Charles Morrison Shively Who Lived In Wood County And Henry County, Ohio

Charles Morrison Shively was born 18-Aug-1848 in Wood County, OH and died 2-Oct-1935 in Henry County, OH.  He was the son of Henry Ambrose Shively (1802-1886) and Margaret McCartney (1804-1879). Charles was married first to Frances Holtz, daughter of James Holtz and Mary Ann Bretz. Frances Holtz Shively was born 2-Mar-1849 and died 28-Aug-1871 in Wood County, OH as a result of childbirth. Charles Shively married second on 4-Aug-1879 in Hancock County, OH to Francis "Fanny" Celeste Lewis. C. M. Shively Dies At Age 87

Rites of Ex-Holgate Livery Man To Be Sunday; Bury At Defiance

Holgate, Oct. 3 -- Funeral services for Charles M. Shively, 87, formerly the proprietor of a livery barn here, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Joseph Smith, one and a half miles northwest of Holgate, where he died Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Rev. S. K. Strauss, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church of Holgate, will conduct the rites and burial will be made in Riverside cemetery, Defiance.

Infirmities of age caused Mr. Shively's death. He passed away while sitting in a chair. He had been able to get about the house until a short time before.

He was born in 1848 in Bowling Green. Forty-five years ago he moved into a farm southwest of here and 30 years ago began operating a livery barn in Holgate.

Since his wife passed away eight years ago, he had made his home with the daughter in whose residence he died.

Surviving are two sons, Frank of Detroit, and John of Vickery, O.; two daughters, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. George Walton, Pembino, N.D.; 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A daughter and a son preceded the father in death.

Mrs. Shivley, Holgate Will Be Buried Here

The body of Mrs. C. M. Shivley, 68, who died Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at her home in Holgate will be taken to Riverside cemetery for burial, following funeral services Friday at 2 p.m. at her late home.

Mrs. Shivley is well known here, having visited a number of times at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. C. O. Haley, 721 Thurston street.

Mrs. Charles Galimore, who lives a mile from Defiance on the Fort Wayne road is a sister, and Mrs. George Cooper of Defiance is a neice. Mrs. Maude Clady and Ralph Shivley who preceded their mother in death are interred in Riverside cemetery.

Surviving are the husband, and four children: John H. Shivley, Fostoria; Frank L. Shivley, Detroit; Mrs. Joseph Smith, Holgate; and Mrs. George R. Waldron, Draton, N.D. The latter daughter cared for her mother during her illness.

Alfred Shively Who Lived In Wood County, Ohio And Died During The Civil War In Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia

Alfred Shively was born 9-Sep-1835 Bowling Green, Wood County, OH and died 20-Sep-1863 in Chickamauga, Walker County, GA.  He was the son of Henry Ambrose Shively (born 28-May-1802 in Union County, PA and died 5-Mar-1886 Wood County, OH) and Margaret McCartney (born 10-Mar-1804 and died 5-May-1879).  Alfred Shively entered service in Macon County, IL on 11-Aug-1862 and mustered in on 13-Sep-1862 at Camp Butler, IL. He was a Private in Company F, 115th Illinois Infantry. He was listed as being 5' 9", Light hair, Gray Eyes and Dark Complexion.

In Memoriam

(A few days ago since we received a letter postmarked "Vicksburg, Miss., Nov. 10," which contained the following obituary notice of Alfred Shively -- son of Henry Shively, Esg., of Bowling Green, this county --who was killed at the battle of Chicmauga. Except the postmark, there was nothing about the letter to show from whence it came. We do not know the author's name, but believing it to be the heartfelt tribute of a solider to one of Wood County's gallant sons who fell in the service of his country, we gladly publish it. --Eds-Journal.)

OBITUARY.  Alfred Shively, who fell at the battle of Chicamauga, in Northern Georgia, was well and favorably known to many in this community. He came among us a stranger, but his honest, manly face and frank, gentlemanly bearing, soon won for him good and true friends--such only as the good and true are capable of winning. No man ever distrusted him, or had cause of distrust. The golden rule was to him the law of life, and no one could know him without feeling that the world was the better for his living in it He left his plow, and the peaceful pursuits of the farmer, for the battlefield--not, as he said, from choice, but because his country had a right to claim his services, and they should not be withheld, whatever might be the sacrifice on his part. In his last letter, written the day before the battle, he says: "do not give yourselves any unnecessary trouble in regard to me. If it be my lot to fall in battle, rest assured that I shall fall at my post of duty. I shall never disgrace my friends nor the cause I am fighting for, but will do my duty as a true patriot and lover of my country, and the glorious old flag that is now unfurled to the breeze, and under whose shadow I now write". As to how well he kept his promise, let his brave companions in arms testify. His last words were, "Come on, boys, the day is ours; the enemy is retreating"!

Beneath the far-off battle field he rests quietly and well.  He leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss, which is deeply felt. His brother he often spoke of, and seemed to have a great anxiety for his welfare. He is highly spoken of by his officers, as a true patriot and a good soldier.

In Memoriam

Among the many who laid down their lives for their country, on the bloody field of Chicamauga, was Alfred Shively, son of Henry Shively, Esq., of this place. In his death, his parents and community have sustained a severe loss. No more worthy young man ever lived. He was one who made warm friends wherever he went. At the time of his enlistment he resided in Illinois, and his employers tried to persuade them not to leave. Said he: "When I see men with families turning out to defend my country, I cannot stay behind". His memory will every be fondly cherished by all who knew him. May He who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb, sustain and comfort his aged parents to this their hour of affliction. And in view of the new call for more men to crush this infernal rebellion, may our young men remember the example set them by young Shively, and "go and do likewise".          W. R. P.

Ronald Shively In Wayne County, Michigan And Ancestors In Wood County, Ohio

A Shively descendant recently enquired about more information on the lineage of his grandfather, Ronald Shively.  Original research was done to see if additional information could be found.  

The following family is listed on the 1940 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan census: Ronald Shively age 32 born PA and an engraver in a printing shop, wife Catherine age 23 born in Canada and daughter Shirley age 2 born in Michigan.  On the 1930 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan census is Frank Shively age 48 born in OH and a tool maker at an auto factory, wife Cora age 48, born in OH and married 22 years, son Sinclair age 24 born in OH and an engraver in photo engraving, son Ronald age 22 years born in PA and an engraver in photo engraving, boarder Ruby Gates age 18 born in TN and a cigar maker in a cigar factory. The following family is located on the 1920 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan census: Frank L Shively age 37 and a tool maker for a motor car company, wife Cora age 37, son Sinclair age 14, and son Ronald age 11. On the 1910 Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan is Frank Shively age 28, wife Cora age 28, son Sinclair age 4 and son Ronald age 2.  

On the WWI registration card is Frank Louis Shively, 1220 Brush, Detroit, MI, age 37, born 31-August-1881 and working for Ford Motor Company.  His nearest relative is listed as Cora Shively,wife.  On the WWII registration card is Frank Louis Shively, 6422 Lincoln Ave, Detroit, Wayne Co, MI, age 60, born 30-Aug-1881, born near Bowling Green, OH.  He is listed as working for himself, Shively Radio and Appliances.  

Frank L Shively and Cora Bush were married in Crawford County, OH on 4-May-1904.  Frank is the son of Charley Shively and Fanny Lewis and was born in Wood County, OH.  Frank's residence is given as Toledo, OH.   Cora Bush her residence as Crestline, Crawford County, OH.  

Charles M Shively and Fanny Lewis were married on 4-August-1879 in Hancock County, OH.  Charles Morrison Shively and Francis (Fanny) Celeste Shively are buried in Riverside Cem, Defiance County, OH.  Charles Morrison Shively was born 18-Aug-1848 in Wood County, OH and died 2-Oct-1935 in Henry County, OH.   Fanny Lewis was born 18-Dec-1858 and died 9-Aug-1927 in Henry County, OH. She was the daughter of John Lewis. The Ohio death certificate for Charles M Shively lists his father as John H. Shively.  It is possible the H. stands for Henry.  

Located on the 1900 Flatrock Township, Henry County, OH census is Charles Shively age 45 born Aug 1845 married 20 years, wife Francis age 42 born Dec 1857 having born 6 children and 6 living, daughter Maud age 20 born 1880, son Henry age 17 born July 1882, daughter  age 15 born 1885, son Ralph age 10 born Aug 1889, daughter Mildret age 1 born 1899 and grand daughter Ducel age 2 born 1898.

Located on the 1880 Center Township, Wood County, OH census is Charles Shiveley age 32, wife Francis age 24, daughter Maud age 6 months, father Henry Shively age 78 and sister Minevra age 38.  

The parents of Charles Morrison Shively are found on the 1870 Center Township, Wood County, OH census:  Henry Shively age 68, wife Margaret 66, daughter Minerva age 24 and son Morton age 21.    On the 1860 Center Township, Wood County, OH census is Henry Shively age 58, wife Margaret age 56, daughter Minerva age 18, daughter Cynthia age 19, daughter Lucinda Groves age 25, son Alva age 15, son Morrison age 13 and grandson John H Groves age 3.

The lineage of this family is well documented.  Henry Shively was born 23-May-1802 in Millville, Columbia County, PA and died 5-Mar-1886 in Bowling Green, Wood County, OH. He married Margaret McCartney.

Henry Shively (1802-1886) was the son of Henry Shively (1762-1821) and Elizabeth Green (1763-1809).  

Henry Shively (1762-1821) was the son of Christian Shively born 25-Dec-1718 in Oberdorf, Basel, Switzerland died 16-Nov-1773 in York County, PA and Esther Neff.

Christian Shively (1718-1773) was the son of Christian Shively (Schaeublin) born 6-Nov-1683 in Oberdorf, Basel, Switzerland and died before 18-Apr-1752 in Lancaster County, PA.  Christian married Barbara Spittler.

Christian Schaeublin was the son of Durs Schaeublin.
