This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Otis C. Shively And Wife Aileen R. West Who Lived In Mercer County, Ohio

Otis Shively/Aileen West Marriage
Information on the lineage of Otis C. Shively who lived in Mercer County, Ohio was requested by a Shively descendant. From information found it is believed that this lineage may be as follows: Ulrich Shively (1722-1776) and Elizabeth Thommen were the parents of Isaac David Shively. Isaac David Shively (1759-1823) and 2nd wife, Lydia Miller (1785-1805) were the parents of David Miller Shively. David Miller Shively (1803-1883) and 1st wife Hannah Clapp (1807-1842) were the parents of Harvey Shively. Harvey Shively (1836-1916) and wife Sarah Jane Lacy (1840-1892) were the parents of Levi Shively. Levi Shively (1871-1965) and wife Effie May Smith (1878-1950) were the parents of Otis C. Shively.  Otis C. Shively Shively married Aileen R. West.

David Shively/Hannah Clapp Marriage
David Miller Shively and 1st wife Hannah Clapp were married in Darke County, Ohio on 16-June-1825 (Volume A1, Page 68). David Shively was born 3-Oct-1803 and died 3-Jul-1883 in Mercer County, Ohio. He is buried in Burntwood Cem. Hannah was born 22-Nov-1807 and died 21-Aug-1842.  The following census records for this family were located with David's 2nd wife Esther Angel Rush:  1850 Adams Township, Darke County, Ohio listed David Shively age 47, Esther age 37, Mary A. age 22, William age 16, Harvey age 13, David Rush (stepson) age 13, Abraham age 12, David age 10, Isaac age 2; 1860 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed David Shively age 56, Easter age 46, Abram age 21, David age 18, Isaac age 12, Jacob age 10, Hetty age 7; 1870 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed David Shively age 66, Ester age 56, Abraham age 28, Isaac age 22, Calvin age 18; 1880 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed David Shively age 66, Ester age 66, Mary age 53, J. Cal age 30, and John age 19.

Harvey Shively/Sarah Jane Lacy Marriage
Harvey Shively was born 4-Mar-1836 Darke County, Ohio and died 29-Jan-1916. He is buried in Swamp College Cem., Mercer County, Ohio.  He married Sarah Jane Lacey on 7-Sep-1857 in Mercer County, Ohio.  Sarah was born 9-Aug-1840 and died 15-Oct-1892. The following census records for this family were located: 1860 Franklin Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed Harvy Shively age 23, Sarah age 19, Anna age 10 months; 1870 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed Harvy Shively age 34, Sarah age 30, Anna age 10, Margaret age 6, David age 2; 1880 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed Harvey Shiveley age 44, Sarah age 40, Margaret age 16, David age 12, Levi age 8, and Elmira age 8.   Harvey is living with his son Levi Shively on the 1900 census. The following newspaper obituary was extracted from The Celina Democrat, February 4, 1916, Page 1, Column 4:
The Grim Reaper
Harvey Shively, age 79 years, 10 months and 25 days died Saturday, January 29, at his home four miles northwest of Coldwater. Death was due to heart trouble.
Deceased was born in Darke county, March 4, 1836. March 18, 1854, he moved with his parents to Mercer county. July 25, 1857 he was married to Miss Sarah Jane Lacy, and to this union was born eight children. His wife and three children preceded him in death.
He served in the Civil War in Company D. 193rd regiment, O.V.I.
He is survived by one brother A. W. Shively, Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and two half-brothers, Isaac Shively, Manton, Mich., and Cal Shively, Lawrenceburg, Tenn.
The children are Mrs. John Shatto, Sidney, Ohio; Mrs. Frank Langel, Celina; David Shively, Bryant, Ind., Mrs. Henry Schwartze, of near Coldwater and Lee Shively of near Coldwater. He is survived by thirty grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1 at Beaver Chapel and interment in the cemetery nearby. Rev. F. P. Cordier officiated.

Levi "Lee" Shively was born 20-Sep-1871 in Mercer County, Ohio and died 16-Jun-1965 in Paulding County, Ohio. Lee Shively married Effie May Smith on 26-Aug-1897 in Mercer County, Ohio. Effie May was born 23-Oct-1878 and died 25-Oct-1950. The following census records for this family were located:  1900 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio Harvey Shively (father) born March 1836 age 64, Levi Shively (son) born September 1871 age 28, Effie M. born October 1879 age 29, Opal O. born June 1898 age 2;  1910 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed Levi Shively age 38, Effie M. age 31, Opal O. age 11, Ottis C. age 9, Lilian age 6, Albertine age 4, Vernon age 3 months,  Harvey (Father) age 74; 1920 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed Levi Shively age 48, Effie age 41, Ottis age 19, Lillian age 16, Arvesta age 13, Vernon age 9, Valore age 7, Eugene age 2, Myrna age 4 months;  1930 Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio Levi Shively age 58, Bessie age 51, Bernard age 20, Malore age 17, Paul age 12, Merna age 10 and Edwin age 8.

Otis C. Shively/Aileen R. West Marriage
Otis C. Shively was born 13-Oct-1900 in Mercer County, Ohio and died 25-Feb-1981. He is buried in Swamp College Cem., Mercer County. Otis married Aileen R. West on 7-Feb-1922 in Mercer County, Ohio.  The following census records for this family were located: 1930 Liberty Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed O. C. Shively age 29, Aleen age 30, Ruth age 7, Vivian age 2, Mary Lee age 1; 1940 Liberty Township, Mercer County, Ohio listed Otis Shively age 39, Aileen age 40, Ruth age 17, Joan age 12, Mary Lee age 11, Wanda age 9, Donald age 4.

Henry Shively And Wife Mary Nightheart Who Lived In Mason County, Michigan



The following information was located in the 1980 Mason County Michigan History, Pages 187 - 188 regarding Henry and Jacob Shively:
Following the Civil War, military duty, and a government land grant, two Ohio brothers, Jacob and Henry Shively and their families traveled to Custer Township, thus making them among the early settlers in the area.  Jacob, the eldest, born of Swiss parentage in 1826 was a solidier with the Indiana Volunteers.  Henry, born in Fairfield County, Ohio saw service as a member of the Indiana Infantry.  Both brothers left their native state, Ohio, going to Indiana and then to Wisconsin for a short time.  Living with Henry and their seven children was Mary’s mother, Hannah Nightheart.  The children were Margaret 1855, Lanty 1856, Elizabeth 1858, and Leota 1873.
Arriving in Custer in March 1876, Henry’s homestead property of 120 acres was registered with the Reed City, Michigan land office.  This farm came to be known as the Rosenow farm.  In 1879 their eighth and last child, Charles was born.  Mary’s mother, Hannah Nightheart, at age 89 died in 1880.  Mary followed her in death in 1884.  Both are buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Custer.

Located on the 1880 Mason County, Custer, Michigan census is the household of Henry Shively age 52, Farmer, born in Ohio (states father born in Switzerland and mother born in Darmstadt), wife Mary age 43 born in HemeDarmstadt, daughter Margrett age 25 born in Indiana, son Lanty age 23 born in Wisconsin, daughter Matilda age 19 born in Indiana, son George age 17 born in Indiana, son Harvey age 7 born in Indiana, and son Charles age 5 months (born in Dec) born in Michigan.

A review of the Michigan newspapers provided additional information on the children of Henry Shively and Mary Nightheart.  Located in The Ludington Daily News, Ludington, Michigan, Wednesday, September 20, 1933, Page 4, Column 7:
L. Shively Surprised On His 77th Birthday
CUSTER, Sept. 20.--Several friends and neighbors surprised L. Shively Sunda in honor of his 77th birthday anniversary.
All met at the home of Harvey Goff at Ford lake, with whom Mr. Shively makes his home, for a chicken dinner at noon.  A decorated birthday cake made by Mrs. Newton Goff centered the table.
This attending were Mr. and Mrs. Newton Goff and sons, Robert Goff, Charles Miles, Mr. and Mrs. A. Smedke and members of the Harvey Goff family.  Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mottl of Ludington called in the afternoon.

Extracted from The Ludington Daily News, Wednesday, July 29, 1925, Page 1, Column 5:
Geo. Shively, Long Lake, Dies At Brother's Home
George Shively, 62 years of age, unmarried, died late yesterday afternoon at the home of his brother, Charles Shively, 807 east Danaher street.
George Shively, who spent his childhood in Ohio and Indiana, came to Michigan and Mason county more than 50 years ago.  He had long made his home with his brother, Harvey Shively, near Long lake, not far from Fountain.
Afflicted with heart disease, George came to Ludington to his brother's home in March and remained for several weeks, then returned home feeling better.  A week ago, however, he was so much worse that he again came to Ludington to be cared for by his brother and sister-in-law.  He immediately took to his bed and was not again able to get up.
Surviving are three brothers, Land and Harvey of Sherman township and Charles of 807 east Danaher street.
The body was taken to Scottville to remain at the Stephens chapel until Thursday when funeral services will be held from the Congregational church in Custer at 2 o'clock pm. Interment will be made in Custer cemetery.

The following newspaper obituary was located in The Daily News, Ludington, Michigan, Thursday, October 26, 1939, Page 5, Column 2:
Harvey Shively, 68, Passes Suddenly
The community was saddened to hear of the death of Harvey Shively, 68, who passed away very suddenly Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mr.and Mrs. Harve Goff in Sherman township where he had made his home for many years. Coroner Lloyd Stephens was called and pronounced death due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
Mr. Shively had lived in and around Sherman township for many years and was well-known and liked by everyone.  He had  always been very fond of hunting and outdoor sports and made many friends.
Surviving are a brother, Charles Shively of Ludington and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Stephens funeral home and burial will be made in the Custer cemetery.

Charles H. Shively Passes On Monday
Charles Henry Shively, 60, passed away on Monday afternoon at his home at 807 East Danaher street following an illness of some duration.
Mr. Shively was born on Dec. 11, 1879, in Custer township, Mason county, where he lived for a number of years.  A resident of Ludington for 35 years, he was a member of St. John's Lutheran church.  He was employed at the Star Watch Case company.
Married in April, 1900, to Ottille Tonn,who survives him, he is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Shields of Elgin, Ill., and Mrs. Lena Richardson of Ludington; three sons, Arthur Shively of Manistee and Clayton and Robert Shively of Ludington, and nine grandchildren.
The body will rest at Dorrell chapel until Wednesday afternoon when it will be returned to the home at 807 East Danaher street.  Funeral services will be held at 1:45 p.m. Friday from the home and at 2 p.m. from St. John's Lutheran church, Rev. William Opitz officiating.
Interment will be made in Lakeview cemetery.
