George Lincoln Shively was born on 20-Nov-1860 in Alexandria, Huntingdon County, PA and died on 25-Mar-1915 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, PA.  He was married 1st to unknown wife who died on 29-Nov-1884. George married 2nd to Amanda Catherine Nail on 15-Aug-1894 in Blair County, PA.  Amanda was born on 13-Jun-1859 in Blair County, PA and died 2-Nov-1913 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, PA.

George Lincoln Shively was the son of Samuel Wilson Shively (born 1834 and died 1871 in Perry County, PA) and Elizabeth Ann "Eliza" Saylor (born 20-Oct-1838 Perry County, PA and died 20-Feb-1911 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, PA).  Amanda Catherine Nail was the daughter of Daniel Nail (1817-1895) and Mary Ann Hollen (1833-1920).

Listed on the 1870 Tyrone Township, Blair County, PA census is the family of S W Shively age 35, wife L A  age 32, son M C age 11, son G L age 9, son W C age 6, daughter G M age 4, daughter E  M age 3, son O P age 1, Daniel Shively age 72 and Elizabeth Saylor age 72. On the 1880 Newport Borough, Blair County, PA are Sarah Shively age 42, son Charles age 21, son George age 19, son WIlliam age 16, daughter Charlotte age 12, son Perry age 10, daughter Katie age 9 and mother Elizabeth Saylor age 83.  Listed on the Wilkes-Barre City, Luzerne County, PA census is the household of George L Shively born Aug-1860 age 39 married 6 years, wife Amanda M born 1860 age 40, daughter Mary M born 1895 aget 5 and daughter Ethel M born May-1897 age 3. On the 1910 Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, PA census  are George L Shively age 52, wife Amanda age 51, daughter Mary age 15, daughter Ethel age 12, boarder John Trager age 18 and roomer Anthony Mott age 27.

George L. Shively

Formerly of this city, died at noon yesterday, at his home in Wilkes Barre, of a complication of diseases.  He was born in Alexandria, Huntingdon county, in 1860, and for many years resided in this city.  About twenty years ago he moved to Wilkes Barre, where he has since resided. Deceased was a consistent member of the Evangelical church. In 1894, he was married to Miss Amanda Catharine Nail of Antis township, who died one year ago. Two daughters, Mary and Ethel, both at home, survive. Two brothers and one sister, Perry of Johnstown, William of Wilkes-Barre, and Mrs. Fisher of Newport, also survive. The body will be taken to Bellwood, to the home of Franklin P. Nail. Funeral services will be held in Asbury Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Asbury church cemetery.

The Death Record

SHIVELY - Mrs. Amanda Catherine Shively, wife of George L. Shively, died yesterday morning, of cancer, at her home in Wilkes-Barre. She was a daughter of Daniel (deceased) and Mary Nail, of Antis township, was born in that township June 13, 1858, and was raised there, having lived in Wilkes-Barre for nineteen years. She is survived by her mother, her husband and two daughters, Mary and Ethel; also by Mrs. J. H. Landis, whom she raised. She is also survived by ten brothers and sisters; Franklin P., of Antis township; Mrs. G. A. Glunt, of Altoona; Mrs. D. W. Nelson, of Williamsburg; William N. Nail, of Verona; Edith, at home; Mrs. Collins M. Guthrie, of Tampa, Fla.; Mrs. Thomas Krisher, of Pinellas Park, Fla.; D. B., of Juniata; Grant, at home and David, of Antis township. She was a member of the Evangelical church. The body will be brought this afternoon to the home of her sister, Mrs. Glunt, 1311 Ninth street, from where the funeral cortege will leave tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services in Asbury church and interment in Asbury cemetery.

Maurice Charles Shively And Wife Florence Jane Landy Who Lived In Luzerne County, Pennsylvania

On Thursday, December 31, 2015 three e-mails and one phone call were received asking if living members of Maurice Charles Shively could be found.  From information received an individual had found articles which belonged to the family of Maurice Charles Shively at a Goodwill store.  The individual secured the items and saw that they were placed in the possession of the American Legion Post 177 in Newport, Perry County, PA.  An army veteran who knew of this story wrote one of the e-mails asking if living relatives of Mr. Shively could be found.  A search was made and three grandsons of Maurice Charles Shively were located in Luzerne County, PA.  A phone call was made to one of the grandsons and the information passed to him.  It is hoped the articles will make their way "home" to the direct family members.  This is one example of the many acts of kindness found in the hobby of genealogy. It displays the fact that we do have many people working together unselfishly to secure and protect our family histories.

Research done to find the living descendants of Maurice Charles Shively is the subject of this weeks blog.  Maurice Charles Shively, father of Maurice Charles Shively, was the subject of the Shively blog on March 29, 2014.  The son, Maurice Charles Shively was born 22-Oct-1882 in Newport, Perry County, PA.  He died 13-May-1939 in the VA Hospital in Coatesville, Chester County, PA.  On the PA death certificate his parents are listed as Maurice Shively and Catherine Longacre. Maurice C. Shively was married to Florence Jane Landy. Children of Maurice Charles Shively and Florence Jane Landy included at least: Maurice H. Shively, Ellen R. Shively, Marion E. Shively and Marcella E. Shively.

From sources found on the Internet Maurice Charles Shively was enlisted at Fort Sill, Oklahoma on 30-Aug-1917 and honorably discharged on 28-Jan-1919.  He was a MSE (Master Signal Electrician) and saw service in the 615th Aero Squadron and 117th Aero Squadron at Kelly Field, TX and Americus, GA.

Maurice C. Shively

Maurice C. Shively, 63, formerly of Dallas, died Friday night at Coatesville Veterans Hospital, where he had been a patient 11 years.  He was a veteran of World War I.

Surviving are his widow, the former Florence Landy of Wilkes-Barre; children, Maurice, Jr., Dallas; Ellen Ruth, Marion and Marcella, the latter two twins, all of Dallas; a sister, Mrs. Leo Manasek, Miami; brother, Bernard Shively, Billings, Mont.

Funeral will be held from Luther M. Kniffen Funeral Home, 465 South Main Street, Tuesday at 1 with burial in Memorial Shrine Cemetery.  Friends may call tonight from 7 to 10.

Maurice C. Shively

Maurice C. Shively, World War I veteran and former resident of Dallas, was buried yesterday afternoon following services conducted at the Luther M. Kniffen Funeral Home, 465 South Main Street.  Rev. Robert Wood of Caverton Methodist Church officiated.

Interment was in Memorial Shrine Cemetery where military services were conducted by Battery B, 109th Field Artillery Battalion.  In the detail were First Sgt. William Wellington, commander; Sgt. Lynford Lloyd, Corp. Burton Daubert, Corp. William Edwards, Corp. David Thomas, PFC James Stevens and Recruits Edward Brojowski, Robert Hughes and Gerald Walsh.

George Schaible (Shively) And Wife, Katherine Helfra Beidleman (Biddleman), In Luzerne County, PA

The subjects of this weeks Shively blog are a work in progress. Any additional information that can be added to this family will be welcomed as records found were limited. 

George Schaible (Shively) was born ca 1825 in Germany.  He was married 6-January-1868 in Wilkes Barre, PA to Katherine Helfa Beidleman (Biddleman). She was married first to Jacob Beidleman.  Jacob Beidleman and Katherine had two sons, Joseph Henry Beidleman born 30-Aug-1855 and Martin William Beidleman born 11-Mar-1856.  A Civil War Pension for the children of the veteran, Jacob Beidleman, was submitted by the widow and her second husband George Schaible (Shively). 

At the left is a document from the Civil War pension papers.  This document supports the relationship between the surname Schaible and Shively:

County of Lucerne           Personally appeared before one Prothonotary for said County George Schaible to me known to be entitled to credit and on oath declared he is the identical Person named as Guardian of minor children of Jacob Beidleman late of Co. G 47th Reg Pa Vols and named in Pension Claim No 162.806.   That no widows claim has ever been made in this case previous to this one.  That his Attorney made a mistake in spelling claimants name in the original Papers.  He spelled it George Shively. It should have been spelled by him George Schaible. George Schaible is a German name and in English is pronounced the same as Shively.  The signatures of deponent to former Papers and to these will be found to be the same.    George Schaible

Located on the 1870 City of Scranton, Lucerne County, PA is the family of George Shivelly age 45, born in Germany, works in black smith shop; wife Catherine  age 34, born in Germany; Henry Bediman age 15, making cigars; Martin Bediman age 14, making cigars; and John Maddigor age 16, making cigars, born in Germany.    No other census information could be found for George Schaible or George Shively.

A PA death certificate for Martin William Biddleman was located.  He died in Newton Township, Lackawanna County, PA on 7-Feb-1930.  He was a widower and his wife was listed as Helen Burgon.  His parents were Jacob Biddleman and Katherine Helfra.  He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Lackawanna County.  

The following was extracted from The Scranton Republican, Scranton, PA, Wednesday, August 17, 1892, Page 5, Column 1:

George Shively died of old age at the Hillside Home at 9 o'clock yesterday morning.

It is not known if this is George Schaible (Shively).  If it is the same he would have been 67 years of age in 1892.

No additional information could be found on George Schaible (Shively), Katherine (Catherine) Helfra Beidleman, Joseph Henry Beidleman or Martin William Beidleman.

              

Maurice Charles Shively And Wife, Catherine Longacre, Who Lived In Luzerne County, Pennsylvania

The parents of Brenard Acker Shively (1881-1965) were Maurice Charles Shively and Catherine Longacre.  Maurice Charles (M. C.) Shively was born 22-November-1858 and died 31-August-1906 in Luzerne County, PA. Catherine Longacre, was born 7-April-1862 and died 12-December-1905 in Luzerne County, PA.  Both are buried in the Newport Cemetery in Perry County, PA.

M. C.  and Catherine Shively were the parents of five children:  Laura who died in 1895; Brenard Acker born 22-January-1881 died 24-September-1965 in Yelllowstone County, MT.; Maurice C. born October 1882 married 1st Maggie Thoma married 2nd Katherine J. Heksch in Marion County, IN and married 3rd Florence J. Landay; Alice born November 1888, died 1-July-1915 married to Robert Straup; and Mary born 1892.

According to the will of M. C. Shively, of Grove street, this city, which was admitted to probate on Saturday, his personal property, valued at $2,500, is to be divided among his children.  Among the personal property is the following:  A $1,000 life insurance policy in the Life Insurance Company of Binghamton, N.Y.; a $500 policy of the Knights of Maccabees of Port Huron; a $250 certificate of the national council of the Jr. O. U. A. M. and a $250 funeral benefit in the William J. Byars Council, No. 282, Jr. O. U. A. M. of this city.  The children are Rev. Brenard A. Shively, of Naponee, Neb.; Maurice Charles Shively, Jr.; Misses Alice M. and Eliza Shively, of this city.  Rev. Mr. Shively is named as executor of the estate and guardian of his two sisters, Alice and Mary.

Death Of Mrs. M. C. Shively

Mrs. Kate Shively, wife of M. C. Shively, died at her home, 105 Grove street, yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock after a long illness, her death being hastened by pneumonia, aged 43 years and 8 months.  She is survived by her husband, two sons, Rev. Bernard A., of Shelton, Neb.; Maurice, of Park avenue; Alice and Mary, at home; also by her mother and father, two brothers and three sisters.

Deceased was a faithful and consistent member of the First United Evangelical church, Dana street, being an ardent worker in the Ladies' Aid society and Keystone League of that church.

Services will be held at the home this evening at 7:30, conducted by Rev. S. H. Chubb.  The remains will be taken to Newport, Perry county, to-morrow morning on the 7:15 Pennsylvania train for interment at that place on Friday.

Farewell Gathering

A farewell gathering, a surprise to their host, assembled at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Shively, corner of Washington street and Hazle avenue, last evening. The gathering was made up mostly of the Christian Endeavor Society of the First United Evangelical church, Dana street, who met to bid a farewell and tender one of their number, Bernard A Shively, their best wishes for success in the work in which he is about to engage.  Mr. Shively goes to Nebraska this week to take up a charge and enter upon the work of the ministry.  There was a goodly number present and all spent a very pleasant time.  Refreshments were served.

Regarding the death of Laura, the daughter of M. C. and Catherine Shively the following newspaper article was extracted from The Wilkes Barre Times, Friday, February 8, 1895, Page 8, Column 1:

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shively desire to thank their kind friends and neighbors for assisting them during the affliction and death of their daughter, Laura.  Also to the Jr. O. E. Society and the teachers and pupils of the Centennial school for flowers and their kind assistance.

M. C. Shively and George L. Shively In Luzerne County, Pennsylvania

A review of the newspapers from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania produced information regarding the deaths of two brothers, M. C. Shively and George L. Shively, and their wives.  The brothers are listed on the 1870 Tyrone Township, Blair County, PA in the household of their parents, Samuel W and Elizabeth Shively.  Listed in the household also is their grandfather, Daniel Shively.

The Shively surname appears on the Blair County, PA census records beginning in 1870.  Prior to 1870 the same families can be located on the Huntingdon County, PA census records.   It appears that the patriarch of these Shively families was a Daniel Shively born ca. 1798 and his wife Mary (last name unknown) born ca. 1804.  Daniel is found on the 1830 and 1840 Huntingdon County census records.   The 1850 Huntingdon County census is the first census that lists names of the family and children listed include Samuel born ca. 1834, Mary born ca. 1837, Minerva born ca. 1838 and John W. born ca. 1844.    There is an entry in The Herald, Shirleysburg, PA, April 1858 which lists a marriage by Rev. J. B. Crist for Mr. Samuel W Shively to Miss Eliza Sailor, both of Alexandria, PA.  

In 1860 this Samuel Shively is found on the census for Alexandria and living in his household is his father, Daniel Shively (age 62) and his brother John Shively who is listed as age 18. It appears that Mary, the wife of Daniel, may have passed away between 1850 and 1860 as her name does not appear again on later records. Samuel and Eliza have one child, a son named Morris age 1, on this census record.  

 By 1870 the Samuel Shively family has moved to Blair County, PA.  Samuel Shively and family are found in Tyrone Township.  His father, Daniel Shively (age 72) is still living in his household.  John W. Shively, brother to Samuel, appears to have gotten married between 1860 and 1870 as he is listed in the borough of Birmingham (still in Huntingdon County) with wife Nancy and two children; son Henry S and daughter Maria. 

The period between 1870 and 1880 seems to have been a period of many changes for this Shively line. At the time this information is being written Samuel Shively and family could not be located on an 1880 census record.  After the 1870 census record Daniel Shively is no longer found in the census records.  (Note it may be that if Samuel Shively is located in 1880 that Daniel may still be living with him.)    John and Nancy Shively have moved to Blair County, PA, Snyder Township with children Henry, Maria, Sarah S and Robert.

M. C. (Morris) Shively and G. L. (George) Shively , sons of Samuel Shively, appear on the census records in Luzerne County, PA beginning in 1900.  From the newspaper information we learn the following:

George L. Shively, aged 54, a highly respected resident of this city died at his home, 28 parson Court, yesterday after a year's illness of complications.  He was well known throughout the city and has for years conducted a grocery business near the Armory, on South Main street.  He was always active in church and Sunday school work and was a member of the Dana street Evangelical Church and Dr. Kisler's Sunday school class.  He is survived by two daughters, Ethel and Mary.  His wife proceded in death a year ago.  Funeral services will be held at the home this evening at 7:30 by Rev. J. P. Miller of Dana street Evangelical Church. The body will be taken to Altoona, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock for interment.

The Times-Leader, Wilkes-Barre, PA, Monday Evening, November 3, 1913, Page 12, Col 2:

Mrs. Amanda C. Shively, aged 54, of 37 South Main street, died yesterday afternoon at her home.  Death was due to complications.  Surviving her besides her husband, G. L. Shively, are two daughters, Mary and Ethel, her mother, Mrs. Daniel Nall, and the following brothers and sisters:  Daniel Nall of Juaniata, William of Pittsburgh, Grant, David and Frank Nall of Bellwood, Mrs. Anna Krasher of Florida, Mrs. Mollie Gurthrie of Alabama, Mrs. G. A. Grunt of Altoona, Mrs. Webb Nelson of Williamsburg, Pa., and Miss Edith Nall of Bellwood.  Services will be conducted this evening at 7:30, the remains will be taken to Altoona tomorrow for interment.
