This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Shively Family In Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 In New Orleans

Lafayette Cemetery No. 1

In the November 2010 issue of the Shively Newsletter information was requested on who might be buried in New Orleans, Louisiana in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1.  This cemetery is located in the historic Garden District. It is among the city’s earliest and most significant aboveground burial sites.  Once part of the Livaudais Plantation, Lafayette No. 1 was designated a city burial site in 1833.
At the head of this grave was probably a marker listing the names of the persons buried here.  At the time of visit this marker was missing.  Research on the surname Shively in New Orleans has given some clues as to who might be in this cemetery.   From the census records and information extracted from the New Orleans newspapers it is known that there were Shively’s who did live in the Garden District in the area of this cemetery.
The one confirmed Shively entombment here was recorded in the following obituary. Mention of Mrs. Bland Huddleston, mother of William C. Shively, is referenced.  This William C. Shively is the  grandson of William and Mary Shively and son of William Cushing Shively and Bland Huddleston:
The Times-Picayune, Friday, September 30, 1932, Page 2, Column 8:
SHIVELY—At Chicago, Ill., on Tuesday September 27, 1932, Mrs. Bland Huddleston Shively, mother of William C. Shively.
Remains will arrive in New Orleans on Friday evening. September 30, 1932 at 7:50 o’clock via I. C. Railroad.  Funeral services will be held from the funeral home of Pat J. McMahon-Coburn Co., 2305 Canal, corner N. Mire, on Saturday morning, October 1, 1932, at 11 o’clock.
Interment in Lafayette cemetery No. 1.

For Shively researchers interested in this Shively line additional research was done. Located in the marriage records for Louisiana was found the marriage of William Shirley to Mary Haley on 3-Dec-1867 in Orleans Parish.  On the 1870 Orleans Parish, 11 Ward of New Orleans was found the family of William Shively age 27 born in Indiana, wife Mary H. age 28 born in Liverpool and daughter Indiana age 1yr 2 months born in Louisiana.
On the next census record in 1880 the family of William and Mary Shively has grown and listed in Orleans Parish, 200 Annunciation Street, New Orleans is William Shively age 38 born Indiana, wife Mary born in England, daughter Indiana age 11, son William age 8 and daughter Mary age 6.
The children of William and Mary Shively married as follows:  Mary Louisa Shively married Roderick S. Huddleston on 1-Aug-1894, William C Shively married Bland R. Huddleston on 28-Jan-1897 in New Orleans,  Indiana Myrtilla Shively married William Frederick Weishaupt on 25-Mar-1908.
On the 1900 Orleans Parish, 1427 Harmony Street, New Orleans is listed the son of William and Mary Shively.  The son William C. Shively age 28 born Oct 1871 in Louisiana is listed with wife Bland R age 28 born Dec 1871 in Mississippi and son WIlliam C., Jr age 2 born 1897 in Louisiana.    By 1900 the daughter of William and Mary Shively, Mary Louisa, has moved and is living in Chicago, IL with her husband Roderick Huddleston and children Roderick age 4 and Mae age 2.
Other record sources were searched to give additional information on these Shively families.  A death certificate was found for William Henry Shively.  He died  in New Orleans on 27-Oct-1930 at the age of 87 years 3 months.  The certificate states the deceased was the widower of Mary Holey, and the son of Ulric Shively and Polly Johnson, both natives of Indiana.
From this information we then know the parents of William Henry Shively were Ulery Shively born 1819 Montgomery Co. OH died 1858 Madison Co, IN and Mary Jane “Polly” Johnson who were married 9-April-1838 in Rush Co., IN.  William would have been the grandson of Jacob C Shively and Mary Siler.  William’s grandparents were Isaac David Shively (1759-1823) and Elizabeth Bossler (1764-1800).  Finally, William would have been the great-grandson of Ulrich Schaublin (1721-1776) and Elizabeth Thommen (1722-1777).

My First Shively Family Genealogy Blog

Family Of Henry Rice Shively

The Shively families have been fortunate to have researchers who have preserved their work for future generations.  A few of those published genealogy records include:  Schaublin (Shively) Families from the District of Waldenburg, Baselland, Swizerland by George W. Andrews, 1978;  The Family of Jacob Schaublin and Maria Martin, Waldenburg, Switzerland, 1650 and Their Shively, Shiveley, Shivley Descendants, A History Compiled By Our Families and Friends, Editor A. Shivley Freed; Descendants of Christian Shively Of Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co. and Later York Twp., York Co., Penna.,  Arthur G. Black, 1941;  Descendants of Henry and Mary Banta Shively by Lottie Compton McDowell, 1972 and Henry Shively and John Wesley Shively, Sons Of Jacob B. and Anna Mavity Shively of Duois County, Indiana by Margaret Shively Smith and Helen Shively Satzler, 1980.
From these family histories I have learned that the Shively families did not let fear of the unknown stop them from bettering themselves.  We have documentation of the families leaving Europe and arriving in America as early as 1738 and 1749.   It is known that Shively's were in Kentucky between 1780 and 1790 when it was still a wilderness.
There are still many of the Shively historians who are independently doing research and documenting their work.  With the advances in technology and our ability to share information it has been my desire to create a Shively Family Genealogy blog for the purpose of sharing.  It is desired that this blog be used by anyone interested in researching the Shively surname.    The more we share information the more that can be accomplished.  If you are searching for a Shively ancestor or have information on a line that you want to share please contact me.   I am including links to web sites that have been helpful to my past research.
I am indebted to cousin F. J. Luke for the picture of the family of Henry Rice Shively.  In the picture clockwise starting at the top are:  Wesley Barton Shively, Herschel Thomas Shively, Shelby Owen Shively, Vincil Elbert Shively, and Mary Rose Shively.  Herschel Thomas Shively was my grandfather. He and the brothers and sister are now deceased.  I continue my Shively research for him, the memories he has left, and our future generations.
