Charles A. Shively, who resided near the Bixler-Jones foundry between Freemansburg and Bethlehem, met sudden death Sunday morning at 4:30 o'clock on the Central Railroad of New Jersey tracks. He was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company and worked on Friday night and was through then at the shops until Monday morning. He did not sleep on Saturday and on Saturday evening started with some friends on a fishing trip to the Lehigh near Freemansburg. After fishing during the night Shively started for home. He sat down to rest on the outside edge of the sills of the cast-bound track and fell asleep.

The engineer of the freight saw the huddled figure of a man sitting close to the rails, his head bent over in his hands and sounded the whistle. The figure failed to move, though the shrill blasts blew loud and long. It was impossible to stop the train. Death was instantaneous. A deep cut back of the right ear, the back of the skull split, and a broken shoulder blade were the fatal injuries. The body was carried to the Central Railroad station and later brought by Undertaker Weirbach, of South Bethlehem, to the late home of the deceased, where Coroner Schleicher held a view yesterday morning.

The deceased was the son of Peter and Eva Green Shively, of Catasauqua, and was born in Lower Saucon township on August 7, 1875. He was married on September 17, 1889, to Miss Kate Cope, who survives him, as does a little son, Roland. His parents, three sisters, Mrs. Milton Serfoss, of Freemansburg; Mrs. James Kratzer and Mrs. Elmer Trine, of Catasauqua, and three brothers,  Edward, Herbert and William, of Catasauqua, also survive. The funeral will take place on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. Interment will be made at Catasauqua.

The death of John W. Shively, an aged and respected citizen of Champion, occurred Friday afternoon after a lingering illness wth a complication of diseases. The deceased was born at North Jackson November 26, 1832, and was in his 75th year.  He is survived by his wife, four sons and six daughters. The funeral services will be held Monday at 10 o'clock at the late home. Burial will take place at Oakwood.

Mrs. Jane Shively, widow of the late John Shively, one of the oldest and most highly regarded pioneer of Champion township, passed away at her home near Champion Thursday evening at 8:55, following an illness of one week. Mrs. Shively was overtaken by a stroke of paralysis seven days ago and failed to rally from the attack. Announcement of her death is received with deep regret by the people of her community. She was born on May 1, 1840 in Somersetshire, England and came to this country with her parents when she was four years old. The family located in Champion and she had lived on the farm where she died for the past fifty two years. She was a woman of find christian character and a life long membership of the Disciple church of Champion. She is survived by four sons, Thomas M. of Warren, William J. of Farmington; Fred J. of Uniondale, Ind.; Carl, at home, and six daughters, Mrs. Sarah H. Durbin, Uniondale, Ind.; Mrs. Ella E. McIlree, Mrs. Lucy A. Chinnock, Mrs. Cora J. Cummins, Mrs. Kitty D. Fry, Mrs. Lena M. Cummins, of Warren.

She also leaves twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at her late home in Champion, Monday at 1 o'clock, when Rev. Bright of Sharon will officiate. The body will be laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery in Warren.

Mrs. Margaret Deiley Shively, widow of Samuel Shively, formerly of Stockertown, Easton's oldest resident, is celebrating her 101st birthday anniversary today at the the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Thomas, 321 High street, Easton; where she has lived since October. Mrs. Shively was born near Stockertown on June 25, 1823, and has lived in this vicinity all her life. She is a member of the Fork's Lutheran church. Many friends and relatives have expressed their intention of visiting and congratulating her today.

William Edgar Shiveley  (Shively) was born 5-Jul-1874 in Adams County, Ohio and died 22-May-1957 in Clinton County, Ohio. He was married to Estella Jane Reid on 6-Oct-1904. Estella Jane Reid was born 1-Oct-1876 in Adams County, Ohio and died 16-Mar-1969 in Clinton County, Ohio. (In the public records for these families the surname is recorded as both Shiveley and Shively). William was the son of Daniel M. Shiveley (born 1-Jun-1838 died 7-Oct-1925) and Nancy Margaret Hamilton (born 20-Apr-1850 died 19-Jul-1930). Daniel M. Shively was the son of James Shively (1811-1873) and Mary Elizabeth Westbrook (1809-1866). 

Listed on the 1880 Jefferson Township South, Adams County, Ohio census is the household of Dan Shively age 42, wife Nancy M. age 31, son James age 12, son Hamilton age 11, daughter Hattie age 9, son William E. age 6, and son Lester age 4 months. On the 1910 Tiffin Township, West Union Village, Adams County, Ohio is the household of Henry Scott age 72, nephew William E. William E. Shiveley

WIlliam E. Shiveley, 82, of 413 S. Mulberry St., died Wednesday at 11:50 p.m. at Clinton Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since suffering a broken hip May 1.

The son of Daniel and Nancy Hamilton Shively, he was born at Blue Creek in Adams county, July 5, 1874 and was married Oct. 6, 1904 to Miss Estella J. Reid, who survives. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Shiveley, a retired watchmaker, had lived in Wilmington for 13 years.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elva Trickler of Wilmington and Mrs. Ethel Reno of Hillsboro; one son, Edgar R. Shiveley of Wilmington; on sister, Miss Hattie Shiveley of Manchester, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the West Union Baptist Church and interment by Reynolds Funeral Home will be in the West Union IOOF cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9.

Mrs. Estella Shively

Mrs. Estella Jane Shiveley, 92, 413 S. Mulberry St., died of complications SUnday at 12:05 p.m. at Lucas nursing home, Wilson Rd. She had been ill the past five years. She was married to William Shiveley, who died in 1957.

She was born Oct. 1, 1876 in Adams County, the daughter of James G. and Martha McClughen Reid. She was a member of Clinton County Senior Citizens and the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elva Trickler of this city, Mrs. Ethel (Wasson) Reno of Hillsboro; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edgar Shively, this city; two sisters, Miss Sara Reid of West Union, Mrs. Lucy McClanahan of Columbus; five grandsons, one granddaughter, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild. Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Fred McCluskey and the Rev. Edward Geisler Wednesday at 1 pm. at Reynolds-Sulcer funeral home. Burial will be in West Union Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Levi Stephen Shively was born 10-Oct-1884 in Piatt County, IL and died 17-Jul-1976 in La Verne, Los Angeles County, CA.  He was the son of John J. Shively and Leah Blickenstaff. She was born 13-Apr-1882 in Ashland, Saunders County, NE  being a daughter of George E. Whisler and Elmira Harley. Emma died 7-Feb-1933 in Muncie, Delaware County, IN. Levi married 2nd Emma Wolf born 27-Nov-1901 being a daughter of J. Emrey Wolf and Mary Trostle. Edna died 4-Jan-1992 in California.

Levi Shively

Levi S. Shively of 2700 Magnolia Ave., La Verne, died Saturday in Woods Memorial Convalescent Hospital, La Verne.

Mr. Shively was born Oct. 10, 1884 in Cerro Gordo, Ill., and moved to La Verne in 1960 from Bridgewater, Va.

He graduated from the Academy at Mt. Morris College, received his AB degree from the University of Michigan in 1907 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Shively received his AM degree from the University of Chicago and elected to Sigma Xi in 1916. In 1917 he received his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago with Magna Cum Laude.

Mr. Shively taught mathematics and astronomy for over 50 years in Mt. Morris College and Ball State University. In his post retirement he taught at Bridgewater College in Virginia. He was a charter member of the Church of Brethren for many  years.

Besides his widow, Edna, he is survived by four sons, WIllard W. of Chicago, Ill., Forest W. of West Palm Beach, Fla., Dr. Ralph L. of Lake Bluff, Illinois and Dr. John L. of West Lafayette, Ind.; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. in the La Verne Church of the Brethren following the morning worship service. The Rev. Herbert Ruthrauff and Jefferson Mathis will officiate.

Friends may make memorial contributions to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana for a mathematics scholarship.

Levi S. Shively, Ball State math professor, dies

Memorial services were held earlier this week in LaVerne, Calif., for Levi S. Shively, 91, professor emeritus of mathematics at Ball State University, who died Friday.

Dr. Shively, a former college president and internationally known mathematician and author, had made his home in California for several years.

He retired in 1951 after 42 years of college teaching and administration, including 23 years at Ball State and three years as president of Mt. Morris (Ill.) College. He was the author of a college geometry textbook which was used in the U.S., Canada, and translated into Swedish. Ball State honored Dr. Shively in 1968 by naming a graduate residence hall after him.

A native of Cerro Gordo, Ill., he attended Mt. Morris College and earned the AB degree at the University of Michigan in 1908. He earned his AM and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago in 1916 and 1917 respectively.

For a short time he taught in the rural schools of Illinois and from 1908 to 1915 at Mt. Morris College where he later was dean and president. He also taught at Western Illinois University.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, national honoraries, he was active in the Mathematical Association of America, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. He belonged to the Church of the Brethren in Muncie. 

He also served on the board of Manchester College, North Manchester.

Following his retirement at Ball State, he traveled for the Mission Board of the Church of the Brethren and later taught at the Bridgewater (Va.) College where his wife served as dean of women. They moved to California in 1961.

Survivors include his wife Edna,  four sons, Forest W., West Palm Beach, Fla.; Dr. John L., West Lafayette; Ralph L., Lake Bluff, Ill, and Willard, Chicago.

Memorials may be sent to the Ball State University Foundation for the student emergency loan fund.

Mrs. L. S. Shively Dies, Burial To Be In Illinois

Brief funeral services were conducted last night at the Meeks mortuary for Mrs. Emma. G. Shively, 50, wife of Levi S. Shively, 407 Riverside avenue, who died yesterday in Ball Memorial Hospital after an illness which began early in January. The body will be taken at 11 o'clock this morning to Sterling, Ill., for funeral and burial.

Mrs. Shively had lived in Muncie since the family came here from Mt. Morris, Ill., five years ago. Her husband is associate professor of mathematics at Ball State Teachers College. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren on West  Jackson street, and the Monday Afternoon Club.

Surviving besides the husband are four sons, Willard W., Forest W., Ralph L. and John L. Shively; the father, George E. Whisler, of Sterling, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Elmer Billsborough of Mt. Morris, Ill., and one brother, Samuel L. Whisler, of Waldron, Mich.

The Shively researchers are asking for any additional information regarding the document found on Fold3 when searching for War of 1812 information. From the document it is recorded that Michael Shively served in His Majesty's 73rd Regiment of Foot. From Wikipedia the following information is taken "The 73rd Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army raised in 1780. It amalgamated with the 42nd Regiment of Foot to form the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) in 1881. The regiment was raised as the 2nd Battalion, 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot in March 1780, with eight officers from the 1st Battalion being detached to help raise the new battalion. The battalion was sent to India in January 1781 and took part in the Siege of Mangalore in autumn 1783 during the Second Anglo-Mysore War. It was still in India when the battalion received regimental status in 1786 as the 73rd (Highland) Regiment of Foot. The new regiment remained in India and saw action at the Siege of Seringapatam in 1792 during the Third Anglo-Mysore War, the Siege of Pondicherry in August 1793 during the French Revolutionary Wars and the capture of the Dutch settlements in Ceylon in 1795. It went on to form part of the storming party at the Siege of Seringapatam in April 1799 during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War before returning to England in July 1806."

Transcription of the document by Fold3 says Michael Shively was born in Parish of Wilham in or near the Market Town of Wilham in the County of Westembergh.  No such county or town could be found in England.  In looking at the document it appears the County could be Wirtembergh which would lead to suspect he might have been German. 

The document gives a description of Michael Shively. In 1806 he is listed as being 36 years of age (born about 1770), 5 feet 5 1/2 inches in height, brown hair, hazle eyes and dark complexion.

John Shively, Jr. was born 3-Oct-1837 and died 4-May-1909 in Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio.  He was the son of John Shively, Sr. and Mary Geer. (For additional information on John and Mary Shively see the March 5, 2011 Shively blog article. John Shively, Sr. may have married 2nd to Mrs. Mahetable Anderson in Vinton County, Ohio in June-1856. She was the widow of John Anderson). John Shively, Jr. was married to Ellen Remy in Vinton County, Ohio on 7-Aug-1862. Ellen (Hellen) Remy was the daughter of John Remy and Milberry Redfearn. John Remy died 27-Apr-1850.  Milberry married 2nd to David Jolley in Vinton County on 30-Sep-1852. Milberry married 3rd to John Roach in Vinton County on 25-Aug-1863.

Listed on the 1870 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio census is the household of John Shively age 70, wife Mary age 66, domestic servant Sarah Reddick age 27 and domestic servant Angeline Johnston age 30.  John Shively, Jr. is listed on the 1870 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio census as John Shively age 32, wife Ellen age 22, daughter Sarah F. age 5, son Charles W. age 4, and daughter Hettie A. age 1.  Listed on the 1880 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio is the household of John Shively age 33, wife Hannah age 34, daughter Sarah F. age 15, son Charles W. age 14, daughter Ettie A. age 11, daughter Lucy M. age 9, son Homer C. age 7 and mother-in-law Sarah Smith age 67.  Located on the 1900 Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio census is the household of John Shively born Oct-1837 age 62 married 38 years, wife Hellen born Feb-1846 age 53 married 38 years 7 children born and 7 are living, daughter Lucy born Feb-1871 age 29, daughter Blanche born Oct-1883 age 16 and daughter Lizzie born Oct-1880 age 19. 

It is not known why on the 1880 census the wife of John Shively, Jr. is listed as Hannah and the mother-in-law is listed as Sarah Smith.  From the 1900 census John Shively, Jr. is listed with his wife Ellen (Hellen) Remy which is consistent with the 1870 census record. Also from the 1900 census information John and Ellen Shively are listed as being married 38 years which is consistent with their marriage date of 1862. On the 1900 census Ellen states she has born 7 children with all 7 living. From the census records the 7 children of John and Ellen Shively were Sarah F., Charles W., Hettie A., Lucy M., Homer C., Lizzie and Blanche. The mother of Ellen Remy was Milberry Redfearn Remy Jolley Roach who died 25-Mar-1893 and is buried in Wyckoff Cemetery in Vinton County, Ohio.

The children of John Shively, Jr. and Ellen Remy were: 1) Sarah Francis who married Edward Andris 2) Charles Willard 3) Ettie Alice who married Horatio Seymour Jordan 4) Lucy May who married Grant Sniff 5) Homer Clayton who married Nellie F.
