This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

William Jackson Shively And Artessima Jane Simmons Who Lived In Richland County, Ohio

William Jackson Shively was born on 10-Jan-1842 and died on 25-Sep-1909 in Richland Co., OH.  He was the son of William Shively and Nancy Cunningham. Nancy Cunningham was the daughter of Capt. James Cunningham and wife, Margaret.  From the Richland Shield & Banner, 26-Jan-1895:  The funeral of Mrs. Nancy Shively took place at Butler today.  The deceased was a daughter of the late Capt. James Cunningham, as was born September 15, 1812, while the family was enroute from Richland To Licking County, to escape the depredations of the Indians.  Mrs. Shively was a solider's widow, and leaves two children, a son and a daughter, both married.  The deceased was a sister of the late Mrs. Baughman, of this city.

William Jackson Shively was married 1st on 20-Oct-1864 in Richland Co., OH to Artessima Jane Simmons.  From the Mansfield Weekly News, 4-Aug-1887:  Mrs. William Shively died very suddenly Wednesday morning and was interred in the Easterly Cemetery the same afternoon.  

William Jackson Shively was married 2nd on 16-Jul-1891 in Richland Co., OH to Martha Elizabeth Garber, daughter of David Garber and Susannah Leedy. Martha Elizabeth died 8-Sep-1927 in Richland County.  From The Mansfield News, Friday, September 9, 1927, Page 28 , Column 3:
County Native Dies After Long Illness
Mrs. Martha Shively, aged 69 years, widow of the late William Shively and a native of Jefferson township, died Thursday afternoon at her home five miles north of this city following a lingering illness.
She was born June 17, 1858, five miles south of Bellville in Jefferson township where she resided until her marriage to William Shively, when she took up her residence near Butler.  Twenty years ago she moved north of this city.
Her maiden name was Garber and she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gladys Whitney, of this city, a sister Mrs. Jennie Crane, of Bucyrus, three brothers, E. L. Garber of Bellville and     Aaron and Levi Garber of Ashland. The body was removed to the Wappner mortuary for burial preparations where it will remain pending funeral arrangements.

William Jackson Shively, aged 67 years, 8 months and 15 days, died Sunday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock at his home, 814 North Diamond street, of apoplexy, after having been in poor health for a number of months.  He was born in this county and was a member of the Methodist church in Butler.  Funeral Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at the home, conducted by the Rev. S. L. Stewart. Burial in Jefferson cemetery. Mr. Shively is survived by three sons, Hammond, Andrew, and Melvin, and two daughters, Miss Gladys Shively and Mrs. Margaret Wowold.

William Shively and 1st wife, Artessima Jane Simmons were the parents of: daughter born 6-March-1868 in Worthington township, Richland Co., OH; daughter Margaret born May-1869, died 29-Jan-1936, married 1st Charles B Rowalt and married 2nd John H. Williams; son Hammon born 17-Aug-1870 died 6-Oct-1933, married Jesse Belle Powers Hollinshead;  son Alonzo born ca 1873; son Andrew born 31-May-1876 died 13-March-1928, married 1st Edith Smith, married 2nd Mrs. Addie E. Gale Whitney; daughter Nancy Jane born 28-Aug-1877 in Worthington township, Richland Co., OH;  Mary Ellen Shively born 25-Dec-1879 in Worthington township;  daughter born 8-July-1885 in Worthington township; and son James Melvin born 30-Aug-1881 died 21-Jun-1926 married Anna C. Sells.

William Shively and 2nd wife, Martha Elizabeth Garber were the parents of: daughter Katie born ca 1892; daughter Gladys Merline born 10-Jul-1895 married 1st Ralph Gale Whitney, married second William Franklin Mace; twin sons Lloyd born 18-Nov-1899 and Floyd born 18-Nov-1899.

John B. Shively, Son Of William Thomas Shively And Theresa Hayden

John B. Shively, son of William Thomas Shively and Theresa Hayden,  was born 1-May-1865 in Kentucky and died 2-February-1904 in Texas.  Finding genealogy information is difficult for John because he died at age 39.

Located in the Texas marriage records it is found that J. B. Shively married W. C. Fullington on 29-April-1896 in Grayson County, Texas.   Located in The Dallas Morning News, Saturday, May 2, 1896, Page 3, Column 4 is the following entry:
Shively-Fullington -- Denison, Tex., April 30--John B. Shively of Jonesboro, Ark., was married to Miss Clyde Fullington at 8:30 last night.

Additional information on John B. Shively is found in the biography of his father, William Shively, in The History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa From The Earliest Times To 1907, S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago, IL, 1907:
John B. Shively, born in Taylor county, Kentucky, May 1, 1865, acquired a public school education and married Clyde Fullington at Denison, Texas.  He died February 2, 1904, and his wife in 1905, leaving two children, Gladys and Brent.  John B. Shively in his active business career was a conductor and he belonged to the Ancient Order of United Workmen and Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, while his wife was connected with the auxiliary of the latter order.

A newspaper obituary was found for John B. Shively.  The article has the middle initial incorrect and this obituary lists him as John C Shively.  Located in The San Antonio Daily Express, Wednesday Morning, February 22, 1905, Page 5, Column 2 is:

John C Shively, aged 39 years, died Tuesday morning at his home, 101 Denver Boulevard, South Heights, of pulmonary trouble.  Deceased was a native of Kentucky and came here for his health six months ago from Waco.  He was a railroad brakeman by occupation and belonged to the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and the Ancient Order of United Workmen.  Surviving him are his wife, one son and one daughter, also his parents who reside in O'Neill, Neb., and five brothers and three sisters.  Two of his sisters are now here, Mrs. S. A. Anderson and Mrs. F. G. Loper,, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa.  The funeral will take place Tuesday morning from his late home under the auspices of the above orders, Rev. Mr. Killian officiating.

Gladys and Brent Shively are listed with their uncle and aunt, Frederick Loper and Bertha Shively Loper, on the 1910 Pottawattamie County, Iowa census.  Gladys and Brent are also found in the 1915 Pottawattamie County, Iowa state census records.
