John Quincy Shively was born on 3-Aug-1828 in Taylor County, KY and died on 30-May-1912 in Hardin County, KY.  He was married to Louisa Jane Johnsey on 22-Dec-1853 in Hart County, KY. Louisa was born on 30-May-1837 in KY and died on 12-Feb-1927 in Stephensburg, Hardin County, KY. She was the daughter of George B. and Jane Johnsey.  

John Quincy Shively was the son of John S. Shively (born ca. 1797 in Green County, KY, died 1-Dec-1886 in Priceville, Hart County, KY, buried in Lively Cemetery, Hart County, KY, married on 11-Oct-1820 in Green County, KY) and Mary "Polly" A. Craig (born 13-Jan-1799, died 26-Mar-1866, buried in Lively Cemetery, Hart County, KY). John S. Shively was the son of Michael Shively and Nancy Payne (born ca. 1775, died in May-1850) who were married on 6-Jan-1797 in Washington County, KY and lived in Taylor County, KY.

               The Most Remarkable Couple In Hardin County — Parties And Personals

Melrose, Jan. 7th — Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. Shively celebrated their fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day a few days ago. We doubt very much if there is a couple their age in the county so hale and hearty. Mr. Shively is in his 76th year and gets about like a sixteen year old boy. He walked to White Mills and back a few mornings ago, a distance of 14 miles. He was back by noon as fresh as a school boy, thinking on account of bad weather he could walk better than ride.

Woman, Near 90, Passes At Stephensburg

Mrs. Louise Shively, about 89 years of age, died at 5 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Skees, at Stephensburg. Six months ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis but her condition only became acute last Saturday and she gradually grew weaker until the end.

Mrs. Shively was the widow of J. Q. Shively and since his death fifteen years ago she had made her home in Stephensburg. She formerly lived near Melrose. Mrs. Shively was a lifelong member of the Methodist church.

Surviving her are five daughters, Mrs. Mollie Logsdon, of Calhoun; Mrs. Mattie Payne, of Livermore; Mrs. Will Beams, of Sonora; Mrs. J. H. Payne, of Melrose, and Mrs. Skees.

Funeral services will be held at ten o’clock this morning at the Stephensburg Methodist church by Rev. E. L. Hilburn and Rev. Robert Johnson. Burial will follow in the White Mills cemetery.

Accident Results In Death

John Q. Shively Succumbs Yesterday Afternoon —Past Four Score

Yesterday shortly after noon, Mr. John Q. Shively died at his home in Stephensburg from the effects of injuries sustained by him on Monday of last week. In crossing a field with a plow on his shoulder, he stumbled over some wire fencing and fell to the ground sustaining a broken thigh. His condition remained serious until the end.

The deceased was 84 years old and spent practically all of his life in the Melrose section, where he was widely known and esteemed. He moved to Stephensburg but a few years ago to live with his daughter, Mrs. SKees. Mr. Shively was a member of the Methodist church. He leaves his wife and one son, Wesley Shively, of Arizona, and the following daughters: Mrs. Will Beams, of Melrose; Mrs. W. H Skees, of Stephensburg; Mrs. Logsdon, of Calhoun; Mrs. George Payne, of Melrose, and Mrs. Chaney, of Illinois.

The burial takes place at two o’clock this afternoon at White Mills and services will be conducted at the grave by Rev. D. F. Walton, of Cecilian.

Shively born 23-Feb-1859, died 14-Feb-1943 in Hardin County, KY, married George Andrew Payne who was born on 15-Mar-1858 and died on 23-Mar-1942  4) James Wesley Shively born ca. 1862, married on 4-Jun-1896 to Mabel E. Pfieffer in Cripple Creek, El Paso County, CO  5) George Henry Shively born 30-Apr-1864, died 3-Nov-1903 in Lincoln, Lancaster County, NE, married Frances E. Reunion Of Shively Family

Mr. J. W. Shively, of Goldfield, Nevada, and sons, Messrs. Harrison and J. Milton Shively, and daughter, Mrs. Lottie Shively Kinkade, of Winfield, Kansas, are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. Shively and his sisters, Mesdames George A. Payne and Harlie Skees, and Miss Annie Shively. Mr. Shively was born and raised in Hardin county, but for the last 20 years has resided in the west and has accumulated quite a large fortune. His friends in Kentucky as in the West are many and numbered by those who know him. And all his friends in Hardin are delighted to see him and be with him again. His daughter, Mrs. Kinkade, is quite beautiful and accomplished and during her visit here has won many friends.

Mr. and Mrs. George Cheney, of Leitchfield, Ill., arrived Wednesday and will spend several days with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. Shively and other relatives.

Mrs. Frances Shively and daughter, Miss Ruth and son, Master John Paul Shively, of Lincoln, Neb., will arrive the 15 inst and will also be guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Shively. Mrs. Francis Shively is the wife of the late George Shively of Lincoln, Neb., who was so well and favorably known here, and whose death at the place 3 years ago was deeply deplored by his many friends here.

Shively was born on 8-Feb-1869 in Hart County, KY and died on 28-Oct-1938 in Bates County, MO.  Alvin was single.  He was the son of Levi Shively (born 4-Feb-1830, died 16-Jan-1869, buried in Lively Cemetery, Hart County, KY) and Rebecca H. Stamp (born 5-Aug-1835, died 20-May-1924 in Bates County, MO, buried in Prairie Home Cemetery, Diller, Jefferson County, NE). Levi Shively was the son of John S. Shively (born ca. 1797 in Green County, KY, died 1-Dec-1886 in Priceville, Hart County, KY, buried in Lively Cemetery, Hart County, KY, married on 11-Oct-1820 in Green County, KY) and Mary "Polly" A. Craig (born 13-Jan-1799, died 26-Mar-1866, buried in Lively Cemetery, Hart County, KY). John S. Shively was the son of Michael Shively and Nancy Payne (born ca. 1775, died in May-1850) who were married on 6-Jan-1797 in Washington County, KY and lived in Taylor County, KY.

Listed on the 1850 Hart County, KY census is the family of John S. Shively age 53, wife Mary age 48, son William age 24, son John age 22, son Levi age 16, son James age 13, daughter Susan age 11 and daughter Nancy age 7.  On the 1860 District 2, Hart County, KY census are John S. Shively age 62, wife Mary age 58 and son Levi age 29.  On the 1870 District No. 6, Hart County, KY census is the household of Rebecca Shively age 37, son Emory L. age 4, daughter Sylestral age 3, and son Alvin C. age 1.  Located on the 1880 Priceville Precinct No. 77, Hart County, KY census is Rebecca H. Shively age 45, son Emory L. age 14, daughter Celestia age 13 and son Alvin C. age 11.  By 1900 this family has moved to Elm Township, Gage County, NE and is listed as Alvin Shively born Feb-1869 age 31, mother Rebecca born Aug-1835 age 64, widowed having borne 4 children with 2 living, and sister Celestia L. born Jul-1867 age 32. The family has again moved in 1910 and are listed on the Mount Pleasant Township, Butler City, Bates County, MO census being Alvin C. Shively age 41 and his mother Rebecca H age 79.

A. C. Shively Dead

A. C. Shively, well known farmer of just north of Butler, passed away suddenly Friday afternoon about 2:30 o'clock, his death being attributed to a heart attack.

Mr. Shively had been in his car and about two miles north of town on Highway 71, he apparently became  ill and stopped his car alongside the slab. He had lain down on the shoulder and a passing motorist stopped to investigate. Discovering him to be very ill the passing motorist hailed another car and sent to town for medical assistance. When the physician arrived he was dead. His death occurred about 2:30 o'clock.

Mr. Shively lived just north of the Ernsbarger farm just a short distance west of the highway. He had been in poor health for some time but had been in the field shucking corn Friday morning. He was a brother of Mrs. F. S. Adams, also residing north of town.

Alvin C. Shively was born in Kentucky on February 8, 1869. He was 69 years of age at the time of death.

The remains were brought to the Culver undertaking rooms and Dr. R. H. Smith of Rich Hill, county coroner, was summoned.

Services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Christian church, conducted by  Rev. Delbert Dick of Appleton City. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Rebecca Shively Dead

Mrs. Rebecca H. Shively, aged 88 years, 9 months and 15 days, passed away at the home of her son, A. C. Shively just west of town Thursday morning at five o'clock.

Mrs. Shively was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, on August 5, 1835. Surviving are two children, the son with whom she made her home and one daughter, Mrs. Celesta Adams of near this city. She also leaves two brothers, John M. and David C. Stamp both of Kentucky and four grandchildren, Miss Vera Adams of near Butler, Mrs. Edith Randall of Washington, Mrs. Zella Clark of Montana and Mrs. Mable Kite of Texas.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in this city Wednesday morning at 9:45 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Elder Harlan. The body was shipped on the noon train for Deller, Neb, where burial was made.

Michael, Jacob And John Shively, Heirs At Law Of Michael Shively Taylor County, KY And Monongalia County, WVA

On the 1791 Nelson County, Kentucky Tithable List for the William Skaggs Co. which includes areas of present Green and Taylor Counties is listed the group Richard Dean, John Shively, Michael Shively and Jacob Shively.  Several researchers are working on this entry and looking for the connection of those listed. 

From the records it is known that John Shively was married on 10-October-1794 in Washington County, KY to Susanna Hayden who was the daughter of William Hayden and Susanna Buckman. On the October 1792 Nelson County, KY tax list John Shively is listed over 21 which would mean he was born before 1771. John died sometime before 1811 when a deed located in Breckendridge County, KY Deed Book C, Page 135 records "this indenture made the seventeenth day of September one thousand eight hundred and eleven between John Shepherd & Susanna Shepherd his wife, late Susannah Shively widow and relict of John Shively deceased".  

Michael Shively was married on 6-January-1797 in Washington County, KY to Nancy Payne. On the October 1792 Nelson County, KY tax list Michael Shively is listed over 21 which would mean he was born before 1771.  Nancy Payne Shively is listed on the 1850 KY Mortality Schedule and she was born 1775 died May-1850.

Jacob Shively was married 17-September-1799 in Green County, KY to Sophia Davis.  Jacob was living in 1850 and from the census information he was born about 1772.  The October 1792 Nelson County, tax list records Jacob being between the ages of 16 and 21. The will of Jacob Shively was recorded in April 1851 in the records of Taylor County, KY.

1803 Power Of Attorney

The 1803 deed to the left was recorded in Green County, KY Deed Book 4, Page 43 which lists Michael Shively and Jacob Shively heirs of Michael Shively.  The deed follows: "Know all men by these presents that we Michael Shively and Jacob Shively heirs of Michael Shively Deceased both of Green County and state of Kentucky do make constitute and appoint William Kelso of Breckenridge County and State aforesaid our True and Lawful Attorney for us and in our name to sell assign and transfer all our right and title to a certain tract of land lying and being in Fayette County and State of Pennsylvania on the waters of Georges Creek  And to do all other lawful acts for affecting the premises aforesaid Notifying and Confirming all that our said attorney shall do therein by virtue hereof.  In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands and seals this 10th day of August 1803.           his mark  Michael Shively

On 8-July-1788 in Monongalia County, VA Land Grant Book 4, Page 3  is recorded the following:

 "To All to Whom these Presents shall Come, Greeting:  Know Ye, That by virtue and in consideration of a certificate in right of settlement given by the Commissioners for adjusting the titles to unpatented lands in the district of Monongalia, Yohogania and Ohio and in consideration.....paid byJohn Shively into the Treasury of this Commonwealth there is granted by the Commonwealth unto the said John Shively heir at law of Michael Shively deceased a certain tract or parcel of lands containing 302 acres by survey bearing date of the 17th of August 1786 lying and being in the County of Monongalia on Scot's Millrun waters adjoining lands of Abram Harding ...his settlement made in 1774 and bounded as follows.......8th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and 88 and of the Commonwealth the 13th

John Shively sold this 302 acres to Abraham Harden in 1792 as recorded in Monongalia County, WVA Deed Book 125, Page 178-180:   This indenture, made the 15th day of March in the year One thousand seven Hundred and Ninety-two between John Shively of Nelson County and State of Virginia of the one part and Abraham Harden of Monongalia County and State afsd of the other part.   Witnesseth that the said John Shively for and in consideration of the sum of two Hundred pounds Lawfull money of afsd State to the said John Shively in hand paid to the said Abraham Harden before the sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, him the said John Shively hath granted, bargained, sold......unto the said Abraham Harden and his heirs a tract tract of land lying and being in the fast County of Monongalia, Granted to the said John Shively by a deed from under the hand of the Hon. Edmund Ranolph Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia and bearing date of the Eighth day of July one thousand seven hundred and Eighty Eight, Three hundred and two acres of Land by survey bearing date the Seventeenth day of August One Thousand seven Hundred and Eighty Six and Bounded as follows.....
