George A. Shively And Wife, Annie E. Rice, Who Lived In Blair County, Pennsylvania

George A. Shively was born 11-May-1864 in Juniata County, Pennsylvania and died 17-Oct-1929.   He was the son of Philo (Philip) Shively and Martha.  Philo Shively and Martha were the subjects of the Shively blog on 8-May-2015.  George A. Shively married Annie E. Rice.

The following newspaper obituary was extracted from the Altoona Mirror, Thursday Evening,  October 17, 1929, Page 28, Column 1:

George A. Shively

Of 1007 Third street, Juanita, died at the Altoona hospital at 3:55 o'clock this morning of complication of diseases following an illness of several years' duration. He was born May 11, 1864, at Mifflin, Juanita county, a son of Philip and Martha (Allen) Shively.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie E. (Rice) Shively, a native of Lewistown; also by three children, Frank P. Shively, Martha Isabel and Dorothy R. Shively, together with four grandchildren and two brothers and a sister, William of Altoona, Lance of Mifflin and Mrs. Catherine Heller of Lewistown.  The deceased was a member of the Trinity Lutheran church in Juanita, the P.O.S. of A., the Order of Railway Conductors, Chicklacamoose tribe of Improved Order of Red Men and the Pennsy relief.  Mr. Shively was retired from the Pennsy service May 11 of this year after forty-one years of service with the company, thirty-eight of which he acted as a yard conductor.  Funeral services will be conducted at the home Friday evening at 8 o'clock, in charge of Rev. J. O. C. McCracken of the Juanita Presbyterian church and on Saturday morning the funeral cortege will leave the house at 8 o'clock for a trip overland to Lewistown, where interment will be made in the Lutheran cemetery.

Mrs. Annie Shively

Of 2806 Ivyside drive, Wehnwood, died at 12:30 o'clock yesterday noon in Mercy hospital after a lengthy illness.  She was born in Lewistown Sept. 5, 1868, a daughter of Frank and Isabel (Miller) Rice, and married George A. Shively, who preceded her in death.  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Van B. Waite, with whom she resided, and Mrs. George Templeton of Juanita; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Shively was a member of the Trinity Lutheran church and the Mizpah Bible class, Juanita.  Friends are being received at the Mac & Yates funeral home, Juanita.

Frank M. Rice, Veteran Who Saw Lee Surrender At  Appomattox, Dies

Frank M. Rice, late private in the 205th Pennsylvania volunteer infantry and who stood within earshot of the surrender at Appomattox, died at 12:30 yesterday morning in his home at 1007 Third street, Juanita, where he resided for years in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Annie Shively and her son Frank P. Shively and family.

Mr. Rice was born at Port Royal on September 25, 1847.  As a fatherless and motherless boy at the age of 15 he was indentured as a bound boy to learn the trade of body building and wheelwright for vehicles in Lewistown.  On August 2, 1864, he broke away from his indenture to enlist for military service in a company of 100 men and a drummer boy who were recruited entirely in Lewistown.  As Company F of the 205th Pennsylvania infantry it was through the hard marching and fighting in the Shenandoah Valley and in constant service in winter of skirmish and battle in front of Petersburg.

Private Rice had his haversack shot from him at Fort Damnation and his head was twice grazed by rebel bullets.  But of the 12 original members of the company who lived to return to Lewistown he was one of the six who returned without a wound. On the way south to help end the war Private Rice marched with his regiment in review before President and Mrs. Lincoln in front of the White House.

Only last summer the veteran recalled to The Tribune his actual vision and hearing of the final surrender of the rebel army at Appomattox.  He saw an officer in gray step out from the confederate line and wave a white flag. "General Robert E. Lee would like to speak to General U. S. Grant." The request was granted and General Grant rode upon the scene accompanied by his staff, facing General Lee with a similar retinue. "Upon what terms can I surrender?" was the inquiry of the southern commander.  "Unconditional surrender", was the reply of Grant.  General Lee shook his head and rode back into his line with his officers trailing after.  Firing was either about to be resumed or was for an interval resumed when the white flag again appeared and the victor and vanquished faced each other.

"Unconditional surrender", again said General Grant and in the next moment he generously declined to take the sword of the defeated foe.  The long line of confederate infantry advanced to within 10 or 12 feet of the Union soldiers who stood with fixed bayonets while the rebels threw down their arms on that great Sunday in April of 1865.

Private Rice loved to recall of the generous treatment of the southerners and of the long 300 miles march of the remnant of his regiment back to participate in the last grand review in Washington.

He returned to Lewistown to finish his trade after his honorable discharge in June, 1865, and there remained for all his active years as a builder of carriages and wagons.  The returned boy in blue led Miss Isabelle Miller to the marital altar on February 18, 1868, and their happy wedded life had continued for over 60 years at the time of her death in January of 1929.

The veteran is survived by three children:  Mrs. Annie Shively in the Juanita home; William Rice, 908 Sixteenth avenue in the city and C. M. Rice of Lewistown. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Kate Roper,, in advanced years at Coatesville.  Mr. Rice retained his faculties to marked degree up to the time of his death.  He was a great reader and an interesting conversationalist with always a keen interest in the affairs of the republic that he fought to preserve.  Since early in his life he was  devout member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Lewistown, where services will he held tomorrow afternoon.  The body of the veteran soldier was taken to Lewistown yesterday morning and it will be laid to rest beside the grave of his wife in the Lewistown Lutheran cemetery.

Israel Shively And Wife, Syntha (Cynthia) Ann Brooks, From Ashland County, Ohio To Miami County, Indiana

Israel Shively Marriage, Richland Co., OH 1841

Descendants of Israel Shively who lived in Ashland County, OH and Miami County, IN expressed interest in his lineage this past week.  Israel was the son of John Shively (1800-1873) and Margaret Risinger (Bisinger) (1802-1887).  The family is searching for a document that might prove that Israel was the son of John and Margaret.  Israel died before his father, John, died and John did not leave a will. If other Shively researchers have done work in Miami County, IN and have a deed or church record that might help establish the relationship between John and Israel Shively please add a comment to this blog.

Israel Shively was married to Syntha (Sintha, Cyntha, Cynthia) Ann Brooks in Richland County, OH on 9-Sep-1841.  Israel Shively was already married by 1850 which is the first year that all members of a household were listed.  On the 1850 Ashland County, OH census John Shiveley is listed and the next household is the family of Israel Shiveley. Shiveley was listed on the previous page as head of household and this page starts with his wife and family).  By 1860 the families have moved to Miami County, IN. On the 1860 Jefferson Township is the family of Isreal Shively age 39, wife Cynthia age 27, son Phillip age 17, son Alfred age 15, daughter Margaret age 12, son Martin age 8, daughter Mary J age 5, son Manuel age 3, son Alonzo age 8 months, Mary J Shively age 23 assisting with house work (sister to Israel), Emmaline Bemer age 18 helping with housework, and Buels Daniels age 60. Two more sons were born to Israel and Syntha.  They were William H Shively born 19-May-1862 and James Grant Shively born 1866.

From various records the following information was found regarding the family of Israel Shively.  On the web site Find A Grave a picture of the pieces of the tombstone for Syntha A Shively was shown.  She is buried in the Chittick Cemetery, Miami County, IN (born 11-Jan-1824 and died 11-May-1890).   Their eldest son, Phillip Shively (1842-1865) is also buried in the Chittick Cemetery.

Alfred Shively was born 23-Sep-1844 and died 11-May-1935, buried in Galveston Cemetery.  He was married on 31-Dec-1865 to Amanda Stickler.  Extracted from The Kokomo Tribune, (Kokomo, IN), Monday, May 13, 1935, Page 2, Column 3:

Alfred Shively Succumbs At Advanced Age: Funeral Rites Tuesday

Bunker Hill, Ind., May 12--(Tribune Special)--Alfred Shively, 90, died at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at his home in Waupecong.

He was born Sept. 23, 1844, in Ohio, being one of nine children of Israel and Cynthia Shively.  When a small boy he moved with his parents to Illinois where they lived for a short time and then moved one-half mile south of Waupecong, where the deceased spent practically his entire life.  Dec. 31, 1865, he was married to Amanda Stickler.  Eleven children were born to them, four daughters having preceded him in death.

Surviving children are: Archie Shively, 2405 North Union street, Kokomo; Jesse, South Bend; Walter and Pearl, Waupecong; Frank, R.F.D. No. 6, Peru; Lawrence, Waupecong; Mrs. Eva Oldfather, R.F.D. No. 1, Galveston.

He is survived also by one brother, William of McGrawsville, twenty-six grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Mr. Shively enlisted in the union army during the Civil war and served until the end of the war as a private.  He was in Company K, 155th Indiana Regiment infantry.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the U. B. church in Waupecong with the Rev. Thomas Shively of Nead officiating.  Burial will follow in Galveston cemetery.  The body was taken to the Wayne Ladd funeral home in Miami to be prepared for burial and was returned to the home Sunday night.

The Daughters of the Union Veterans of Peru will have charge of the services at the church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Kokomo will conduct full military funeral rites at the cemetery with a grandson, Claud Shively of Kokomo in charge.

Mr. Shively was a member of the G. A. R. post at Peru.

AMBOY (Tribune Area Special) -- William H. Shively, 93, lifelong resident of McGrawsville community, died at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday in Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.  He had been ill with heart trouble for three weeks.

Mr. Shively was born in Clay Township, Miami County, May 19, 1962, the son of Israel and Cynthia (Brooks) Shively, was was the last survivor of a family of 10 children.

He was married Sept. 4, 1892 to Alice Jenkins.  She lost her life in a train accident in 1919.

He was a carpenter throughout his active years and was a member of the McGrawsville Methodist Church.

Surviving are three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Merle Powell, Bunker Hill R. R. 1; Mrs. Grace Christner and Mrs. Dorothy Glassburn, Amboy R. R. 1; Oscar Shively, Kokomo R. R. 3 and Raymond Shively, Bunker Hill R. R. 1.  There are 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

The body is at the Laird Funeral Home, Amboy where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. CST Friday, the Rev. Jesse Byrd of the McGrawsville Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery, Amboy.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday until the hour of the service.

The holidays this year will be marked by several important nuptials.  The marriage of Miss Betty Shively and Felix Joujon-Roche will be an event of next Tuesday night at 8 o'clock at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Shively. Rev. Oswald W. Taylor will officiate.  Miss Margaret Shively will be her sister's maid of honor and a cousin, Miss Lenore Peterson, will be bridesmaid.  Jack Musgrove of San Francisco will act as best man for Mr. Joujon-Roche, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Joujon-Roche of Los Angeles.  Mr. and Mrs. Musgrove arrived yesterday from San Francisco to spend Christmas and attend the nuptial. Mr. Joujon-Roche came today to spend Christmas with his fiancee and her family.

The family of Betty Shively is listed on the 1930 Multnomah County, Oregon census.  In the household are William B. Shively age 47 who is an attorney in general practice, wife Pearl P age 43, daughter Elizabeth T age 21, daughter Margaret P age 14, mother-in-law Theresa Peterson age 67 and servant Tam Ecura age 32.  

The family of Felix Joujon-Roche is listed on the 1930 Los Angeles County, California census.  In the household are Jean B. Joujon-Roche age 55 who is a lawyer with his own practice, wife Rose C age 45 and son Felix G age 20.

A strange story has developed in the disappearance of Marion F. Shively, a foreman in the Globe Fixture Company's Factory.

On July 20 Shively married Miss Mary Conahan, of 1216 West Eighth Street, and took up rooms at 612 West Seventh Street, where he formerly roomed.  The marriage created a sensation among some people, who said that there were objections to the wedding from Wooster, O., Shively's former home.  The landlady heard of the talk and ordered Shively out.

Threats From Wooster.

Shively moved to 620 Mound Street.  While at this place, it is stated, Shively was threatened from Wooster.

Saturday night, Sept. 4, Shively drew his pay at the Globe office.  He has not returned.  The landlady stated that he had left the city with his wife.

Shively was employed  by the Globe Company for a year and a half, was a valuable mechanic and foreman and received a big salary.  His sudden disappearance, coupled with rumors, caused a surprise in the workshops.

Conahan, Shively's father-in-law, stated Saturday that Shively was continually worried by someone at Wooster.  He heard of Shively again as living at 40 North Perry Street, Cleveland, O.

Tried To Leave Cleveland.

(Post Special Service)  Cleveland, O., Nov. 20. -- Marion F. Shively, who is said to be the principal in a strange story at Cincinnati and who is living with his wife at 40 North Perry Street here in furnished rooms, attempted to leave Saturday morning, but was detained by the landlady.  Shively seemed to be excited and refused to make any statement.  The couple owed rent.  Their trunks and baggage were held.  They have not been seen since.

Francis (Frank) Marion Shively was the son of Joseph A. and Margaret Shively. He was born ca. 1861.  Joseph and Margaret were located on the 1870 and 1880 Wayne County, Ohio census records.  Children born to Joseph and Margaret include:  Joseph A. born 1858, Edward born 1860, Francis M born 1861, Allie born 1866, Louella born 1868, Lafayette born 1870, William E born 1872, Everett E born 1873, and Florence A born 1877.

The marriage of Marion F. Shively is recorded in the Hamilton County, Ohio marriage records.  Recorded is the marriage of Marion F. Shively to Margaret M. Conhan on 20-July-1897 by Roman Catholic Priest F A. Winsey.  The marriage is recorded as Marriage 836C from marriage Volume 134, Page 418.  

Part of the threats that troubled Marion F. Shively might be explained from a legal document found in the Wayne County, Ohio records.  The document concerns a matter between the guardian of Margaret Shively, who is listed as an imbecile, and her heirs.  In the document it mentions "plaintiff says that the whereabouts of said Frank M. Shively have not been known for some years.  That he left his wife and children about years ago, and it is not known whether his is alive or not.  That Emily Shively was his wife, and the following children Ella Shively who is of age, Edwin Shively, Joseph Shively and Susanne Shively minors over the age of 14 years  and Glenn Shively, Pearl Shively and Earl Shively, Eva Shively minors under the age of 12 years....


Additional information on the family of Francis and Emily Shively was located by researching Emily Shively.  She was the daughter of John Crites and can be found on the 1880 Wayne County, OH census with her father John Crites, 1900 Cuyahoga County, OH census with her children and father, 1910 Ashtabula County, OH census, and 1920 Cuyahoga County, OH census with her married daughter Pearl Maus.   Emily Crites Shively died on 7-Aug-1925 and is buried in the Lake View Cemetery, 12316 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH.


Information from the 1900 census lists the following birth dates for the children of Francis M. Shively and Emily:   Ella born July 1883, Edwin born November 1885, Joseph born December 1887, Glenn born June 1892, twins Earl and Pearl born November 1894,  and Eva born June 1896.  No information could be located on daughter, Susanne.
