Shively (1845-1936) and Phrania "Franny" Foltz (1854-1931). Lewis married Mary Louisa Hoover in Kosciusko County, IN on 17-Aug-1902. Mary was born 19-Nov-1882 in Wakarusa, Elkhart County, IN and died 9-Jan-1948 in Clyde, Wayne County, NY. She was the daughter of Isaiah Hoover and Emaline Loucks.

Shively born Jan-1845 age 55 married 26 years, wife Fanny born Feb-1854 age 46 married 26 years 7 children born of whom 6 are living, son Ira C. born Apr-1877 age 23, son Lewis born May-1881 age 19, son Rufus O. born Oct 1883 age 16, son Curtis H. born Apr-1888 age 12, and daughter Clara E. born Sep-1892 age 7. Listed on the 1910 Colon Township, St. Joseph County, MI census is the household of Lewis Shively age 28 married 6 years, wife Mary age 27 married 6 years 1 child born and 1 child living, daughter Ocie age 7, and sister-in-law Martha Hoover age 18. Listed on the 1920 Constantine Township, St. Joseph County, MI census is the family of Louis Shively age 38, wife Mary age 37, daughter Ocie age 16 and hired man Luther Guthrie age 23. On the 1930 Cortland City, Cortland County, NY census is the household of Lewis Shively age 48, wife Mary age 47 and son Robert  age 7. Listed on the 1940 Clyde, Wayne County, NY census are the families of Alfred Hoy age 44, wife Ocie Fern age 37, daughter Winifred age 17, son Daniel age 15, daughter Eva age 9, father-in-law Louis Shively age 58 and mother-in-law Mary Shively age 57.

Lewis Shively

CLYDE, March 6 - Lewis Shively, 75, former resident of Clyde, died in Rochester early Tuesday (March 5, 1957) after a long illness. He was born in Bourbon, Ind., May 18, 1881, a son of John and Fanny Shively and has passed the last 15 years in this vicinity.

He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Alfrey E. Hoy of Clyde RD; two granddaughters, Mrs. Robert Barnes of Clyde RD and Miss Eva Hoy of Rochester; a grandson, Daniel Hoy of Newark; two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Kenneth E. Lundy Funeral Home at 48 Sodus St., Clyde, until tomorrow night when the body will be sent to Nappanee, Ind., where the funeral will be conducted Sunday afternoon. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery, Union Center, Ind.

John W. Shively And Wife Jane Hodge Who Lived In Trumbull County, Ohio

John W. Shively was born on 26-Nov-1832 and died 29-Nov-1907 in Trumbull County, OH. He was the son of Jacob Shively (born 15-May-1803 died 1-Jul-1879) and Elizabeth Wolfcale (died 12-Dec-1863). John W. Shively married Jane Hodge born 1-May-1841 in England and died 1-Feb-1923 in Trumbull County, OH. John and Jane Shively are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Trumbull County, OH.

John W. Shively and Jane Hodge were the parents of at least the following children: Sarah H. born 26-Sep-1857 died 25-Sep-1934, married 1st Clayton J. Fansler married 2nd J. W. Durbin; Elizabeth Ellen born 13-Sep-1860 died 10-Feb-1946, married Chester McIlree; Thomas N. born 17-Nov-1861 died 4-Jul-1938, married Alice (Allie) Mahan; William J. born 1-Jun-1864 died 12-Feb-1939, married Clara E. The librarians at Warren-Trumbull County Ohio Public Library located the following newspaper obituaries.  Located in the Warren Daily Tribune, 30-Nov-1907, Page 5, Column 1:

The death of John W. Shively, an aged and respected citizen of Champion, occurred Friday afternoon after a lingering illness wth a complication of diseases. The deceased was born at North Jackson November 26, 1832, and was in his 75th year.  He is survived by his wife, four sons and six daughters. The funeral services will be held Monday at 10 o'clock at the late home. Burial will take place at Oakwood.

Mrs. Jane Shively, widow of the late John Shively, one of the oldest and most highly regarded pioneer of Champion township, passed away at her home near Champion Thursday evening at 8:55, following an illness of one week. Mrs. Shively was overtaken by a stroke of paralysis seven days ago and failed to rally from the attack. Announcement of her death is received with deep regret by the people of her community. She was born on May 1, 1840 in Somersetshire, England and came to this country with her parents when she was four years old. The family located in Champion and she had lived on the farm where she died for the past fifty two years. She was a woman of find christian character and a life long membership of the Disciple church of Champion. She is survived by four sons, Thomas M. of Warren, William J. of Farmington; Fred J. of Uniondale, Ind.; Carl, at home, and six daughters, Mrs. Sarah H. Durbin, Uniondale, Ind.; Mrs. Ella E. McIlree, Mrs. Lucy A. Chinnock, Mrs. Cora J. Cummins, Mrs. Kitty D. Fry, Mrs. Lena M. Cummins, of Warren.

She also leaves twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at her late home in Champion, Monday at 1 o'clock, when Rev. Bright of Sharon will officiate. The body will be laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery in Warren.

Mollie Allene Shively Lewis, Daughter Of Lloyd Shively And Mattie Hubbard, From Taylor County, KY To Jefferson County, KY

John Q. Shively Death Certificate

A descendant of Mollie Allene Shively requested the help of the Shively researchers to see if additional information could be found. Mollie Allene Shively was born 1-Jan-1921 in Taylor County, KY and died 8-Dec-1977 in Jefferson County, KY. Mollie Shively was the daughter of Lloyd Shively and Mattie Hubbard. Lloyd Shively was born 16-Sep-1891 in Taylor County, KY and died 26-Dec-1930 in Taylor County, KY. He was buried in Miller Cemetery. Lloyd Shively was the son of John Q. Shively and Mollie Carlile. John Q. Shively was born ca. 1850 and died 31-Jul-1914 in Taylor County, KY. He was buried in Miller Cemetery. The death certificate for John Q. Shively lists that his parents were unknown.  This is a problem many researchers working on African American genealogies encounter. An attempt to find further information on the parents of John Q. Shively, who was most likely born in slavery, was done and the following information might be used as a guide for further research.

In the early history of Green and Taylor County, KY it is known that there were 3 Caucasian Shively males who established families in the area.  The men were Jacob Shively, John Shively and Michael Shively.  Some of the descendants of these men did own land which was worked by slaves.  Jacob Shively married Sophia Davis. They had a son, John W. Shively who was married on 24-Aug-1843 in Green County, KY to Mary Jane Roach.  Mary Jane Shively was the daughter of Price Roach.  Price Roach is listed on the 1850 District No. 2, Green County, KY slave schedule with 25 slaves. His daughter, Mary Jane Roach Shively, died ca. 1846, but she and John W. Shively did have a son born who was Price R. Shively and daughter Sally W Shively.

Barbara Wright compiled and published many of the Green County, KY records. Located in her Abstracts Of Circuit Court Cases, Volume 17 is located additional information regarding the Price and Shively history.  From Circuit Case #188, 21-Nov-1865, John W. Shively, Guardian for Price R. Shively and G. W. Buchanan vs. Petition to sell land: John W. Shively as guardian for his son, Price R. Shively an infant under 21 years and George W. Buchanan and his wife, Sally W. Buchanan (late Sally W. Shively) state that Price Roach departed this life in Green County, Kentucky leaving as his only heirs at law John J. Roach, Thomas G. Roach and the children of Mary Shively, deceased (late Mary Roach) to wit: Price R. Shively and Sally W. Shively, now Sally W. Buchanan. The case continues to describe the land owned.

From the Report of Comm 22-Nov-1865:

W. B. Carlile, F. P. Gaines and J. J. Roach, Comm appointed by the court report under oath that the following is a correct report of the real and personal estate of the infant Price R. Shively, to wit:

One slave named Rhoda valued at $25.00

One slave named Betty valued at $25.00

One slave named John valued at $25.00

One slave named Sally valued at $25.00

And one equal undivided half of 266 1/2 acres of land in Green County on Green River valued at ____ and that the yearly profits of the estate is nothing.  That the interest of the infant does require the sale of the undivided half of the tract of 266 1/2 acres of land upon the terms set out in the petition. 

Rhoda Shively is located on the 1870 Precinct No. 1 Green County, KY census. She is listed  in the household of Cezar Griffin age 55, Black.  Listed is Rhoda Shively age 50 Black, John Shively age 21 Black works on farm and Sallie age 14 Black.  John Shively is listed as age 21 which would mean he was born about 1850 which matches the information on the death certificate for John Q. Shively.  The relationship between Rhoda Shively and John Shively has not been proven and will require further research.

Newspaper obituaries for Mollie A. Shively and her husband Leevi Smith were found in the Louisville newspapers.  Extracted from The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Kentucky, Saturday, December 10, 1977, Page 5, Column 5:

Mrs. Mollie A. Smith, 56, of 4106 Vermont Ave., died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday at the Veterans Administration Hospital. She was the former Mollie Shively, a native of Campbellsville, and was a food service employee at Veterans Administration Hospital.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Carrie Woods of Indianapolis, Mrs. Rose Stafford and Mrs. Peggie Thompson; three sons, Lloyd K. Smith of Indianapolis, Norman and Donnell Flippins; 18 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Christ Temple Apostolic Church, 45th Street and Greenwood Avenue, with burial in Highland Memory Gardens.

The body will be at A. D. Porter & Sons Funeral Home, 1300 W. Chestnut St., after 6 p.m. Saturday.

Leevi Smith, 64, of 607 W. Breckinridge St., died at 7 a.m. Saturday at his home. He was a native of Campbellsville and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mollie Shively; a son, Lloyd K. Smith of Indianapolis, Ind.; two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Woods of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Rose Stafford, and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at A.D. Porter & Sons Funeral Home, 1300 W. Chestnut St., with burial in Highland Memory Garden.

Eva Florence Shively Collins, Who Lived In Harvey County, Kansas And Marion County, Indiana

Eva Florence Shively was born ca 1884 and died ca 1970.  She married William H. Collins in Allen County, Kansas in June 1909.  Eva Florence Shively was the daughter of John W. Shively born 28-June-1839 and died 27-February-1915 and Malissa.  John W. Shively served in the Civil War and enlisted as a Private on 15-March-1865 in Company E, 155th Infantry Regiment (Indiana).

Mr. and Mrs. William H. Collins left yesterday for Newton, Kas., where they will reside in the future.  Mr. Collins in a fireman on the Santa Fe railway, running out of Newton.  Mr. Collins and Miss Eva Florence Shively were married Thursday evening at the home of the uncle of the bride, F. M. Shively.  Rev. D. M. Campbell, formerly pastor of the Methodist church in this city, performed the ceremony.  The courtship of the couple was brought about in a unique manner.  Miss Shively, the bride, was employed in a lamp chimney factory in Alexandria, Ind. In packing a case of chimneys one day, Miss Shively wrote her name and address on a slip of paper and placed it in a chimney.  The chimneys were shipped to Newton, Kas., and the chimney with the girl's name and address in it finally came into the possession of William H. Collins, a Santa Fe fireman.  He wrote to Miss Shively and this began a correspondence which finally became a courtship and this culminated in the happy marriage of the young people.

(Iola Record.)    The wedding of Miss Eva Florence Shively and William H. Collins, was the culmination of a very romantic courtship.  Indeed the contracting parties had seen each other only three days before the ceremony was pronounced which made them husband and wife, although a correspondence has been carried on for some years.

The wedding occurred at Gas City last evening, at the home of the bride's uncle, F. M. Shively.  Rev. D. M. Campbell, formerly pastor of the Methodist church performing the ceremony.

Miss Shively, the bride, lived at Alexandria, Ind., the home of the great lamp chimney works.  She was employed in the factory.  One day in a spirit of fun she wrote her name on a slip of paper and wrapped it up in a lamp chimney.

In due course of time this lamp chimney with others was shipped to Newton, Kansas, and fate or good fortune caused William H. Collins, fireman to buy the identical chimney in which Miss Shively had placed her name.  He wrote to her and she answered.  This was many months ago.  Regular correspondence followed.

The friendship ripened into love and the proposal to marry was accepted.

Some time ago Miss Shively came to visit her uncle's family at Gas City.  Mr. Collins came over from Newton four days ago and the wedding occurred last evening.

The happy couple left for a trip to Indiana but will make their home in Newton where the husband is still a fireman.

Florence Eva Shively Collins and William H. Collins are listed on the 1900 Harvey County, Kansas census in the household of Dave Croker (first marriage) age 36, wife Ella age 46 (second marriage), stepson William Collins age 28 fireman, and step daughter in law Florence age 26.  By 1920 William and Florence are living in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.

Enterprise Dry Goods Company In Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan 1894

On the 1870 City of Coldwater, County of Branch Michigan is the household of John W. Shively, age 34 who is a dry goods merchant, wife Emma age 28,  and son Fred W age 7. John W. Shively was the son of John Shively and Margaret Myers. John W. Shively was born ca 1832 and died 30-Dec-1902, Emma Hadley Shively was born ca 1842 and died 22-Feb-1873, and son Fred W. Shively was born ca 1862 and died 30-Mar-1895.  Members of this family are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan.

Nothing Succeeds Like Success

Last Thursday the Enterprise Dry Goods Co., of Coldwater, opened at No. 3 East Maumee street, and since that time the store has been filled with buyers.  Mr. Fred Shively, who has charge of this store, says that business here has more than met his expectations, in fact on the opening day he was obliged to get six additional clerks to wait upon customers.  The Enterprise Dry Goods Store is all its name implies, and the public are not slow to appreciate this fact.  They did not come to Adrian to unload a lot of cheap goods, but are giving the best of everything in the dry goods line at prices never duplicated in Lenawee county before.  Follow the crowd and you will get there.

The Crowds Still Continue At Their Store To Get The Bargains Offered

The phenomenal success of the Enterprise Dry Goods Co., of Coldwater, since they came to this city three weeks ago, has been somewhat of a surprise to people not acquainted with their way of doing business.  Their store has been crowded nearly every day, and they have disposed of a large amount of goods. In the afternoon and evenings the crowds have increased into veritable jams, and the way they carried away goods would indicate that the ladies know bargains when they see them.

This store, at No. 3 East Maumee St., is none other than a branch of the well-known Shively Dry Goods Co., of Coldwater, which has been in existence in that city for the past 35 years, and has gained a reputation for strictly first-class goods at lowest prices, second to no other establishment in Southern Michigan.  Fred W. Shively, the junior member of the firm, has charge of the branch store in this city, and the large business enjoyed here would indicate that he is no novice at the business and knows how to cater to the public wants.

Dry Goods are sold at auction every afternoon at 2 o'clock, and every evening at 7 o'clock.  As their stay will terminate soon in this city, it behooves everyone looking for bargains to get in and secure some of the plums before it is everlastingly too late.

The Evening Telegram, Adrian, Michigan, Tuesday, May 22, 1894, Page 3, Column 3:

A Coldwater dispatch states that the Shively Dry Goods company has been compelled to close its doors, and L. S. Baumgartner & Co., have possession of the stock.  The liabilities are $9,000, and the assets are probably about the same. This is the firm that ran an auction dry goods store in Adrian for some time last winter, and without a doubt they were selling goods at less than cost, to raise money.

The Evening Telegram, Adrian, Michigan, Tuesday, April 2, 1895, Page 3, Column 2:

Fred Shively, a Coldwater young man well known in this city, committed suicide in Chicago last Saturday night.  He was the gentleman who conducted the Enterprise dry goods store in this city one year ago in the building now occupied by The Leader, No 3 East Maumee street.  He ran the store for his father J. W. Shively, of Coldwater and acted as auctioneer each evening.  He was a very genteel young man and made many friends while here.  Shively had gone to Chicago to have his eyes treated and was told his case was hopeless.  He was 32 years of age.

Civil War Widow Pension Of Melissa Wright Shively, Wife Of John W. Shively, From Stephenson County, IL

Recently the Civil War Widow's pension file for Melissa Wright Shively, widow of John W. Shively, was added to the information on Fold-3.  This is an important find for those working on families who descend from John W. Shively and Melissa Shively because there are two different John W. Shively's who married Melissa's and have Civil War pension information.  With the new pension information the two families are easier to identify.  

This article pertains to John W. Shively who enlisted in 1861 in either Stephenson County or Jo Davis County, IL.  He was mustered into service on 20-Nov-1861 in St. Louis and served in Company I, 3 Regiment, Missouri Cavalry.  John died of typhoid fever in the Union hospital at Palmyra, MO on 4-Jan-1862.  This John W. Shively married Melissa Wright, daughter of Washington Wright and wife Jane, located on the 1850 Tioga County, PA census.

The other John W. Shively served in Company E, 155th Indiana Infantry Regiment.  This John W. Shively married first Hannah Peatt and second Melissa Strader.  John Shively died on 27-Feb-1915 in Madison County, IN.

Collecting the information regarding John W. Shively and Melissa Wright who were in Illinois was difficult because the families associated with this lineage were very mobile.  There is still a good deal of research that needs to be done on this family but the following information can be used as a guide.  

In the pension information there is one form which mentions that the age of John W. Shively at death was 23.  If he died in January of 1862 this would probably mean he was born about 1838.  John was not located on an 1850 or 1860 census.  There were three sons of Christian Shively (1751-1842) and Catherine Smith (1752-1821) who came to the Stephenson County, IL area; Samuel Shively, Christian Shively and Jacob Shively.   It may be that John W. Shively descends from one of the sons of Christian Shively and Catherine Smith but this article does not have this proof and further research is needed.       John W. Shively and Melissa Wright were married on 29-Sep-1860 in Loran, Stephenson County, IL.     One son was born to this union.  Their son, John Shively, was born 11-Oct-1861.  John W. Shively is buried in Yellow Creek Cemetery in Stephenson County, IL and his tombstone identifies Jno. Shively, Co I, 3rd MO Cavalry.

On the 24-Feb-1864, Melissa Wright Shively appeared before a clerk of the Circuit Court in Carroll County, IL to give her testament and information for the Civil War widow's pension.  

On 1-Apr-1866 Melissa Wright Shively married George Porter in Greenfield, Wabasha County, MN.   The family of George Porter was located on the 1870 Pontoosuc Township, Hancock County, IL census.  Listed in the family are George Porter age 25 a farm laborer born in Michigan, wife Melissa age 23 born in Pennsylvania, son Albert age 3 born in Minnesota,  daughter Rosella age 5 born in Minnesota, son Francis age 2 months born in March in Illinois, and stepson John Shively age 8 born in Illinois.  More research is needed to locate any of these family members in census records after 1870.

There is a Samuel Shively and wife Hettie who were located on the 1850 thru 1870 Stephenson County, IL census records.   Samuel and Hettie are buried in the Babbs Grove Cemetery in Stephenson County, IL.  The tombstone for Samuel lists date of death as 30-Apr-1877 at age 67 years, 7 months, 1 day.  The tombstone for Hettie lists date of death as 15-Mar-1900 age 86 years, 4 months, 2 days.  

Melissa Wright is found with her parents, R W Wright and Jane,  on the 1850 Tioga County, PA census.  Washington Wright and Jane Wright are on the 1860 Stephenson County, IL census.  They are located on the 1880 Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa census.    A brother to Melissa Wright, Alonzo Wright, is listed on the 1865 Minnesota census in Wabasha County.

There is a George Porter listed with parents A. Porter and wife Harriett, on the 1860 Hancock County, IL census.  This family is listed on the 1865 Minnesota census in Wabasha County.  

John W. Shively And Wife, Sarah Jane Griffiths, Who Lived In Venango County, Pennsylvania

John W. Shively was born on 15-Aug-1855 in Clarion County, PA and died 26-Aug-1902 in Venango County, PA.  He was married to Sarah Jane Griffiths born 1866 and died 1-Jun-1956 in Venango County, PA.  Sarah Jane married second to William H. Myers.  Children of John and Jane Shively were Bertha born 1884 who married 1st James Hannon and married 2nd Harry Stanly, Bernice born 1886 and died young 1888, Beatrice born 1888 who married R. Burce Allen, Charles born 1890, Henry born 1892, Edith born 1894 who married Milton Porter French, Mildred born 1898 who married Edward Hennessy, and George born 1902 who married Clementine Allen.  

John W. Shively was the son of Thomas M Shively (1823-1890) and Anna Eliza Showers.  Thomas Shively was the son of Christian Shively (1779-1860) and Mary Steese.  Christian Shively was the son of Christian Shively (1751-1842) and Sophia Catharine VonGroate Schmidt.  This lineage descends from the Durs Schaublin line from Switzerland.

Several newspaper obituaries were located for the family of John and Jane Shively.  The obituary for John W. Shiveley was located (but difficult to read) in the Oil City Derrick, Wednesday, August 27, 1902, Page 2, Column 5.  From the obituary it was learned that John Shively was employed as a driver for the Chris Paul furniture house.  He was survived by his wife and the following children:  Bertha, Beatrice, Charles, Henry, Edith, Mildred and George. Also surviving were two brothers, William and George Shively.

The obituary for Jane Griffiths Shively Myers was located in The Derrick, Oil City-Franklin-Clarion, PA, Monday, June 4, 1956, Page 8, Column 2:

Funeral service of Mrs. Jane Myers, who died Friday, were held at 2 p.m. yesterday in the Crawford Funeral Home with Dr. Wallace C. Calvert, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, officiating.  During the service he read "The 23rd Psalm" and "Crossing the Bar".  Interment was made in Grove Hill Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Clarence H. Huff, Harry Huff, Arthur Hewston, Howard N. Campbell, Clyde Simmons and Cald M. McNaughton.

Attending from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. George Shively and son Richard of Jamestown, N.Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen and son Bruce of Creighton; Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Huff of Conneant Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Huff and Mrs. Harry Huff of Franklin; Mrs. William Shreve of Meadville; Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Short, Mrs. William Shively and Mrs. B. Grimm of Emlenton.
