This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. Elizabeth McVenor Claudy, 1st wife Of David P. Shively, Who Lived In Noble, Belmont And Franklin Counties, Ohio

The subject of the blog article for August 18, 2018 was David P. Shively. Information has been found for this blog article relating to his 1st wife, Elizabeth McVenor Claudy, daughter of Robert C. Claudy and Hanna M. (Thacker or Hatcher).  Elizabeth was born 1-Feb-1833 in Barnesville, Belmont County, OH and died 10-Aug-1923 in Franklin County, OH.  David and Elizabeth must have gotten a divorce because he remarried a second time.  The children from the marriage of David and Elizabeth seemed to have stayed to be raised by her. 

Listed on the 1850 Somerset Township, Belmont County, OH census are David P. Shively age 24 and wife Elizabeth age 17.  Located on the 1860 Somerset Township, Belmont County, OH census is the family of David Shively age 32, wife Elizabeth age 26, daughter Almira age 10, daughter Annie age 8, son John age 6, son Jerome age 4 and son Lemmie age 1. Found on the 1870 Town of Somerton, Somerset Township, Belmont County, OH is the household of Elizabeth Shiveley age 35, daughter Allie age 20, daughter Laura age 18, son Jerome age 13 and son Lemmie age 11.  Listed on the 1880 Somerton, Somerset Township, Belmont County, OH census are Elisabeth Shively age 48, daughter A. Laura age 27, son J. William age 23 and son T. Lemuel age 21.  On the 1910 Caldwell, Noble County, OH census is the household of Jerome Shively age 50, wife Willie A. age 42, son John C. age 21, son Richard M. age 17, son Robert C. age 12, daughter Mary E. age 9, daughter Emma L. age 7, daughter Laura V. age 3, mother Elizabeth M. age 77 and servant Carrie Hare age 18.

Mrs. Elizabeth McVenor Shively, aged 90, widow of David Shively, was found dead in bed Friday morning at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. W. A. Shively, 380 West Eighth avenue.   A son, Lemuel Shively, of Batesville, also survives. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at the home of the daughter-in-law. The body will be taken to Batesville by the Schoedinger company for burial.

David P. Shively And 1st Wife Elizabeth And 2nd Wife Mary Jane Who Lived In Cumberland County, Pennsylvania

David P. Shively was born ca. 1825 and died 9-Mar-1891 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA. He was married 1st to Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).  David was married second to Mary Jane (maiden name unknown). Mary Jane was born ca. 1837 and died ca. 1900. He was mustered into the Civil War at Harrisburg, PA on 20-Apr-1861 with Co. D., 2nd PA Infantry and honorably discharged on 20-Jul-1861. He again enlisted at Chambersburg, PA on 13-Sep-1862 and mustered into service at Harrisburg, PA 22-Sep-1862 in 16th PA Cavalry.

Listed on the 1850 Somersett Township, Belmont County, PA census is David P. Shively age 24 and wife Elizabeth age 17.  Located on the 1870 West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, PA census is the household of Jacob W. Hair age 55, wife Margaret age 50, son Oliver age 20, daughter Agnes age 16, and David P. Shivley age 44. On the 1880 3rd Ward Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA census is David P. Shiveley age 55, wife Mary J. age 43, daughter Alice M. age 4 and son Wilbur B age 3 months.

David P. Shively and 2nd wife Mary J. had at least 3 children:  1) Henry Raymond Shively was born 19-Jul-1872 and died 29-Sep-1877 in Cumberland County, PA 2) Alice M. Shively was born Aug-1876 and died 12-Mar-1909 married 1st to Jacob Lemuel Hair and married 2nd to George P. Roush 3) Wilbur B. Shively born Feb-1879.

Mr. David P. Shively.
Mr. David P. Shively, aged 65 years, died very suddenly last evening at 6:30 at his residence on North Pitt street. He had been walking around the house about an hour before his death and not feeling very well sent for Dr. Longsdorf. The doctor had been in the room but a few minutes when Mr. Shively fell from a bench upon which he was sitting and was dead in a moment. Heart disease was the cause of his death.
Mr. Shively has lived here for several years. He was a tailor by occupation and work, though not constantly. He served in the army during the war and was a private in Co. E., 16th Reg't, Pa. cavalry. He was a member of Post 201 G.A.R., also. A wife and two children survive him. The funeral will take place on Thursday at one o'clock p.m.  Interment at the old graveyard.

Nilas Oran Shively And 1st Wife Mary Edith Kennedy And 2nd Wife Bessie Irene Schar From Indiana To Illinois To Arizona

Nilas Oran Shively was born 5-Oct-1885 in Plymouth, Marshall County, IN and died 22-Dec-1952 in Maricopa County, AZ. He was the son of Emanuel Shively and Rose Morlock. Nilas was married 1st on 24-Nov-1909 in Miami County, IN to Mary Edith Kennedy (born 20-Jul-1890 in Mexico, Miami County, IN and died 26-Jun-1974 in North Manchester, Wabash County, IN). She was the daughter of Oscar Kennedy and Serepta Brower. Nilas Shively married 2nd to Bessie Irene Schar Tingle. She was the daughter of Lawrence Schar and Susie Dorr.

Listed on the 1900 Bourbon Township, Marshall County, IN census is the family of Emanuel Shively born Dec-1851 age 48, wife Rosa born Mar-1864 age 36, daughter Pearle M. born Jun-1884 age 15, son Nilas O.  born Oc-1885 age 14, daughter Alena E. born Aug-1887 age 12, daughter Nora M. born Sep-1889 age 10, daughter Ione H. born Aug-1893 age 6 and son Walter P. born Nov-1897 age 2.  Located on the 1910 Bloomington Township, McLean County, IL census is Nilas O. Shively age 24 a teacher at University and wife Mary E. age 19. Located on the 1930 Lincoln Park West, Webster Hotel, 2150 N. Lincoln Park West, Ward 44, Block 134, City of Chicago, Cook County, IL is Niles Shiverr, age 45 a real estate broker.  Listed on the 1930 Village of River Forest, Cook County, IL is Wyatt B. Tingle age 42 in real estate employed by N. O. Shively, wife Bessie I. age 38 in real estate employed by N. O. Shively, son Wyatt, Jr. age 14 and daughter Patricia age 9.

Nilas Oran Shively was teaching at a University in IL in 1910.  Newspaper articles indicate that in 1911 he was in Oakland, CA where he was teaching a "commercial course". In the 1920's he established a real estate business in Chicago, IL.  From the Chicago Tribune, Chicago, IL, Sunday, December 5, 1926, Page 43, Column 2 is the following article:
Plan 100 Homes On Land North Of Villa Park
N. O. Shively & Co. report having closed a contract for the erection of 100 homes in their additions north of Villa Park, at North avenue and Addison road. Every building will be of different design and of face brick. Work is to start not later than March, 1917.

Project To Have Trio Small Parks
N. O. Shively & Co. announce that their "Madison Street Gardens", at the intersection of Madison street and Ardmore avenue, in Villa Park, will follow the idea outlined by John R. Robertson & Co. in their Madison Street-Ardmore subdivision, adjoining the Shively tract on the east, and lay out a generous portion of the land in small parks.
There'll be three of these breathing spaces; named Morningside park, Evergreen park and Sunset Park. The largest will be approximately 575x120 feet. Evergreen park will be 500x128, while Sunset park, the smallest of the trio, will be 400x128.
In laying out the three small parks a certain portion will be allotted fro a baseball ground, a portion for a playground, and the balance will be planted with trees, shrubbery and flowers.
According to Shively&Co., improvements on the property will start immediately in order to ready for building by next September.
The Madison Street Gardens extend south to Jackson street and west to Harvard avenue. Yale avenue will extend from north to south in a sweeping curve across the subdivision.
