John S. Shively And Wife, Leah Jane Herpst, Who Lived In Venango County, Pennsylvania

John S. Shively was born in December 1828 in Union County, PA and died on 22-April-1894 in Oil City, Venango County, PA.  He was the son of Christian Shively and Mary Steese.  John was married to Leah Jane Herpst on 1-January-1850.  She was the daughter of John Herpst and Mary Alsbaugh.  Leah Jane Herpst Shively was born on 23-January-1830 and died on 3-June-1917 in Kane, McKean County, PA.

John S. SHIVELY was born in Union county, Pa., December 25th 1828.  In 1834 his parents, Christian and Maria S., nee Steese, located in Elk township, Venango county (now a part of Clarion county) and engaged in farming.  In 1856, our subject, hitherto a farmer, engaged in the dry goods business in Lisbon, Venango county.  In 1863, he removed to Oil City, and changed his business to the hotel line. The hostelry, named the Oil City Hotel, was among the pioneer taverns of the place.  After a year's experience, he returned to merchandising and kept a grocery store about two years.  In the great fire, May 23, 1866, his entire property was destroyed, his loss (over $45,000) being the largest of all the sufferers.  In 1868, he re-entered the business world, having purchased the furniture stock of Nelson H. Brown, the pioneer furniture dealer of the city.  He was married January 1st, 1850 to Leah Jane, daughter of John and Polly Herpst.  Five children were born to them, of whom three are living.  Grandfather Christian S., died in 1832, aged a hundred and three.  His wife was born in Switzerland.  He was in Patty Watson's company in the Revolutionary army.  For some time they were in an old fort changed from a mill in Buffalo Valley, Pa.  His wife and children were hidden on the Laurel Mountains, and subsisted for four weeks on dry corn meal.  The trouble with the Indians were very serious.  Many settlers as well as Indians were killed.

Mother Of Mrs. H. J. Walter Passed Away Yesterday Afternoon 

At Home of Daughter

Mrs. Leah Jane Shiveley, widow of John Shiveley, mother of Mrs. H. J. Walter, a woman held in affectionate remembrance and the highest esteem passed away at the Walter home yesterday afternoon.

Mrs. Shiveley, who was 87 years of age last February, was born in Lewisburg, Union county, Pa., daughter of John and Mary Herpst.  The parents afterwards removed to a farm in Clarion county, Pa., near Salem, which is still known as the Herpst homestead.  It was there that she became the bride of John Shiveley.  They went to Oil City in the early 60s where for years Mr. Shiveley was the leading furniture dealer.  They were charter members of Trinity M. E. church and their home was one of the most hospitable in Oil City; the family was prominent not only in church but in society circles, as well for many years.

Mr. Shieveley died in 1898 and Mrs. Shiveley came to Kane in 1901 and had since made her home with Mrs. Walter.  Mrs. Chively is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas H. Simpson, of Pittsburg, and Mrs. Walter.  She also leaves two sisters and a brother, all residents of Oil City; Cyrus T. Herpst, Mrs. D. W. Guernsey and Mrs. D. R. Hosterman.  Mrs. Shiveley was the eldest child in a family of 12.

The funeral services will in the Walter residence at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, the Rev. John F. Black of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating.  The body will be taken to Oil City on Wednesday morning for interment in Grove Hill cemetery.

William Grant Shively And Margaret Elizabeth Dietterich Who Lived In Venango County, Pennsylvania

William Grant Shively was born in Clarion County, PA on 16-December-1864.  He was the son of Thomas Shively and Anna Showers.  He died 8-March-1944 in Venango County, PA. He was married to Margaret Elizabeth Dietterich.  She was born 17-September-1871 and died 5-April-1958.  She was the daughter of the Rev. John F. Dieterich.

Dr. William G. Shively

Dr. WIlliam Grant Shively, 79, well-known Clarion county veterinarian, died at his home in Emlenton Wednesday evening following an illness of more than four years duration.

He was born in Salem township, Clarion county, on December 16, 1864, the son of Thomas and Anna Showers Shively.  He was the grandson of Christian Shively III, pioneer settler of Clarion county who established a homestead in that county the year in which it was formed.  Dr. Shively was the last member of his family, two brothers and two sisters having preceded him in death.

Dr. Shively spent the early years of his life on a farm in Salem township, Clarion county.  He was graduated at the Ontario Veterinary college, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1909 and returned to Clarion county to practice his profession over a period of 35 years.

The family moved to Emlenton last February.

The deceased was a member of the Salem Lutheran church, the American Veterinary association, was the past master of the Richland grange and had served a term on the Salem township school board.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Dietterich Shively, and the following children, Mrs. Grace Smith of Conneaut, Ohio; Charles L. Shively of Bedford, Ohio; Walter F. Shively of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Gertrude Grimm and Mrs. Edna A. Shorts of Emlenton, and eight grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the home and the body will then be taken to the Salem Lutheran church of Lamartine where a funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Frank H. Miller, pastor, officiating.  Interment will be in the Salem cemetery.

Emlenton Woman Dies

Emlenton--Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Shively, 86, of Main Street, Emlenton, died at 5:30 a.m Saturday in the Oil City Hospital, following a three-weeks' illness.

She was married to Dr. William G. Shively, who died March 8, 1944.

Mrs. Shively was born in the Lutheran parsonage of Lamartine, Clarion County, September 17, 1871.  She was the last surviving member of a family of 10 children, born to Rev. and Mrs. John F. Dietterich, who served the Salem charge of the Lutheran Church for a number of years.

Mrs. Shively had lived her entire life in the Emlenton-Salem vicinity.  She was a life-long member of the Salem Lutheran Church, a member of the missionary society, Sunday school and Ladies' Aid.  She was a member of the Emlenton Chapter 426, O.E.S.   Mrs. Shively suffered a fractured hip six years ago.  However, this affliction did not deter her zest for a full, rich life.  Love dominated her motives in all her associations with family and friends.

Surviving are the following daughters:  Mrs. Gaylord (Grace) Smith of Conneaut, O.; Mrs. Robert (Gertrude) Grimm and Mrs. J. A. (Edna) Shorts of Emlenton, the latter with whom she made her home; the following sons, Charles L. Shively of Bedford, O.; Walter F. Shively of Pittsburgh; eight grandchildren, Mrs. Eleanor Kellogg Andrew of Dayton, O., Mrs. Anna Mae Shorts Gibbons of Pittsford, N.Y., Donald Shorts of Baltimore, Ronald Shorts of Emlenton, John G. Shively of Pittsburgh, Jean Ann Shively of Pittsburgh, John Shively, a student at Lehigh University, and Hugh Shively Grimm, a student at Hershey; seven great-grandchildren.

Removal was mad to the Rupert Funeral Home in Emlenton and returned to her residence at noon Sunday where friends are being received.  Prayer service will be held at the residence at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.  Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran church in Salem at 2 p.m. Tuesday.  Rev. Frank H. Miller will officiate assisted by Rev. Everett F. Spring.  Interment will be in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery.

John W. Shively And Wife, Sarah Jane Griffiths, Who Lived In Venango County, Pennsylvania

John W. Shively was born on 15-Aug-1855 in Clarion County, PA and died 26-Aug-1902 in Venango County, PA.  He was married to Sarah Jane Griffiths born 1866 and died 1-Jun-1956 in Venango County, PA.  Sarah Jane married second to William H. Myers.  Children of John and Jane Shively were Bertha born 1884 who married 1st James Hannon and married 2nd Harry Stanly, Bernice born 1886 and died young 1888, Beatrice born 1888 who married R. Burce Allen, Charles born 1890, Henry born 1892, Edith born 1894 who married Milton Porter French, Mildred born 1898 who married Edward Hennessy, and George born 1902 who married Clementine Allen.  

John W. Shively was the son of Thomas M Shively (1823-1890) and Anna Eliza Showers.  Thomas Shively was the son of Christian Shively (1779-1860) and Mary Steese.  Christian Shively was the son of Christian Shively (1751-1842) and Sophia Catharine VonGroate Schmidt.  This lineage descends from the Durs Schaublin line from Switzerland.

Several newspaper obituaries were located for the family of John and Jane Shively.  The obituary for John W. Shiveley was located (but difficult to read) in the Oil City Derrick, Wednesday, August 27, 1902, Page 2, Column 5.  From the obituary it was learned that John Shively was employed as a driver for the Chris Paul furniture house.  He was survived by his wife and the following children:  Bertha, Beatrice, Charles, Henry, Edith, Mildred and George. Also surviving were two brothers, William and George Shively.

The obituary for Jane Griffiths Shively Myers was located in The Derrick, Oil City-Franklin-Clarion, PA, Monday, June 4, 1956, Page 8, Column 2:

Funeral service of Mrs. Jane Myers, who died Friday, were held at 2 p.m. yesterday in the Crawford Funeral Home with Dr. Wallace C. Calvert, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, officiating.  During the service he read "The 23rd Psalm" and "Crossing the Bar".  Interment was made in Grove Hill Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Clarence H. Huff, Harry Huff, Arthur Hewston, Howard N. Campbell, Clyde Simmons and Cald M. McNaughton.

Attending from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. George Shively and son Richard of Jamestown, N.Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen and son Bruce of Creighton; Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Huff of Conneant Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Huff and Mrs. Harry Huff of Franklin; Mrs. William Shreve of Meadville; Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Short, Mrs. William Shively and Mrs. B. Grimm of Emlenton.
