John W. Shively was born on 26-Nov-1832 and died 29-Nov-1907 in Trumbull County, OH. He was the son of Jacob Shively (born 15-May-1803 died 1-Jul-1879) and Elizabeth Wolfcale (died 12-Dec-1863). John W. Shively married Jane Hodge born 1-May-1841 in England and died 1-Feb-1923 in Trumbull County, OH. John and Jane Shively are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Trumbull County, OH.

The librarians at Warren-Trumbull County Ohio Public Library located the following newspaper obituaries.  Located in the Warren Daily Tribune, 30-Nov-1907, Page 5, Column 1:

The death of John W. Shively, an aged and respected citizen of Champion, occurred Friday afternoon after a lingering illness wth a complication of diseases. The deceased was born at North Jackson November 26, 1832, and was in his 75th year.  He is survived by his wife, four sons and six daughters. The funeral services will be held Monday at 10 o'clock at the late home. Burial will take place at Oakwood.

Mrs. Jane Shively

Mrs. Jane Shively, widow of the late John Shively, one of the oldest and most highly regarded pioneer of Champion township, passed away at her home near Champion Thursday evening at 8:55, following an illness of one week. Mrs. Shively was overtaken by a stroke of paralysis seven days ago and failed to rally from the attack. Announcement of her death is received with deep regret by the people of her community. She was born on May 1, 1840 in Somersetshire, England and came to this country with her parents when she was four years old. The family located in Champion and she had lived on the farm where she died for the past fifty two years. She was a woman of find christian character and a life long membership of the Disciple church of Champion. She is survived by four sons, Thomas M. of Warren, William J. of Farmington; Fred J. of Uniondale, Ind.; Carl, at home, and six daughters, Mrs. Sarah H. Durbin, Uniondale, Ind.; Mrs. Ella E. McIlree, Mrs. Lucy A. Chinnock, Mrs. Cora J. Cummins, Mrs. Kitty D. Fry, Mrs. Lena M. Cummins, of Warren.

She also leaves twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at her late home in Champion, Monday at 1 o'clock, when Rev. Bright of Sharon will officiate. The body will be laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery in Warren.

Thomas Shively And Wife Catherine Seigle Who Lived In Ingham County, Michigan

Thomas Shively was born ca 1822 in Ohio and died 4-Mar-1904 in Ingham County, Michigan. (When researching this lineage the surname is spelled Shively, Shiveley and Shivley in the records). He was married to Catherine Seigle (Siegel) who was the daughter of Fredrick Seigle and first name unknown Sadler.  Catherine was born 1-Sep-1824 in Germany and died 24-Apr-1899 in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.  Thomas and Catherine Shively are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.

Thomas and Catherine Shively are listed in the 1850 Union township District No. 48, Hancock County, Ohio census with sons Daniel age 5 and Levi age 1.  The family is recorded in the 1860 Meridian, Ingham County, Michigan census as Thomas Shiveley, age 38, wife Catharine age 35, son Daniel age 14, son Levi age 12, daughter Elizabeth age 9, daughter Sarah age 7, son John age 5, son George age 3 and daughter Alice age 4 months and John Wirts age 38.  The family is listed on the 1870 1st Ward of Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan census with additional children being daughter Alice age 9, son Andrew age 7 and daughter Frances age 5.  In 1880 Thomas and Catherine are still living in Lansing Ingham County, Michigan.

There is a report of a law suit recorded in the National Reporter System -State Series, The Northwestern Reporter , Volumn 136, June 7-August 12, 1912, St Paul, West Publishing Company, 1912:  "The case involved a claim presented by Joseph W. Stockwell against the estate of Mary E. Reid, deceased.  The claimant and deceased were formerly husband and wife, having been married on the 5th day of May, 1879.  The lived together until some time in the year 1900.  They were subsequently divorced on a bill of complaint filed by the wife on January 7, 1901, in the circuit court for Benzie County, in chancery.  At the time of the decree of divorce was granted, claimant had been arrested and was thereafter tried in the circuit court for the county of Genesee for the crime of conspiracy and sentenced to the state prison at Jackson on or about the 22nd day of January, 1903.  In the month of May, 1905, Mary E. Stockwell was remarried to a many by the name of Reid with whom she lived but a short time; she having been killed in the month of August of the same year leaving a last will and testament.  

The law suit involved the issue of an insurance policy from the Royal Arcanum Insurance Association.   The claimant offered testimony showing that Thomas Shivley, the father of deceased, was insured in the association above stated.  The date of the policy was September 2, 1881, and the amount was $3,000.  The original beneficiary was Catharine Shivley, the wife of the insured.  The beneficiary was changed November 28, 1886 to Andrew J. Shively, son; and again in August, 1891, to Catharine Shivley two-thirds, and Andrew Thomas Shivley, grandson, one-third.  It was changed again November 7, 1894, to Andrew T. Shivley, grandson, $1,000, Mary H. Stockwell, daughter, $2,000.  It was changed on March 27, 1895, to Mary E. Stockwell, daughter, $3,000.  That was the last change, and Mary E. Stockwell was the beneficiary at the time of the death of Thomas Shivley, which occurred March 4, 1904.     The report is full of good genealogy information.

From the Ingham County, Michigan death certificate for Catharine Seigle Shively it is listed she was the parent of 13 children, with 7 children living in 1899.  Additional information on nine of the thirteen children include:  1) Daniel born 27-Oct-1845 died 5-Apr-1874, buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.  The tombstone reads "s/o Thomas & Catherine Shiveley, loved one, "a loved one has gone from our circle, on earth we will meet him no more.  He has gone to his home in heaven, and all his afflictions are 'oer"  2)  Levi born 1848 died 1923 who married Carrie A last name unknown born 1848 died 1939 buried in Mount Hope Cemetery 3) Mary Elizabeth born 1851 died Aug-1905 married 1st Joseph W. Stockwell, 2nd Mr. Reid 4) Sarah E born ca. 1853   5) John W born 18-Mar-1855 died 10-Jul-1913 in Gilmore, Benzie County, Michigan   6) George N born 1857 died 1930  7)  Alice Martha born 23-Aug-1859, died 24-Jul-1939 in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan, married 12-Jun-1882 to John C Reichert  8) Andrew J born 1862 died 1891 and 9) Frances A born Jun-1866, died 1935, married 24-Dec-1885 to Thomas Henry Sedina. 

William Grant Shively And Margaret Elizabeth Dietterich Who Lived In Venango County, Pennsylvania

William Grant Shively was born in Clarion County, PA on 16-December-1864.  He was the son of Thomas Shively and Anna Showers.  He died 8-March-1944 in Venango County, PA. He was married to Margaret Elizabeth Dietterich.  She was born 17-September-1871 and died 5-April-1958.  She was the daughter of the Rev. John F. Dieterich.

Dr. William G. Shively

Dr. WIlliam Grant Shively, 79, well-known Clarion county veterinarian, died at his home in Emlenton Wednesday evening following an illness of more than four years duration.

He was born in Salem township, Clarion county, on December 16, 1864, the son of Thomas and Anna Showers Shively.  He was the grandson of Christian Shively III, pioneer settler of Clarion county who established a homestead in that county the year in which it was formed.  Dr. Shively was the last member of his family, two brothers and two sisters having preceded him in death.

Dr. Shively spent the early years of his life on a farm in Salem township, Clarion county.  He was graduated at the Ontario Veterinary college, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1909 and returned to Clarion county to practice his profession over a period of 35 years.

The family moved to Emlenton last February.

The deceased was a member of the Salem Lutheran church, the American Veterinary association, was the past master of the Richland grange and had served a term on the Salem township school board.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Dietterich Shively, and the following children, Mrs. Grace Smith of Conneaut, Ohio; Charles L. Shively of Bedford, Ohio; Walter F. Shively of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Gertrude Grimm and Mrs. Edna A. Shorts of Emlenton, and eight grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the home and the body will then be taken to the Salem Lutheran church of Lamartine where a funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Frank H. Miller, pastor, officiating.  Interment will be in the Salem cemetery.

Emlenton Woman Dies

Emlenton--Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Shively, 86, of Main Street, Emlenton, died at 5:30 a.m Saturday in the Oil City Hospital, following a three-weeks' illness.

She was married to Dr. William G. Shively, who died March 8, 1944.

Mrs. Shively was born in the Lutheran parsonage of Lamartine, Clarion County, September 17, 1871.  She was the last surviving member of a family of 10 children, born to Rev. and Mrs. John F. Dietterich, who served the Salem charge of the Lutheran Church for a number of years.

Mrs. Shively had lived her entire life in the Emlenton-Salem vicinity.  She was a life-long member of the Salem Lutheran Church, a member of the missionary society, Sunday school and Ladies' Aid.  She was a member of the Emlenton Chapter 426, O.E.S.   Mrs. Shively suffered a fractured hip six years ago.  However, this affliction did not deter her zest for a full, rich life.  Love dominated her motives in all her associations with family and friends.

Surviving are the following daughters:  Mrs. Gaylord (Grace) Smith of Conneaut, O.; Mrs. Robert (Gertrude) Grimm and Mrs. J. A. (Edna) Shorts of Emlenton, the latter with whom she made her home; the following sons, Charles L. Shively of Bedford, O.; Walter F. Shively of Pittsburgh; eight grandchildren, Mrs. Eleanor Kellogg Andrew of Dayton, O., Mrs. Anna Mae Shorts Gibbons of Pittsford, N.Y., Donald Shorts of Baltimore, Ronald Shorts of Emlenton, John G. Shively of Pittsburgh, Jean Ann Shively of Pittsburgh, John Shively, a student at Lehigh University, and Hugh Shively Grimm, a student at Hershey; seven great-grandchildren.

Removal was mad to the Rupert Funeral Home in Emlenton and returned to her residence at noon Sunday where friends are being received.  Prayer service will be held at the residence at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.  Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran church in Salem at 2 p.m. Tuesday.  Rev. Frank H. Miller will officiate assisted by Rev. Everett F. Spring.  Interment will be in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery.
