This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Henry Charles Shively And Fidella Wilkerson - An African American Genealogy

Henry Charles Shively was born in March 1864. He married Fidella Wilkerson ca. 1885. Fidella was born 23-May-1870 in Casey County, KY and died on 10-Apr-1945 in Big Creek, Hartwell, McDowell County, WV. She was the daughter of Edward Wilkerson and Mary Ellen Crawford.

Henry Charles Shively was the son of Charles Shively (born Mar-1834 in Taylor County, KY and died on 22-Mar-1917 in Taylor County, KY) and Millie Wilson (born 1-Mar-1863 in Taylor County, KY and died on 3-Jan-1936 in Taylor County, KY. From the KY death certificate the father of Charles Shively was Harvey Nutan (possibly Newton). From the KY death certificate the parents of Millie Wilson were Jonathan Wilson and Sallie Jones.  

From the written records it is believed the history of Henry Charles Shively is found on the 1850 Division 1, Taylor County, KY Slave Schedule in the list for John B. Shively.  On the 1860 Division 1, Taylor County, KY Slave Schedule following the name of Jno. B. Shively are the following black males age 22, age 12, age 2 and age 4 months with the following black females age 18, age 17, age 15, age 10, age 5 and age 3 months. The following information was found in the settlement of the estate of John B. Shively in Taylor County, KY, Book 3, Pages 284-288 which gives names to some of those listed on the 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedules.  Note that Charles and Milly are two of the names listed. This list was compiled on 13-Feb-1865:

            On the 1870 Mansville District, Taylor County census is a family identified as being black: Charles H Shively age 35, wife Millie A age 31, daughter Sarah E. age 16, son William age 14, daughter Mary age 8, son Charles H age 7, daughter Amanda age 5, daughter Lucinda age 4, daughter Cresa E. age 2 and daughter Caroline age 2 months. Listed on the 1880 Mansville District, Taylor County, KY census is the family of Charlie Shively age 45, Millie age 40, Sahra age 24, John age 20, Manda age 18, Loucinda age 16, Tresy E age 14, Caroline age 12, Lisy Jane age 10, Charles H age 17, Samuell age 6 and Josiah age 4. Charles and Milly Shively remain in Taylor County, KY for future census records. By 1900 their son Charles Henry Shively (born 1864) has moved to Knox County, KY.

From the census records Charles Henry Shively was a coal miner. Located on the 1900 Bertha, Knox County, KY census is the family of Henry Shively born Mar-1864 age 36, wife Fidelia born May-1870 age 30, married 15 years having born 6 children with all 6 living, daughter Bettie born Mar-1886 age 14, daughter Mary L. born Jul-1891 age 9, daughter Nora B. born Sep-1893 age 6, daughter Evie born Aug-1895 age 4, son Willie born Sep-1897 age 2, and son John born Apr-1899 age 1 month.  On the 1910 Wilton Precinct, Knox County, KY census are Henry C. Shively age 47, wife Fidela age 40 married 25 years having 10 children with 10 living, daughter Mary L. age18, daughter Nola age 16, daughter Eva age 14, son Willie age 12, son John E. age 11, daughter Bertha age 9, son Charles age 4, son George H. age 4, son Noah age11 months and boarder Robert Tye age 21. On the 1920 Lynch Precinct, Harlan County, KY census are Henry Shively are 54, wife Fidella age 48, daughter Letha age 19, son Charles age 17, son George H. age 14, son Robert age 10, daughter Viola age 8 and grandson Clarence Hale age 16. On the 1930 Big Creek Magisterial District, Hartwell, McDowell County, WV census is Henry Shively age 62, wife Della age 58, son George  and grandson Richard Reed age 8. On the 1940 Magisterial District 3, Lynch, Harlan County, KY is the household of George Shively are 33, father Henry age 76 and mother Fidella age 70.  By 1950 Charles Henry Shively is living with his daughter on the Wyoming, Hamilton County, OH list of Leon Phillips age 54, wife Letha age 49 and father in law Henry Shively age 86.

Newspapers were scanned for information on the children of Henry Charles and Fidella Shively and following are a few of the articles. Located in the Lexington Herald-Leader, Lexington, Kentucky, Saturday, April 21, 1990, Page 10 :  Eva Reed, 94, died Wed., April 18, 1900. She was born in Knox Co., KY, daughter of Henry Shively and Fidela Shively. Survivors are a son, Albert (Elayne) Reed; a grandson, Don (Mel) Reed; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola McDaniel, Akron, OH; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Wallace. Services are 1:30 p.m. today at Cunningham Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas C. Wallace officiating. Burial is in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

Located in The Akron Beacon Journal, Akron, Ohio, Thursday, February 14, 1991, Page 16, Column 2:  Viola D. McDaniel (Wallace), 79, of 1044 Roslyn Ave., passed away Feb. 10, 1991 at St. Thomas Hospital, after a long illness.
Born in Lynch, Ky., she had lived in this community 46 years. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and the Minister of Music.
She is survived by son, William J. (Yasuko) Wallace Jr. of Akron; daughter, Juanita (John) Jackson of Virginia; eight stepchildren; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service Saturday, 2 p.m., at the Stewart & Calhoun Chapel, Rev. Dr. L. C. Cooper officiating. Interment at Mount Peace Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday, 1 p.m. until time of service. Procession will form, and condolences by be sent to 158 Cole Ave.

SHIVELY, Robert Conly, beloved husband of Irene Shively, devoted father of Yvonne Rogers Lanier of Washington, D.C., loving brother of Eva Shively Reed of Lexington, Ky. and Viola Shively Wallace McDaniels of Akron, Oho, uncle of Juanita Wallace Jackson of Albany, N.Y. and other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Friends may call at Zion Baptist Church, 630 Glenwood, Friday from 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. followed by funeral service at 7:30, Rev. L. V. Booth officiating. Interment Saturday 10 A.M. at Beech Grove Cemetery. Renfro Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
