This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Sabina "Bina" Anna Shively was born on 17-Dec-1862 in Iowa and died on 18-Oct-1961.  She was the daughter of Michael Shively (born Aug-1826 in Germany died 15-Dec-1921 in Napa County, CA) and Sarah Thornburgh (born 24-Jun-1830 in Wayne County, IN died 18-Jun-1926 in Napa County, CA). A brother of Bina Shively who was John Henry Shively was the subject of the Shively blog article written on Sunday March 14, 2021.  Bina Shively married William Robert Gillespie who was a physician on 28-Jul-1887 in Nevada County, MO. William Robert Gillespie was born on 11-Mar-1858 and died on 23-May-1945 in Cook County, IL. He was the son of Robert Bruce Gillespie and Laura Gould. 

Located on the 1880 Deerfield Township, Vernon County, MO is the household of Michael Shively age 54, wife Sarah age 50, daughter Hattie age 20, daughter Bina age 17, son Lincoln age 16 and son Clyde age 8. On the 1900 Cleveland City, Cleveland Township, Cuyahoga County, OH is the family of Wm. R. Gillespie born Mar-1859 age 41 occupation physician, wife Bina A. born Dec-1864 age 35 and daughter Juanita born Jul-1889 age 10. On the 1910 Borough of Manhattan, New York County, New York are William R. Gillespie age 51, wife Bina age 47 and son Durwin age 5. Located on the 1920 Chicago City, Cook County, IL census is the household of Juanita Adams age 30, daughter Josephine age 9, daughter Jeslyn age 7, mother Bina Gillespie age 56, brother Durwin Gillespie age 15, lodger Raymond Hopkins age 33 and boarder Ida Trouts age 51. On the 1930 Santa Paula City, Santa Paula Township, Ventura County, CA census is Alonzo L. Shively age 65, wife Tillie B. age 55 and sister Bina A. Gillespie age 67. On the 1940 Santa Paula City, Santa Paula Township, Ventura County, CA census are TIllie B. Shively age 66 widowed and Bina Gillespie age 60.  William Robert Gillespie is listed on the 1940 North RIverside, Cook County, IL census in the Scottish Old Peoples Home as William R. Gillespie age 82.

The following newspaper obituary was found in the Ventura County Star-Free Press, Ventura, California, Thursday, October 19, 1961, page 24, Column 2:
Bina Gillespie
Mrs. Bina A. Gillespie, long-time resident of Santa Paula, died yesterday at her home, 145 N. Eighth St., after a lingering illness.
She was born Dec. 17, 1862 and had lived in the county for 34 years.
Surviving are a son, Durwin Gillespie of Washington, D. C.; brother, A. L. Shively of Santa Paula; nephews, Douglas Shively of Santa Paula, and R. L. Shively, a former Santa Paula resident; a niece, Mrs. Ida S. Ryan of Santa Paula, and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Gillespie was a member of the Santa Paula Presbyterian Church.  She lived for many years with Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Shively, and later with Miss Elizabeth Anderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow in the chapel of the H. B. Skillin Funeral Home in Santa Paula. The Rev. R. T. Bousman will officiate.
Private cremation will follow in Ivy Lawn, and inurnment will be in the Forest Lawn Collumbarium beside her late husband, Dr. William R. Gillespie.

Located on the 1860 Goshen Township, Muscatine County, IA is the family of Asa Petty age 45, wife Susanna age 38, son Josiah age 20, daughter Rosilla age 12, daughter Elizabeth age 10, daughter Harriet J. age 7, daughter Mary B. age 5, son Chester age 1 and farm laborer Jacob Smith age 35.

Shively age 30, wife Elizabeth age 28, son Hubbel age 11, son Cassius age 9 and daughter Zoe age 7.  The family is still in Dallas County, IA on the 1900 Spring Valley, Perry City, Dallas County, IA are J. H. Shively born Oct-1848 age 51 dealer of Walnut lumber, wife Elizabeth born Mar-1850 age 50 married 31 years and having given birth to 3 children with 3 children living, daughter Zoe French born Sep-1873 age 27 married 2 years and son-in-law Frank French born May-1872 age 28. On the 1910 Spring Valley Township, Perry, Dallas County, IA are John H. Shively age 61 manager Logging, wife Elizabeth age 60. This week John Colvin began the work of delivery on a contract for one hundred thousand feet of logs, native timber, purchased from the Redfield estate by J H Shively of Perry.  The logs are to be shipped to the Des Moines mill in which Mr. Shively in interested. There will be twenty-five to fifty car loads. Mr. Colvin thinking that the total number of feet will nearly or quite double the figures given above.--Redfield Clipper.

The following was found in The Chief-Reporter, Perry, Iowa, Thursday, May 4, 1899, Page 4, Column 4:
John Shively will move his walnut log saw mill in Des Moines from its present location to ground adjoining White Chapel. When the sirens of that district get to making the night bideons singing "Down on the Wabash: or "Saw My Leg Off". John says he will take them at their word and run a few of them through.

Charles Henry Shively And Nettie Davis In Cape Girardeau County, Missouri

Charles Henry Shively was born on 26-Nov-1872 in New Castle, Henry County, IN and died on 2-Oct-1962 in Las Vegas, Clark County, NV. He was the son of Peter Shively (1834-1893) and Susannah Shields (1836-1909).  Peter Shively was the son of Michael Shively (1807-1900) and Keziah Laboyteaux (1813-1860).  For additional information related to these families see the Shively blog articles written on Friday February 28, 2014 and Friday June 12, 2015. Charles Henry Shively married Nettie Davis in Oklahoma County, OK in Jun-1908. Nettie Davis was the daughter of Edwin R. Davis and Sarah Ellen King.  Charles Henry Shively was proprietor of a variety store called the Square Deal in Cape Girardeau, Cape Girardeau County, MO from the 1920s through the 1940.  Per information in 1945 Norval A. Randol bought the Square Deal Variety Store and building on Broadway from Charles H. Shively who had operated it for 29 years.

Shively age 37 a traveling salesman, wife Bertha age 23 and son Gerald Davis age 1. On the 1920 Cape Girardeau City, Cape Girardeau County, MO census is the family of Charles H. Shively age 48 a retail merchant in a variety store, wife Nettie D. age 33 a sales woman in a variety store, son Gerald D. age 10 and son Gwen E. age 8. Listed on the 1930 Cape Girardeau City, Cape Girardeau County, MO census is the household of Charles H.
