George Washington Shively was born 8-Feb-1859 in Sangamon County, Illinois.  He was the son of Stephen Shively. George was married on 9-Jan-1882 in Neosho County, Kansas to Sarah Ann Pierce.  Sarah was born on 27-Jan-1865 in Sangamon County, Illinois.  George and Sarah were the parents of four daughters:  Mayme Loretta who married Richard C. Crandon, Coressa Rose "Essie" who married Wilbur J. Cabness, Flossie Rebecca who married Charles J. Benson, and Violet Gertrude "Trudie" who married first Owen Leon Keiter and married second to Donna Earl Minton and married third to Raymond Maurice Keiter. George and Sarah can be located on the 1885 Kansas State Census in Neosho County, 1900 Neosho County, KS Mission Township census, 1910 Labette County, KS City of Parsons census, and 1920 Labette County, KS City of Parsons census.

     The following newspaper obituaries were located by Kay Shields who lives in Parsons, Kansas.  The Parsons Daily Sun, Saturday Evening, December 8, 1923:

Dies After A Long Illness

Mr. George Washington Shively, 64, died at 5:10 o’clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O. L. Keiter, 208 South Twenty-sixth, after an illness of two years.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10 o’clock Monday morning from St. Mary’s Catholic church, Thirtieth and Clark, at High mass, with the Rev. Father McCoullough officiating.  Burial will be at Calvary cemetery.

Mr. Shively was born February 8, 1859, being 64 years and 10 months old at the time of his death.  He was born in Illinois and came to Parsons 40 years ago, and for many years was a night watchman for the M-K-T railroad company.  About a year ago he moved to a farm near St. Paul for his health, returning to Parsons early last week for medical treatment.

Mrs. Shively leaves a wife, Sarah Shively, and four daughters, Mrs. R. C. Crandon, South Mound; Mrs. C. J. Benson, 610 North Seventeenth; Mrs. W. J. Cabness, 1221 Dirr;  Mrs. O. L. Keiter, 208 South Twenty-sixth.  He also leaves two brothers, Tom and Ben Shively of Elvermon, Ill.

The body will be in state at the Keiter home, 208 South Twenty-sixth stree, until the hour of the funeral.

Mrs. Shively, 79, Dies Of Illness

Mrs. Sarah Ann Shively, 79, a resident of Parsons since 1906, died this morning at the home of her daughter Mrs. C. J. Benson, 718 N. Central.  She had been ill about three weeks.  She became ill while on a visit at St. Paul.  All of her children were at her bedside.

Sarah Ann Pierce was born Jan. 27, 1865 in Sangamon county, Illinois.  She was married to George W. Shively in Osage Mission, now St. Paul, Jan. 9, 1882.  The family lived on a farm until 1906 when they moved to Parsons.  Mr. Shively who died Dec. 8, 1923 was nightwatchman at the Katy machine shop.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Benson, Mrs. W. J. Cabness, Houston, Texas, and Mrs. O. L. Keiter, Coffeyville, one sister, Mrs. Fred Feess, Parsons, and three brothers, J. R. and A. J. Pierce, St. Paul and W. R. Pierce, Hanford, Cal.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o’clock at  St. Patrick’s Catholic church, conducted by the Rev. P. J. Mangan and burial will be in the family lot in Calvary cemetery.

The Daughters of Isabella will recite the Rosary at 8 o’clock Thursday night at the Benson home where the body will lie in state.  The Carson funeral home is in charge.

Civil War Widow Pension Of Melissa Wright Shively, Wife Of John W. Shively, From Stephenson County, IL

Recently the Civil War Widow's pension file for Melissa Wright Shively, widow of John W. Shively, was added to the information on Fold-3.  This is an important find for those working on families who descend from John W. Shively and Melissa Shively because there are two different John W. Shively's who married Melissa's and have Civil War pension information.  With the new pension information the two families are easier to identify.  

This article pertains to John W. Shively who enlisted in 1861 in either Stephenson County or Jo Davis County, IL.  He was mustered into service on 20-Nov-1861 in St. Louis and served in Company I, 3 Regiment, Missouri Cavalry.  John died of typhoid fever in the Union hospital at Palmyra, MO on 4-Jan-1862.  This John W. Shively married Melissa Wright, daughter of Washington Wright and wife Jane, located on the 1850 Tioga County, PA census.

The other John W. Shively served in Company E, 155th Indiana Infantry Regiment.  This John W. Shively married first Hannah Peatt and second Melissa Strader.  John Shively died on 27-Feb-1915 in Madison County, IN.

Collecting the information regarding John W. Shively and Melissa Wright who were in Illinois was difficult because the families associated with this lineage were very mobile.  There is still a good deal of research that needs to be done on this family but the following information can be used as a guide.  

In the pension information there is one form which mentions that the age of John W. Shively at death was 23.  If he died in January of 1862 this would probably mean he was born about 1838.  John was not located on an 1850 or 1860 census.  There were three sons of Christian Shively (1751-1842) and Catherine Smith (1752-1821) who came to the Stephenson County, IL area; Samuel Shively, Christian Shively and Jacob Shively.   It may be that John W. Shively descends from one of the sons of Christian Shively and Catherine Smith but this article does not have this proof and further research is needed.       John W. Shively and Melissa Wright were married on 29-Sep-1860 in Loran, Stephenson County, IL.     One son was born to this union.  Their son, John Shively, was born 11-Oct-1861.  John W. Shively is buried in Yellow Creek Cemetery in Stephenson County, IL and his tombstone identifies Jno. Shively, Co I, 3rd MO Cavalry.

On the 24-Feb-1864, Melissa Wright Shively appeared before a clerk of the Circuit Court in Carroll County, IL to give her testament and information for the Civil War widow's pension.  

On 1-Apr-1866 Melissa Wright Shively married George Porter in Greenfield, Wabasha County, MN.   The family of George Porter was located on the 1870 Pontoosuc Township, Hancock County, IL census.  Listed in the family are George Porter age 25 a farm laborer born in Michigan, wife Melissa age 23 born in Pennsylvania, son Albert age 3 born in Minnesota,  daughter Rosella age 5 born in Minnesota, son Francis age 2 months born in March in Illinois, and stepson John Shively age 8 born in Illinois.  More research is needed to locate any of these family members in census records after 1870.

There is a Samuel Shively and wife Hettie who were located on the 1850 thru 1870 Stephenson County, IL census records.   Samuel and Hettie are buried in the Babbs Grove Cemetery in Stephenson County, IL.  The tombstone for Samuel lists date of death as 30-Apr-1877 at age 67 years, 7 months, 1 day.  The tombstone for Hettie lists date of death as 15-Mar-1900 age 86 years, 4 months, 2 days.  

Melissa Wright is found with her parents, R W Wright and Jane,  on the 1850 Tioga County, PA census.  Washington Wright and Jane Wright are on the 1860 Stephenson County, IL census.  They are located on the 1880 Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa census.    A brother to Melissa Wright, Alonzo Wright, is listed on the 1865 Minnesota census in Wabasha County.

There is a George Porter listed with parents A. Porter and wife Harriett, on the 1860 Hancock County, IL census.  This family is listed on the 1865 Minnesota census in Wabasha County.  

Earl Shively, Son Of Bennet Shively And Ida Wheeler Of Sangamon County, IL

The following newspaper articles tell of the unfortunate circumstances regarding Earl Shively, son of Bennet Shively and Ida Wheeler.  Earl was born in May 1892 and died in February 1916.

Clothing Catches Fire - Pawnee Man Burned

Earl Shively Suffers Serious Injury When Oil-Saturated Clothing Blazes.

Earl Shively, aged 23 years, was severely burned in the Peabody mine in Pawnee yesterday morning when his clothes, saturated with oil, caught fire.  He is in a serious condition.

Earl Shively, Victim Of Blast, Expires At Local Hospital

Accident Occurred Three Three Weeks Ago-Inquest Will Be Held Today And Remains Will Be Forwarded To Former Home.

Earl Shively of Pawnee expired at St. John's hospital at 9 o'clock yesterday morning from burns received in an accident in a coal mine at Pawnee three weeks ago.  Following the accident, Shively was brought to Springfield and has since been under the care of local physicians.

The decedent was a laborer in the Pawnee mine and had resided at that place for some time.  Coroner Rhodes will hold an inquest this morning.  The decedent is survived by his father, Benjamin Shively, his step-mother, Mrs. Della Shively, one sister, Miss Hazel Shively, one brother, Stanley Shively and one step-brother.

The remains were taken to the undertaking establishment of Gaa & Murray and will be forwarded at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon to Pawnee, where the funeral services will be held at a time to be announced later.

SHIVELY--Funeral services for Earl Shively, of Pawnee, who died Sunday morning from burns suffered while at work, at St. Mary's Catholic church, at Pawnee.  Rev. Father Lupton officiating.  Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at Nakomis.

Earl Shively is listed on the 1900 Noble County, Oklahoma census in the following household:  Bennet Shively born April 1863 occupation livery man, wife Ida born 1870, son Earl born May 1892,  daughter Hazel born June 1894 and son Stanley born March 1898. The family is located on the 1910 Sangamon County, Illinois census:  Bennet Shively age 47 occupation General Livery, wife Della age 27, son Earl age 17, daughter Hazel age 16 and son Stanley age 12.

Earl Shively was the son of Bennet Shively (1863-1951) and Ida Wheeler,  Bennet Shively  was the son of Stephen A. Shively (1803-1895) and Elizabeth Abell.  Stephen A. Shively was the son of Jacob Shively (1772-1851) and Sophia Davis who lived in Taylor County, Kentucky. 

John Henry Shively And Sarah Magdaline Rice, Taylor County, Kentucky To Neosho County, Kansas

John Henry Shively was born in Kentucky on 29-Nov-1823.  He was one of at least ten known children born to John B. Shively and Sarah Heaverin who lived in Taylor and Marion Counties. He was married to Sarah Magdaline Rice on 3-Jan-1858 at Holy Name Of Mary Catholic Church in Calvary, Marion County, KY.   Sarah was the daughter of John Rice and Mary Ann Newton.  Two brothers of John Henry married sisters of Sarah Magdaline.  These brothers were Robert W. Shively (1826-1903) who married Rosalie M. Rice (1834-1897) and Stephen Mitchell (1837-1917) who married Beatrice Josephine Rice (1845-1880).

Children of John and Sarah Shively included:  Mary Margaret born 26-Aug-1859 KY died 5-Aug-1931 KY married to James Richard Newton; Sarah Elizabeth born 16-May-1861 KY died 19-Jan-1923 married to Martin A. Newton; John M. Shively born 6- Nov-1963 KY died 23-Nov-1943 married to Victoria Greenwell;  Josephine Shively born 9-Mar-1866 KY died 6-Feb-1950 KS married to Bernard Ignatus Greenwell;  Susan A. Shively born 1-Jun-1868 KY died 24-Oct-1944 KS married Charles Benjamin Thomas; James Robert Shively born 20-Mar-1871 KY died 7-May-1927 KS; Julie Mae Shively born 31-Dec-1873 KY died 9-Sep-1876 KY; William David Shively born 14-May-1878 KY died 29-Dec-1954 KS married Sarah Ellen Fluber; and Henry A. Shively born 31-Jan-1882 KY died 28-Mar-1883 KS.

John and Sarah Shively are found on the 1880 Taylor County, Kentucky census record.  Sometime between 1880 and 1900 they moved to Kansas.  This family is found on the 1900 Neosho County,  Kansas census record.     Randy Dunavan compiled a list of families who were part of the migration from Maryland to Kentucky and then later to Neosho County, Kansas.  Listed on this list are the names of Daniel Shively, George Shively, James R. Shively, John Henry Shively and Sarah M. Rice, Susie A. Shively and Charles B. Thomas, and William D. Shively and Sarah E.  

John Henry Shively died on 16-May-1908 and is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Walnut, Crawford County, KS.  Sarah Magdaline Rice died on 22-Jan-1916 and is buried in St. Patrick's Cemtery.

James Henry Shively And Wife, Anna Frazier, In Clearfield County, PA

The newspapers in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania contain information regarding the family of James Henry Shively and wife, Anna Frazier.  James Henry Shively was born ca. 1855 in Huntingdon County, PA and died on 1-Oct-1925 in Clearfield County, PA.  He was the son of James C. Shively and Susannah Williamson.  

James Henry Shively and Anna Frazier were parents of at least the following children:  John William born 2-Apr-1880 died 18-May-1960; Mack William born 8-Oct-1883 died 12-Feb-1971; Mae E. born 25-Mar-1885 died 6-Jun-1974; Ada Laura Shively Peters born 21-Sep-1886 died 17-Dec-1955; Jane R. Shively Given born 5-Apr-1888 died Mar-1967; Clara Shively Wingate born 16-Sep-1889 died 13-Sep-1978; Frank Eugene born 21-Mar-1891died 16-Jul-1957; Pearl Anna Shively Bailor born 12-Sep-1892 died 18-May-1972; James R. born Nov 1894; and Glenna A. Located in The Clearfield Progress, Saturday Evening, October 3, 1925, Page 8, Column 2 was the following obituary for Henry Shively:   Henry Schively, a resident of the Naulton section, died on Thursday evening, after a short illness of pneumonia, aged about 69 years.  Deceased was born and reared at or near Shaver's creek in Huntingdon county.  He removed from that section to this neighborhood with the family a good many years ago.  Last spring he passed through a most serious illness, and was just recovering nicely when stricken last Sunday with pneumonia.  He is survived by his widow and a large family of sons and daughters.

Located in The Clearfield Progress, Friday Evening, January 8, 1937, Page 14, Columns 5-6: Mrs. J.H. (Annie) Shively died Thursday, December 31, 1936, at her home in Naulton.  Funeral services were held Saturday, January 2, 1937, Rev. Edwin H. Witman, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church officiating.  Interment was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.  A loyal and devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 26 years, her passing is mourned by a host of friends and relatives in Curwensville and vicinity.  She is survived by one sister, Mrs. D. F. Breon of Rockford, Ill.; one brother, John Frazier of Winnebago, Ill., and 10 children as follows: Miss Mae F. Shively, John Shively, Mrs. E. J. Peters, Mrs. William Bailor and Mrs. H. C. Thurstin, all of Curwensville;  W. Mack Shively of Ebensburg;  Mrs. J. R. Given of Uniontown, Pa., and James Shively of Minot, N.D.  She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

John W. Shively And Wife, Sarah Jane Griffiths, Who Lived In Venango County, Pennsylvania

John W. Shively was born on 15-Aug-1855 in Clarion County, PA and died 26-Aug-1902 in Venango County, PA.  He was married to Sarah Jane Griffiths born 1866 and died 1-Jun-1956 in Venango County, PA.  Sarah Jane married second to William H. Myers.  Children of John and Jane Shively were Bertha born 1884 who married 1st James Hannon and married 2nd Harry Stanly, Bernice born 1886 and died young 1888, Beatrice born 1888 who married R. Burce Allen, Charles born 1890, Henry born 1892, Edith born 1894 who married Milton Porter French, Mildred born 1898 who married Edward Hennessy, and George born 1902 who married Clementine Allen.  

John W. Shively was the son of Thomas M Shively (1823-1890) and Anna Eliza Showers.  Thomas Shively was the son of Christian Shively (1779-1860) and Mary Steese.  Christian Shively was the son of Christian Shively (1751-1842) and Sophia Catharine VonGroate Schmidt.  This lineage descends from the Durs Schaublin line from Switzerland.

Several newspaper obituaries were located for the family of John and Jane Shively.  The obituary for John W. Shiveley was located (but difficult to read) in the Oil City Derrick, Wednesday, August 27, 1902, Page 2, Column 5.  From the obituary it was learned that John Shively was employed as a driver for the Chris Paul furniture house.  He was survived by his wife and the following children:  Bertha, Beatrice, Charles, Henry, Edith, Mildred and George. Also surviving were two brothers, William and George Shively.

The obituary for Jane Griffiths Shively Myers was located in The Derrick, Oil City-Franklin-Clarion, PA, Monday, June 4, 1956, Page 8, Column 2:

Funeral service of Mrs. Jane Myers, who died Friday, were held at 2 p.m. yesterday in the Crawford Funeral Home with Dr. Wallace C. Calvert, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, officiating.  During the service he read "The 23rd Psalm" and "Crossing the Bar".  Interment was made in Grove Hill Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Clarence H. Huff, Harry Huff, Arthur Hewston, Howard N. Campbell, Clyde Simmons and Cald M. McNaughton.

Attending from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. George Shively and son Richard of Jamestown, N.Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen and son Bruce of Creighton; Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Huff of Conneant Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Huff and Mrs. Harry Huff of Franklin; Mrs. William Shreve of Meadville; Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Short, Mrs. William Shively and Mrs. B. Grimm of Emlenton.

Will Of Phillip Shively Who Lived In Monongalia County, West Virginia

Research continues on Phillip Shively who lived in Monongalia County, WV. Phillip Shively was a son of Michael Shively.  Other sons of Michael Shively included Christian Shively and Jacob Shively  who moved to Jefferson County, KY and Henry Shively who moved to Kentucky.  

The will of Phillip Shively is recorded in the Monongalia County, WV Will Book 1, Page 138:

In the name of God Amen, I Philip Shively of Monongalia County Virginia being weak in body but sound in mind and memory do make and constitute this my last will and testament in manner and form following – I do hereby set aside and annul all former Wills and Testaments made by me, My son John Shively I have already given his share of my property  My son Michael Shively he in his lifetime received his full share  to my son Jacob I give and bequeath the tract of Land on which he lives.  To my son Philip I bequeath the tract of Land on which I now live and in consideration of money I borrowed of him for which he holds my obligations I leave or bequeath to him all the money notes and accounts after paying my debts funeral expences the recording this my last will &c  that I leave at my death.  To my son Henry I have given him his full share, my daughter Polly I bequeath thirty dollars   My daughter Catharine I have paid her Eighty dollars which is the amount of her share,  My daughter Sarah I have paid her portion,  To my daughter Betsy I leave her fifty dollars.  My afflicted daughter Abigail I have given Damuel Basnet Notes to the amount of one hundred and fifty   dollars

Additional information on the children of Phillip Shively include the following: John Shively married Teresa Scott.  He died about 1833 in Rush County, IN.   Jacob Shively married Catherine Pickenpaugh.  He died on 4-Mar-1869 in Monongalia County, WV.  Philip Shively married Margaret Tribbit.  He died about 1872 in Henry County, IN.  Henry Shively married Matilda Pickenpaugh.  Catherine Shively married Samuel Basnet.  Sarah Shively married Benjamin Thomas.
