This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

The Most Remarkable Couple In Hardin County — Parties And Personals
Melrose, Jan. 7th — Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. Shively celebrated their fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day a few days ago. We doubt very much if there is a couple their age in the county so hale and hearty. Mr. Shively is in his 76th year and gets about like a sixteen year old boy. He walked to White Mills and back a few mornings ago, a distance of 14 miles. He was back by noon as fresh as a school boy, thinking on account of bad weather he could walk better than ride.

The newspaper obituary for Louise Jane Johnsey Shively was found in The News Enterprise, Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Friday, January 14, 1927, Page 5, Column 1:

Shively Home Destroyed - Three Members of Family Killed, Two in Critical Condition And Another Less Seriously Hurt
At 11:15 last Friday night the ringing of the fire bell aroused the people of Geneva. Word had come that the John H. Shively family, residing on the Mrs. Jane Turner farm three-fourths of a mile due west of the Geneva courthouse, had been killed or injured and their home destroyed in a cyclone.  Many citizens hurried out in every available conveyance and gave every assistance possible.  John Shively and his wife were found badly injured and in a critical condition.  Their nine-year-old daughter Irene was dead and their only other child, five-year-old Ralph, was dying from his injuries.  Miss Lulu Schmidt, employed in the home, was dead.  Ed Fussell, employed on the farm, was seriously injured.
Mr. and Mrs. Shively and Ralph were brought to Geneva to the home of Mrs. Shively’s brother, Orlie Merrill.  Ralph died there Saturday night.  The remains of Miss Schmidt were brought to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Schmidt Sr. of Geneva.  The body of Irene Shively was taken to Nicholas’ undertaking rooms.  Mr. Fussell was brought to the home of O.A. Beals in Geneva.  The funeral of Miss Schmidt took place at 10 a.m. Monday from the Catholic church and her body was interred in the Catholic cemetery.  The funeral of the two Shively children took place at 3 p.m. Monday from the Methodist church and their bodies were laid to rest in the Geneva cemetery.
Geneva people noticed the gathering of ominous storm clouds in the southwest last Friday evening and some sought safety in caves and cellars, but the storm remained too far away to bring serious apprehension to many Geneva people.  Probably no one in Geneva, unless on the west side, heard the roaring storm when it was crushing the buildings on the Turner farm and destroying the Shively family in its progress northward.  Henry Muhlenburg and family live a quarter of a mile west of where Shively’s lived.  About 9 or a little after they sought shelter in a cave.  After the cyclone passed they came out to see what damage had been wrought.  The flashes of lightning did not reveal any buildings where the Shivelys had lived and Mr. Muhlenburg and Irvie Zink, who was employed at Muhlenberg’s, took a lantern and went over to Shively’s to see if anything had gone wrong.  They found everything on the place destroyed and the members of the family probably dead or dying.  Irvie Zink came on to town for help, leaving Mr. Muhlenburg to give what succor he could.
The storm struck about 9:30 as nearly as the time can be calculated.  It was accompanied by a cloudburst that rendered walking well nigh impossible.  The road was strewn with telephone poles and wires and all sorts of wreckage.  One man had the forethought to put a pair of nippers in his buggy and he said he cut twelve telephone wires on his way out.  The water was so high around the Shively place that those not killed by the storm were in danger of drowning since everybody who had been in the house was too much injured to keep out of the water.
The Shivelys had seen the early approach of the storm and had gone into their cave once.  They thought the danger over and returned to the house.  Some members of the family undressed and went to bed.  When the cyclone actually came it found them unprepared.
(The story continues but for sake of space this tells their involvement with the cyclone. Rose Hulse also sent a second article on the storm from the Nebraska Signal, Friday June 19, 1908.  This article is entitled “Work of Storm – General Review of the Course of the June 5 Cyclonic Wind”.)
John and Alla did have one more child, Welcome Shively, who was born ca. 1911.  Welcome married Maurice McAvoy.

Fannie J. Loyd (Lloyd) Who Lived In Jackson and Marshall County, Alabama And Hamilton County, Tennessee

Fannie Loyd Hodges Death Certificate
The following request for information was received: “Looking for info on a Frank Shively who married Fannie Lloyd around 1890. My grandmother was Flossie Annie Lee Shively. When my grandmother was very small, Frank left never to return. We always thought he was from Michigan. Don’t understand why he would have been in Alabama in 1890”.

Fannie J. Loyd (Lloyd) was born on 27-Jul-1877 in Jackson County, AL and died on 14-Nov-1957 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN. She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Lloyd  (born 1838) and Amanda “Mandy” Swafford (1839-1922). A marriage license for H. F. Shirey (Shivey) to marry A. J. Loyd was issued in Marshall County, AL on 10-Dec-1890. Fannie married 2nd to Hugh H. Hodges on 26-Aug-1902 in Marshall County, AL.

On the 1900 Wrights Precinct No. 23, Marshall County, AL census is the household of Andrew J. Loyd born Jan-1838 age 62, wife Manda B. born 1842 age 57, daughter Dora born Apr-1883 age 17, daughter Fannie J. Shively born Aug-1875 age 24 divorced and grand daughter Flossie A. born 1891 age 8.  From this information Fannie would have been about 16 years old when Flossie was born.

The following newspaper obituary for Fannie J. Loyd Shively Hodges was found in the Chattanooga News Free Press, Saturday, November 16, 1957, Page 2, Column 1:

US Bureau Land Managment Tract Books In Alabama
A search for information on the name H. Frank Shively was limited.  The following might be a possible clues to the identity of Mr. Shively.  From the research of Terry Gosselin: “While doing research for  a Gertrude Shively, I found some interesting info. I believe that Horace Shively died somewhere between 1890 and 1892, probably in Emmet County, MI. There is a Michigan birth christening for a Veroqua Shively in 1890, daughter of Horace and Margaret Shively. By the 1900 census, Veroqua is listed as a stepdaughter of Samuel and Margaret Capp. Samuel’s marriage to Margaret Brill Shively happened in 1892, with her name listed as Shirley in the Ancestry index, but looks like Shively to me.”

Horace Franklin Shively married Margaret Brill in Michigan.  They had 3 children: Bertha Shively born 1879, Gertrude Grace Shively born 1885 and Veroqua E. Shively born 1890.

From the Alabama marriage license H. F. Shirey was authorized to marry Fannie Loyd in December 1890. Veroqua E. Shively was born on 4-Aug-1890 which most likely would mean H F. Shively was in Michigan at the end of 1889. Listed on  the 1880 Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MI census in the household of J. M. Holes age 65 is boarder H. F. Shively age 23 (a locomotive Engineer), wife Eliza age 21 and daughter Bertha age1.

There is an entry in the United States Bureau of Land Management Tract Books in Alabama for Horace F. Shively with date of 1-Nov-1899 which says was cancelled. The entry for Horace F. Shively is located on the lower right quadrant of the page. This was found on the Family Search website. This is the only record that could be found that tied Horace F. Shively to Alabama.

From the 1880 Calhoun County, MI census above, H. F. Shively is listed as a locomotive engineer. Is it possible that Horace F. Shively while working for the railroad disappeared from Michigan and established a new relationship in Alabama?

Dode Shively Fires Fatal Shot Into J. R. Shively -- Quarrel Near Waidsboro Over A Saddle
Rocky Mount, Va. June 28.--Special.
Saturday evening at the farm of J. R. Shiveley, between Waidsboro and Ferrrum, Dode Shiveley shot and killed J. R. Shiveley. The shooting occurred in the dooryard about 8 p.m. The injured man lived until about 3 o'clock Sunday morning.
Dode Shiveley had been working for J. R. Shiveley, and lived in a house hear the farm residence. During the day he had been up in the mountains on business, using a saddle belonging to J. R. Shiveley, who upbraided Dode on his return for scarring and injuring the saddle. They became very and J. R. Shiveley picked up a rock and struck Dode, who then shot him in the lungs.
Dode had a raincoat over his left arm, pulled his pistol with his right, and shot through the coat. The injured man was taken to the house and surgical aid summoned.
The dead man, J. R. Shiveley, was a cousin of the man who shot him, and was a man of peaceable disposition.
Before his death, J. R. Shiveley made a statement completely exonerating Dode of all blame. He said he lost his temper and picked up a rock, and that Dode shot as he advanced.
No arrest has been made. It is expected that the case will be dismissed promptly by the authorities. The widow of J. R. Shiveley, it is said, corroboates her husband's ante-mortem statement.

Another Crank
WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 -- Prof. J. W. Shively, who calls himself the "true Messiah", arrived in this city Thursday and took a room on Sixth street. He at once addressed a letter to Judge Cox, Judge Porter and others connected with the Guiteau trial, to convince them of the fallacy of Guiteau's alleged inspirations. In his letter to Judge Cox he demanded to be put upon the stand to confront Guiteau and tell the court where and how to find this awful deity of the Republican party. The police were notified and this morning arrested him. He will be sent to the insane asylum.
Special Dispatch to the Kansas City Journal
SARATOGA, N.Y., Dec. 5 --Prof. J. W. Shively, of Saratoga, the "great Messiah" crank, arrested at Washington, D.C., today, is believed to be Johnathan W. Shively, of 136 Beckman street, this place. He is down in the directory as a photographer, but his wife says he is an oil painter. While the family make a permanent residence, he travels from place to place in pursuit of his profession. Mrs. Shively says he left home in September, and the last she heard from him he was west, and she expected a letter from him from Chicago or Cincinnati. She adds that a number of years ago he suffered severely from neuralgia, and at times when excited would conduct himself in a peculiar manner. These periods would cover two or three days, after which he would become perfectly rational. About a month ago, in Cleveland, he met with an accident by which his head was injured, and she fears this may have caused temporary aberration of mind. Mrs. Shively did not know her husband intended visiting Washington. He is the son of a clergyman, and was born in Jackson county, Va. Mrs. Shively is a native of Alexandria in that state. She is considerably alarmed about him. The Shiveley family have resided here for upwards of ten years, but within a year or two passed the winters South.

A brother of Johnathan Wright Shively is mentioned in the following newspaper article found in The Fairbury Blade, Fairbury, Illinois, Saturday, December 17, 1881, Page 3, Column 4:
Identified
Last week an item appeared on the fourth page of our paper, to the effect that, "Another 'crank', named Shively, who called himself the 'True Messiah', was arrested in Washington on the 5th. He had addressed a letter to Judge Cox, demanding to be put on the witness stand to confront Guiteau, and to convince the Court and jury of the fallacy of Guiteau's theory of inspiration. He had been a traveling oil painter, and had lived at Saratoga, N.Y., for some years." The item also stated that he would probably be sent to the insane asylum.
This week, Mr. B. W. Shively, of this city, called at our office and stated that, from the description given, he had reason to believe that the man was his only brother. He received a letter from him, dated at Cincinnati, about four weeks ago, in which he said he had been waylaid in city of Cleveland, a short time previous, by highwaymen, who struck him a heavy blow on the head, knocking him senseless; but that he thought he had recovered from the effects of it. Mr. Shively is under the impression that his brother has become deranged from the result of his encounter in Cleveland, and has wandered down to Washington, as stated. He has not heard from him since receiving the letter mentioned above, and expressed his intention of writing to the authorities at the Capitol in regard to the matter. The unfortunate man has a family living at Saratoga, N.Y.

Johnathan W. Shively
SARATOGA, N.Y., June 14. -- [Special.] - Jonathan W. Shively, who died suddenly of heart disease at midnight, attracted no small police attention in Washington on the day Garfield was shot by Guiteau. He mounted a box in front of Willard's Hotel and proclaimed that he was the "true Messiah", and in an incoherent ramble sought to explain why the shooting had taken place. Shively was patriarchal in appearance; was born in West Virginia seventy-five years ago, and had lived here twenty-six years. He was a noted artist and portrait painter, was highly educated, and had traveled extensively. His widow survives him.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Anna D. Shiveley took place this afternoon from the residence of her brother,, Mr. J. Frank Dyson, 1004 Prince street, the Rev. A. W. Rudisill, pastor of Trinity M. E. Church, conducted the services and the interment was in Ivy Hill cemetery. The pallbearers were Dr. W. B. Dent and Messrs. J. Frank Dent, Llewellyn F. Dyson, and C. A couple of notes regarding Charles J. Guiteau.  He was born 8-Sep-1841 in Freeport, IL and died 30-Jun-1882.  He shot President James A. Garfield in 1881 at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C.  Garfield died two months later from infections related to the wound. Guiteau falsely believed he had played a major role in Garfield's election victory, for which he should have been rewarded with a consulship.  He was frustrated and offended by the Garfield administration's rejections.
