This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

E. F. Shively, Prominent Banker Here Quarter Of Century, Dies
A man who made banking history in Middletown before his retirement less than two years ago, E. F. Shively, 72, died at 5:45 a.m. today after an illness of six months.
Mr. Shively, who still was a director of the First American Bank, which he served as vice president and director for almost a quarter of a century, was active in many civic endeavors until ill health forced him further to retire into private life.
Mr. Shively was a recognized authority on banking when he came to Middletown in January of 1925 to become a director of the then First and Merchants National Bank, predecessor of the First National Bank. He had been a national bank examiner for a number of years, and his vast knowledge of the banking business was recognized throughout the state.
Born and educated in Dayton, Mr. Shively was a graduate of Trotwood High School and received his financial background in studies at Miami-Jacobs Business College in Dayton.
Calvin W. Verity, president of the First National Bank, said this morning upon learning of Mr. Shively's death, "he served for a quarter of a century as a top official in our bank, and he will be greatly missed by our officers, board of directors and employes."
"Mr. Shively in his very quiet way gave consideration to the problems that were brought before him, and he was able to be helpful over the years to a great many people."
"While Mr. Shively had been retired for almost two years, until recently he had been an active member of the board, and because of his experience, his advice and counsel will be greatly missed."
While his duties as executive vice president of the bank were time-consuming and demanding, he still found time to lend his talents to civic activities and to his Presbyterian faith.
He was a life member of the board of governors of the Civic Association and of its executive committee, served the YMCA as a director, and found a place in his busy life to share his knowledge with the various committees of the Ohio Bankers Association and the Butler County Bankers Association.
During World War II, he was chairman of the Middletown War Loan Committee and directed six war loan campaigns under the supervision of the U. S. Treasury Department, raising funds in the Middletown area to assist in financing the war. In each drive under Mr. Shively, the quotas were exceeded by wide margins.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church, he served it for many years both as a deacon and as an elder.
Mr. Shively retired from the First National Bank as executive vice president in January of 1949, but still remained an adviser as a director of the bank. At that time he moved his residence from Route 25, now occupied by Dr. and Mrs. E. O. Bauer, and with Mrs. Shively moved to the Bauer's apartment at 64 South Main St.
Surviving him are the widow, Mrs. Margaret Shively; one son, Edward H. Shively of Middletown; one daughter, Mrs. Norman Hagedorn, and two grandchildren, Charles and James Hagedorn.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Wilson Funeral Home. The Rev. Russell Galloway of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

Rev. Shively Rites Held At Knoxville
The funeral  of the late Rev. J. L. Shively, former Butler county resident, was held from the Methodist church of Knoxville, Ill., Friday afternoon in charge of Rev. W. F. Day, pastor of the church, who paid a fine tribute to deceased with whom he had been associated for the past three years.
Dr. T. E. Newland, former district superintendent and now pastor of the First Methodist church of Galesburg, Ill., gave the sermon, and in his remarks referred to Rev. Shively, as a man who had lived the life of a cultured Christian gentleman.
Twenty-seven ministers of the Galesburg district occupied the choir loft, Rev. C. L. W. Smith giving the prayer and Rev. Blue and Rev. Boswell reading the Scripture. A male quartet rendered favorite selections of the deceased "Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break" and "In The Sweet Bye and Bye".  The pall bearers were officials of the Knoxville church.  The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful.
Pastor In Butler County
Rev. Shively was born in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, September 14, 1855.  His father died when he was six months old, when he and his mother went to make their home with his grandparents.  He attended Mt. Pleasant Academy and taught four years in the Huntington township schools.  In 1875 he entered Mt. He was married in 1888 to Clara E. Morris, daughter of the late Isaac K. Morris, and of this union four children survive as follows:  Miss Harriet Shively, of Knoxville, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Lou Knight, and Mrs. Margaret Legette, both of Detroit, Mich., and Morris Lowe Shively, an officer of the U. S. Marine corps, stationed at Quantico, Va.
Returned To Illinois
In 1904 he moved with his family to Santa Fe, N.M., going there for the health of the eldest daughter, Myra, who died after a stay of a year and one-half.  During his two-year stay as pastor of St. John's Methodist church of Santa Fe he was chaplain of the house of representatives.
In 1906 he was transferred to the central Illinois conference and served the following charges:  Genesen, Bushnell, Knoxville, Odell, Viola, Vermont and Prairie City.  In September, 1928, upon completion of 44 years of active service he retired in Knoxville, Ill., where resided at the time of his death August 8, 1933.
The interment was made in Knoxville cemetery, the short service being a most impressive one.

The newspaper obituary for Clara Morris Shively was found in The Hamilton Journal - The Daily News, Monday, November 30, 1942, Page 13, Column 8:

Shively, died Sunday morning in Knoxville, Ill.  She was a former resident of Butler county, having been born east of Hamilton in the district then known as Pleasant View and was the oldest daughter of Isaac and Mary Thomas Morris, a widely-known pioneer family.
Mrs. Shively was married to Rev. Shively November 21, 1890, and they lived in Middletown, Eaton, and Lebanon, until Reverand Shively accepted a pastorate in the Methodist church in Las Vegas, N.M., where they remained for a short time because of the health of their oldest daughter, Myra.  For 30 years they had resided in Illinois.

Samuel Edward Shively And Wives From Butler County, Ohio

Samuel Edward Shively was born on 9-August-1889 in Gallia County, Ohio.  He was the son of Richard Shively and Emma Lyon (per Samuel's third marriage recorded in Butler County, Ohio in 1930). Samuel has left a good deal of history in the newspapers and records of Butler County, Ohio.

Samuel was married several times. His first marriage was ca. 1906 to Fay Blizzard. On the 1910 Walnut Township, Fairfield County, Ohio census is the household of Samuel Shively age 21, first marriage, married 4 years, wife Fay age 23 and son Raymond age 2.  Faye Blizzard Shively married second to P. E. Moury and they are found on the 1920 Marion County, Ohio census with stepchildren Raymond Shively age 12 and Bernice Shively age 8.

Samuel Shively married a second time to Nellie M. Sturgeon on 26-June-1911. From The Hamilton Evening Journal, Hamilton, Ohio, Wednesday, September 11, 1929, Page 15, Column 3 is the following:     Riotous living and associations with other women were charged against Samuel E. Shively, Hamilton, by Nellie M. Shively.  She asked custody of four children.  They were married June 26, 1911.

When Nellie M. Shively filed for divorce in 1929 she had most likely had enough of Samuel Shively as the following 1924 newspaper article was extracted from The Hamilton Daily News, Wednesday, May 7, 1924, Page 15, Column 4:
Wife Thwarts Proposed Trip
Samuel Shively Sentenced For Non-Support After Charge of "Triangle"
Samuel Shively, 34, of 648 Maple avenue, today was sentenced to serve 60 days at the Dayton workhouse on a charge of non-support filed against him late Tuesday at police headquarters by his wife, Mrs. Nellie Shively, 36.
Shively was arrested by police at a local shop just as he was preparing to quit his job and leave town with another woman, the police say.
According to the complaint registered by his wife, Shively has been going with another woman for two weeks and during that time failed to contribute to the support of his wife and five children ranging in ages from 10 months to 12 years.

Samuel didn't waste any time being unmarried as a record of his third marriage to Martha Chiles Sebalj (she was married prior to this marriage to John Sebalj) on 3-May-1930 is recorded in the Butler County, Ohio marriages.  Records indicate Martha and her first husband, John Sebalj, had some marital problems as recorded in The Hamilton Evening Journal, Tuesday, May 6, 1930, Page 16, Column 6:
"Stay Apart", Court Tells Couple
John Sebalj, 935 South Eleventh street, and his former wife, Mrs. Mary Shively, had a lively spat in municipal court Tuesday morning when each charged the other with disorderly conduct.
John and Martha were divorced 10 months ago.  The wife was given the children and a half interest in the South Eleventh street house and its contents.  John said Martha came to "his house" Monday and cut him in the face with a pair of scissors.  Martha showed black and blue marks on the arms, saying John put them there.
Martha was married last Saturday.  She said she will continue to go to "her house" until it is sold and the money divided.
Dismissing both charges, Municipal Court Judge Alphonse Pater ordered the couple to keep away from each other until the property is disposed of and proceeds distributed.

It appears things didn't go too well for Martha and Samuel Shively either because in The Hamilton Evening Journal, Wednesday, June 17, 1931, Page 15, Column 3-4:
Martha Shively Sues For Divorce
Martha Shively was compelled to support herself, children of her husband by another marriage, and his brother, her suit for a divorce from Samuel E. Shively, employe of a Hamilton shop, contends.  The petition, on file Tuesday in common pleas court, says they were wed May 3, 1930, and have no children.
Judge E. J. Kautz granted an order restraining Shively from molesting her and barring him from drawing his wages, after her plea that she has been "in fear of him at all times".
She has been afraid to go the their home to obtain her clothing, the petition says, following an alleged beating he administered May 16, last when he choked and struck her and tore her clothing.  She asks a share in crops growing on the farm of George Guenther.

The newspaper obituary for Samuel Shively was located in Journal-The Daily News, Monday, January 22, 1962, Page 4, Column 5:
