This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Francis Marion Shively was born on 17-July-1893 in Marshall County, IN and died on 1-October-1914 in Fulton County, IN. He was the son of Frank Shively and Ursula Swinehart.  Francis Marion Shively was married on 8-August-1913 to Readie Black.

Newspaper articles help tell the story of this Shively family.  The obituary for Francis Shively was located in the Tri-County Gazette, Mentone, IN, Thursday, October 8, 1914, Page 1, Column 5:
Obituary
Francis Marion Shively, son of Frank and Versula Shively, was born at Tippecanoe, Marshall county, Indiana,  July 17, 1893, and departed this life at Woodlawn hospital, Rochester, Ind., Thursday Oct. 1, 1914, aged 21 years, 2 months and 14 days.
Francis Onstott, as he was commonly known, came to Akron with his mother when but a small lad and has lived all his life in and near town.
He was educated in our public schools, leaving high school in his junior year to take up  a work  position, to relieve the burdens and cares of his widowed mother.  The last three years he has been employed at Strongs' store where he served the public in a gracious, pleasing and honorable manner.
He was united in marriage with Readie, oldest daughter of Al Black, at Warsaw, Ind., August 8, 1913.
During the tabernacle meeting last winter, Mr. and Mrs. Shively both confessed their faith in Christ and were baptized by Elder McCallery of the Church of God.

On the 1910 Fulton County, IN,  town of Akron, census is the family of George W. Onstott age 66, wife Ursula age 41, son Chas. S age 29, stepson Francis age 16. On the 1900 Fulton County, IN census is the family of George W Onstott born Sept 1844, wife Ursula born July 1868, son Charles born July 1881, daughter Nellie born Dec 1887, son Jessie born Dec 1890, and stepson Francis born July 1893.

Indiana marriage records list the marriage of Franklin Shively and Ursula Swihart on 22-July-1889 in Kosciusko County, IN.  The marriage of George W. Onstott and Ursula Swinehart is recorded as July 1896 in  Fulton County, IN.

It appears that Frank and Ursula had marital problems.  In the Tri-County Gazette, Saturday, January 7, 1893, Page 4, Column 4:
----Jan. 6, 1893.  My wife, Ursula Shively, has left without any cause whatever.  All store debts contracted after above date by said Ursula Shively I will not be responsible for.
                                                                                                          F. Shively

Further details of the story are revealed in the article from the Tri-County Gazette, Mentone, IN, Saturday, March 4, 1893, Page 1, Columns 5-6:
Eloped for Fun
Frank Shively, of near Mentone, was in Rochester Tuesday for the purpose of having Sheriff King serve papers in the divorce suit brought against his eloping wife.  He had learned that she had returned from her jaunt with Elmer Gochenour and was stopping at the home of Mike Brown.  She accompanied the sheriff to town and claims she was "only in fun" when she deserted her husband, and is thoroughly disgusted with Frank for regarding it so seriously.  She admits that she and Elmer have been having a "good time" for the past several weeks, but she is now ready to settle down to ordinary every day life again.
Mr. Shively informed the Sentinel that he could not be induced to again receive her into his home and no amount of pleading for forgiveness will establish her in his affections.  He has given her what property belongs to her and secured a promise that she will not put in an appearance when the divorce case is called in the Warsaw court one week from Monday.--(Rochester Sentinel)

No further information could be located on Franklin Shively after the 1893 articles.  The obituaries for Francis Marion Shively's mother and stepfather were located. In the Rochester Sentinel, Wednesday, July 11, 1945:
Mrs. Ursula Onstott, 77, passed away Tuesday 10 a.m. at her home in Akron from a heart ailment.  For the past few years Mrs. Onstott had been residing at the Soldier Home in West Lafayette, however, for the past two months, she was at her home in Akron making preparations to return to Lafayette this coming fall.  Mrs. Onstott had been a resident of Henry township for over two score years.
Ursula, daughter of Levi and Barbara Swinehart, was born in Marshall county, Indiana on July 1st, 1868.  In 1889 she was married to Frank Shively, who preceded her in death a few years later.  In a second ceremony solemnized in 1896 she was united in marriage with George Onstott.  Mr. Onstott passed away on May 2nd, 1911.  For a number of years Mrs. Onstott resided on a farm east of Akron and in 1912 she moved to her present home in Akron.  The deceased was a charter member of the W.S.C.S.
Survivors are a few half-sisters and step-children.  A step-son, Jess Onstott, resides in Edwardsburg, Mich.  A son born to the first union preceded in death in 1914.
Funeral services in charge of Rev. R. A. Fenstermacher will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Akron Methodist church and interment will be made in the IOOF cemetery, Akron.  The body was taken to the Moyer funeral home where friends may call up until the hour of the services.

In the Rochester Weekly Republican, Thursday Morning, May 11, 1911, Page 4, Column 4:
The funeral of Mr. George Onstott was held at the M. E. church, last Friday afternoon.  Mr. Onstott was in failing health for about two years before his death.  He was stricken with thrombosis and late last fall was at the Soldiers' Home at Marion, Indiana, but after a few weeks was conveyed to the National Soldiers' Home at Washington, D.C., where he passed away last Thursday morning.  He was an honorable and upright citizen, a brave soldier and a kind husband and father.  He leaves a widow, a daughter and two sons, and many friends and comrades.  Interment at Odd Fellows cemetery.

Frank Shively And Wife, Mary B. McCausland Who Lived In Morrow County, Ohio

The following article was extracted from the History Of Morrow County, Ohio, A Narrative Account Of Its Historical Progress, Its People, And Its Principal Interests, By A. J. Baughman, Assisted By Robert F. Bartlett, Illustrated, Vol II, The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago-New York, 1911, Page 781:
FRANK SHIVELY – Among the generous, whole souled, public spirited citizens of Chesterville and its vicinity must assuredly be numbered Frank Shively, who in the useful capacity of a skilled blacksmith has contributed his share to the prosperity and progress of the community in which he is situated.  He was born November 30, 1852, near Johnsonsville, Ohio and is the son of Jacob and Adaline (Lamb) Shively, the former a native of Franklin county, and the latter of Ohio.  The subject is one of a family of five children, the other members being John, who died in infancy; Martha; and two half brothers, Ben and Lew.
In the year 1889 Mr. Shively was united in marriage to Miss Mary B. McCausland, a daughter of John and Henrietta (Smith) McCausland, of Chesterville.  The McCausland family consisted of nine children, three of whom were sons and six daughters, following being an enumeration:  David L., who died in infancy; B Frank; Arthur V; Mary B; Izola; Gladys; Edith; Wastella; Anna K. In youth Frank and Arthur McCausland were employed as clerks, and they now reside in Harney county, Oregon, where they have homesteaded three hundred and twenty acres of land.  Anna and Gladys became trained nurses, Marion being the scene of their activity.  The latter married Arthur Seffner and her home is in Marion.
Mr. Shively was reared in this vicinity and received his education in the schools of Richland county.  At an early age he embarked in the blacksmithing business, and when marriage had placed upon his shoulders new responsibilities he continued in the same field and chose for his permanent location Chesterville, in whose many-sided life he has ever since taken an active and useful part.  His geniality and kindliness have served to make him popular here and his thrift and industry have crowned his labors with prosperity.
Mr. and Mrs. Shively share their pleasant and hospitable home with one daughter, Edith Franceine, now aged seventeen years.  She is one of the admirable young women of the place, who with her father and mother enjoys the goodwill of their many friends and neighbors.
In his political affiliation Mr. Shively gives heart and hand to the policies and principles of the Democratic party, which since his earliest voting days he has supported.  He is interested in all measures likely to result in benefit to the many and can ever be depended upon to give his support to the same.

Frank Shively was born on 30-Nov-1852 in Richland County, OH and died on 1-Nov-1928.  He was buried in the Chesterville Cemetery.  Mary B (Brittie) McCausland Shively was born Apr-1866 and died on 22-Apr-1924.  They were married on 1-Nov-1888 in Morrow County, OH (per Morrow County, OH marriage records).  Their daughter, Edith F. was born in Dec-1893.   Frank and wife are listed on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census records in Chesterville, Morrow County, OH.

Daniel Shively, Son Of Peter Shively, Who Lived In Tuscarawas County, Ohio And Ionia County, Michigan

Daniel Shively who lives in the state of California contacted some of the Shively researchers seeking to find other Shively's interested in the family history of Daniel Shively who was the son of Peter Shively.  If you descend from this Shively line and are interested in sharing information with Daniel please leave a comment on this blog.
Located on the 1850 Tuscarawas County, Ohio census record is the family of Peter Shively in Sandy Township.  Listed in the household are Peter Shively age 39, wife Sarah, daughter Elizabeth age 21, son William age 19, daughter Margarett A age 18, daughter Mary J age 14, son Daniel age 12 and son Peter age 9.    By 1860 Peter and family have moved to Ionia County, Michigan where they are located on the census record.       The death certificate for son Daniel Shively lists his parents as Peter Shively and Sarah Miller.  There is a marriage certificate in Tuscarawas County for Peter Shevely and Sarah Foster dated 10-April-1828.  It would be interesting if someone could comment about these marriage records.  Is it possible these early Tuscarawas marriage records were recopied at a later date?  The reason is that the handwriting appears to be the style of early 1900's rather than the style of writing from the early 1800's.  If this occurred it might be possible that in transcribing Sarah's last name was recorded incorrectly.   The information on the death certificate was a William Shively who it is believed was Daniel Shively's son. One would think that he would know the name of his grandmother Sarah Shively.
From the Ohio death certificate Daniel Shively is recorded born 16-Dec-1838.  He died 4-June-1913 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. His wife was Phoebe Ann. Daniel and Phoebe Ann are listed on the 1880 Ionia County, Michigan census with son William age 9.  Another son of Daniel and Phoebe was Frank Shively born 17-Oct-1882 in Ionia County, Michigan and died 28-Sep-1941 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Frank married Elizabeth (Bessie) Murphy who was born 29-Nov-1883 in Rockford, Winnebago County, IL died 7-Dec-1963 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.
Several newspaper articles were located regarding the family of Frank Shively and Bessie Murphy Shively.  Located in The Rockford Daily Register-Gazette, Thursday, June 12, 1913, Page 1, Column 7:
Baby Dies On Day Of Grandfather’s Burial
Frank Shively Loses His Father And Daughter By Death At Home In Toledo, O.
Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shively, of Toledo, O., formerly of Rockford, have been informed of the death of their little daughter Jane, which occurred last Saturday.  Mr. Shively’s father died a week ago Wednesday, and his funeral was held on the day the grandchild passed away.  The baby, who was twenty months old, was buried on Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shively moved to Toledo from Rockford about a year ago.

Rockford Republic, Tuesday, Evening, October 20, 1903, Page 5, Column 2:
Announcement has been made of the coming wedding of Mr. Frank Shively of Lansing, Mich., and Miss Bessie Murphy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Murphy of this city.  The bride is a popular young lady and a wide circle of friends will extend advance congratulations on the coming event.
Mr. Shively has made him home in Rockford since the beginning of the current year and is a popular and worthy young man.

The Rockford Morning Star, Wednesday, January 27, 1904, Page 5, Column 4:
Will Wed Tonight
Miss Bessie Murphy and Mr. Frank Shively will wed this evening.  Mr. Shively is connected with Louck’s restaurant and Miss Murphy is a well known young lady who has many friends.

Rockford Republic, Thursday Evening, January 28, 1904, Page 7, Column 3:
Murphy-Shively Wedding
Miss Bessie Murphy and Frank Shively were married last evening at St. Mary’s parsonage, the ceremony being performed at 8 o’clock by Rev. Fr. McMahon.  After the wedding service the bridal couple were tendered a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thro.  Mr. and Mrs. Shively will be at home at Lansing, Mich., next month.

It would be interesting to know if the Daniel Shively age 83 and wife Sarah Shively age 82 and James Shively age 41 who are listed on the 1850 Tuscarawas County, Ohio census in the household of John J. Wolf are related to Peter Shively.   Is it possible they are the parents of Peter Shively?      It appears that by 1860 Daniel Shively has passed away because James Shively and Sarah are located on the 1860 Jefferson County, Ohio census record.  Is it possible this Shively line descends from Daniel Shively who came to America in 1749?  This immigrant Daniel Shively was born 26-May-1709 in Waldenberg(Switzerland) and died 1763 in Frederick County, VA.  It is known that this Daniel had a son Daniel Shively baptized 29-Jan-1730 who died in Jefferson County, OH in 1808.  Is it possible the Daniel Shively in 1850 in Tuscarawas County(the one who was 83) was the son of the Daniel Shively who was baptized 1730?

This blog was created to help the Shively researchers find their lineage.  If you have information on these Shively lines your information and comments will be appreciated.
