Jacob Shively was born 29-Sep-1853 in Wurttemberg Germany and died 18-Dec-1898 in Northumberland Co., PA.  He was married to Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp). She was born 29-Dec-1858 in Lykens, Dauphin Co., PA and died 2-Apr-1953 in Lewisburg, Union Co., PA. Sarah was the daughter of George Chubb (Tschopp) and Magdalena Schoffstall.  

Jacob Shively and Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp) were the parents of at least the following children:  Charles F. born 29-Oct-1880 died 15-Sep-1939; Jacob E born 3-Aug-1883 died 17-Aug-1959; Frederick Henry Shively born 31-Oct-1885; Harry Shively born 10-Feb-1887 died 6-Oct-1918; Arthur J born 9-Dec-1890 died 5-Mar-1968; Francis H born 25-Feb-1895 died 21-Aug-1958 and Clarence W born 10-Feb-1897.

Gowen Street Man Dies In Hospital

Jacob E. Shively, 76, of 615 West Gowen Street, died at 12:30 this morning in Northumberland County Institutional Hospital, Trevorton Road, where he had been a medical patient for five days. Death, due to a heart condition and asthma, terminated an illness of three months' duration.

A lifelong resident of Shamokin, Mr. Shively was born August 3, 1883, a son of the late Jacob and Sarah Jane (Chubb) Shively.  He was educated in local schools and during most of his adult life worked as a miner.  Mr. Shively was last employed at Glen Burn Colliery.  He retired approximately 10 years ago.

The late West Gowen Street resident first was married to Miss Kathryn Krock, who died in 1920.  Later he was married to the former Florence Miller, who preceded him in death two years ago.  Mr. Shively was a member of St. John's Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Red Men Lodge of Shamokin.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Florence Fisher, Shamokin; four sons, Howard, Lemoyne; William, Berlin Heights, Ohio; Russell, Sandusky, Ohio; and Elwood, Fremont, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and three brothers, Arthur, Shamokin; Clarence, Kulpmont; and Fred, Lewiston.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3:00 in Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets.  The Rev. George C. Bingaman, past of St. John's United Church of Christ, will officiate.  Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Trevorton Road.  Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening, from 7:00 to 9:00 and Thursday until time of services.

From the Pennsylvania death certificates it is recorded that Harry Shively was the son of Jacob Shively who was born in Germany and Sara Tschopp who was born in Pennsylvania.  Harry was born on 20-Feb-1887 and died 6-Oct-1918 from tobar pneumonia with contributing influenza.  He was a miner and was buried 8-Oct-1918 in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Shamokin, PA.

Arthur James Shively, 77,  of 406 West Spruce Street, Shamokin, died at 4:45 p.m. yesterday in Shamokin State General Hospital.  Ill for four years, he was hospitalized since February 26.

Born in Mount Carmel, Arthur Shively was a son of the late Jacob and Sarah (Chubb) Shively. He moved to Shamokin as a child and remained until his death. Mr. Shively was employed in regional breakers for many years, then became custodian of Shamokin High School, a post from which he retired in 1959. He later worked for Trinity Evangelical Church and Martz Milk Company as a fireman.

Arthur J. Shively and Miss Carrie Heitzman were married December 9, 1910 by the Rev. C. B. Schneder, who was a pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ.  The late resident, who was educated in Shamokin schools, was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and of the P.O.S. of A.

Surviving are the widow,, one son, Mahlon, Trevorton Road; a granddaughter reared by the Shivelys, Mrs. Roger (Nancy) Shuck, Mifflinburg; one great grandchild, and two brothers, Clarence, of Kulpmont, and Fred, of Lewiston.

Seventh Street Resident Expires

Francis Howard Shively, 63, of 540 South Seventh Street, widely known local American Red Cross first aid instructor and former Shamokin High School football trainer, died yesterday afternoon at 4:15 in Hamburg Sanitorium, where he was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis.

Mr. Shively was admitted first to Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Danville, on November 6, 1957.  He was taken to the Hamburg sanitarium on November 13, 1957.

Widely known as "Hank", Mr. Shively was born in Shamokin February 25, 1895, a son of the late Jacob and Sarah (Chubb) Shively.  He attended Stevens School.

Last employed as a night watchman at Shamokin Realty Company, Inc., Mr. Shively worked many years as a maintenance man when the former J. H. and C. K. Eagle Silk Mill was operated in the realty company building.

The late South Seventh Street resident served as trainer for Shamokin High School football teams from 1940 to 1948.  He taught approximately 35 classes in first aid under the American Red Cross program during and following World War II. He was awarded a certificate of achievement for his work as a local instructor.

Mr. Shively served 16 years as assessor in the Fourth Ward and held the post at the time of his death.  He was a member of the Past Presidents' Association of Patriotic Order Sons of America, and was secretary of Camp 30, Shamokin, when he was stricken ill.  He was secretary of West End Fire Company, also.

The late Mr. Shively was a member of Chestnut Street Methodist Church and Taghneghdoarus Tribe of Red Men.  He was married in Shamokin, April 16, 1921, to the former Miss Pearl Wolfgang.

Surviving in addition to the widow are a son, Lawrence, of Colmar; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph Spencer, Trevorton Road; Mrs. Seibert Salter, Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Nelson Woolcock, Paxinos; four brothers, Jacob and Arthur, Shamokin; Fred, Lewiston and Clarence, Kulpmont, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3:00 in Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets.  Rev. Donald Shafer, pastor of Chestnut Street Methodist Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.  Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening, from 7:00 to 9:00, and Monday until time of services.

Jacob and Sarah Shively are listed on the 1880 Shamokin Borough, Northumberland Co., PA census.  Jacob is age 27, a laborer in mines, born in Germany and Sarah is age 21 born in PA.  By 1900 Sarah J. is a widow and listed on the 1900 Borough of Shamokin, Northumberland Co., PA census.  Listed in the household is Sarah J., widow, age 41, son Charles age 19, son Jacob E. age 16, son Fredrick H. age 14, son Harry W. age 12, son Arthur J. age 9, son Francis H. age 5 and son Clarence W. age 3.  Sarah continues to be listed on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Northumberland Co., PA census records.

Explosion of Gas in a Shamokin Colliery Had Fatal Results

A blast in a gangway at the Luke Fidler Colliery to-day ignited a large body of gas, which exploded with great force.  Jacob Shively, Peter Sidrazki and Isaac Thomas were blown along the gangway a number of feet.  Thomas was the first to recover and, although he was terribly burned, he called to his companions and, when they responded, he told them to put on a brave front and follow him to the bottom of the shaft.  The force of the explosion was such that their lamps and been extinguished.

Suddenly Thomas was startled to see a bright light appear just in front of him. Shively's clothes were on fire.  Thomas rushed forward, closely followed by Sidrazki, to extinguish the flames, but Shively, crazed by burns and excitement, darted away from them.  A thrilling chase resulted, but soon ended, when Shively sank exhausted to the bottom of the gangway.  Then what remained of his burning clothing was torn off.  Meanwhile the explosion had attracted a number of miners to the scene.

They found Sidrazki dying, while Shively was all but dead.  Thomas, although he was burned about the hands and limbs and had inhaled fire, was not so seriously injured as his comrades.  The victims were stripped of their clothing and wrapped in oiled blankets,after which they were removed to their homes.  Shively's back, chest and face were shockingly burned.  While Sidrazki's abdomen was burned so badly that the intestines were exposed.  He died soon after reaching his home.  He was 20 years old and unmarried.

Shively, whose recovery impossible, is 44 years old and has a wife and five children.

Sarah Jane Shively did not remarry after the death of Jacob and lived to be 94 years old. Extracted from The Shamokin News Dispatch, Friday, April 3, 1953, Page 2, Column 5:

94-Year-Old City Resident Expires

Mrs. Sarah Shively, 94, of 633 Boyd Street, died yesterday afternoon in the Evangelical Church Home for the Aged, Lewisburg, where she was a patient for 17 months.

Mrs. Shively was born December 29, 1858, in Lykens, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Chubb.  She was married to the late Jacob Shively, who died 55 years ago.

Mrs. Shively was a resident of Shamokin for 75 years. She lived in Mount Carmel for several months before moving to Shamokin.  The late matron was one of the oldest members of St. John Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Survivors include five sons, Jacob, Arthur, and Franis, Shamokin; Frederick, Lewiston,and Clarence, Kulpmont;  20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 1:30 in the Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets.  Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Viewing will vein the funeral home Sunday  evening, from 7:00 to 9:00, and Monday until time of the services.  Rev. F. H. Fletcher, past of St. John Evangelical United Brethren Church, will officiate during services.

The parents of Sarah Jane Chubb (Tschopp) were George Tschopp born 28-Nov-1827 Northumberland Co., PA died 5-Jul-1900 Dauphin Co., PA.  He was married to Magdalena Schoffstall born 2-Jun-1833 Dauphin Co., PA died 10-Jan-1904 Dauphin Co., PA.  Extracted from The Harrisburg Telegraph, Friday Evening, July 13, 1900, Page 7, Column 2:

Gratz, Pa., July 12 --Last Friday morning the people of town were shocked to hear of the death of George Tschopp, sr., of town.  The evening previous he retired with his usual health. At about half-past 10 o'clock his wife heard a rumbling sound in his throat and by the time she had called the neighbors he had expired.  Interment took place in the Lutheran and Reformed cemetery Saturday forenoon, the Rev. Leopold, of Girardville, officiating in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. O. E. Pflueger.  Deceased was aged 72 years and leaves a widow and five grown children to mourn his loss.  He had been an old soldier of the War of the Rebellion. A grandson of the deceased was buried at the same time.

There are times in the hobby of genealogy when a Shively story comes along that just has to be researched and shared. Following is a newspaper article that was located and some supporting data found to support the story.

Extracted from The Democratic Press, Ravenna (Portage County), Ohio, Thursday, July 9, 1874, Page 2, Column 5: About the first of May Samuel Shively and wife made his advent into this goodly city, and took up his abode.  On Wednesday last, a brother-in-law, who, it seems, was bound to him by a two-fold bond or relationship,, presented himself to constable Trail, and gave him a photograph of his interesting relative, and requested him to lay upon him the hand of the law.  Mr. Trail soon had him in charge, when upon a hearing the following facts were elicited:

Samuel Shively is a native of Westmoreland county, Pa., was born of poor but honest parents, and when he had come to years of maturity, gave his hand and his heart to Susannah Henry.  They lived in peace and harmony until their home was blessed with four little Shivelies.  A couple of years since the Shivelies removed to Tiffin, this State, taking with them a sister of Mrs. Shively's.  During these two years Mr. Shively, became convinced that he could make a better wife of his sister-in-law then he could out of Susannah.  So on the 20th of April last, leaving Mrs. Shively and all of the little Shivelies in Tiffin, he departed with Miss Henry, junior, for Dayton, where he obtained the legal documents which would enable him to conter upon Miss Henry the honorable distinction of being known as Mrs. Shively No. 2. But "man proposes &c", and Mr. Z. Henry, a brother-in-law of this too much married man, heard of the state of affairs, and traced the happy couple to Alliance, where he had him arrested on a charge of bigamy.  He was bound over to answer in $500.

Pennsylvania death certificates were located.  For Samuel Shively he was born 11-Oct-1842 in Pennsylvania, a son of Jacob Shively and (unknown) Kepple.  Samuel died in Westmoreland Co., PA. on 9-Jul-1909.  He was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Westmoreland Co.,  His stone lists Samuel Shiebler 1842-1909, Co F 103 Pa Inf and wife, Mary M (1852-1924).   The death certificate for Mary Shively states born Sep-1852, daughter of Frederick Henry and Liddy Eseman.  Mary died 2-Apr-1924 in Westmoreland Co.   The death certificate for the first wife of Samuel Shively was located and it would appear she married a second time to a Mr. Campbell.  The death certificate lists Susan Campbell, born 25-May-1846, daughter of Frederick Henry and Lydiann Gross.  Susan died 3-Jul-1914 in Westmoreland Co.  She was buried in Brush Creek Cem.

Further supporting the Henry family connections was the 1907 newspaper obituary of Lydia A. Henry which mentions Sue Campbell, Z. T. Henry, and Mrs. Samuel Shively.

Aged Woman Dead

Aged And Highly Esteemed Woman Formerly Of Jeannette Passes Away

Mrs. Lydia A. Henry, widow of Frederick Henry, late of West Jeannette, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. P. Myers, of the Fifth Ward, Greensburg, last Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.  She was aged 59 years, on month and 28 days, and her death was due to cerebro hemorrhages.

Mrs. Henry was a noble Christian woman and leaves a blessed heritage to her loved ones.  She is survived by the following children:  Z. T. Henry, of West Virginia; Noah F. Henry, of Tarentum; Mrs. Sue Campbell and Mrs. Ellen Gongaware, of Manor; Mrs. Samuel Shively and Mrs. F. P. Myers, of Greensburg.  She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  Her husband, Fred Henry, died several years ago.

Funeral services were held at the residence of F. P. Myers, Greensburg, at 10 o'clock, Friday morning, after which interment was made in Brush Creek cemetery.

Located on the 1880 Hempfield District, Westmoreland Co., PA census is Samuel Scheibler age 37, wife Mary age 27, son Harry age 5 and son John age 2.  On the 1900 Hempfield Townshp, Westmoreland Co., PA census is Samuel Sheibler born Oct 1843 age 56, wife Mary born Sep 1852 age 48, son John born Apr 1879 age 21, daughter Anna born 1880 age 19, son Howard born Dec 1882 age 17, son Edward born Mar 1884 age 16, daughter Laura born May 1886 age 14, son Lawrence born Mar 1891 age 9 and nephews Russell White and Floyd White.

The newspaper article above from Ravenna, Ohio mentions that Samuel Shively and first wife, Susannah Henry, had four children.  Two of the children for Samuel and Susannah may have included William Shively and Mary Jane Shively. Located in the records was Mary Jane Shively who married William Shuey.  Extracted from the Westmoreland Co. marriage records it is known that Mary Jane Shively and William Shuey were married on 8-Mar-1887 at the residence of Samuel Shively. Consent of the father, Samuel Shively, was given for the marriage.  The parents of Mary Jane Shively were listed as Samuel and Susan Shively.

The newspaper obituary for John Shivley, son of Samuel Shively and Mary Henry, mentions half-sister, Mary J. Shuey and half-brother William Shivley.  Extracted from The Daily Courier, Connellsville (Fayette County, PA), Monday, December 28, 1953, Page 7, Column 5:

John Shivley

John F. Shivley, 75, died at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon following a heart attack at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Wise, at New Stanton, where he made his home.  Surviving are five children, including Mrs. Wise; 10 grandchildren; five brothers and sisters; a half-sister, Mrs. Mary J. Shuey of Jones Mills, and a half-brother, William of Turtle Creek.  The funeral was held this afternoon with interment in Hillview Cemetery.

William Shively And 1st Wife, Emma Bigelow (Biglow), From Jefferson County, Kentucky To Knox County, Kentucky

William Shively was born 9-May-1862 in Jefferson Co., KY and died 6-Sep-1946. He was the son of John Henry Shively (1822-1897) and Clementine Camp (1830-1903).  John Henry Shively was the son of William Henry Shively (1786-1866) and Nancy Earickson.  

William Shively married 1st Emma Bigelow (Biglow) in Jefferson Co., KY on 27-May-1885. Emma Bigelow was born 27-Sep-1863 in KY and died 1-Mar-1926.  She was the daughter of James Bigelow (1825-1889) and Bridget (1838-1909), who were both born in Ireland and buried in Saint Louis Cemetery, Jefferson Co., KY. Extracted from The Courier-Journal, Louisville, KY, Friday, May 29,1885, Page 8, Column 4:

Shively-Biglow Nuptials

Mr. Wm. Shively and Miss Emma Biglow were married Wednesday at the residence of the bride's father, on Walnut street, between Fourteenth and Fifteenth.  The Rev. M. D. Lawler pronounced the marriage service.  A large number of friends were present, and the new married couple were made the recipients of a number of handsome presents.  They left on the midnight train for the South, where they will make an extended bridal trip.

William Shively and Emma are located on the 1900 Town of Corbin, Knox Co., KY census. In the household are William born May-1862, wife Emma born Sep-1865, daughter Francis born Oct-1887, daughter Virginia born Oct-1887, and daughter Lillian .  William and Emma are located on the 1900 and 1910 Knox Co., KY census.  

The newspaper obituary for Emma Bigelow Shively was extracted from The Middlesboro Daily News, Middlesboro, KY, Monday March 1, 1926, Page 1, Column 5:

Mrs. William Shively, 62, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. J. Ballard at an early hour this morning, after an illness of several months.  The body was taken today to the family residence on Chester avenue.  Funeral Mass will be held at the Catholic church Tuesday morning at 9:30.  Burial will take place in Corbin, Wednesday.  A delegation from the Elk's club will accompany the family to Corbin. Surviving Mrs. Shively are her husband and three daughters, Mrs. W. J. Ballard of Middlesboro, Mrs. B. L. Lundy of Corbin and Mrs. Fred Donaldson of Newburg, Mo.

Extracted from The Middlesboro Daily News, Wednesday, March 3, 1926, Page 4, Column 1:         Among those who accompanied the body of Mrs. William Shively to Corbin this morning for burial were:  Mr. Shively, Mr. and Mrs. Ballard, Mr. and Mrs. Donaldson of Newburg, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Lundy of Corbin, Father Williams, Mr. and Mrs. William Burch, Mrs. J. W. Bates and Mrs. Tom Colson.  Mrs. Shively, who had a host of friends in this section, died early Monday morning.  Funeral Mass was held at St. Julians Catholic church Tuesday morning.

William Shively married a second time to Virginia (maiden name unknown). Virginia Shively  was born 12-Mar-1884 and died 13-Jan-1973, buried in Elizabeth Chapel Cemetery, Organ Cave, Greenbrier Co., WV.  

The newspaper obituary for William Shively was located in The Middlesboro Daily News, Saturday, September 7, 1946, Page 8, Column 3:

William "Uncle Bill" Shively, former resident of Middlesboro, died yesterday afternoon at his home at Corbin.  He had been in failing health for the last year.  Mr. Shively was an engineer for the L. & N. Railroad until his retirement six years ago.

He is survived by three daughters, one of whom is Mr. W. J. Ballard of Middlesboro, and a number of grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of a daughter from Missouri.

William Marion Shiveley (Shively) was born 9-October-1840 and died 24-December-1925. He was the son of Jacob Shively and Elinor Hornback.  William Marion Shiveley was married on 14-January-1862 in Adams County, Ohio to Nancy Elanore Easter.  She died in Scioto County, Ohio on 29-May-1923.

William M. Shiveley and Nancy Elanore Easter were the parents of at least eleven children:  George Washington born 15-Aug-1863 died 26-September-1924, Charles Edward born 8-January-1864 died 30-July-1931, Alice Jane born ca 1866, William Marion born 9-March-1868 died 13-January-1920, Charlotte Ella born 1-January-1870 died 19-July-1924, Mollie Baltimore born ca 1871, Maggie May born 15-March-1873 died 8-April-1941, Cora Ellen born ca 1875, Jacob Austin born 17-Dec-1876 died 27-January-1881, Clark Ayres born 26-October-1878 died 14-October-1921 and Henry Anson born 7-April-1883 died 28-January-1917.  The family of William M. Shiveley (Shively) and Nancy Elanore Easter are located on the 1870, 1880, and 1900 Jefferson Township, Adams County, Ohio census records.  They are listed on the 1900 and 1910 Niles Township, Scioto County, Ohio census records.

A newspaper search was done to try to find additional information on the children of William Marion Shiveley and Nancy Easter.  Located in the Portsmouth Daily Times, Friday, September 26, 1924, Page 20, Columns 5-6:

George Shively, well known carpenter, dropped dead of heart trouble in his home, 1507 Kinney street, about six o'clock this morning. He had not been in the best of health for the past eight weeks, but during the past two weeks felt much improved. He had been able to be up and around the house and arose as usual this morning. He had been up only a short time when an attack of heart trouble caused his death.

Mr. Shively was born in the Selig community, near West Union, and came to this county after marriage and had spent all of his married life here. On August 25 last he was 62 years of age.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Christine Boss Shively, three sons, Clarence of this city; Nicholas, Roanoke; Stanley, Seattle, Wash., and two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Stanley, Cincinnati, and Mrs. Cecil Marshall, Cleveland.  A brother, Edward Shiveley, of this city and four sisters, Mrs. Jane Copas, Manchester, Mrs. May Fitzpatrick, Jacktown, Adams county, Mrs. Frank Johnson, Duck Run, and Mrs. Grant Rogers, Rome.  His aged father, Rev. William Shiveley, resides at Friendship.

Since coming to Portsmouth Mr. Shiveley had made many friends who will be sorry to learn of his death.

Charles E. Shively of 1125 Eighth street, died in Portsmouth General hospital at 12:05 p.m. Thursday. Death was due to complications.  He had submitted to a major operation about a year ago and had never fully recovered.

He was born in Rome, Adams county, Jan. 8, 1864, the son of Marion and Nancy Easter Shively.He came to Portsmouth in 1911 and has made his home here since then.He was for years employed as a carpenter at the Selby Shoe Co.    On Sept. 14, 1887 he married Alice Thornton and to this union six children were born.  He was a member of the First United Brethren church and of the K. of P. lodge.

He leaves his widow and children, Mrs. Mabel Wise, Mrs. Helen Meyers, Miss Minnie Shively of  Cincinnati, Miss Kathryn Shively of New York city, and Harry and Charles Shively at home.  He also leaves five grandchildren and these sisters, Mrs. James Copas, Cherry Fork, Mrs. Mollie Rogers, Rome, Mrs. May Kirkpatrick, West Union and Mrs. Cora Johnson, city.

Funeral services will be held at the Windel-Howland funeral home Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. T. C. Harper in charge.  Burial will be in Memorial cemetery, Wheelersburg.

WEST UNION, April 9 --Funeral services for Mrs. Mae Rogers Kilpatrick, 68, who was found dead at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Foster here early Tuesday will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the local Methodist church with Rev. W. L. Stafford in charge.  Burial will be in the I.O.O.F cemetery here with Latour Lafferty in charge.

Mrs. Kilpatrick resided here for years.  She lived for some years at Dunkinsville, where her first husband, Reuben Rogers, died.  Her late husband was Richard Kilpatrick.

Mrs. Kilpatrick is survived by the following children:  Mrs. Icy Scott, Mrs. Marie Prior, Mrs. Gladys Mann and Mrs. Robert Whitacre all of Columbus, Mrs. Foster of West Union, Mrs. Ruby Hanes of Buena Vista, a son Marion Rogers of West Union; two sisters, Mrs. Molly Rogers of West Union and Mrs. Cora Johnson of Portsmouth.

Twenty-five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

After a short illness with pneumonia, which followed an attack of measles, death Sunday night, at 10:30, claimed Henry Shively, aged 35, a well-known resident of Friendship, on the West Side.

Nancy Elanore Easter was born on 7-April-1840 in Ohio.  She was the daughter of John Easter and Elanore Davidson.  Nancy Elanore Easter was married on 14-January-1862 in Adams County, Ohio to William Marion Shiveley (Shively).  She died in Scioto County, Ohio on 29-May-1923.  William Marion Shiveley was the son of Jacob Shively and Elinor Hornback. He was born 9-October-1840 and died 24-December-1925.

William M. Shiveley and Nancy Elanore Easter were the parents of at least eleven children:  George Washington born ca 1863, Charles Edward born ca 1864, Alice Jane born ca 1866, William Marion born ca 1868, Charlotte Ella born ca 1870, Mollie Baltimore born ca 1871, Maggie May born ca 1873, Cora Ellen born ca 1875, Jacob Austin born ca 1876, Clark Ayres born ca 1878 and Henry Anson born ca 1883.  The family of William M. Shiveley (Shively) and Nancy Elanore Easter are located on the 1870, 1880, and 1900 Jefferson Township, Adams County, Ohio census records.  They are listed on the 1900 and 1910 Niles Township, Scioto County, Ohio census records.

Mrs. Nancy Eleanor Easter Shively was born April 7, 1840, died May 29, 1923, aged 83 years, one month and 22 days.  She was united in marriage to Rev. William M. Shively, January 14, 1862.  To this union was born eleven children, six sons and five daughters, four sons having preceded her in death. She leaves one brother, five daughters, and two sons, 84 grand children, and 61 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her death.  She united with the M. P. church at the age of 17 years and was happily converted and lived a devoted Christian life until death.  She was an indulgent mother, benevolent and kind to all with whom she associated.  She has gone to her reward.

William Shively, 85, a pioneer resident of Adams county died Thursday at his home in Rome, his death being due to gangrene.  He is survived by one son, Edward of this city and numerous relatives at Friendship, West Side.  Burial took place Saturday afternoon in the Friendship cemetery.

Grace M Shively was at least a second wife for Stires D Shively.  She was the daughter of Elijah and Margaret Gariss.  Her marriage to Mr. Shively was at least a second marriage for her.  She is located on the 1880 Pahaquarry Township, Warren County, NJ census with her parents.  In 1910 the following census information lists Walpack Township, Sussex County, NJ Elijah Gariss age 68, wife Margaret age 69, son Chester age 23, daughter Grace M Volke age 33 and grandson Otis Volke age 10.

Lt. COMDR. Albert E. Shively, commanding officer of the U.S. Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center in Binghamton, N.Y. has received a commendation for his work, as a regular Navy officer, with the Naval Reserve.

Lt. Comdr. Shively is a former resident of Minisink Hills and a graduate of Stroudsburg High School, class of 1932 and East Stroudsburg State Teachers College in 1937.

East Stroudsburg -- Frank Fraunfelter, of 223 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, died on Saturday in the General Hospital of Monroe County.

Born in Bangor, a son of the late William and Catherine Kelso Fraunfelter, he had resided in Stroudsburgs most of his life.

He was a retired silk weaver, having been employed at Monroe Silk Mill, Stroudsburg, and King Ribbon Mill, East Stroudsburg, before his retirement.

A member of St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg, he served in the U.S. Army in World War I.

Surviving are his widow, Mary E. (McGuire) Fraunfelter, at home; four daughters, Mrs. Albert Shively, Marlow Heights, Maryland, Mrs. Robert Long, Stroudsburg, Mrs. Harold Hile, Stroudsburg R.D., and Mrs. Clair Graver, Stroudsburg; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and two sisters; Mrs. Arthur Snyder, Easton, and Mrs. Helen Serlass, Bethlehem.

A Mass Of Resurrection will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas J. Cawley will be Celebrant.

Burial will be in the Gates of Heaven section of Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

Former Stroudsburg Man Had Good View of Landing

Stroudsburg --- When Apollo made its historic splashdown in the Pacific Thursday, Albert Shively, formerly of Stroudsburg, and one of the best views to watch the proceedings.

Shively, a Marine captain, didn't see the event on television from a comfortable living room, but rather caught a bird's eye view from the U.S.S. New Orleans, the veteran recovery ship.

Mrs. Frank Fraunfelter of 903 Clay Ave., Stroudsburg, Shively's grandmother, said she was "glued to the television set all afternoon" in the hope of seeing her grandson.

"I didn't spot him, but then I really didn't know what type of uniform he would be wearing or anything," she said.

Mrs. Fraunfelter said her grandson learned he would be on the ship in June.  Shively, 28, had previously served as the only Marine on U.S.S. Paul Revere.

"As I understand it, the skipper of the U.S.S. New Orleans had specifically asked that he be on the ship.  I believe he was in the line of men who welcomed the astronauts aboard," she said.

Shively, who stayed at his grandparents' house during the summer and other times throughout the year, attended East Stroudsburg High School.

Mrs. Fraunfelter says she sometimes has mixed feelings about the space program as "I guess almost everybody does."

"I only know for sure my grandson supports it.  He probably knows more about it, so in the long run I'm with him."
