This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

                                                    Their 50th Anniversary
The Most Remarkable Couple In Hardin County — Parties And Personals
Melrose, Jan. 7th — Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. Shively celebrated their fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day a few days ago. We doubt very much if there is a couple their age in the county so hale and hearty. Mr. Shively is in his 76th year and gets about like a sixteen year old boy. He walked to White Mills and back a few mornings ago, a distance of 14 miles. He was back by noon as fresh as a school boy, thinking on account of bad weather he could walk better than ride.

The newspaper obituary for Louise Jane Johnsey Shively was found in The News Enterprise, Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Friday, January 14, 1927, Page 5, Column 1:

Mrs. Shively was the widow of J. Q. Shively and since his death fifteen years ago she had made her home in Stephensburg. She formerly lived near Melrose. Mrs. Shively was a lifelong member of the Methodist church.
Surviving her are five daughters, Mrs. Mollie Logsdon, of Calhoun; Mrs. Mattie Payne, of Livermore; Mrs. Will Beams, of Sonora; Mrs. J. H. Payne, of Melrose, and Mrs. Skees.
Funeral services will be held at ten o’clock this morning at the Stephensburg Methodist church by Rev. E. L. Hilburn and Rev. Robert Johnson. Burial will follow in the White Mills cemetery.

The hostelry, named the Oil City Hotel, was among the pioneer taverns of the place.  After a year's experience, he returned to merchandising and kept a grocery store about two years.  In the great fire, May 23, 1866, his entire property was destroyed, his loss (over $45,000) being the largest of all the sufferers.  In 1868, he re-entered the business world, having purchased the furniture stock of Nelson H. Brown, the pioneer furniture dealer of the city.  He was married January 1st, 1850 to Leah Jane, daughter of John and Polly Herpst.  Five children were born to them, of whom three are living.  Grandfather Christian S., died in 1832, aged a hundred and three.  His wife was born in Switzerland.  He was in Patty Watson's company in the Revolutionary army.  For some time they were in an old fort changed from a mill in Buffalo Valley, Pa.  His wife and children were hidden on the Laurel Mountains, and subsisted for four weeks on dry corn meal.  The trouble with the Indians were very serious.  Many settlers as well as Indians were killed.
