Remarkable Record

Miss Sarah Shively, for over 35 years past cook at the American Hotel in Brookville, died recently at the Punxsutawney Hospital, where she had gone a week before to undergo and operation for a tumorous growth. The deceased was aged 55 years and her life was a remarkable one, as she had never been off duty for any cause, and accumulated from her wages an estate valued at over $30,000, mostly cash. Burial was made at Coolspring.

Sarah Shively was born on 20-Jun-1862 in Clearfield County, PA and died 3-Sep-1916 in Jefferson County, PA. She was the daughter of Jacob Shively born ca. 1824 in Germany died 1871 in Clearfield County, PA and Louisa R. Kicher born 27-Mar-1826 in Germany died 20-Apr-1890 in Clearfield County, PA buried Troutville Union Cemetery, Clearfield County, PA.

Located on the 1860 Brady Township, Clearfield County, PA census is the family of Jacob Shivly age 36, wife Louisa age 34, daughter Caroline age 8, daughter Louisa age 6, son Frederick age 4 and son Eulius age 2. On the 1870 Bell Township, Clearfield County, PA census are Jacob Shiveman age 47, wife Louisa age 44, daughter Caroline age 18, daughter Louisa age 16, son Frederick age 14, son Jacob age 12, son George ate 10, daughter Sarah age 7, son Samuel age 6, daughter Mary age 4 and daughter Elizabeth age 3. On the 1880 Bell Township, Clearfield County, PA census is the household of Louia Shively age 48, son Fred age 32, son Samuel age 15, daughter Louisa age 25 and named son age 3. On the 1900 Brookville, Jefferson County, PA census are G. D. Buffington born 1861 age 39 a hotel proprietor and living in hotel is Sarah Shively born Jun-1864 age 35 with occupation of cook.  On the 1910 American Hotel, Jefferson County, PA census is Sara Shiveley age 45 with occupation of cook.

Franklin Eugene Shively was born on 24-Mar-1891 in Curwensville, Clearfield County, PA and died on 16-Jul-1977 in Decatur Township, Clearfield County, PA. Franklin Shively was the son of James Henry Shively and Ann Frazier. Franklin was married on 13-Oct-1914 to Lucy May Anderson who was the daughter of George and Mary J. Anderson. In 1959 a newspaper in Clearfield County, PA was featuring weekly arial photos of farms in the county and asking readers to identify the farms.  The following was extracted from the Clearfield Progress, Saturday, April 4, 1959, Page 7, Columns 3-6:

West Decatur R.D. Farm Was Last Week's Mystery

Moving days are always busy times in family households. And for the Robert L. Shimmels and Mrs. Frank Shively it was doubly so, for both Mr. Shimmel and Mrs. Shively took time out from their busy moving to stop in at The Progress and identify last Saturday's Mystery Farm.

The two persons are recently "double owners", so to speak, of the West Decatur R.D. farm which is located on the Morgan Run Road about two and one-half miles south of Blue Ball. During the past week the Shimmels, the new owners, were in the process of moving in and Mrs. Shively, past owner, of moving out. "We just aquired the place on Feb. 27", Mr. Shimmel reported.

Several owners have held title to this 25-acre tract in the past, among them being W J. Husted, who now lives in the Passmore Hotel at Philipsburg. The farm apparently was settled in the early 1800's and was a part of the Gearhart estate.

On April 4, 1911, Mr. Husted bought the property from John S. Gearhart and actually built up the farm and started work on various buildings. Also a miner, Mr. Husted practiced farming and reared his family on this farm.

In 1944, when his son was killed in the service, Mr. Husted sold the property to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shively and moved to Philipsburg.

He and his daughter, Mrs. Jack Price of West Decatur, were among those persons correctly identifying the Mystery Farm. Other neighbors and friends who correctly guessed the farm are: Wesley Kling, West Decatur R.D.; Mrs. Boyd Richner, West Decatur; Larry Fahr, Progress carrier at New Castle; Mrs. Carl Smeal, West Decatur R.D. 1 and Mrs. Harry Bloom Curwensville.

"We moved to the farm in April of 1945", Mrs. Shively continued. "And we didn't have to go too far, she smiled, "just about two miles down the road".

The gray shingled house, which is nestled in an attractive setting of greens and pine trees, was built in 1912 by Mr. Husted. Mr. Shively built the large barn about 1949. The first barn, a small structure which is still standing, was apparently constructed by Mr. Husted many years ago. The house, of course, has been modernized and remodeled in recent years.

Frank Shively married Lucy Anderson Oct. 13, 1914. Mr. Shively died about two years ago. They had six children, four of whom are living: Mrs. Melvin (Anna) Davis, Ashland; Ray, Niagra Falls, N.Y.; James, West Decatur; and Ralph, DuBois. Mrs. Shively now has 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She is a member of Blue Ball Grange, and family members often attend the Ohio E.U.B. Church. Rug-making and quilting are favorite hobbies. "I also enjoy gardening", she added, "especially in the line of growing flowers".

The present owners, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shimmel were married Oct. 27, 1946. Mrs. Shimmel is the former Iva Mease. They have five children; Robert, Elwood, Joyce Elaine, James and Walter Roy.

Mrs. Shimmel also is a quilting enthusiast and enjoys sewing, too. "The boys and I like to hunt and fish in our spare time", Mr. Shimmel said. He was instrumental in helping to organize the 4-H Club at West Decatur, too. "When Mr. Mitchell (W. O. Mitchell, county farm agent) first came, I helped him in starting one of the first 4-H Clubs in the county", he explained.

General farming was once practiced on the property, at the time Mr. Shively owned it. Besides the cows and chickens raised fro the family's own use, calves, cream, butter and eggs were sold. Crops of oats, corn and hay were rotated. Mr. Shively also worked for Harbison-Walker in Passmore mines for 32 years.

The Shimmel's intend to practice truck farming and raise strawberries on the tract. They didn't have to travel too far in moving, either, for they previously lived about two miles out of Blue Ball. Mr. Shimmel plans to sell his old property of 14 acres on which his house burned last November and do all the faming on the newly-acquired farm. Besides being a busy farmer, he is employed by the Purity Milk Corp.

Between getting settled in their new home and getting truck farming operations under way, the active Shimmels have a good slice of their future already cut out for them.

And what of Mrs. Shively's future, now that she can take a little time out from a busy farming life? "I plan to visit around with my family awhile", she said, "and then settle in DuBois with my son, Ralph".

Franklin E. Shively

WEST DECATUR -- Franklin Eugene Shively, 86, of West Decatur died yesterday at 7:30 a.m.

A son of the late James and Ann (Frazier) Shively, he was born in Curwensville March 21, 1891. For the past 32 years he had been employed by the Harbinson-Walker Refractories.

Mr. Shively is survived by his wife, the former Lucy Anderson, and the following children: Mrs. Melvin (Anna) Davis of Osceola Mills, Ray F. Shively of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; James Shively of West Decatur and Ralph Shively of Dubois.

Thirteen grandchildren and the following brother and sisters also survive: John S. Shively, Miss Mae Shively, Mrs. Pearl Bailor and Mrs. Glenn Thurston all of Curwensville; Max Shively of Clearfield, James Shively of Minota, S.D.; Mrs. Clara Wingate of Ohio and Mrs. Jennie Given of Chambersburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two children and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, at  2 p.m from the Lininger Funeral Home in Curwensville with Rev. Thomas O. Fuss of West Decatur officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at Mr. Shively's late home from 7 p.m. today until 10 a.m. Saturday when the body will be taken to the Lininger Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services.

Fred Ray Shively was born 9-Mar-1894 in Troutville, Clearfield County, PA and died 23-Jun-1955 in Dubois, Clearfield County, PA.  He is buried in Luthersburg Union Cemetery, Clearfield County, PA.  Fred R. Shively was the son of George L. Shively and Blanche Welshone.  

Listed on the 1910 Boiling Spring District, Allegheny County, Virginia census is the household of George L. Shively age 48, wife Blanche age 37, son Murrill A. age 19, son Fred R. age 16, son W. J. Bryan age 13, daughter Isabel M. age 10, son George L. Jr. age 6 and son Lonnie age 3.  Located on the 1930 DuBois City, Clearfield County, PA census is the household of Blanche Shively age 57, son Fred R. age 36 and son Lonnie B. age 23.

Fred R. Shively Died After Short Illness

Fred R. Shively, 61, operator of the Shively Jewelry Store in DuBois, died suddenly last Thursday night, June 23rd, in the DuBois Hospital, three hours after he was stricken ill at his home, 233 South Highland Street, DuBois.

Mr. Shively was acquainted with many Brockway and area residents. He operated his jewelry store for 25 years, and had resided in DuBois for the past 40 years.

He was the son of the late George and Blanche (Welochons) Shively, born March 9, 1894 at Troutville. He was a graduate of the Bowman Technical School of Watchmaking.

He leaves his mother, four brothers: Merle A., of Towanda, N.Y.; William B., of DuBois; George, of Karns City; and Lonnie of Middleton, Pa.; and a sister, Mrs. Mabel Hallowell, of Struthers, Ohio. His father died in 1912, and a brother, Ralph, in 1898, and a sister, Miss Nellie, in 1906.

Friends were received at the Moore Funeral Chapel until 2:00 p.m. funeral time Sunday. Rev. S. D. Sigler of the Trinity Lutheran Church officiated with interment; following in the Luthersburg Cemetery.

Clayton W. Shively And Wife, Clara Schell In Clearfield County, PA

Clayton W. Shively was born 6-Nov-1879 in Laurel Pike, Union County, PA and died 22-Sep-1957 at Allentown Hospital, Lehigh County, PA.  He was the son of William Isaiah Shively and Mary Ann Schaeffer.   William Isaiah Shively was born 15-Aug-1854 and died 22-May-1936 in Centre County, PA. William Isaiah Shively was the son of Daniel Shively and Elizabeth Keisler (Keister). Clayton Shively married Clara Schell.  Clara Schell was born 17-Aug-1882 in Mifflinburg, Union County, PA and died 14-Dec-1964 in the Clearfield Hospital.  She was the daughter of George Schell and Ellen Cornelius.

Open Hours Planned For Shively Anniversary Sunday, September 18

Sunday, September 18, will be an important day for Mr. and Mrs. Clayton W. Shively of 209 Maple Avenue, for on that date they'll be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.  An open house for their relatives and many friends is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Shively have been residents of Clearfield for the past 40 years and have lived that entire time in the same house at Plymptonville.  They are the parents of five children: Mrs. Margaret Betts, George and Lester of Clearfield; John of New York and Mrs. Mary Jo Knepp of Harrisburg.   They also have 11 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

The couple was married in a ceremony at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Schell, at Mifflinburg, September 18, 1905.  The ceremony was preformed by Rev. Vaughn T. Rue, pastor of the Methodist Church.

Mr. Shively is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Isaiah Shively of Glen Irons.  The newlyweds began housekeeping at Laurelton.  They later moved to Philipsburg where they resided for about five years before moving to their present home at Clearfield.

Mr. Shively has been employed for the past 18 years by the Pennsylvania Department of Highways.  He and his wife have been members of the West Side Methodist Church since moving to Clearfield and Mrs. Shively is a member of the church's Women's Society for Christian Service.  Mr. Shively is also a longtime member of the Old Town Sportsmen's Association.

Clayton W. Shively

Clayton W. Shively, 77, of 209 Maple Ave., Clearfield, died at 7:20 a.m. yesterday at Allentown where he was visiting relatives.  Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Born at Millmont, Union County, November, 1879, Mr. Shively had been a resident of Clearfield since 1915.  An employe of the Pennsylvania Department of Highways for the past 20 years, he was a member of the West Side Methodist Church and the Old Town Sportsmen's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara Shively of Clearfield, and the following sons and daughters:  Mrs. William I Betts, George W. Shively and Lester W. Shively, all of Clearfield; Mrs. Mary K. Knepp, Harrisburg, and John A. Shively, Tonawanda, N.Y.  Eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be from the Nicholson Funeral Home Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Earl N. Rowe officiating.  Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. tomorrow until time of the services Wednesday.

The name of a brother , Wilford Shively of Glen Iron, Union County, was inadvertently omitted from the obituary of Clayton W. Shively, 77-year-old Clearfield resident, which appeared in yesterday's Progress.

Mrs. Clara Shively

Mrs. Clara Carr Schell Shively, 82, of Clearfield, widow of Clayton W. Shively, died yesterday at 11:50 p.m. in the Clearfield Hospital.

Born Aug. 17, 1882, at Mifflinburg, she was the daughter of the late George and Ellen Cornelius Schell.

She was a member of the West Side Methodist Church.

Surviving are the following children:  Mrs. Willis J. Knepp, Harrisburg; John A., North Tonawanda, N.Y.; Mrs. William I. Betts Jr., George W. and Lester W., Clearfield; 11 grand-children and six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Bess Read, Allentown.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Nicholson Funeral Home.  The Rev. Dr. Willis J. Willard will officiate.  Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Friends will be received in the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9 p.m., tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and until time of services Thursday.

John William Shively, Son Of James Henry Shively And Annie Frazier, From Clearfield County, Pennsylvania

A recent genealogy request was received regarding additional information on the family of John William Shively who had lived in Clearfield County, PA. The subjects of the 2-June-2012 blog were his parents, James Henry Shively and Annie Frazier.  

Following is information for John William Shively who was born 2-April-1880 at Petersburg, Huntingdon County, PA and died 18-May-1960 at Curwensville, Clearfield County, PA. He was married first to Minnie Daub (Dobb) on 4-Dec-1902 in Clearfield County.  Minnie was born Sep-1880 and died 21-Oct-1915 at the Clearfield Hospital of surgical shock. John William Shively was married second to Lydia Myrtle Stiver.  They were married in May-1918. Myrtle was the daughter of Andrew C. Stiver and Edith Stinerock.  

John and Minnie Shively are listed on the 1910 Clearfield County, PA census. Listed in the family are John Shively age 30, wife Minnie age 28, daughter Hazel age 6, daughter Mildred age 3 and daughter Jean age 1 and several months. Listed on the 1920 Clearfield County, PA census, Pike Township, Curwensville Precinct is John W. Shiveley age 39, wife Myrtle age 25, daughter Mildred age 15, daughter Jean age 11, son Paul age 8 and daughter Ruby age 4.  On the 1930 Clearfield County, PA census is the record of John Shively age 50, wife Myrtle age 35, daughter Ruby age 14, grandson William Durst age 6 and Lawrence Stiver age 16.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle (Stiver) Shively and these children:  Mrs. Hazel Haines, Muncy; Mrs. Mildred Chusing, Mayville, N.Y.; Mrs. Jean Irvin, Pleasant Gap; Paul, Curwensville; two stepchildren, Mrs. Ruby Owens, Lockport, NY and Lawrence Stiver, Curwensville.

The following brothers and sisters also survive: Mack Shively, Clearfield; Mae Shively, Curwensville; Mrs. Jane Given, Chambersburg; Mrs. Clara Wingate, St. Petersburg, Fla; Mrs. Pearl Bailor, Curwensville; James Shively, Minot, N.D.; Mrs. Glenna Thurstin, Pine Grove Mills; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

CURWENSVILLE--Mrs. Lydia Myrtle Shively, 70, of Naulton Road, Curwensville, died in the Clearfield Hospital yesterday at 11:50 a.m. A daughter of Andrew C. and Edith (Stinerock) Stiver, she was born at Force, Elk County,, June 16, 1894.

Surviving are the following children:  Lawrence Stiver, Curwensville; Mrs. Ruby Owens, Lockport, N.Y.; these stepchildren; Mrs. Hazel Hines, Muncy; Mrs. Mildred Cushing, Mayville, N.Y.; Mrs. Jean Irwin and Paul Shively, both of Curwensville.

Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren; a sister and a brother, Herbert Stiver and Mrs. Minnie Forcey, both of Curwensville.    

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shively, in 1960, her parents and one sister.

Burial services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. from the Russell H. Lininger Funeral Home, Curwensville, with the Rev. Dr. E. Roy Hauser officiating.  Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 p.m. today until the hour of service Saturday.

Ruby A. Owens, a retired Harrison Radiator Division production worker, died Saturday (June 6, 1998) in Odd Fellows and Rebekah Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.  Mrs. Owens, 82, was born Ruby Shively in Curwensville, Pa., and come to Lockport in 1945.

She was employed for 28 years as a production worker at the Harrison Radiator plant.  She retired in 1977.

She was a member of the Navy Club, Harrison Retirees and United Auto Workers Union Local 686.

Mrs. Owens is survived by three grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Gaul Funeral Home, 263 East Ave. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Lawrence D. Stiver

Retired from Howe Leather Co.

Lawrence D. Stiver, 86, of Curwensville, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000.  Born Dec. 17, 1913, he was a son of the late John and Myrtle Shively.  He was united in marriage to Alice Johnson in 1940, and she preceded him in death April 14, 1965.

One daughter, Sharon L. Dick of Petersburg survives, along with two nieces and a nephew, three grandsons  and two great-grandsons.

One daughter, Cindy Lou Stiver, preceded him in death May 5, 1953.

Mr. Stiver retired from Howe Leather Co. in Curwensville, after many years of service.  He was active in his community and served as chairman of the Curwensville Days Parade Committee for many years.  He was also the manager of the Curwensville baseball team.

He was a member of the Curwensville Rescue Hose and Ladder Company, where he was president for 13 years, Clearfield County Fireman's Association, Central District Firemen's Association and the Curwensville Rescue Hose and Ladder Fire Police.

Funeral services will be held at the Choirboy Funeral Home in Curwensville Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Donald Hurley officiating.  Interment will be made in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Curwensville Rescue Hose and Ladder Fire Police or the Curwensville United Methodist Church.

James Henry Shively And Wife, Anna Frazier, In Clearfield County, PA

Located in The Clearfield Progress, Saturday Evening, October 3, 1925, Page 8, Column 2 was the following obituary for Henry Shively:   Henry Schively, a resident of the Naulton section, died on Thursday evening, after a short illness of pneumonia, aged about 69 years.  Deceased was born and reared at or near Shaver's creek in Huntingdon county.  He removed from that section to this neighborhood with the family a good many years ago.  Last spring he passed through a most serious illness, and was just recovering nicely when stricken last Sunday with pneumonia.  He is survived by his widow and a large family of sons and daughters.

Located in The Clearfield Progress, Friday Evening, January 8, 1937, Page 14, Columns 5-6: Mrs. J.H. (Annie) Shively died Thursday, December 31, 1936, at her home in Naulton.  Funeral services were held Saturday, January 2, 1937, Rev. Edwin H. Witman, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church officiating.  Interment was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.  A loyal and devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 26 years, her passing is mourned by a host of friends and relatives in Curwensville and vicinity.  She is survived by one sister, Mrs. D. F. Breon of Rockford, Ill.; one brother, John Frazier of Winnebago, Ill., and 10 children as follows: Miss Mae F. Shively, John Shively, Mrs. E. J. Peters, Mrs. William Bailor and Mrs. H. C. Thurstin, all of Curwensville;  W. Mack Shively of Ebensburg;  Mrs. J. R. Given of Uniontown, Pa., and James Shively of Minot, N.D.  She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
