Henry Ambrose Shively And Marjorie Mott Who Lived In Mahomet and Champaign, Champaign County, IL

The reason for this request is because he is a member of the Mahomet Masonic Lodge and Henry Ambrose Shively was the head of this lodge in 1898.  The lodge use to have pictures of all of the heads of the lodge, but about 10 years ago there was water damage to the wall where the pictures hung and some of the pictures were lost. Their lodge has had 98 leaders since 1856 and they have located all but about 15 missing pictures. Vance wanted to reach out to descendants of Henry Ambrose Shively or anyone who might have a picture of him that they could scan and e-mail to him to replace the empty spot for Mr. Shively's photo.

Henry Ambrose Shively was born on 21-Nov-1859 in Bowling Green, Wood County, OH. He died on 24-Sep-1938 in Champaign County, IL.  He was married on 26-Dec-1889 in Gibson City, Ford County, IL to Majorie Mott.  She was born on 3-May-1865 in Athens, Menard County, IL and died on 22-Apr-1951 in Mahomet, Champaign County, IL.  Marjorie was the daughter of James Wellington Mott (1833-1879) and Mary Ann England (1839-1872).  Henry Ambrose Shively was the son of Ambrose Shively and Margaret Jane Dubbs.  (For more information on this family see the Shively blog article written on Friday, January 30, 2015).

Henry Ambrose Shively and Majorie Mott had at least 5 children: Jerome Davidson Shively (1891-1955), Jean Mott Shively (1893-1983), Richard D. Shively (1895-1923), Henry Ambrose Shively, Jr. (1905-1946) and Damon Shively.  From the Gibson City Courier, Gibson City, Illinois, Friday, October 6, 1899, Page 5, Column 1:

Little Damon Shively, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Shively, died last night at the home in Mahomet. The funeral will be held this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Damon are both in Mahomet. Mrs. Shively was formerly Miss Margie Mott of this city.

Located on the 1900 Mahomet Township, Mahomet Village, Champaign County, Illinois census is the family of Henry A. Shively born Nov-1859 age 40, wife Marjoria M. born May-1866 age 34 married 10 years having 4 children of whom 3 are living, son Jerome D. born May-1891 age 9, daughter Jean born Jan-1893 age 7 and son Richard born Aug-1895 age 4. Listed on the 1910 Champaign Township, Champaign County, IL is the household of Henry A. Shively age 51, wife Marjorie age 45, son Jerome D. age 18, daughter Jean age 17, son Richard age 15, and son H. A. age 4. On the 1920 Champaign City, Champaign Township are Henry A. Shively age 60, wife Marjorie age 54 and son H. A. Jr age 14.

Henry A. Shively

Henry Ambrose Shively, 79, died at his home in Champaign at 9:00 p.m. Saturday, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Shively who will be remembered by early residents of this community had lived in Champaign for forty years.

He was born near Bowling Green Ohio, in 1859, and came to Illinois in 1864, living in Cerro Gordo and Ivsdale before settling in Mahomet in 1883.  After several years there the family moved to Champaign, where he had lived ever since.

He married Marjorie Mott of Gibson City, in 1899, who with three children survive. Surviving children are: Jerome D. Shively, Houston, Tex.; Miss Jean Shively, Cleveland, Ohio, and H. A. Shively, living home.  One son, Richard, died in 1923.

 

Charles Morrison Shively Who Lived In Wood County And Henry County, Ohio

Charles Morrison Shively was born 18-Aug-1848 in Wood County, OH and died 2-Oct-1935 in Henry County, OH.  He was the son of Henry Ambrose Shively (1802-1886) and Margaret McCartney (1804-1879). Charles was married first to Frances Holtz, daughter of James Holtz and Mary Ann Bretz. Frances Holtz Shively was born 2-Mar-1849 and died 28-Aug-1871 in Wood County, OH as a result of childbirth. Charles Shively married second on 4-Aug-1879 in Hancock County, OH to Francis "Fanny" Celeste Lewis. C. M. Shively Dies At Age 87

Rites of Ex-Holgate Livery Man To Be Sunday; Bury At Defiance

Holgate, Oct. 3 -- Funeral services for Charles M. Shively, 87, formerly the proprietor of a livery barn here, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Joseph Smith, one and a half miles northwest of Holgate, where he died Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Rev. S. K. Strauss, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church of Holgate, will conduct the rites and burial will be made in Riverside cemetery, Defiance.

Infirmities of age caused Mr. Shively's death. He passed away while sitting in a chair. He had been able to get about the house until a short time before.

He was born in 1848 in Bowling Green. Forty-five years ago he moved into a farm southwest of here and 30 years ago began operating a livery barn in Holgate.

Since his wife passed away eight years ago, he had made his home with the daughter in whose residence he died.

Surviving are two sons, Frank of Detroit, and John of Vickery, O.; two daughters, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. George Walton, Pembino, N.D.; 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A daughter and a son preceded the father in death.

Mrs. Shivley, Holgate Will Be Buried Here

The body of Mrs. C. M. Shivley, 68, who died Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at her home in Holgate will be taken to Riverside cemetery for burial, following funeral services Friday at 2 p.m. at her late home.

Mrs. Shivley is well known here, having visited a number of times at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. C. O. Haley, 721 Thurston street.

Mrs. Charles Galimore, who lives a mile from Defiance on the Fort Wayne road is a sister, and Mrs. George Cooper of Defiance is a neice. Mrs. Maude Clady and Ralph Shivley who preceded their mother in death are interred in Riverside cemetery.

Surviving are the husband, and four children: John H. Shivley, Fostoria; Frank L. Shivley, Detroit; Mrs. Joseph Smith, Holgate; and Mrs. George R. Waldron, Draton, N.D. The latter daughter cared for her mother during her illness.

Alfred Shively Who Lived In Wood County, Ohio And Died During The Civil War In Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia

Alfred Shively was born 9-Sep-1835 Bowling Green, Wood County, OH and died 20-Sep-1863 in Chickamauga, Walker County, GA.  He was the son of Henry Ambrose Shively (born 28-May-1802 in Union County, PA and died 5-Mar-1886 Wood County, OH) and Margaret McCartney (born 10-Mar-1804 and died 5-May-1879).  Alfred Shively entered service in Macon County, IL on 11-Aug-1862 and mustered in on 13-Sep-1862 at Camp Butler, IL. He was a Private in Company F, 115th Illinois Infantry. He was listed as being 5' 9", Light hair, Gray Eyes and Dark Complexion.

In Memoriam

(A few days ago since we received a letter postmarked "Vicksburg, Miss., Nov. 10," which contained the following obituary notice of Alfred Shively -- son of Henry Shively, Esg., of Bowling Green, this county --who was killed at the battle of Chicmauga. Except the postmark, there was nothing about the letter to show from whence it came. We do not know the author's name, but believing it to be the heartfelt tribute of a solider to one of Wood County's gallant sons who fell in the service of his country, we gladly publish it. --Eds-Journal.)

OBITUARY.  Alfred Shively, who fell at the battle of Chicamauga, in Northern Georgia, was well and favorably known to many in this community. He came among us a stranger, but his honest, manly face and frank, gentlemanly bearing, soon won for him good and true friends--such only as the good and true are capable of winning. No man ever distrusted him, or had cause of distrust. The golden rule was to him the law of life, and no one could know him without feeling that the world was the better for his living in it He left his plow, and the peaceful pursuits of the farmer, for the battlefield--not, as he said, from choice, but because his country had a right to claim his services, and they should not be withheld, whatever might be the sacrifice on his part. In his last letter, written the day before the battle, he says: "do not give yourselves any unnecessary trouble in regard to me. If it be my lot to fall in battle, rest assured that I shall fall at my post of duty. I shall never disgrace my friends nor the cause I am fighting for, but will do my duty as a true patriot and lover of my country, and the glorious old flag that is now unfurled to the breeze, and under whose shadow I now write". As to how well he kept his promise, let his brave companions in arms testify. His last words were, "Come on, boys, the day is ours; the enemy is retreating"!

Beneath the far-off battle field he rests quietly and well.  He leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss, which is deeply felt. His brother he often spoke of, and seemed to have a great anxiety for his welfare. He is highly spoken of by his officers, as a true patriot and a good soldier.

In Memoriam

Among the many who laid down their lives for their country, on the bloody field of Chicamauga, was Alfred Shively, son of Henry Shively, Esq., of this place. In his death, his parents and community have sustained a severe loss. No more worthy young man ever lived. He was one who made warm friends wherever he went. At the time of his enlistment he resided in Illinois, and his employers tried to persuade them not to leave. Said he: "When I see men with families turning out to defend my country, I cannot stay behind". His memory will every be fondly cherished by all who knew him. May He who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb, sustain and comfort his aged parents to this their hour of affliction. And in view of the new call for more men to crush this infernal rebellion, may our young men remember the example set them by young Shively, and "go and do likewise".          W. R. P.

Killed By Lightning

MAHOMET, Ill., July 28--During the storm this afternoon lightning struck and killed A. M. Shively, a prominent and highly esteemed farmer living two miles south of this place, while in the hay field, slightly shocking Oscar Wright and his hired hand, but these latter soon rallied.  Mr. Shively leaves an estimable wife and several grown up children.  He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and will be buried by the order.

From the Illinois Death Records it is known that Daniel Webster Shively was born 6-Jan-1858 in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio.  He died on 19-Dec-1927 in Champaign County, IL. He was married to Minerva Watts.  The following information was located in The Pantograph (Bloomington, IL), Thursday, December 22, 1927, Page 2, Column 4:

Daniel Webster Shively

URBANA, Dec. 22--Funeral services for Daniel Webster Shively were held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in charge of the Rev. B. M. Petty. The Masonic lodge had charge of the services at the grave in Riverside cemetery, where burial was made.

Mr. Shively died at 10 o'clock Monday night.  He was born Jan. 6, 1858, in Bowling Green, O., and came to Illinois with his parents in 1865, first locating at Ivesdale. He was married in 1884 to Miss Minerva Watts, of Ivesdale, and they came to Mahomet in 1898 to make their home.

Surviving Mr. Shively are his widow and three children, Frank R. and Mrs. Estella Know, Mahomet, and Mrs. C. J. Wegeng, 1105 West Washington street, Champaign.  H. A. Shively, 41 West White street, Champaign, is a brother.  A sister, Mattie Shively, died Fe. 22, 1919.  There are five surviving grandchildren.

Mr. Shively was a member of the Modern Woodmen and Masonic fraternities and of the Methodist Episcopal church.

From the Illinois Death Records it is known that Henry Ambrose Shively was born 21-Nov-1859 in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio.  He died on 26-Sep-1938 in Champaing County, IL.  He was married to Marjorie Mott.  Additional information on Henry A. Shively was located in the History Of the Board Of Trade Of The City Of Chicago, Edited by Charles H Taylor, In Three Volumes, Illustrated, Volume III, Chicago, Robert O. Law Company, 1917, pages 294-295:

HENRY A. SHIVELY - At this juncture is given merited recognition to one of the representative non-resident members of the Board of Trade, on the rolls of which his name has been recorded since 1908.  He is known as one of the large grain operators of central Illinois and maintains his residence and business headquarters in the city of Champaign, judicial center and metropolis of the county of the same name, where he is executive head of the extensive, well known and influential grain firm of H. A. Shively & Company, which not only controls a large grain business but also maintains a number of well equipped elevators in the central part of the state. Mr. Shively is a scion of one of the old and prominent families of the Buckeye state and was born in Wood county, Ohio, on the 21st of November, 1859, a son of Ambrose and Jane (Dudds) Shively.  The father was born in Ohio and became one of the substantial farmers and honored citizens of Wood county.  In 1865 he came to Champaign County, Illinois, residing there until his death in the year 1884, his widow surviving him by a number of years and their children having been three in number.  Henry A. Shively acquired his youthful education in the public schools of Illinois and as a young man he learned the trade of telegraphy.  As an expert operator he served as train dispatcher on various railroads, and he continued to be thus engaged until 1884.  His ambition led him into a broader and more independent field of endeavor and in 1887 he identified himself with the grain business, of which he has continued a resourceful and successful exponent during the long intervening period of thirty years,--a period marked by vigorous and resourceful application on his part and also by cumulative success.  As a liberal and progressive citizen Mr. Shively takes lively interest in community affairs in his home city and though he has never desired political preferment he gives staunch support to the Republican party.  He is affiliated with the Masonic fraternity and the Modern Woodmen of America, and both he and his wife are active members of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Champaign, in which city their attractive home is at 411 West White street.  In 1890 was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Shively to Miss Marjorie Mott, a daughter of Henry Mott, of Athens, Illinois, and the four children of this union are Jerome D., Jeane, Richard, and Henry A., Jr.
