This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Dr. J. D. Shively Dies
He Was Loved And Widely Known For Outstanding Service to Mankind
The earthly remains of Dr. J. D. Shively, beloved retired physician and resident of Clinton since 1939, were laid to rest in Englewood Saturday afternoon, Sept. 11th, following services at the Vansant Funeral Home, Elder H. F. Roll, Kansas City, read the Scripture and in the resume of Dr. Shively's life, stated that he was indeed a medical missionary, for every case brought to him for consultation was first taken to God in prayer. He closed his remarks by saying that the principles set forth by Dr. Shively were a challenge to arise, go forward in a closer walk with Christ, and be of service to others.
"Face to Race" and "The City Four Square" were sung by two young men from Kansas City, Messrs. Stewart and Hopkins, with Mrs. Roll at the piano.
The casket bearers were Amos C. White, Charles Hassen, Wm. Astner, L. H. Schulte, Fred Nuss, M. Astner, P. S. Jackson and Dave Fisher.
Dr. Shively's labors are ended and his house was in order when the final summons came at break of dawn Thursday, Sept. 9th, following an operation for an intestinal obstruction.
As well as usual, the retired physician enjoyed a trip to the nation's capital with his wife early in June. Upon their return he had been assisting in repairs, and the papering and painting of the interior of their cozy home, corner Main and Clinton, in happy anticipation of the family reunion which was in progress when he was stricken with his fatal illness.
On Monday, Sept 6, Dr. and Mrs. Shively motored to Warrensburg with their good friends, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dickman, to meet Mrs. Shively's sister, Mrs. Witzke, who came from Washington, D. C.  Dr. Shively did not feel well, but, all hoped it would pass. By Tuesday evening, he became so gravely ill that he was taken to the hospital and the operation was performed Wednesday noon.
His wife, a registered nurse, and well loved in all Henry County, was ever at his side, as she has been down through the years, for their life was one of sweet, reverent companionship. Their interests were one and their home, the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and their life work of healing and doing for the sick have shown forth the ministry of love and service.
Genuine and rare, compounded in God's great mixing bowl of the simplest yet the costliest virtues, were his characteristics, obedience to duty, loyalty, heroism, patience, service, and a marvelous capacity for friendship. In talking with Dr. Shively ten minutes, one recognized a great soul, an outstanding personality, and a man of God.
As a superintendent of a number of church hospitals, and for 19 years head of his own private hospital in Iowa, Dr. Shively exemplified the teachings of his Master, for he was at all times kind. Those sick in body and mind found understanding and the sympathy which only a sincere physician knows how to share and when to give, in conjunction with his knowledge and skill.
Dr. Shively served humanity well, and to his church, he was ever a leader and pillar. As an elder of the local church, in reviewing the Sabbath School lesson or cleansing the sanctuary, he made this remark the Saturday before his death, "You know, I do not like to wait until the close of day to make everything right with God; I like to lift my heart in prayer, asking Him to forgive me at various times during the day".
Not everyone can be a Dr. Shively, but all can put more of kindness and affection into life, more thought of others and less of self--see the good in a neighbor a little quicker, and by so living, meet the challenge bravely, following his example.
J. Dow Shively was born Sept. 12, 1869, Clark County, Iowa. He attended school in Battle Creek, Mich., and received his B. S. degree in 1894, and his M. D. degree in 1900, at the University in Ann Arbor, Mich. Entering private practice, his ministry of service was so outstanding that he was chosen superintendent of the church hospital in Iowa and later he accepted the superintendency of Boulder Sanitarium, Boulder, Colo.  Prior to opening his own hospital at Osceola, Iowa, he served as head of the Nebraska Sanitarium, Lincoln, Neb.
Upon completion of 19 years with the Osceola hospital, the doctor retired from active practice and with his wife came to Clinton where they purchased property and have since made their home.
September 3rd, 1928, Mr. Shively and Miss Alfreda Hardt were married at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hardt, Bodine Ave., Clinton.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Edith Halverson, California; Mrs. Wm. E. Nelson, Washington, D. C. and a brother, John Shively, Osceola, Iowa.
Among those here for the services were: Mr. and Mrs. John E. Shively, Chariton, Iowa; Mrs. E. C. Witzke and son, Henry, Washington, D.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hardt, Clovis, N.M.; Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Hardt, Big Bend, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Pinkston, Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. J.
