Lynn who was born 15-Jun-1911 and died on 5-Mar-2008.  Elsie was the daughter of Victor Zeno Lynn and Beatrice Moon. 

Roy Ellsworth Shively was the son of Archie Medes Shively (born 26-Jul-1878 in Hartley Township, Union County, PA and died 11-Mar-1967) and Hannah L. Yarger (born 24-Dec-1883 in Union County, PA and died 11-Oct-1959). Archie was the son of Elias Eugene Shively (born Aug-1842 and died 25-Feb-1911 in Union County, PA) and Sarah Bickel. Elias Shively was the son of Daniel Shively (born 28-Jan-1805 in Northumberland County, PA and died 11-Oct-1871 and buried in Laurelton Lutheran Cemetery, Union County, PA) and Elizabeth Keister. Daniel was the son of John Shively (born 5-Feb-1776 in West Buffalo Township, Northumberland County, PA died 7-Dec-1862 in Hartley Township, Union County, PA buried Lewis Cemetery, Union County, PA) and Elizabeth Dersham (1783-1852). John Shively was the son of Christian Shively III (born 2-Feb-1751 in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, PA died 12-Dec-1842 Union County, PA) and Sophia Catharine Von Groate Schmidt. Christian Shively III was the son of Christen Schaeublin was was christened 25-Dec-1718 in Oberdorf, Basel, Switzerland and died after 16-Nov-1773 in York Township, York County, PA and Barbara Spittler. Christian Schaeublin was the son of Durs Schaeublin who was born about 1650 in Oberdorf, Basel, Switzerland died after 19-Jan-1690 and Margaret Straumann.

MILTON -- Roy E. Shively, 86, of 529 Chestnut St., died this morning at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born in Millmont on March 20, 1905, the son of the late Archie and Hannah Yarger Shively.

Mr. Shively attended Millmont schools, but has been a resident of Milton since 1926. For the past 11 years he has been employed by the borough.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, F and AM Masons, Milton, the Milton Moose and the Fifth Ware Hose Company.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Lynn Shively; four brothers, Eugene and Alfred Shively, both of Milton, Kenneth Shively, Dewart and Francis Shively, Muncy; two sisters, Mrs. Violet McGliton, Baltimore, Md. and Mrs. Leah Valiquette, Milton, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. from the John H. Shaw Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Albert Ambrose, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday evening.

MILTON -- Elsie S. Shively, 96, a lifelong resident of Milton, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Kramm Healthcare Center in Milton.

She was born June 15, 1911, in Milton, a daughter of the late Victor Zeno and Beatrice (Moon) Lynn. She was the widow of Roy E. Shively, who died Aug. 28, 1971.

Elsie retired from Evangelical Community Hospital Dietary Department and from Kramm Healthcare Dietary Department in Watsontown.

She was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milton, the Order of Eastern Star, the Golden Age Club and Evangelical Hospital Auxiliary.

Elise enjoyed crocheting afghans and made several for residents of Kramms and blankets for babies at the neo-natal unit at the Geisinger Medical Center. She also enjoyed taking bus trips, candy making and baking.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Larry C. and Joyce Shively of Archbald; two grandchildren, Lucinda Marie Phieffer of Harrisburg and Barton W. Shively of Mechanisburg; two step-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Zearfoss of Milton; and nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed.

Friends and relatives will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milmont, where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 with the Rev. Cheryl L. Berner officiating.  Interment will be made in Milton Cemetery.

Archie Shively of Millmont, Native Of Area

Archie Medes Shively, 88, of Millmont, passed away Saturday evening at 8:45 o'clock in the Fernandez Nursing Home, Montgomery. His demise followed an illness of over ten years, and he was a guest at the Fernandez Nursing Home, since July 7, 1958.

A native of Union County, he was born in Hartley Township on July 26, 1878, a son of the late Ellin Eugene and Sarah Bickel Shively. He was united in marriage in Hartleton to the former Hannah Louise Yarger. Mrs. Shively preceded her husband in death on October 11, 1959.

He was a painter by occupation, and prior to his illness attend God's Missionary Church, Millmont RD 1.

He is survived by the following children: Roy E. Shively, 529 Chestnut Street, Milton; Violet, wife of James McGilton, Baltimore, Maryland; Eugene H. Shively, 343 James Street, Milton; Clair R. Shively, address unkown; Leah V., wife Armand Valiquette, Milton RD 2; Kenneth E. Shively, Dewart; Francis L. Shively, 111 New Street, Muncy; and Alfred P. Shively, New Columbia RD1. He was preceded in death by three children, Chester V. Shively, Mrs. Grace E. Houtz, and Thomas A. Shively.

Also surviving are 21 granchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Weirick, Northumberland. He was predeceased by one brother, Harold Shively, on July 28, 1929.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Tueday at 1:30 p.m. from the James L. Schwartz home for funerals, 247 Chestnut Street, Mifflinburg. The Rev. Joseph H. Hoffman, Lewisburg RD, will officiate. Interment will be made in the new Laurelton Cemetery, Hartley Township, Union County.

Visitors are invited to honor the memory of Mr. Shively by calling at the Schwartz home for funerals this evening after 7 o'clock. Serving as casket bearers will be grandsons of Mr. Shively.

Mrs. Shively, 75, Milton Resident

Mrs. Hannah L. Shively, 75, who resided at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Valiquette, 211 Park Avenue, Milton, died at 12:40 p.m. Sunday at Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Danville, where she had been a patient for five days. She had been in ill health for a number of years.

Mrs. Shively was the wife of Arch Shively, who survives.

She was born Dec. 24, 1883, in Union county, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Yarger, and was married to Mr. Shively on January 18, 1901.

She was a member of God's Missionary Church, Millmont RD.

Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Mrs. Violet McGilton, Baltimore, Md.; Mrs. Harry Valiquette, Milton; and Mrs. Grace Houtz, Albion, N.Y.; six sons, Roy E., Eugene and Clair Shively, all of Milton; Kenneth Shively, Dewart; Francis Shively, Muncy, and Alfred Shively, New Columbia; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Alfred Yarger, of Millmont RD.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from God's Missionary Church, Millmont, with Rev. Josephh Hoffman, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Laurelton Cemetery.

Friends will be received Tuesday night at the George E. Carr funeral home in Mifflinburg.

William E. Shively, Son Of John Henry Shively And Mary Ann Withers, Who Lived In Northumberland County, Pennsylvania

William E. Shively

William Elmer (Ellmore) Shively was born on 23-April-1882 a son John Henry Shively and Mary Ann Withers. He was baptized on 15-January-1883 at Saint John's Lutheran Church, Lykens, Dauphin County, PA. He died on 5-May-1944 and time at death was Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA. Burial was in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Northumberland County, PA.  William E. Shively was married to Anna "Annie" Kreisher, daughter of George and Jennie Kreisher.

Wm. Shively For Sheriff

William Shively, of Kulpmont, who captured the Democratic nomination for High Sheriff of Northumberland county in one of the most interesting campaigns ever waged, is a typical man of the common people, and his fellow workers and neighbors are doing everything in their power to make his election in November a certainty.

Born in Lykens 41 years ago, William Shively came to Mount Carmel with his parents when he was six years of age.  Eighteen years ago he lost an arm while working in the mines at Alaska.

Shortly after the accident that has sadly handicapped the young man, the Shively family moved to what is now the thriving borough of Kulmpmont, becoming the first settlers in that locality.  Fifteen years ago the father and head of the family, John Shively, was killed in the mines of the Scott colliery.

Although he attended the elementary schools here, Mr. Shively is a self-educated man.  All his life he has been a close student, and he has acquired a fund of useful information that fits him admirably for the duties of the high office he seeks.

Mr. Shively is now employed in the mins at the Scott colliery, and works side by side with able-bodied men, toiling to support his family. He has been a loyal member of the United Mine Workers for over twenty years.

We know that Mr. Shively is going to get a tremendous vote here, where we know him best, and if he is elected the county will have a splendid official.

Boy's Awful Accident

William Shively, of Fifth and Vine streets, employed as a driver at the Alaska colliery, last evening had a narrow escape from losing his life.  He attempted to sprag a wagon when he slipped and fell alongside the tracks, his left arm falling beneath the wheels.  It was terribly crushed and he narrowly escaped bleeding to death.  Miners who were in that section of the mines at the time went to his assistance and bandaged the member.  He was removed to his home at eleven o'clock and Drs Williams and Millard amputated the arm at the shoulder. This afternoon he was resting easily.

The loss of his left arm did not seem to hamper William Shively as this article mentions he was a very capable baseball player.  Located in the Mount Carmel Item, Monday, September 17, 1923, Page 6, Column 5:

William Shively, Kulpmont, formerly of this city, is a strong candidate for the nomination of sheriff on the Democratic ticket.  He has conducted a clean campaign and has a large number of friends who are doing all in their power to bring him in a winner.

Mr. Shively was handicapped early in life by the loss of his left arm.  Twenty-four years ago while driving at Alaska colliery he fell under a car and was maimed for life.  Despite his affliction he looked on the bright side of life and continued active.

As a youth he was interested in sports and developed into a wonderful baseball player. He was a resident of west Second street, this city, when he first sprang into fame as a pitcher and despite the face that he had but one arm he was also a heavy hitter.

Mr. Shively's friends feel that he has proven himself to be the kind of a man that is entitled to the consideration of the voters for their support.  He is fully capable to perform the duties of the office he weeks to be nominated for.  He is held in high esteem by every person who knows him and if elected can be depended upon to do his duty.

William Shively For State Committeeman

William Shively, formerly of Mount Carmel, now of Sunbury, R.D. 3 has filed his petition as a candidate for State Committeeman from the Democratic ticket to represent Northumberland County.

"Bill" is a former Treasurer and Sheriff of Northumberland County so that he is well known all over the district.  In Mount Carmel he is particularly well known.

Shively is a Mount Carmel boy.  He spent a great part of his life here, the most active part of his life.  Possessed of but one arm "Bill" was one of the best baseball pitchers, fielders and hitters ever to play here.  In football he was a halfback and also played full back and did the kicking for his club.  He was also a wing shot of great ability.

Jacob Shively was born 29-Sep-1853 in Wurttemberg Germany and died 18-Dec-1898 in Northumberland Co., PA.  He was married to Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp). She was born 29-Dec-1858 in Lykens, Dauphin Co., PA and died 2-Apr-1953 in Lewisburg, Union Co., PA. Sarah was the daughter of George Chubb (Tschopp) and Magdalena Schoffstall.  

Jacob Shively and Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp) were the parents of at least the following children:  Charles F. born 29-Oct-1880 died 15-Sep-1939; Jacob E born 3-Aug-1883 died 17-Aug-1959; Frederick Henry Shively born 31-Oct-1885; Harry Shively born 10-Feb-1887 died 6-Oct-1918; Arthur J born 9-Dec-1890 died 5-Mar-1968; Francis H born 25-Feb-1895 died 21-Aug-1958 and Clarence W born 10-Feb-1897.

Gowen Street Man Dies In Hospital

Jacob E. Shively, 76, of 615 West Gowen Street, died at 12:30 this morning in Northumberland County Institutional Hospital, Trevorton Road, where he had been a medical patient for five days. Death, due to a heart condition and asthma, terminated an illness of three months' duration.

A lifelong resident of Shamokin, Mr. Shively was born August 3, 1883, a son of the late Jacob and Sarah Jane (Chubb) Shively.  He was educated in local schools and during most of his adult life worked as a miner.  Mr. Shively was last employed at Glen Burn Colliery.  He retired approximately 10 years ago.

The late West Gowen Street resident first was married to Miss Kathryn Krock, who died in 1920.  Later he was married to the former Florence Miller, who preceded him in death two years ago.  Mr. Shively was a member of St. John's Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Red Men Lodge of Shamokin.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Florence Fisher, Shamokin; four sons, Howard, Lemoyne; William, Berlin Heights, Ohio; Russell, Sandusky, Ohio; and Elwood, Fremont, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and three brothers, Arthur, Shamokin; Clarence, Kulpmont; and Fred, Lewiston.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3:00 in Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets.  The Rev. George C. Bingaman, past of St. John's United Church of Christ, will officiate.  Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Trevorton Road.  Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening, from 7:00 to 9:00 and Thursday until time of services.

From the Pennsylvania death certificates it is recorded that Harry Shively was the son of Jacob Shively who was born in Germany and Sara Tschopp who was born in Pennsylvania.  Harry was born on 20-Feb-1887 and died 6-Oct-1918 from tobar pneumonia with contributing influenza.  He was a miner and was buried 8-Oct-1918 in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Shamokin, PA.

Arthur James Shively, 77,  of 406 West Spruce Street, Shamokin, died at 4:45 p.m. yesterday in Shamokin State General Hospital.  Ill for four years, he was hospitalized since February 26.

Born in Mount Carmel, Arthur Shively was a son of the late Jacob and Sarah (Chubb) Shively. He moved to Shamokin as a child and remained until his death. Mr. Shively was employed in regional breakers for many years, then became custodian of Shamokin High School, a post from which he retired in 1959. He later worked for Trinity Evangelical Church and Martz Milk Company as a fireman.

Arthur J. Shively and Miss Carrie Heitzman were married December 9, 1910 by the Rev. C. B. Schneder, who was a pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ.  The late resident, who was educated in Shamokin schools, was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and of the P.O.S. of A.

Surviving are the widow,, one son, Mahlon, Trevorton Road; a granddaughter reared by the Shivelys, Mrs. Roger (Nancy) Shuck, Mifflinburg; one great grandchild, and two brothers, Clarence, of Kulpmont, and Fred, of Lewiston.

Seventh Street Resident Expires

Francis Howard Shively, 63, of 540 South Seventh Street, widely known local American Red Cross first aid instructor and former Shamokin High School football trainer, died yesterday afternoon at 4:15 in Hamburg Sanitorium, where he was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis.

Mr. Shively was admitted first to Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Danville, on November 6, 1957.  He was taken to the Hamburg sanitarium on November 13, 1957.

Widely known as "Hank", Mr. Shively was born in Shamokin February 25, 1895, a son of the late Jacob and Sarah (Chubb) Shively.  He attended Stevens School.

Last employed as a night watchman at Shamokin Realty Company, Inc., Mr. Shively worked many years as a maintenance man when the former J. H. and C. K. Eagle Silk Mill was operated in the realty company building.

The late South Seventh Street resident served as trainer for Shamokin High School football teams from 1940 to 1948.  He taught approximately 35 classes in first aid under the American Red Cross program during and following World War II. He was awarded a certificate of achievement for his work as a local instructor.

Mr. Shively served 16 years as assessor in the Fourth Ward and held the post at the time of his death.  He was a member of the Past Presidents' Association of Patriotic Order Sons of America, and was secretary of Camp 30, Shamokin, when he was stricken ill.  He was secretary of West End Fire Company, also.

The late Mr. Shively was a member of Chestnut Street Methodist Church and Taghneghdoarus Tribe of Red Men.  He was married in Shamokin, April 16, 1921, to the former Miss Pearl Wolfgang.

Surviving in addition to the widow are a son, Lawrence, of Colmar; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph Spencer, Trevorton Road; Mrs. Seibert Salter, Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Nelson Woolcock, Paxinos; four brothers, Jacob and Arthur, Shamokin; Fred, Lewiston and Clarence, Kulpmont, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3:00 in Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets.  Rev. Donald Shafer, pastor of Chestnut Street Methodist Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.  Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening, from 7:00 to 9:00, and Monday until time of services.

Jacob Shively was born 29-Sep-1853 in Wurttemberg Germany and died 18-Dec-1898 in Northumberland Co., PA.  He was married to Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp). She was born 29-Dec-1858 in Lykens, Dauphin Co., PA and died 2-Apr-1953 in Lewisburg, Union Co., PA. Sarah was the daughter of George Chubb (Tschopp) and Magdalena Schoffstall.

Jacob and Sarah Shively are listed on the 1880 Shamokin Borough, Northumberland Co., PA census.  Jacob is age 27, a laborer in mines, born in Germany and Sarah is age 21 born in PA.  By 1900 Sarah J. is a widow and listed on the 1900 Borough of Shamokin, Northumberland Co., PA census.  Listed in the household is Sarah J., widow, age 41, son Charles age 19, son Jacob E. age 16, son Fredrick H. age 14, son Harry W. age 12, son Arthur J. age 9, son Francis H. age 5 and son Clarence W. age 3.  Sarah continues to be listed on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Northumberland Co., PA census records.

Explosion of Gas in a Shamokin Colliery Had Fatal Results

A blast in a gangway at the Luke Fidler Colliery to-day ignited a large body of gas, which exploded with great force.  Jacob Shively, Peter Sidrazki and Isaac Thomas were blown along the gangway a number of feet.  Thomas was the first to recover and, although he was terribly burned, he called to his companions and, when they responded, he told them to put on a brave front and follow him to the bottom of the shaft.  The force of the explosion was such that their lamps and been extinguished.

Suddenly Thomas was startled to see a bright light appear just in front of him. Shively's clothes were on fire.  Thomas rushed forward, closely followed by Sidrazki, to extinguish the flames, but Shively, crazed by burns and excitement, darted away from them.  A thrilling chase resulted, but soon ended, when Shively sank exhausted to the bottom of the gangway.  Then what remained of his burning clothing was torn off.  Meanwhile the explosion had attracted a number of miners to the scene.

They found Sidrazki dying, while Shively was all but dead.  Thomas, although he was burned about the hands and limbs and had inhaled fire, was not so seriously injured as his comrades.  The victims were stripped of their clothing and wrapped in oiled blankets,after which they were removed to their homes.  Shively's back, chest and face were shockingly burned.  While Sidrazki's abdomen was burned so badly that the intestines were exposed.  He died soon after reaching his home.  He was 20 years old and unmarried.

Shively, whose recovery impossible, is 44 years old and has a wife and five children.

Sarah Jane Shively did not remarry after the death of Jacob and lived to be 94 years old. Extracted from The Shamokin News Dispatch, Friday, April 3, 1953, Page 2, Column 5:

94-Year-Old City Resident Expires

Mrs. Sarah Shively, 94, of 633 Boyd Street, died yesterday afternoon in the Evangelical Church Home for the Aged, Lewisburg, where she was a patient for 17 months.

Mrs. Shively was born December 29, 1858, in Lykens, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Chubb.  She was married to the late Jacob Shively, who died 55 years ago.

Mrs. Shively was a resident of Shamokin for 75 years. She lived in Mount Carmel for several months before moving to Shamokin.  The late matron was one of the oldest members of St. John Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Survivors include five sons, Jacob, Arthur, and Franis, Shamokin; Frederick, Lewiston,and Clarence, Kulpmont;  20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 1:30 in the Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets.  Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Viewing will vein the funeral home Sunday  evening, from 7:00 to 9:00, and Monday until time of the services.  Rev. F. H. Fletcher, past of St. John Evangelical United Brethren Church, will officiate during services.

The parents of Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp) were George Tschopp born 28-Nov-1827 Northumberland Co., PA died 5-Jul-1900 Dauphin Co., PA.  He was married to Magdalena Schoffstall born 2-Jun-1833 Dauphin Co., PA died 10-Jan-1904 Dauphin Co., PA.  Extracted from The Harrisburg Telegraph, Friday Evening, July 13, 1900, Page 7, Column 2:

Gratz, Pa., July 12 --Last Friday morning the people of town were shocked to hear of the death of George Tschopp, sr., of town.  The evening previous he retired with his usual health. At about half-past 10 o'clock his wife heard a rumbling sound in his throat and by the time she had called the neighbors he had expired.  Interment took place in the Lutheran and Reformed cemetery Saturday forenoon, the Rev. Leopold, of Girardville, officiating in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. O. E. Pflueger.  Deceased was aged 72 years and leaves a widow and five grown children to mourn his loss.  He had been an old soldier of the War of the Rebellion. A grandson of the deceased was buried at the same time.

Gratz, Jan. 14. --  Mrs. Tschopp, widow of George Tschopp, died at Lykens on Sunday, and was brought to this place on Wednesday for burial.  The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Adam Zimmerman.
