Thomas Robert Shively was born on 6-Dec-1833 and died 15-Sept-1910 in Marion County, KY, buried in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery, Spurlington, Taylor County, KY.  Thomas Robert Shively was the son of Henry H. Shively and Elizabeth Heaverin. Henry H. Shively was the son of John Shively and Susannah Hayden.  Thomas Robert Shively was married to Julia Ann Jarboe (1838-1922).  The picture of St. Francis de Sales Church was taken in November 1985 and has since been torn down with the cemetery remaining.

Listed on the 1850 Meade County, KY census is the household of Elizabeth Shively age 45, son John age 26, daughter Julia age 19 and son Thomas age 17. Listed on the 1860 District No. 2, Marion County, KY census are Thomas Shively age 28 and wife Julia age 22. Found on the 1870 New Market District, Marion County, KY census is the family of T. R. Shively age 37, wife J. A. age 32, son J. F. age 7, daughter S. A. age 3 and daughter Julian age 1. On the 1880 New Market district, Marion County, KY census is the family of Thos. R. Shively age 47, wife Julia A. age 42, son Jas. F. age 17, daughter Susan A. age 13, daughter Julia age 11, son Wm. T. age 9 and son Robt. H. age 5. Listed on the 1900 South Lebanon District 74, Marion County, KY is the household of Thomas R. Shively born Jun-1833 age 66, wife Julia A. born Jun-1837 age 62, son Robert H. born Mar-1873 age 27, daughter Julina born Jun-1870 age 30, son John M. born Jun-1875 age 24 and daughter-in-law Mary C. born Sept-1878 age 21. 

Thomas Robert Shively and Julia Ann Jarboe had the following children:  1) James Floyd Shively born Nov-1862 Marion County, KY and died 3-Nov-1936, buried St. Francis de Sales Cemetery, Taylor County, KY.  He married Anna Eliza Fowler on 22-Nov-1887 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Anna was the daughter of Charles Robert Fowler (1842-1878) and Mary Elizabeth Edelen (1852-unknown).  Anna Eliza Fowler was born on 3-Feb-1872 or 1873 and died 16-Jul-1901 in Marion County, KY.   2)Susan A. Shively born ca. 1867  3) Juliana Shively born 28-Jun-1869 Marion County, KY died 3-Jul-1952 in Campbellsville, Taylor County, KY. She is buried in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery.  4) William Thomas Shively born 28-Mar-1870 and died 26-Jun-1937 in Calvary, Marion County, KY, buried St. Francis de Sales Cemetery, Taylor County, KY. He married Mary Nancy Abell who was born 15-Sep-1873 and died 11-Apr-1951.   5) Robert Henry Shively was born 1-Mar-1874 and died 23-Jan-1949 in Phillipsburg, Marion County, KY and buried in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Marion County, KY.  He was married to Hattie Belle Brown (1883-1965)  6)John Marion Shively was born 6-Jun-1875 and died 10-Nov-1926 in Marion County, KY. He was married on 11-Jun-1900 in Marion County, KY to Mary C. Fowler who was a daughter of Charles Robert Fowler and Mary Elizabeth Edelen. Mary C. Fowler was born on 27-Sep-1879 and died on 24-Jan-1941 in Marion County, KY.  Note Mary C. Fowler was a sister to Anna Eliza Fowler who married James Floyd Shively.

Michael, Jacob And John Shively, Heirs At Law Of Michael Shively Taylor County, KY And Monongalia County, WVA

On the 1791 Nelson County, Kentucky Tithable List for the William Skaggs Co. which includes areas of present Green and Taylor Counties is listed the group Richard Dean, John Shively, Michael Shively and Jacob Shively.  Several researchers are working on this entry and looking for the connection of those listed. 

From the records it is known that John Shively was married on 10-October-1794 in Washington County, KY to Susanna Hayden who was the daughter of William Hayden and Susanna Buckman. On the October 1792 Nelson County, KY tax list John Shively is listed over 21 which would mean he was born before 1771. John died sometime before 1811 when a deed located in Breckendridge County, KY Deed Book C, Page 135 records "this indenture made the seventeenth day of September one thousand eight hundred and eleven between John Shepherd & Susanna Shepherd his wife, late Susannah Shively widow and relict of John Shively deceased".  

Michael Shively was married on 6-January-1797 in Washington County, KY to Nancy Payne. On the October 1792 Nelson County, KY tax list Michael Shively is listed over 21 which would mean he was born before 1771.  Nancy Payne Shively is listed on the 1850 KY Mortality Schedule and she was born 1775 died May-1850.

Jacob Shively was married 17-September-1799 in Green County, KY to Sophia Davis.  Jacob was living in 1850 and from the census information he was born about 1772.  The October 1792 Nelson County, tax list records Jacob being between the ages of 16 and 21. The will of Jacob Shively was recorded in April 1851 in the records of Taylor County, KY.

1803 Power Of Attorney

The 1803 deed to the left was recorded in Green County, KY Deed Book 4, Page 43 which lists Michael Shively and Jacob Shively heirs of Michael Shively.  The deed follows: "Know all men by these presents that we Michael Shively and Jacob Shively heirs of Michael Shively Deceased both of Green County and state of Kentucky do make constitute and appoint William Kelso of Breckenridge County and State aforesaid our True and Lawful Attorney for us and in our name to sell assign and transfer all our right and title to a certain tract of land lying and being in Fayette County and State of Pennsylvania on the waters of Georges Creek  And to do all other lawful acts for affecting the premises aforesaid Notifying and Confirming all that our said attorney shall do therein by virtue hereof.  In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands and seals this 10th day of August 1803.           his mark  Michael Shively

On 8-July-1788 in Monongalia County, VA Land Grant Book 4, Page 3  is recorded the following:

 "To All to Whom these Presents shall Come, Greeting:  Know Ye, That by virtue and in consideration of a certificate in right of settlement given by the Commissioners for adjusting the titles to unpatented lands in the district of Monongalia, Yohogania and Ohio and in consideration.....paid byJohn Shively into the Treasury of this Commonwealth there is granted by the Commonwealth unto the said John Shively heir at law of Michael Shively deceased a certain tract or parcel of lands containing 302 acres by survey bearing date of the 17th of August 1786 lying and being in the County of Monongalia on Scot's Millrun waters adjoining lands of Abram Harding ...his settlement made in 1774 and bounded as follows.......8th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and 88 and of the Commonwealth the 13th

John Shively sold this 302 acres to Abraham Harden in 1792 as recorded in Monongalia County, WVA Deed Book 125, Page 178-180:   This indenture, made the 15th day of March in the year One thousand seven Hundred and Ninety-two between John Shively of Nelson County and State of Virginia of the one part and Abraham Harden of Monongalia County and State afsd of the other part.   Witnesseth that the said John Shively for and in consideration of the sum of two Hundred pounds Lawfull money of afsd State to the said John Shively in hand paid to the said Abraham Harden before the sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, him the said John Shively hath granted, bargained, sold......unto the said Abraham Harden and his heirs a tract tract of land lying and being in the fast County of Monongalia, Granted to the said John Shively by a deed from under the hand of the Hon. Edmund Ranolph Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia and bearing date of the Eighth day of July one thousand seven hundred and Eighty Eight, Three hundred and two acres of Land by survey bearing date the Seventeenth day of August One Thousand seven Hundred and Eighty Six and Bounded as follows.....

The first written record for the Shively families in counties southeast of Louisville is found in Nelson County.  On the 1791 Nelson County Tithables, William Skaggs Company, in the same household are the names of Richard Dean, John Shively, Michael Shively, and Jacob Shively.  John Shively was married in Washington County on 6-October-1794 to Susannah Hayden, daughter of William Hayden and Susanna Buckman (Marriage Book 1, Page 6). Michael Shively was married in Washington County on 6-January-1797 to Nancy Payne, daughter of Johnathan Payne (Marriage Book 1, Page 18). Jacob Shively (born 1772) was married in Green County on 17-September-1799 to Sophia Davis, daughter of Rezin Davis and Nancy Phillips (Volume 1A, Page 49, Marriage 208).

JOHN SHIVELY and SUSANNAH HAYDEN -  John Shively and Susannah Hayden had five known children; John Shively born 14-July-1804 and died 12-August-1864 who married Sarah Heaverin, Henry H Shively who married Elizabeth Heaverin, Sarah “Sally” Shively who married Samuel Elder, Nancy Shively, and Susanna Shively.  John, Henry H and Susanna were baptized on 6-August-1807 at Holy Name of Mary in Calvary, KY.            John Shively and Susannah Hayden purchased 250 acres in Green County on the East Fork of Pitmans Creek in 1796.  In 1803 John Shively purchased six lots in Hardinsburg in Breckenridge County.  It is known that Susannah’s sister, Sarah “Sallie” Hayden who married Arnold Elder, had moved to Breckenridge County.     From deed records in Breckenridge County dated 1811 it is known that John Shively was deceased and that Susannah had married second to John Shepherd. 

JOHN B SHIVELY and SARAH HEAVERIN - John Shively and Sarah Heaverin were married in Meade County (Marriage Book A, Page 11). John B  Shively was buried in the Old St. Francis deSales Cemetery in Taylor County.  John B Shively and Sarah Heaverin had the following children: 1) Robert W Shively born 8-Jan-1826 died 18-Aug-1903 Charleston, Mississippi County, MO.  Robert married Rosalie M Rice on 6-Feb-1848 in Green County.  Rosalie M was the daughter of John Rice and Mary Ann Newton. Rosalie was born 11-March-1834 died 18-Dec-1897.  2) William Thomas Shively born 8-Mar-1830 died 23-Dec-1922 Omaha, NE, buried St Joseph Cemetery, Council Bluffs, IA. William married Teresa Elizabeth Hayden at Holy Name of Mary, Calvary, KY on 4-Oct-1853 in Marion County. Teresa was born 11-Jun-1838 died 26-Apr-1907    3) John Henry Shively born 29-April-1832 died 16-May-1908 Walnut, Crawford County, KS, buried St Patricks Cemetery. John married Sarah Magdaline Rice at Holy Name of Mary, Calvary, KY on 3-Jan-1858 in Marion County.  Sarah was born 3-June-1839 died 22-Jan-1916     4) Elizabeth J Shively born 24-Mar-1834 died 23-Dec-1912 buried St. Francis deSales Cemetery. Elizabeth married James Wesley Spurling at Holy Name of Mary, Calvary, KY on 2-Oct-1855 in Marion County. James was born 27-Mar-1833 died 19-Sep-1902.  She married second to John Thomas Newton on 27-July-1903 in Taylor County, KY. 5) Stephen Mitchell Shively born 26-Jan-1837 died 10-Jan-1917 buried Soldiers National Cemetery, Marion County.  Stephen married Beatrice Josephine Rice  at Holy Name of Mary, Calvary, KY on 9-Aug-1859 in Marion County. Beatrice was born 29-Mar-1845 died 13-June-1880. He married second to Matilda A Wise on 5-Sep-1882  6) David Alexander Shively born 29-Dec-1838.  David married Christina Melton on 9-Dec-1862 in Marion County.  Christina was born 16-Sep-1838 died 22-Mar-1927   7) Samuel Shively born 25-Feb-1842 died 11-Mar-1862 buried Old St. Francis deSales Cemetery   8)Joseph H Shively born 17-Nov-1844 died 29-Sep-1917.  Joseph married Nancy Elizabeth Shipp on 7-Feb-1866 in Jasper County, Iowa. She died 17-Jan-1871. He married second on 2-Apr-1876 in Shelby County, Iowa to Elnora E Simpson  9) Perry Sylvester Shively baptized in 1848 died 29-Jan-1934 buried St. Francis deSales Cemetery.  Perry was married on 25-Feb-1867 to Susan M Melton.  Susan was born 18-Feb-1847 died 7-Sep-1898 buried St. Francis deSales Cemetery    10) Susan Mary Shively born 10-Sep-1850 died 18-Apr-1903 buried St. Francis deSales Cemetery.  Susan married on 25-Feb-1867 in Taylor County to Joseph Benedict Melton. Joseph was born 18-Mar-1849 died 28-Sep-1918. Joseph married second on 8-Aug-1904 to Mary E Newton. Children that may have died young include James Martin Shively born 5-Feb-1836 and Mahala Shively born 11-Feb-1841, both baptized at Holy Name of Mary, Calvary, KY

            John and Sarah had five sons that served in the Civil War in Company H, 10 KY Infantry. They were William Thomas Shively, Captain, Stephen Mitchell Shively, Sargeant, David Alexander Shively, Private, Samuel Shively, and Joseph H Shively, Sargeant.
