Edward Shively was born ca. 1864 and died on 11-Feb-1925 in Summit County, OH. Edward Shively is buried in Wooster Cemetery, Wooster, Wayne County, OH. He and his sister, Anna R. Shively Annat share a tombstone. Edward was the son of  Augustus R. Shively (born ca. 1830 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA) and Martha A. Shively age 39, wife Martha age 38, daughter Ellen D. age 13, son John McB age 11, son Jesse age 9, son Edward age 6, son George J. age 5 and daughter Martha age 2. On the 1880 Wooster, Wayne County, OH census are John McBride age 70, wife Mary J. age 56, nephew Edward Shively age 16, nephew George age 18 and servant Effie Miller age 17. Located on the 1900 City of Akron, Akron Township, Summit County, OH census in the household of Mr. Seibert is boarder Edward Shively born Apr-1874 age 26. On the 1910 Precinct B, Akron City, Akron, Summit County, OH census in the household of Mr. Seibert is roomer Edward Shively age 41.  On the 1920 Akron Township, Akron, OH, Summit County, OH census in the household of Charles Seibert is roomer Edward Shively age 57.

Restaurant Owner Many Years Dies

Edward Shively, Who Had Lived In City For 45 Years, Succumbs To Illness

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 8 o’clock for the late Edward Shively, 62, retired confectioner and restaurateur, in the home of his nephew, Tim J. Seibert, 166 S. First st., where Mr. Shively died Wednesday afternoon, following a short illness. The body will be taken to Wooster where services will be held Saturday afternoon, followed by burial in the family burial plot.

Mr. Shively was born in Wooster, but had lived in Akron for 45 years. He engaged in the confectionery and restaurant business and owned several of these establishments in Akron. He retired eight years ago. A brother, John Shively, and a sister, Mrs. Charles Seibert, of Akron, are his only near relatives surviving.

Anna R. Shively was born in 1861 and died on 27-Feb-1922 in East Orange, New Jersey.  Anna is buried in Wooster Cemetery, Wooster, Wayne County, OH and shares a tomb stone with her brother, Edward Shively (1864-1925).Anna was the daughter of Augustus R. Shively (born ca. 1830 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA) and Martha A. Robison (daughter of Thomas Robison and Jemima Dickey).  Anna R. Shively was married to Hugh Mann Annat on 7-Aug-1884 in Wayne County, OH.  Anna and Hugh later divorced.  Hugh M. Annat was born on 15-Apr-1860 in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland and died on 26-Sep-1931 in Miami, Miami-Dade County, FL.  He married a second time to Elizabeth “Betty” Dunlop in Forfarshire, Scotland.

Listed on the 1880 Wooster City, Wayne County, OH census is the household of Martha E. Shively age 49, daughter Ellen B. age 23, daughter Anna R. age 18 and daughter Martha L. age 12.  Listed on the 1910 East Orange City, Essex County, NJ census in the household of Frank Harrison age 48 is roomer Anna R. Annat age 47. On the 1920 East Orange City, 2nd Election District, Essex County, NJ in the household of Ada M. Robinson age 49 is lodger Anna R. Annat age 56.

WOOSTER, OHIO. August 7. — The wedding of Mr. H. M. Annat and Miss Anna R. Shively, two of Wooster’s most estimable and popular young people, occurred at the residence of the bride’s mother to-day at noon. A small company of invited guests made up of the relatives and special friends of the young couple witnessed the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. T. A. McCurdy, of this city, assisted by Rev. W. S. P. Cochran, of Middletown, Penn. The wedding was one of the most pleasant social events of the season, and the happy couple are the recipients of the hearty congratulations and well wishes of a large circle of admiring friends. The groom is a native of Scotland, and during the past five years has been engaged with his brother in a profitable dry goods business in this city. The bride has been a life-long resident of Wooster, and because of her bright and sunny disposition, her amiability and keen intelligence, has for several years been a great favorite in the leading social circles of Wooster. Mr. and Mrs. Annat left on the evening train for a wedding trip through the Northern Lake Regions.

The death of Hugh M. Annat was posted in the Springfield News-Sun, Springfield, Ohio, Tuesday, September 29, 1931, Page 8, Column 6:

BELLFONTAINE, Sept. 29. —Hugh M. Annat, 72, native of Scotland, long identified in business in Bellefontaine, died Saturday night at his home in Miami, Fla., according to word received by his nephew, George Esplin, of this city. He carried on an extensive dry goods business here in the Denman room for every 25 years.

Glenisla Romance Recalled

Death of Mr. Hugh Mann Annat

A Glenisla romance of six years ago is recalled by the death of Mr. Hugh Mann Annat at his residence in Miami, U.S.A.

Mr. Annat, who was reputed to be a millionaire, married Miss Betty Dunlop, a Glenisla Hotel assistant, after a whirlwind wooing.

He was a native of Kirriemuir, where he served his apprenticeship as a draper. Subsequently, he went to Ohio, where he was very successful in business, and after retiring, amassed a fortune in real estate.

Six years ago, when he was on a visit to Scotland and while at Glenisla he was the central figure in a romance. He was resident in Glenisla Hotel, and coming home ill from one of his fishing expeditions, was nursed back to health by Miss Betty Dunlop, the daughter of a Kippen farmer.

He married here not long afterwards in Glenisla Parish Church.

Hugh M. Annat Seeks Refuge From Downpour In Hotel In Forfarshire, Scotland, And Is Captivated By Kindness Of Betty Dunlop

EDINBURGH, Scotland — Cupid, wrapped in a raincoats, led Hugh M. Annat, millionaire of Miami, Fla., into a rain storm while he was touring Scotland and to escape the downpour Annat took refuge in the Glenisla Hotel at Forfarshire, where Miss Betty Johnstone Dunlop was the housemaid. The Scottish lassie impressed the millionaire with her kindness, in face her endeavors to make his stay at the hostelry pleasant captivated him completely.

Now the little hotel maid is Mrs. Annat and instead of waiting on the guests at the Glenisla Hotel she is wearing fine raiment and strings of pearls and is contemplating a honeymoon tour of the world.

Ceremony Takes Place In Church Close To Hotel Where Couple Met

The ceremony took place in the parish church of Glenisla, a picturesque Old World structure, only a few yards from the hotel where the couple first met.

Thought the date of the wedding had been kept more or less secret, there was a good gathering of neighbors in the little church, in addition to the dozen or so invited guests. The best man was James Berry, proprietor of the hotel, who turned out in full and imposing Highland costume.

The bride was given away by her brother-in-law, S. Young. She wore a frock of dawn pink georgette completely veiled with ivory Spanish lace. Miss May and Miss Agnes Dougall, her nieces, carried the train of her long veil.

Will Sail For America In November And Then Make A Tour Of The World

After the ceremony the bridal party and guests returned to the hotel, where the wedding cake was cut and a luncheon followed. The bridegroom’s gifts to his bridge were a magnificent mole coat and a string of pearls clasped with a stud of platinum and sapphires, while she presented him with a pair of gold and platinum cuff links.

The couple passed a few days of their honeymoon at the Glenisla Hotel before setting out for a tour of Scotland. They will sail for America November 7. It is understood they will go on a world cruise this winter.

A strange story has developed in the disappearance of Marion F. Shively, a foreman in the Globe Fixture Company's Factory.

On July 20 Shively married Miss Mary Conahan, of 1216 West Eighth Street, and took up rooms at 612 West Seventh Street, where he formerly roomed.  The marriage created a sensation among some people, who said that there were objections to the wedding from Wooster, O., Shively's former home.  The landlady heard of the talk and ordered Shively out.

Threats From Wooster.

Shively moved to 620 Mound Street.  While at this place, it is stated, Shively was threatened from Wooster.

Saturday night, Sept. 4, Shively drew his pay at the Globe office.  He has not returned.  The landlady stated that he had left the city with his wife.

Shively was employed  by the Globe Company for a year and a half, was a valuable mechanic and foreman and received a big salary.  His sudden disappearance, coupled with rumors, caused a surprise in the workshops.

Conahan, Shively's father-in-law, stated Saturday that Shively was continually worried by someone at Wooster.  He heard of Shively again as living at 40 North Perry Street, Cleveland, O.

Tried To Leave Cleveland.

(Post Special Service)  Cleveland, O., Nov. 20. -- Marion F. Shively, who is said to be the principal in a strange story at Cincinnati and who is living with his wife at 40 North Perry Street here in furnished rooms, attempted to leave Saturday morning, but was detained by the landlady.  Shively seemed to be excited and refused to make any statement.  The couple owed rent.  Their trunks and baggage were held.  They have not been seen since.

Francis (Frank) Marion Shively was the son of Joseph A. and Margaret Shively. He was born ca. 1861.  Joseph and Margaret were located on the 1870 and 1880 Wayne County, Ohio census records.  Children born to Joseph and Margaret include:  Joseph A. born 1858, Edward born 1860, Francis M born 1861, Allie born 1866, Louella born 1868, Lafayette born 1870, William E born 1872, Everett E born 1873, and Florence A born 1877.

The marriage of Marion F. Shively is recorded in the Hamilton County, Ohio marriage records.  Recorded is the marriage of Marion F. Shively to Margaret M. Conhan on 20-July-1897 by Roman Catholic Priest F A. Winsey.  The marriage is recorded as Marriage 836C from marriage Volume 134, Page 418.  

Part of the threats that troubled Marion F. Shively might be explained from a legal document found in the Wayne County, Ohio records.  The document concerns a matter between the guardian of Margaret Shively, who is listed as an imbecile, and her heirs.  In the document it mentions "plaintiff says that the whereabouts of said Frank M. Shively have not been known for some years.  That he left his wife and children about years ago, and it is not known whether his is alive or not.  That Emily Shively was his wife, and the following children Ella Shively who is of age, Edwin Shively, Joseph Shively and Susanne Shively minors over the age of 14 years  and Glenn Shively, Pearl Shively and Earl Shively, Eva Shively minors under the age of 12 years....


Additional information on the family of Francis and Emily Shively was located by researching Emily Shively.  She was the daughter of John Crites and can be found on the 1880 Wayne County, OH census with her father John Crites, 1900 Cuyahoga County, OH census with her children and father, 1910 Ashtabula County, OH census, and 1920 Cuyahoga County, OH census with her married daughter Pearl Maus.   Emily Crites Shively died on 7-Aug-1925 and is buried in the Lake View Cemetery, 12316 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH.


Information from the 1900 census lists the following birth dates for the children of Francis M. Shively and Emily:   Ella born July 1883, Edwin born November 1885, Joseph born December 1887, Glenn born June 1892, twins Earl and Pearl born November 1894,  and Eva born June 1896.  No information could be located on daughter, Susanne.

There is still more information needed to complete the genealogy of Augustus R. Shively (A. R. Shively) who lived in Wayne County, Ohio.  Following is an attempt to compile what information was found for this article.

Augustus R. Shively was born about 1830 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.  He is listed on the 1850 Berks County, Pennsylvania census in the household of who is assumed his mother, Keziah Shively (born about 1808). Also listed are a possible sister, Keziah age 15 and brother, William age 10. 

A. R. Shively was married in Wayne County, Ohio on 15-May-1856 to Martha A. Robison.  She was the daughter of Thomas Robison and Jemima Dickey.

A.R. Shively, "Kissiah" Shively, and William Shively are listed on the 1860 Wayne County, Ohio census in the town of Wooster.   Also listed in the household is Martha, wife of A.R., and children Ella and John. 

    

In the Wooster Republican, Thursday, May 5, 1859, Page 3, Column 1 is located the following article which indicates that Mr. Shively was a business man in Wooster having purchased a foundry and machine shop.  There are numerous advertisements that appear in the Wooster newspaper.  An example of one of these ads is above.

   By advertisement in another column it will be seen that Mr. A. R. Shively has purchased the entire Foundry and Machine Shop of Mr. Harrison, and will push the business in a more extensive scale than ever.  It is his determination to not only do all kinds of casting, and mill work, but to build and repair engines of every description.  Mr. Shively has had long experience in the business, is an industrious, energetic, thorough business man, and we have no doubt will largely increase the business of this well known establishment.  He will keep the most competent workmen, and of course will turn out the best of work.  We know, from experience, that he has in his employ, one very skillful workman, Mr. Peabody, who has few equals in his department, in Ohio.

Mr. Shively had a financial loss from a fire which occurred in his stable in 1866.  Recorded in the Wooster Republican, Thursday, June 21, 1866, Page 4, Column 1:

Fire In Wooster

   Our citizens were aroused by the cry of fire, on Monday morning last, about 2 A.M., which proved to be in the stable and adjoining building of A. R. Shively.  The engines were on hand as soon as possible, but the fire had made such headway that the buildings were nearly destroyed.  The loss to Mr. Shively will be from $500 to $600, there being no insurance.  The fire was undoubtedly the work on an incendiary, as it commenced in the hay in the upper story, and there had been no fire kept in the building for some days previous.  There was a Meat Market in one of the lower rooms, being the only place where any fire had been kept in the building.  Mr. Shively intends rebuilding immediately, and the Meat Shop will be carried on as usual at the same place.

A. R. Shively died at the age of 40 in 1870.  Located in the Wooster Republican, Thursday, February 17, 1870, Page 3, Column 5 is the following:

DIED - February 7th, 1870, Mr. A. R. SHIVELY, in the 40th year of his age.

MARTHA A. SHIVELY is the widow of A. R. Shively, one of Wooster’s formerly well-known citizens.  She was born in the house where she now lives, in Wooster, May 5, 1831.  Her family is more fully given under the name of her brother, Dr. James D. Robison, on another page.

On May 15, 1869, she was united in marriage with A. R. Shively, a native of Reading, Penn.  At the age of twenty-two he came to Wooster, and embarked in the foundry business, which he had learned in his native State, carrying it on in connection with an uncle.  Here he lived the rest of his life, dying in February, 1870, when but thirty-nine years of age.  By this marriage Mrs. Shively became the mother of six children:  Ellen D., wife of Rev. W. S. Cochran, of Caryopolis; John McB., a resident of Montana;  Ann, Mrs. Hugh M. Annat, of Wooster; Edward, living in Cleveland, Ohio; and George I. and Martha L., with their mother.  Mr. Shively was one of Wooster's progressive business men, and his loss was felt in the community, where he was esteemed as an upright man and a good citizen.  Since he husband's demise, Mrs. Shively has continued to live in her old home.  She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wooster, and is much respected.

Who are Francis M Shively and wife, Emily Crites who are located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio records? There are several records which were located that give the researcher working on this family some clues.

Three Marriages Among Kin Take Place In One Day

Is there a matrimonial germ and is it contagious?

That is the questions asked by Mrs. Anna Rapp, 891 E. 73^rd street, and Mrs. Emily Shively, 1202 E. 170^th street, five members of whose homes, together with a neighbor of Mrs. Shively, were principals in three marriages yesterday.

It all began when a week or so ago Guy C. Campion, 30, pressman with the Cleveland Press and son of Mrs. Rapp, announced he a Miss Beaber, 23 who had been making her home with her fiance’s mother, were to be married yesterday.  Not to be outdone by his brother, Ray Rapp, 22 motion picture operator, and Miss Eva Shively, 20, 12 E. 170^th street, decided Tuesday to make it a double wedding.

At the last moment Joseph F. Shively,  29, brother of Miss Shively, made it known that he and Miss Ruth Prill, 20, a neighbor living at 1136 E. 169^th street, had likewise determined to get married.

Licenses were issued yesterday to all there couples.  The first two couples were married in the forenoon by Justice W. J. Zoul.  Mr. Shively and Miss Prill were married by Rev. Jacob H. Merkel, 65 Emily stree, East Cleveland.

The marriage for Francis M Shively and Emily Crites is located in Wayne County, Ohio.  Per the record they were married on July 24, 1882.

The 1900 Cuyahoga County, Newburgh Township, lists Emily Shively as head of the household.  She records that she has given birth to eight children and that all eight are still living.  Listed on this census are seven of the eight children.  Also living with the family is her father, John Crites, a widow, who was born September 1832 in Ohio.   Listed on this record are the following children and dates of birth for Francis and Emily:  Ella M born July 1883; Edwin W born April 1885; Joseph F born December 1887;  Glen born June 1892; Earl born April 1894; twin sister Pearl born April 1894;  and Eva born June 1896.    It is not known why Emily’s husband, Francis Shively, is not listed with the family.  A date of death  was not located for him but he does not appear on any of the census records with the family.  Most of the 1890 census records were destroyed but had they survived it is probable he would have been located with the family. 

           Emily Shively is listed on the 1910 Ashtabula County, Ohio census with a job listed that she runs the district school wagon.  Emily is listed in the Ohio death records as being born on December 27, 1864 and died August 7, 1925. She was buried in the Lakeview Cemetery.  Her parents are listed as John Crites and Mary Weinner (Waisner).

           Francis M Shively is listed on the 1870 and 1880 Wayne County, town of Wooster, Ohio census records.  He is in the household of Joseph A Shively and wife, Margaret.  Records show that a Joseph Shively married Josephine Margaret Poncler in Cuyahoga County, Ohio on 29-August-1857.   From these census reports Francis M Shively would have been born about 1861.
