Shively and Rosalie Minerva Rice who lived in Taylor County, KY then moved to Kansas, returned to Taylor County, KY and passed away living in Mississippi County, MO.

Listed on the 1860 Division No 1, Taylor County, KY census are R. W. Shively age 33, wife Rose A. age 26, son Jno. A. age 9, daughter T. Jane age 6, daughter Sarah E. age 4 and daughter Mary V. age 2.  Located on the 1880 Mansville District, Taylor County, KY census is Robert Shively age 54, wife Roseallie age 46, son David R. age 19, son Samuel age 15, daughter Margrett age 10, daughter Rosealli age 8, and son Henry age 6.

Thrisa Jane Shively was born on 25-Oct-1852(1853) in Taylor County, KY and died 3-Mar-1886. She is buried in the Saint Francis de Sales Cemetery in Taylor County, KY.  Thrisa Jane married George W. Bradley on 28-Apr-1871 in Franklin County, KS.  Listed on the 1880 Mansville District, Taylor County, KY census are George Bradley age 30, wife Thresa age 27, daughter Rosa age 8, daughter Ella age 6, daughter Elinor age 4, and son David age 2.  George W. Bradley remarried after the death of Thrisa Jane Shively Bradley. Listed on the 1900 Ohio Township, Mississippi County, MO is the household of Charles Wyatt born Sep-1867 age 32, wife Bertha A. born Jul-1882 age 17, step father in law George W. Bradley born Jun-1850 age 49, married 13 years, mother in law Matilda E. born Dec-1861 age 38, brother in law William J. born Jul-1888 age 11, brother in law Frank W. born May-1894 and step brother in law Elmer born Feb-1878 age 22. George W. Bradley was born 17-Jun-1850 in Missouri and died 8-Nov-1912 in Mississippi County, MO.  Place of burial is listed as Charleston, MO on his MO death certificate.

David R. Shively has not been located on the records after 1885 in Lincoln County, KS. Any additional information on him would be appreciate.   David R. Shively was the son of Robert W. Shively and Rosalie Minerva Rice. Robert W. Shively was the son of John B. Shively and Sarah Heaverin.  John B. Shively was the son of John Shively and Susannah Hayden. It is believed that John Shively was the son of Michael Shively.

Mary Victoria Shively was born on 1-Nov-1858 in Taylor County, KY and died 6-Apr-1897 in Independence County, AR.  Mary was the daughter of Robert W. Shively (born 8-Jan-1826  Taylor County, KY died 18-Aug-1903 Mississippi County, MO) and Rosalie M. Rice (born 11-Mar-1834 Taylor County, KY died 18-Dec-1897 Mississippi County, MO).  Robert W. A cousin, Fred "Joe" Luke, recently found the newspaper obituary for Thrisie Margaret Thompson Shively.  Thrisie Margaret "Maggie" Thompson Shively was the daughter of John Barton Thompson and Mary "Molly" E. Wise. Maggie was born 27-Feb-1876 and died 2-Nov-1929. Thrisie married Henry Rice Shively in Shelby County, MO on 4-Apr-1899 in Shelby County, MO (Shelby County Marriage Book 5, Page 23). Henry Rice Shively was the son of Robert W. Shively and Rosella Rice. He was born on 18-Mar-1874 in Kansas and died 11-Nov-1958 in Shelby County, MO.

Death  Of Mrs. Henry R. Shively

Mrs. Henry R. Shively, one of the splendid residents of this community, died at her home near Lakenan, Saturday morning at 1:25 o'clock, after an illness of several months of cancer from which she was a great sufferer.

Thirsie M. Thompson was born at Lebanon, Kentucky, February 27, 1876 and was 53 years, 9 months and 5 days old. She was united in marriage to Henry R. Shively in 1899, and to this union there were born six children, Elsie, Wesley, Hershal, Shelby, Vincil and Mary Rose, the oldest daughter, Elsie, died in 1910. Mrs. Shively and family lived in the Union Chapel vicinity, where they lived until several years ago when they moved to a farm near Lakenan.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband and five children, one grandchild, her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Thompson of Lebanon, Kentucky and two brothers in Kentucky and one brother, Thos. Thompson of Neponsit, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. J. P. Maupin, of Bradford, Ill., the latter two being here to attend the funeral.

Mrs. Shively was a loving and devoted wife and mother, ever doing something for the happiness and comfort of her family, a kind and sincere neighbor and friend, and one who lived her christianity every day of her life, hers was life of service to her fellowman, and she has left to her family a priceless heritage, and her memory will linger long in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held from St. John's Catholic Church in this city at 9:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Fr. Grace, of Shelbina, to a large concourse of relatives and friends and burial was in the Catholic cemetery.

One area where our Shively family was located is Shelby County, Missouri.  Several of the small towns in this Northeast Missouri county include Hunnewell, Shelbina, Shelbyville, and Clarence.

Luke.  Henry Rice Shively was born 18-March-1874 in Kansas.  He died 11-November-1958 in Shelbina, Shelby County, Missouri.  (His family had moved to Kansas but returned to Taylor County, Kentucky sometime after his birth). He was the son of Robert W. Shively and Rosella Rice. Henry Rice Shively was married to Theresa (Thrisie) Margaret Thompson on 4-April-1899 in Shelby County, Missouri (Shelby County Marriage Book 5, Page 23).  Thrisie Thompson was born 27-February-1876 in Kentucky and died 2-November-1929 in Lakenan, Shelby County, Missouri.  She was the daughter of John Barton Thompson and Mary (Molly) Wise. To this union were born: Elsie M. born 1900 died 1910, Wesley Barton born 3-July-1902, Herschel Thomas born 27-August-1905, Shelby Owen born December-1909, Vincil Elbert born 12-June-1912 and Mary Rose born 23-November-1914.

A Sad Accident

A most distressing accident occurred in this county near New Market (Marion County, Kentucky), early Monday morning, May 2, 1904, which resulted in the death of James Ben Thompson, 21 years of age, a son of Mr. John Thompson, a well known farmer of that vicinity.

Young Thompson had suspicions that a thief was making raids on his father's corn crib and by means of a string and shot gun laid a trap to shoot the supposed burglar. On several previous occasions he had gone to the crib but took the precaution to unloosen the string before opening the door, but on Monday morning he was in haste and forgot about the trap. He gave the door a quick jerk, instantly there was the report of the gun and the contents of the weapon ploughed its way through his right breast and on into his heart. He fell and died almost instantly. The accident and unfortunate circumstance surrounding cast a shadow of gloom not alone over the family of the dead boy, but the neighborhood as well, and the affair is regretted by all.

At the inquest held Wednesday the Coroner's verdict was that the deceased came to his death by accident.

The funeral services were held at Calvary Wednesday morning, with Requiem, Mass, after which the remains were interred in the congregational cemetery. ---Lebanon, Ky., Enterpise.

Mr. Thompson was a brother of Mrs. H. R. Shively and George Thompson of Prairie View, and was known to many of our readers as he visited in Missouri about two years ago and his sad and untimely death was a shock to his relatives and friends here.

James Walden, of Pettis county has purchased 80 acres of land east of Prairie View church and expects to move back to this county about December. He purchased 40 acres from George Perry and the Jake Salmon 40 acres from H. R. Shively, consideration $70 per acre.

Death Of Elsie Shively

Elsie May Shively, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Shively died at their home near Union Chapel last Friday night after a long and lingering illness of typhoid-pneumonia.

Elise, was about eleven years old and the only daughter of her parents, she was a bright and sweet little girl, a loving daughter and the pride of her parents. She suffered many weeks, and all that medical aid could do was done for her relief and that she might live, but the disease had too strong a hold on her.

Funeral services were held at the Catholic church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock and her remains were laid to their final resting place in the Catholic cemetery.

The pall-bearers were four little girls dressed in white, and all school mates of Elsie they were Jewell and Lillian Hawker, Gladys Mayes and Eula Walden.

She leaves to mourn her death a grief stricken father and mother and three brothers.

To the sorrowing ones is extended the sympathy of the community in their sorrow.

Robert W Shively was born 8-Jan-1826 and died 18-Aug-1903 in Mississippi Co., MO.  Robert was the son of John B Shively and Sarah Heaverin.  Robert married Rosalie M Rice on 6-Feb-1848 in Green Co., KY.  Rosalie (Rosella) was born 11-Mar-1834 and died 18-Dec-1897 in Mississippi Co., MO.  She was the daughter of John Rice and Mary Ann Newton.  

Robert and Rosalie Shively are found on the 1850, 1860, and 1880 Taylor Co., KY census.  Robert is listed on the 1900 Mississippi Co., MO census.   It is believed they were living in Taylor Co., KY in 1870 but no census record for the family has been found.  From the Missouri death certificate for daughter, Margaret Shively Raffety Vowels her birthplace  in approximately 1871 was Spurlington, Taylor Co., KY.  From the Missouri death certificate for daughter, Rosa Shively her birthplace on 17-Feb-1872 was Taylor Co., KY.

Land deeds in Taylor County, KY indicate that Robert W and Rosalie Shively had sold their land holdings in KY 1868.  In Taylor County, KY Deed Book 10, Page 287 dated February 1879 John Rice of the first part and R W Shively and Rosallie Shively, his wife, of the second part all of Taylor County are given 200 acres for the "natural love and affection John Rice has for the parties of the second part".  From the Missouri death records for daughters born about 1871 and 1872 it is believed that they were in KY.  From the Missouri death record for son Henry Rice Shively his birthplace in 1874 is listed as Kansas.

Robert W. Shively and wife, Rosalie M., are buried in Calvary Cemetery, Charleston, Mississippi Co., MO.

Help is requested in locating the family of Robert and Rosalie Shively in 1870.  It is believed they were in the area of Spurlington, Taylor Co., KY but the census record has not been located.

Samuel Joseph "Crumb" Shively was born on 30-Jan-1866 in Taylor County, KY. He was the son of Robert W. Shively and Rosella Rice. He was the grandson of John B. Shively and Sarah Heaverin. He was the great grandson of John Shively and Susanna Hayden. Samuel Joseph Shively died on 27-Jan-1951 in London, Laurel Co., KY.  He is buried in Faulkner Chapel Cemetery (Swanpond), Knox Co., KY.  He was married 1st to Nancy Ellen Shelton.  She was born 23-Apr-1871 and died 27-Mar-1924.  She is buried in Faulkner Chapel Cemetery. 

Samuel "Crumb" Shively was married 2nd to Marinda Lawson.  Marinda Lawson was married possibly twice before, 1st to Hugh Meradeth (Meredith) and 2nd Dillard Taylor.

The lineage that is followed in this week's blog is from that of a son of Samuel Joseph Shively and Nancy Shelton. Roy Lee Shively was born 19-Feb-1897 and died 24-Nov-1983.  It is the history of the name Lee and Leeann that follows.

Roy L. Shively Dies

Roy Lee Shively, 86, of Shawneetown, passed away at his home at 10:55 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, following a heart attack.  He was born on Feb. 19, 1897 to Samuel J and Nancy Shelton Shively in Kentucky.  He was married to Marion Margaret Kunz, who survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Morton Lee Shively and Richard Shively, both of Shawneetown, and Dr. M. A. Shively of Ewen, Michigan; one brother, Joe Shively of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Edith Diamond of Charleston, Mo.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 11 a.m. at Charleston, Mo., with the Rev. Bob Burk, the Rev. John Barlett and the Rev. Howerton officiating.  Interment was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Charleston.  McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston was in charge of arrangements.

Last Rites Held For Tony Kunz

(Special To The Standard) CHARLESTON, Nov. 3 -- Funeral services were held at 2:30 this afternoon for Charles Anthony "Tony" Knuz, 63, of Wyatt.  Mr. Kunz died of a heart ailment. He was born July 20, 1889 in New Richmond, Ohio.

Mr. Kunz was an oil salesman employed by the Economy Oil Company.  He was also a member of the Catholic Church of Wyatt. He had been a resident of this community for the last 45 years.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Lee, and three daughters, Mrs. Roy Shively of Marion, Ill., Mrs. Allen Moreton of Wyatt, and Mrs. Glen Hillhouse of Route 3, Charleston.  He also leaves a brother, George of New Richmond, and four sisters, Bertha Kunz, Mrs. C. E. Herf, and Mrs. T. J. Regan, all of New Richmond and Mrs. Richard Martin of Cincinnati.

The funeral was held at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Charleston.  Burial was held in the I.O.O.F Cemetery.

Charleston Woman Dies At Home Of Her Daughter

(Special To The Standard) CHARLESTON -- Mrs. Lee Ann Hutcheson, 91, widow of the late J. V. Hutcheson, died at 6:45 a.m. today at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Byrne, near Wyatt.  She was born May 4, 1865 in Murray, Ky., and moved to Mississippi county 88 years ago with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Columbus Owen.

Bonifield of Charleston and Mrs. Fred Williams and Mrs. Hunter Byrne of Rt. 3, Charleston; by three sons: Emmett of Evansville, Ind.; Raymond of East Prairie and Clint of Rt. 2, Charleston; 22 grand children; 35 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.  One of her grandchildren is J. Abner Beck, county superintendent of schools.

The body will lie in state at the Nunnelee Funeral Home her until time for services which will be conducted at  2 p.m. from the First Baptist church with Rev. A. B. Cooper, pastor of the Wyatt Baptist church; Rev. Robert Burke, pastor of the Wyatt Methodist church, and Rev. D. D. Bledsoe, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating and burial will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

The above articles establish the lineage behind those who descend from Samuel Joseph "Crumb" Shively and have either Lee or Leeann (Lee Ann) in their name.   During the research on Samuel Joseph Shively several interesting facts or articles were found.  

The nickname of "Crumb" associated with Samuel Joseph Shively was listed with several family histories.  On the 1930 Bell County, KY census is the household of Crumb Shively age 61, wife Marinda age 41, step-daughter Mollie Meradith age 19, step-son Hugh Meradith age 16, step-son Edward Taylor age 8 and son Harlin Shively age 1 year and 9 months.

Marinda Lawson Shively

Mrs. Marinda Lawson Shively, a well-known resident of Stoney Fork, Ky., passed away Friday, April 20, 1973, in the Pineville Community Hospital following a long illness.  She was born November 30, 1888 at Beverly, Ky., daughter of the late Rant and Charity Taylor Lawson.  Mrs. Shively was a member of the Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Bell County.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Lawson and Mrs. Mollie Lawson both of Stoney Fork; fours sons, Sam Meredith of Tallahassee, Fla., Hugh Meredith of Stoney Fork, Jim Meredith of Turtle Town, Tenn., Harlan Shively of Killeen, Texas; 36 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 22, 1973, at 2 p.m. at the Arnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thea O. Carter officiating.  Interment will be in the Lawson Cemetery, Mud Lick, with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Hunting For Our Roots - New Shively Genealogy History Book Compiled By Beverly Colvin Smith - Descendants Of John B. Shively, Taylor County, KY

John B. Shively Family History

A new Shively family genealogy book has been published.  The book is entitled "Hunting For Our Roots, The Shively And White Family", and is an outstanding compilation by Beverly Colvin Smith on the descendants of John B. Shively and Sarah "Sallie" Heaverin who lived in Taylor County, KY.  The information for the book was researched by Suzy Bracey and Beverly Colvin Smith.  The book is dedicated to Cordelia A. Shively White, Elijah C. "Lige" White and their son's Oliver White and Charles Shively White.  The book contains over 300 pages of many pictures and the Shively and White genealogies.    

For the Shively's the first ancestor mentioned is John Shively and wife, Susannah Hayden, whose marriage is recorded in Washington County, KY marriage records 10-Oct-1794.  They were the parents of Sarah "Sally" Shively, Henry H. Shively, John B. Shively, Susannah Shively and Ann Nancy Shively.

John B. Shively married Sarah "Sallie" Heaverin in Meade County.  They were the parents of the following chidden:  Robert W. Shively born 8-Jan-1826, William Thomas Shively born 8-Mar-1830, John Henry Shively born 29-Apr-1832, Elizabeth Jane Shively born 24-Mar-1834, James Martin Shively born 5-Feb-1836, Stephen Mitchell Shively born 26-Jan-1837, David Alexander Shively born 29-Dec-1838, Mahala Shively born 11-Feb-1841, Samuel Shively born 25-Feb-1842, Joseph H. Shively born 17-Nov-1844, Perry Sylvester Shively born 4-Oct-1848 and Susan Mary Shively born 10-Sep-1850.

There are many Shively researchers that are working on the genealogies of the descendants of John Shively and Susannah Hayden.  This new book by Beverly Colvin Smith is very important to the research of these Shively lines because it is the first book which has been published for the documentation of these lineages.  Many of the children of John B. Shively and Sarah "Sallie" Heaverin left Taylor County, KY after the Civil War. Several of these Shively descendants have done genealogy research but have not published their work.  Well documented works include the Robert W. Shively descendants who live in Shelby County, MO; William Thomas Shively descendants who now live in the Omaha, NE area; John Henry Shively descendants who live in the Crawford County, KS area; and Stephen Mitchell Shively descendants who live in Marion County, KY and the state of Washington. This book is further very important because it adds to the work on the above John B. Shively children and documents the lineage of son, Perry Sylvester Shively. Perry Sylvester Shively remained in Taylor County, KY and is an important link to Taylor County for those families who moved away. 

It is important to note that this book has been compiled by Beverly Colvin Smith who lives in Campbellsville, Taylor County, KY where the John B. Shively family lived.  Your editor of this blog has worked on this Shively line for over 40 years.  I highly recommend this new book to any Shively researcher and especially those with lineages starting with John Shively and Susannah Hayden.
