louisville, KY, Wednesday, July 17, 1912, Page 5, Column 5:

Mrs. Margaret J. Shively

Mrs. Margaret J. Shively, widow of W. H. Shively, after whom Shively Station in Jefferson county was named, died at noon yesterday at the home of her son-in-law, Capt. Frank Portman, 2117 West Madison street, at the age of 82.  Two years ago Mrs. Shively suffered a fracture of her hip, and she had almost recovered from this injury when she had a stroke of apoplexy eight months ago.  She never recovered fully from that attack.

Mrs. Shively's parents came from Wales and settled in what was known as the Pond settlement.  Many relatives of the deceased live in all parts of the State, and she was widely known in Jefferson county.  She is survived by four children, Mrs. Portman, Mrs. Sam T. Phillips, Mrs. Sue Alsop and Harry Shively. A number of grandchildren, among them the Rev. H. R. Short, and several great-grandchildren also survive.  The funeral will be held at 10:30 o'clock to-morrow morning at the Millcreek church, and interment will be in the family burial place in Shively.

Children Of Jacob Shively And Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp) From Northumberland County, PA

Jacob Shively was born 29-Sep-1853 in Wurttemberg Germany and died 18-Dec-1898 in Northumberland Co., PA.  He was married to Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp). She was born 29-Dec-1858 in Lykens, Dauphin Co., PA and died 2-Apr-1953 in Lewisburg, Union Co., PA. Sarah was the daughter of George Chubb (Tschopp) and Magdalena Schoffstall.  

Jacob Shively and Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp) were the parents of at least the following children:  Charles F. born 29-Oct-1880 died 15-Sep-1939; Jacob E born 3-Aug-1883 died 17-Aug-1959; Frederick Henry Shively born 31-Oct-1885; Harry Shively born 10-Feb-1887 died 6-Oct-1918; Arthur J born 9-Dec-1890 died 5-Mar-1968; Francis H born 25-Feb-1895 died 21-Aug-1958 and Clarence W born 10-Feb-1897.

Gowen Street Man Dies In Hospital

Jacob E. Shively, 76, of 615 West Gowen Street, died at 12:30 this morning in Northumberland County Institutional Hospital, Trevorton Road, where he had been a medical patient for five days. Death, due to a heart condition and asthma, terminated an illness of three months' duration.

A lifelong resident of Shamokin, Mr. Shively was born August 3, 1883, a son of the late Jacob and Sarah Jane (Chubb) Shively.  He was educated in local schools and during most of his adult life worked as a miner.  Mr. Shively was last employed at Glen Burn Colliery.  He retired approximately 10 years ago.

The late West Gowen Street resident first was married to Miss Kathryn Krock, who died in 1920.  Later he was married to the former Florence Miller, who preceded him in death two years ago.  Mr. Shively was a member of St. John's Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Red Men Lodge of Shamokin.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Florence Fisher, Shamokin; four sons, Howard, Lemoyne; William, Berlin Heights, Ohio; Russell, Sandusky, Ohio; and Elwood, Fremont, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and three brothers, Arthur, Shamokin; Clarence, Kulpmont; and Fred, Lewiston.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3:00 in Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets.  The Rev. George C. Bingaman, past of St. John's United Church of Christ, will officiate.  Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Trevorton Road.  Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening, from 7:00 to 9:00 and Thursday until time of services.

From the Pennsylvania death certificates it is recorded that Harry Shively was the son of Jacob Shively who was born in Germany and Sara Tschopp who was born in Pennsylvania.  Harry was born on 20-Feb-1887 and died 6-Oct-1918 from tobar pneumonia with contributing influenza.  He was a miner and was buried 8-Oct-1918 in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Shamokin, PA.

Located in The News Dispatch, Shamokin, PA, Wednesday, March 6, 1968, Page 2, Column 2:

Arthur James Shively, 77,  of 406 West Spruce Street, Shamokin, died at 4:45 p.m. yesterday in Shamokin State General Hospital.  Ill for four years, he was hospitalized since February 26.

Born in Mount Carmel, Arthur Shively was a son of the late Jacob and Sarah (Chubb) Shively. He moved to Shamokin as a child and remained until his death. Mr. Shively was employed in regional breakers for many years, then became custodian of Shamokin High School, a post from which he retired in 1959. He later worked for Trinity Evangelical Church and Martz Milk Company as a fireman.

Arthur J. Shively and Miss Carrie Heitzman were married December 9, 1910 by the Rev. C. B. Schneder, who was a pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ.  The late resident, who was educated in Shamokin schools, was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and of the P.O.S. of A.

Surviving are the widow,, one son, Mahlon, Trevorton Road; a granddaughter reared by the Shivelys, Mrs. Roger (Nancy) Shuck, Mifflinburg; one great grandchild, and two brothers, Clarence, of Kulpmont, and Fred, of Lewiston.

Seventh Street Resident Expires

Francis Howard Shively, 63, of 540 South Seventh Street, widely known local American Red Cross first aid instructor and former Shamokin High School football trainer, died yesterday afternoon at 4:15 in Hamburg Sanitorium, where he was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis.

Mr. Shively was admitted first to Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Danville, on November 6, 1957.  He was taken to the Hamburg sanitarium on November 13, 1957.

Widely known as "Hank", Mr. Shively was born in Shamokin February 25, 1895, a son of the late Jacob and Sarah (Chubb) Shively.  He attended Stevens School.

Last employed as a night watchman at Shamokin Realty Company, Inc., Mr. Shively worked many years as a maintenance man when the former J. H. and C. K. Eagle Silk Mill was operated in the realty company building.

The late South Seventh Street resident served as trainer for Shamokin High School football teams from 1940 to 1948.  He taught approximately 35 classes in first aid under the American Red Cross program during and following World War II. He was awarded a certificate of achievement for his work as a local instructor.

Mr. Shively served 16 years as assessor in the Fourth Ward and held the post at the time of his death.  He was a member of the Past Presidents' Association of Patriotic Order Sons of America, and was secretary of Camp 30, Shamokin, when he was stricken ill.  He was secretary of West End Fire Company, also.

The late Mr. Shively was a member of Chestnut Street Methodist Church and Taghneghdoarus Tribe of Red Men.  He was married in Shamokin, April 16, 1921, to the former Miss Pearl Wolfgang.

Surviving in addition to the widow are a son, Lawrence, of Colmar; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph Spencer, Trevorton Road; Mrs. Seibert Salter, Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Nelson Woolcock, Paxinos; four brothers, Jacob and Arthur, Shamokin; Fred, Lewiston and Clarence, Kulpmont, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3:00 in Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets.  Rev. Donald Shafer, pastor of Chestnut Street Methodist Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.  Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening, from 7:00 to 9:00, and Monday until time of services.

Signature On Will Reveals Secret Of Girl's Elopement

By Associated Press. Louisville. June 17.--Fate conspired against pretty Jennie Fertig and willed that the secret of her elopement two days before last Christmas should be wrung from her yesterday afternoon.  Miss Fertig is a stenographer in the office of an attorney here and she was called on to sign a will as a witness.   Fearing that she might invalidate the will by signing her maiden name she resolutely laid aside her pen and declared that she could not sign it.

  Her employer did not ask any questions but comprehending that the situation looked a bit mystifying, she took the pen again and singed "Mrs. Jennie Fertig Shively".

  Then she admitted that she eloped with Harry R. Shively, an electrical worker, last Christmas. She is the daughter of Martin L. Fertig, assistant traffic manager of the Louisville & Portland canal.

Harry R. Shively was born on 14-Sep-1886 in Jefferson County, KY and died on 15-May-1958 in Jefferson County, KY.  Jennie Fertig was born about 1883 and died in Jefferson County, KY on 19-March-1960.   The information on the time of their marriage differs from the public records as their marriage can be located in Clark County, IN records dated 7-June-1910.  Jennie Fertig was the daughter of Martin Luther Fertig and Katherine Cassandra Barmore.  Harry R. Shively was the son of Harry Shively and Mary "Mollie" A (last name unknown).  

Harry and Jennie are listed on the 1920 Jefferson County, City of Louisville census record.  In the household are Harry age 33, wife Jennie B age 36, son Raymon E age 9, daughter Dorothy May age 6, son Floyd age 4, and son Walter C age 1.  This family is also listed in the 1930 Jefferson County, City of Louisville census record. The consists of Harry R age 44, wife Jennie age 46, son Raymond age 19, daughter Dorothy age 16, son Floyd age 14, son Carl age 11, daughter Elizabeth age 8 and daughter Jen age 6.  Also in the household are two boarders; Emma E Reese age 43 and Katheryn Reese age 18.  

Harry R. Shively's grandfather was William Shively who who born about 1830 and died on 19-Jan-1906 in Jefferson County, KY.  He was married to Margarett J (last name unknown).  William Shively was the son of Henry Shively (1794-1847) and Maria Hambleton.  Henry Shively was the son of Christian Shively (1746-1826).  Christian Shively was an early pioneer in Jefferson County, KY.
