George W. Shively And Mary A. Mowery From Trumbull County, Ohio To Pettis County, Missouri

George W. Shively was born ca. 1836 in Trumbull County, OH and died 26-May-1889 in Pettis County, MO.  He was the son of John Peter Shively and Hannah Flick.  George was married to Mary A. Mowery in Trumbull County, OH in 1857.  Mary was born ca. 1837 and died in 1910.  Both are buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia, Pettis County, MO.

Listed on the 1850 Lordstown District No. 164, Trumbull County, OH census is the family of Peter Shively age 40, wife Hannah age 42, daughter Elizabeth age 20, daughter Mary A. age 18, son George age 17, daughter Margaret age 14, daughter Susannah age 12, son Andrew age 8, son John age 6 and daughter Nancy age 2.  Located on the 1860 Lordstown Township, Trumbull County, OH census are Geo. Shively age 26, wife Mary age 25, daughter Eta age 2 and daughter Olla age 2 months. Listed on the 1870 Heaths Creek Township, Pettis County, MO census is George Shively age 36, wife Mary age 34, daughter Etty age 12, daughter Ollie age 10, daughter Alison age 8, daughter Kitty age 6 and daughter Neely age 4. On the 1880 City of Sedalia, Pettis County, MO is the family of George W. Shively age 46, wife Mary age 44, daughter Etta age 22, daughter Olla age 20, daughter Kittie age 16 and daughter Nelley age 14.

Located in The Sedalia Weekly Bazoo, Sedalia, Missouri, Tuesday, June 4, 1889, Page 3, Column 6:

May 26, at 11 a.m. at his late residence, East Third street, George Shively, aged 54 years. The deceased was a native of Lordstown, Ohio and resided in Sedalia many years.

The funeral will take place at 2:30 o'clock p.m. Tuesday May 29, from the Ohio Street Methodist church.

George Washington Shively Marriage

George Washington Shively descends from the Peter Scheibly/Shively line (born 10-Apr-1742 in Switzerland, died 1823 in Perry County, Pennsylvania). George was born on 28-Aug-1841 in Trumbull County, OH and died 10-Mar-1928 in Trumbull County, OH.  George married Laura Jane Struble in Trumbull County, OH on the 16-Feb-1877. Laura Jane was born 27-Jul-1845 and died 11-Jan-1929 in Trumbull County, OH. George Washington Shively, Jr was the son of George Washington Shively, Sr (1798-1883) and Mary Grove Shively (1806-1859).

Located on the 1900 Lordstown Township, Trumbull County, OH census are George Shively born Aug-1841 age 58, wife Jane born Jul-1845 age 54, and son George F. born Aug-1890 age 9.  On the 1910 Lordstown Township, Trumbull County, OH census is the family of George W. Shively age 67, wife Laura J. age 64 and son Floyd G. age 19.  Listed on the 1920 Warren Township Precinct D, Trumbull County census is the household of George Shively age 79, wife Laura age 74, roomer Frank Johns age 39, wife Jennie age 36, and daughter Martha Jane age 9.

George W. Shively

A ten days illness with heart trouble and complications terminated in the death this morning at 3:00 o’clock of George Washington Shively, 86 years old, of 212 South Tod av., which occurred in St. Joseph’s RIverside hospital.

Mr. Shively was taken to the hospital February 29, when he was taken suddenly ill at his home, and he failed to rally from the attack that overtook him then. He was born August 28, 1841 in Austintown township, and he spent the greater part of his life in Austintown and Lordstown before taking up his residence in Warren fourteen years ago. He was a farmer by occupation and when he came here he retired from active work. During his active years he was widely known thruout the district as a progressive agriculturist and had many friends. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Laura J. Shively; a son, George F. Shively; two grand children of Warren, and a sister, Mrs. Caroline Phillips, Youngstown. The remains were taken to the W. J. White Funeral home and will be taken to his home, 212 South Tod Av, Sunday morning.  Funeral services will be held at the home Monday afternoon at two o’clock. The remains will be placed in a crypt in Western Reserve Mausoleum.

Funerals

Services in memory of the late George W. Shively, whose death took place Friday evening, were held Monday afternoon in his home, 212 South Tod avenue. Rev. C. M. Oliphant officiated, and he was assisted by Rev. C. B. Tupper. Beautiful floral tributes covered the casket and the pall bearers were Jesse Beil, J. H. Komray, John Bock, Joseph Wilson, Thomas Webb and William Reeker. The remains were placed in Western Reserve Mausoleum.

Mrs. Laura Jane Shively

Mrs. Laura Jane Shively, 84 died at 4:15 Friday afternoon, at the late home, 212 Tod avenue, S.W., following an illness of eight days with influenza and pneumonia. Mrs. Shively was born July 27, 1844. She had lived in Warren for the past 15 years, coming here from Lordstown.  She was the wife of the late George W. Shively, who died almost a year ago. Surviving are one son, George, Warren and two grandchildren. The body was removed to W. J. White funeral home and will be taken to the late residence Sunday, where funeral services will be held at 1 o’clock Monday afternoon. Entombment will be made in Western Reserve mausoleum.

C. M. Oliphant, officiated.  The pallbearers were Dana Struble, Glen Thompson, George Thomas, Walton Shively, George Buchwalter and Clifford Cassidy.   Entombment was made in Western Reserve mausoleum.

John W. Shively And Wife Jane Hodge Who Lived In Trumbull County, Ohio

John W. Shively was born on 26-Nov-1832 and died 29-Nov-1907 in Trumbull County, OH. He was the son of Jacob Shively (born 15-May-1803 died 1-Jul-1879) and Elizabeth Wolfcale (died 12-Dec-1863). John W. Shively married Jane Hodge born 1-May-1841 in England and died 1-Feb-1923 in Trumbull County, OH. John and Jane Shively are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Trumbull County, OH.

John W. Shively and Jane Hodge were the parents of at least the following children: Sarah H. born 26-Sep-1857 died 25-Sep-1934, married 1st Clayton J. Fansler married 2nd J. W. Durbin; Elizabeth Ellen born 13-Sep-1860 died 10-Feb-1946, married Chester McIlree; Thomas N. born 17-Nov-1861 died 4-Jul-1938, married Alice (Allie) Mahan; William J. born 1-Jun-1864 died 12-Feb-1939, married Clara E. Harklerode; Lucy A. born 6-Mar-1868 died 28-Feb-1925, married A. Chinnock; Fred J. born 2-Apr-1870 died 21-Apr-1965; Cora married Frank Cummins; Kittie D. born 1876 died 2-Jan-1960, married Thomas J. Fry; Lena born Mar-1879 died 1957, married Albert C. Cummins; Carl Wolfcale born 22-Aug-1883 died 20-Mar-1960.

The death of John W. Shively, an aged and respected citizen of Champion, occurred Friday afternoon after a lingering illness wth a complication of diseases. The deceased was born at North Jackson November 26, 1832, and was in his 75th year.  He is survived by his wife, four sons and six daughters. The funeral services will be held Monday at 10 o'clock at the late home. Burial will take place at Oakwood.

Mrs. Jane Shively

Mrs. Jane Shively, widow of the late John Shively, one of the oldest and most highly regarded pioneer of Champion township, passed away at her home near Champion Thursday evening at 8:55, following an illness of one week. Mrs. Shively was overtaken by a stroke of paralysis seven days ago and failed to rally from the attack. Announcement of her death is received with deep regret by the people of her community. She was born on May 1, 1840 in Somersetshire, England and came to this country with her parents when she was four years old. The family located in Champion and she had lived on the farm where she died for the past fifty two years. She was a woman of find christian character and a life long membership of the Disciple church of Champion. She is survived by four sons, Thomas M. of Warren, William J. of Farmington; Fred J. of Uniondale, Ind.; Carl, at home, and six daughters, Mrs. Sarah H. Durbin, Uniondale, Ind.; Mrs. Ella E. McIlree, Mrs. Lucy A. Chinnock, Mrs. Cora J. Cummins, Mrs. Kitty D. Fry, Mrs. Lena M. Cummins, of Warren.

She also leaves twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at her late home in Champion, Monday at 1 o'clock, when Rev. Bright of Sharon will officiate. The body will be laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery in Warren.

Henry Albert Shively Who Lived In Trumbull County, Ohio

The sheet music for the song Wild Roses Blossom On The Hillside  has words by O. E. Henry and melody by H. A. Shively.  The song was published by H. A. Shively in Warren, Ohio.

O. E. Henry is probably Orrin E Henry who is listed in the Trumbull County, Ohio census record as being a musician.  H. A. Shively was not as easy to locate.  From research it is believed that H. A. Shively was Henry Albert Shively, son Abraham Shively and Hannah Flick.  He is listed in 1860 and 1870 in Trumbull County, Ohio in his parents household and is listed as Henry A Shively.  In 1880 he is listed in his parents household as Albert Shively.  In 1900 he is living with his mother and is listed as Albert H.  In 1910 he is living with his brother and family and is listed as H. A. Shively.  

It is interesting that none of the census records for H. A. Shively list an occupation for him.  On the 1880 census living in the household of Abraham and Susan Shively are children Albert age 35, Louis (daughter) age 33 and son William age 26.  William (Solomon W. Shively)  is listed as a dealer in music.

Funeral services for the late H. A. Shiveley will be held at the home of his brother, W. S. Shiveley, on Cherry street, Saturday morning at 10:30.  The remains will be taken to Duck Creek fro burial.  Mr. Shiveley passed away Wednesday at the age of 73 years.  He held an extensive acquaintance in this part of the county where he had resided for many years.
      The staff at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library also found the following related item in the Warren Daily Tribune, Tuesday, January 16, 1917, Page 5, Column 4:
Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Baldwin and Mr. and Mrs. Shurrell Orr attended the funeral of Mrs. Baldwin's brother, Mr. Shively, in Warren, Saturday and on Sunday attend the funeral of a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherrad Foulk.
        The Ohio death certificate for Henry Albert Shively lists a birth date of Sept. 26, 1843 and death date of January 3, 1917.  He is listed as being retired.  His parents are listed as Abram Shively and Susan Flick.  The person giving the information for the death certificate was his brother, Solomon Shively.
