This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

John William Shively And Clara Keinle In Cabell County, West Virginia And Boyd County, Kentucky

John William Shively Death Certificate

 John William Shively was born on 13-Jan-1863 in Vinton County, OH and died on 4-Jan-1927 in Huntington, Cabell County, WV.  He was the son of Jacob Shively was born on 4-Dec-1831 in Germany and died 1-Oct-1903 in Logan, Hocking County, OH and Monacka "Mary" Frey (Fry) who was born Apr-1841 in Germany.  For additional information on Jacob and Mary Shively see the Shively blog article written on 25-Oct-2014.  John William Shively was married to Clara Keinle in Apr-1885 in Hocking County, OH.  She was born on the 7-May-1860 in Hocking County, OH and died on 23-Apr-1925 in Cuyahoga County, OH.  She was the daughter of Joseph Keinle and Victorial Till.

The following was copied from The Weekly Register, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Wednesday, April 29, 1885, Page 3, Column 3:
Mr. John W. Shively and Miss Clara Keinla were united in marriage at the home of the latter in Logan, Ohio, last Wednesday.  The happy couple arrived here Thursday afternoon, and are quartered at the Stortz House. John has many warms friends here and all join in wishing him and his fair bride a pleasant journey through life.

Listed on the 1880 Logan, Hocking County, OH census is the family of Jacob Shively age 49, wife Mary age 39, son Jacob Jr. age 19, son John age 17, son George age 15, son Charles L. age 13, son William W. age 10, daughter Catharine age 6, son Augustus age 4, son Ferdinand age 2 and mother Catharine Gray age 68. Listed on the 1900 Guyandotte District, Huntington City, Cabell County, WV census are John Shively born Jan-1862 age 38, wife Clara born May-1861 age 39, son Joseph C. born Jan-1886 age 12, daughter Irene V. born Dec-1867 age 12, daughter Millie H. born Jan-1890 age 10 and daughter Lucille M. born Dec-1895 age 4. On the 1910 Catlettsburg City, Boyd County, Ky census are John Shively age 47 a proprietor of hotel, wife Clara age 47, son Joseph age 24, daughter Nellie age 20, daughter Lucile age 14, daughter Irene Beech age 22 divorced, and grandson John J. Beech age 2. On the 1920 Catlettsburg, Boyd County census is the family of John Shively age 54, wife Clarah age 54, daughter Loucille age 23, servant Nellie Clark age 55 and servant Lucy Ore age 44.

The following was located in the Columbus Dispatch, Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday, January 5, 1927, Page 6, Columns 5-6:
SHIVELY – John, aged 64, former resident of Columbus. The remains of Mr. Shively, who died at the home of his son, Joseph Shively, in Huntington, W. Va., Tuesday night, will be received in Columbus in charge of the Egan Undertaking company, 30 West Naghton street, Thursday night, and will be taken to their funeral home. Funeral services will be held there Friday,  at 9 a.m., after which interment will be made in St. Joseph’s cemetery, besides the grave of his wife. Mr. Shively had been making his home with his son, Joseph. Other surviving relatives include three daughters, Mrs. W. J. Schoenfeldt of Canton, Ohio; Mrs. Neil Gainer of 731 Franklin avenue and Mrs. Victor Williamson, also of the Franklin avenue address.

Hotel Operator Dies
CATLETTSBURG, KY:  John Shively, 60, died at his home here after a lingering illness. He operated the Shively Hotel here for many years.

The following newspaper obituary was copied from the Columbus Dispatch, Columbus, Ohio, Thursday, April 23, 1925, Page 21, Columns 2-3:
SHIVELY -- Mrs. Clara, age 64, wife of John Shively of 57 South Monroe avenue, died in the Clinic hospital, Cleveland, Wednesday night.  She submitted to an operation there, last Tuesday, for goiter.  Mrs. Shively leaves besides her husband three daughters, Mrs. Irene Schoenfelt of Canton, Mrs. Nelle Gainer and Miss Lucille Shively of Columbus; four sisters Mrs. Kate Brown of Logan and Mrs. Jospeh Engler, Mrs. Edward Rand( ) and Mrs. John Smetz of Columbus and six brothers (   ) of Logan and Charles, Sam and Leo, Louis and John Kienle of Columbus. The body was brought to Columbus, Thursday and removed to the home.
