Mary Amanda Gladys Shively was born on 8-Feb-1908 in St. Joseph County, IN and died 28-Nov-2008 in St. Joseph County, IN.  She was the daughter of Jesse B. Shively (born 24-Apr-1876 died 10-Oct-1962) and Viola Barbara Keller (born 30-Nov-1879 died 14-Nov-1945). Jesse B. Shively was the son of Alfred Shively and Amanda Strickler. Alfred Shively was the son of Israel Shively and Syntha (Sintha, Cyntha, Cynthia) Ann Brooks. Israel Shively was the son of John Shively (1800-1873) and Margaret Risinger (Bisinger)(1802-1887). Feb. 8, 1908 - Nov. 28, 2008

SOUTH BEND - Gladys was born, went to school and worked on Colfax Avenue in South Bend, IN.

After six months she moved with her family to the Shively Brick Road Farm and lived there for over 90 years.

She worked 45 years and retired from the Indiana-Michigan Electric Company, but her true avocation was working on the farm and raising sheep. In her 90th year she moved to Michigan to be near her sister, Marian Shively.

Gladys is survived by Marian and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene, and her parents, Jessie and Viola Keller Shively.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Thursday, Dec. 4th, at Highland Cemetery on Portage Avenue.

Jesse B. Shively, 86, of 23260 Brick Road., died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in his residence after a brief illness. Born on April 24, 1876, in Miami County, Ind., he moved here 56 years ago. He was married to Viola Keller, who died in 1945. Surviving are a son, E. K. Shively, of Galien, Mich.; two daughters, Miss Gladys Shively of South Bend and Miss Marian Shively of Birmingham, Mich.; a brother, Lawrence Shively, of Hammond; and a sister, Mrs. Ray Oldfather of Galveston, Ind. Friends may call in the Orvis Funeral Home. Mr. Shively was a farmer and member of the German-Warren Twp. Farm Bureau.

Mrs. Jesse B. Shively

Mrs. Viola K. Shively, of rural route No. 4, box 813, died in St. Joseph hospital at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday after an illness of four weeks. She was born in South Bend to the late pioneer couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Keller. In South Bend, Oct. 30, 1906, she was married to Jesse B. Shively, who survives. Other survivors are two daughters, Miss Gladys Shively, of South Bend, and Miss Marian Shively, of Detroit, Mich.; also a son, Eugene K., of South Bend. Friends may call in the Orvis funeral home Friday and until noon Saturday. The body will lie in St. Paul's Memorial Methodist church from 1 p.m Saturday until funeral services there at 2 p.m.  Rev. Robert M. Selle,  D.D., pastor, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Roy Knight, pastor of the Portage Chapel Methodist church. Burial will be in Highland cemetery. Mrs. Shively was the founder of the Ladies Aid society of Portage chapel, and honorary member of the Portage Home Economics club and of the Optimist club.

Archibald Gettis Shively was born 8-Sep-1869 in Pekin, Tazewell County, IL and died 26-Jun-1954 in Kokomo, Howard County, IN. He was the son of Alfred Shively (23-Sep-1844 to 11-May-1935) and Amanda Strickler (born 12-Jul-1852). Alfred Shively was the son of Israel Shively (1820-1866) and Synthia (also Cynthia) Ann Brooks (1824-1890.  Israel Shively was the son of John Shively and Margaret. John Shively was the son of Conrad Shively and Mary Moyer.

Mary Frances Sutton Shively

Archibald (Archie) Gettis Shively was married 1st to Mary Frances Sutton on 26-Jun-1897 in Miami County, IN. She was born 27-Jan-1877 and died 16-Jan-1906. She was the daughter of Jacob Sutton (1838-1915) and Martha Long (1842-1916). In the household of Archie and Mary Shively were the children of Anna Glee, Claude, and Olive Jean. Mary F. Shively is buried in Rankin Cemetery, Bunker Hill, Miami County, IN. Following are the newspaper obituaries for Mary Sutton Shively. SHIVELY

Mrs. Mary F. Shively, wife of Archie G. Shively, of Waupecong, died at 6 o'clock Tuesday evening at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Sutton, near Loree, after a lingering illness from consumption, aged twenty-eight years.  The deceased was united in marriage with her husband, who survives, June 26, 1897. She is also survived by three small children. The funeral was held from the Brethren church at Loree at 10 o’clock Thursday morning, the pastor, Rev. Menaugh, officiating. The burial was in the Rankin cemetery.

OBITUARY

Mary Frances, daughter of Jacob and Martha Sutton, was born in Miami county, Indiana, on the 27^th day of January, 1877, and died January 16, 1906, ages twenty-eight years, eleven months and nineteen days.

The deceased was married to Archie G. Shively on June 26, 1897. She became a member of the Brethren church at Loree at the age of fourteen years.  Being full of life and of a bright and cheerful temperament, she made friends wherever she went.  She had been a patient sufferer for many months, and the last few days of her life were spent in earnest prayer for release from pain.

There are left a husband, three children, father, mother, four brothers, two sisters and a large circle of other relatives and friends to mourn their great loss.

In 1908 Archie Shively married 2^nd to Estella (Stella) M. Zody. Stella Zody was born 30-Apr-1883 in Miami County, IN and died in 1976.  Listed on the 1910 Jackson Township, Miami County, IN census is the household of Archie Shively age 40, wife Stella M. age 26, son Claud age 11, daughter O. age 6, son Carl age 6.  Listed on the 1920 Center Township, Howard County, IN is the household of Archie Shively age 50, wife Stella M. age 36, son Claude age 21, son Carl age 16, daughter Vera Mae age 5, daughter Opal age 3 and son Melvin age 1. Listed on the 1930 Center Township, Howard County, IN census is the family of Archie G. age 60, wife Estella M age 46, daughter Vera M age 15, daughter Opal C. age 13,  son Melvin L age 11, and daughter Edith A age 8.

Mrs. Estella Shively will celebrate her 88^th birthday anniversary during an open house from 3-8 p.m. Saturday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Reel, 2419 N. Union St.

Mrs. Shively was born April 30, 1883, in Miami County, and she has six children: Mrs. Reel, Mrs. Parr Morrison, Mrs. Jean Hunt and Mrs. Melvin Shively, all of Kokomo, Mrs. Jack McKinney of Rochester, and Carl Zody of Columbus, Ohio.  She has 12 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Archie Shively, 84, died at 8 p.m. Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Reel, 2419 N. Union St., after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 8, 1869, in Pekin, Ill., son of Alfred and Amanda (Strickler) Shively. He moved to Wawpecong where he spent his boyhood and adulthood before moving to Kokomo 40 years ago.

He was a contract carpenter until ill health forced his retirement several years ago.

In 1908 he was married to Estella Zody who survives. Other survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Olive Jean Hunt, Mrs. Reel and Mrs. Diane Hooker, all of Kokomo, Mrs. Jack McKinney of Tipton and Mrs. Glee Himer of Plymouth; two sons, Claude and Melvin Shively, both of Kokomo, and one stepson, Carl Zody, Columbus, O.

Surviving also are one sister, Mrs. Ray Oldfather of Galveston; four brothers, Frank Shively of Peru, Jesse of South Bend, Pearl of Wawpecong and Lawrence of Hammond; 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Ellers Chapel, with the Rev. Rolland Steever officiating. Burial will be in Albright Cemetery. Friends may call at the Ellers Chapel after 11 a.m. Monday.

Israel Shively And Wife, Syntha (Cynthia) Ann Brooks, From Ashland County, Ohio To Miami County, Indiana

Descendants of Israel Shively who lived in Ashland County, OH and Miami County, IN expressed interest in his lineage this past week.  Israel was the son of John Shively (1800-1873) and Margaret Risinger (Bisinger) (1802-1887).  The family is searching for a document that might prove that Israel was the son of John and Margaret.  Israel died before his father, John, died and John did not leave a will. If other Shively researchers have done work in Miami County, IN and have a deed or church record that might help establish the relationship between John and Israel Shively please add a comment to this blog.

Israel Shively was married to Syntha (Sintha, Cyntha, Cynthia) Ann Brooks in Richland County, OH on 9-Sep-1841.  Israel Shively was already married by 1850 which is the first year that all members of a household were listed.  On the 1850 Ashland County, OH census John Shiveley is listed and the next household is the family of Israel Shiveley. Shiveley was listed on the previous page as head of household and this page starts with his wife and family).  By 1860 the families have moved to Miami County, IN. On the 1860 Jefferson Township is the family of Isreal Shively age 39, wife Cynthia age 27, son Phillip age 17, son Alfred age 15, daughter Margaret age 12, son Martin age 8, daughter Mary J age 5, son Manuel age 3, son Alonzo age 8 months, Mary J Shively age 23 assisting with house work (sister to Israel), Emmaline Bemer age 18 helping with housework, and Buels Daniels age 60. Two more sons were born to Israel and Syntha.  They were William H Shively born 19-May-1862 and James Grant Shively born 1866.

From various records the following information was found regarding the family of Israel Shively.  On the web site Find A Grave a picture of the pieces of the tombstone for Syntha A Shively was shown.  She is buried in the Chittick Cemetery, Miami County, IN (born 11-Jan-1824 and died 11-May-1890).   Their eldest son, Phillip Shively (1842-1865) is also buried in the Chittick Cemetery.

Alfred Shively was born 23-Sep-1844 and died 11-May-1935, buried in Galveston Cemetery.  He was married on 31-Dec-1865 to Amanda Stickler.  Extracted from The Kokomo Tribune, (Kokomo, IN), Monday, May 13, 1935, Page 2, Column 3:

Alfred Shively Succumbs At Advanced Age: Funeral Rites Tuesday

Bunker Hill, Ind., May 12--(Tribune Special)--Alfred Shively, 90, died at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at his home in Waupecong.

He was born Sept. 23, 1844, in Ohio, being one of nine children of Israel and Cynthia Shively.  When a small boy he moved with his parents to Illinois where they lived for a short time and then moved one-half mile south of Waupecong, where the deceased spent practically his entire life.  Dec. 31, 1865, he was married to Amanda Stickler.  Eleven children were born to them, four daughters having preceded him in death.

Surviving children are: Archie Shively, 2405 North Union street, Kokomo; Jesse, South Bend; Walter and Pearl, Waupecong; Frank, R.F.D. No. 6, Peru; Lawrence, Waupecong; Mrs. Eva Oldfather, R.F.D. No. 1, Galveston.

He is survived also by one brother, William of McGrawsville, twenty-six grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Mr. Shively enlisted in the union army during the Civil war and served until the end of the war as a private.  He was in Company K, 155th Indiana Regiment infantry.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the U. B. church in Waupecong with the Rev. Thomas Shively of Nead officiating.  Burial will follow in Galveston cemetery.  The body was taken to the Wayne Ladd funeral home in Miami to be prepared for burial and was returned to the home Sunday night.

The Daughters of the Union Veterans of Peru will have charge of the services at the church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Kokomo will conduct full military funeral rites at the cemetery with a grandson, Claud Shively of Kokomo in charge.

Mr. Shively was a member of the G. A. R. post at Peru.

AMBOY (Tribune Area Special) -- William H. Shively, 93, lifelong resident of McGrawsville community, died at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday in Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.  He had been ill with heart trouble for three weeks.

Mr. Shively was born in Clay Township, Miami County, May 19, 1962, the son of Israel and Cynthia (Brooks) Shively, was was the last survivor of a family of 10 children.

He was married Sept. 4, 1892 to Alice Jenkins.  She lost her life in a train accident in 1919.

He was a carpenter throughout his active years and was a member of the McGrawsville Methodist Church.

Surviving are three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Merle Powell, Bunker Hill R. R. 1; Mrs. Grace Christner and Mrs. Dorothy Glassburn, Amboy R. R. 1; Oscar Shively, Kokomo R. R. 3 and Raymond Shively, Bunker Hill R. R. 1.  There are 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

The body is at the Laird Funeral Home, Amboy where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. CST Friday, the Rev. Jesse Byrd of the McGrawsville Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery, Amboy.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday until the hour of the service.

There are many records on the Shively families in Indiana in the towns of Wawpecong, Bennetts Switch, Amboy, Santa Fe, McGrawsville and Bunker Hill.  Some of these families are descendants of Israel Shively and Cynthia (Synthia) Ann Brooks.

The picture at the left shows three members of the team who were Shively's. The picture is the C. H. S. Basketball Team from 1925.  The team members were listed as Ralph Myers, Leonard Johnson, Everett Shively, Laurel Shively, Raymond Shively, Omer Conn, and Harry Wolf.  The three Shivelys are descendants of Israel and Cynthia Ann Brooks.  Everett and Laurel Shively are brothers.  Their great-grandfather was Israel Shively, grandfather Alfred Shively, and father Walter H. Shively.  Raymond Shively was the grandson of Israel Shively and his father was William Henry Shively.  William Henry Shively was born in 1862 and married at age 30 and Alfred Shively was born in 1844 and married at age 21.

William Henry Shively was born on 19-May-1862 in Miami County, IN and died 28-Dec-1955 in McGrawsville, IN.  He was married on 4-September-1892 to Alice Louisa Jenkins.  Alice L. Jenkins was born on 4-May-1874 in Miami County, IN and died 29-May-1919, buried Park Lawn Cem.  William Henry Shively and Alice L. Jenkins were the parents of the following children:  Merle Edith born 24-December-1893 and died 9-Feb-1985.  She married 23-October-1923 to Charles Alvin Powell; John W. born 1896 died 1906, buried Park Lawn Cem.; Grace Elizabeth born 22-February-1898 died 12-November-1984, buried Park Lawn Cem.  She married Harry Irvin Christner on 12-March-1917; Oscar born 31-July-1902 died 29-December-1967 in Phoenix, AZ.  He married Vera Worl on 28-November-1928; Raymond born 28-October-1906 died 1-July-1974, buried Santa Fe Cem.  He married Mildred Childers on 13-April-1928; Dorothy H born 12-March-1914 died 31-July-1976, buried Santa Fe Cem.  She married Nelson Glassburn on 30-January-1935.

Peru Woman Killed

Another Dangerously Injured When Train Struck Automobile

Peru, Ind. May 29.—Mrs. William Shively was killed and Mrs. Charles Sharp was injured dangerously this afternoon when the automobile in which they were riding was struck by a Pennsylvania railroad engine on the crossing at McGrawsville south of here.  Russel Sharp, son of Mrs. Sharp was injured slightly.  The party were returning from a cemetery where they had decorated the graves of relatives with flowers.  The automobile caught on fire and was burned following the accident.

R. Shively Dies At 67

Bunker Hill – Raymond O. Shively, 67, Rt 1, died Monday at 11:40 a.m. at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Kokomo.  He had been ill since February.

Born October 28, 1906, in Miami county, he was the son of William Henry and Alice Jenkins Shively.  He was married April 13, 1928, to Mildred Childers, who survives.

Shively was a retired carpenter who was a member of the McGrawsville United Methodist Church, Crescent Lodge No. 280 in Miami and the York Rite in Peru.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, William A., Rt. 1, Bunker Hill, Robert E., Marion, Larry A., Bunker Hill, and James E. of Rt. 5, Perup three sisters Merle Powell, Rt. 1, Amboy, Grace Christner, North Grove, and Dorothy Glassburn, Rt. 1, Amboy; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  One son and two brothers preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Allen Funeral Home with burial in the Santa Fe Cemetery, the Rev. Robert L. Melling officiating.  Masonic services will be tonight at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
